Dear Friends,

Those of you who knew my late husband, Attorney General Beau Biden, know he spent his life working to protect children by strengthening laws around child protection, developing resources for children and families in need, and confronting those who prey on children. It is my honor, along with our children, to continue Beau’ s work of protecting children. The workshops developed by the Beau Biden Foundation and our Shield of Protection® program provide the community the best available child protection education and prevention skills, allowing children to grow, learn, and thrive.

Your generosity makes all of this possible. Your dedication to child protection is preventing child abuse, stopping predators, and helping families confront bullying and cyberbullying. Your support is rescuing children from traffickers. Your commitment is making child-serving organizations – schools, youth sports leagues, care providers, and more – safer for the children and families in their care. You are making a difference in the lives of thousands of children and families, as well as our communities.

The work that you make possible will be showcased on a national stage at the National Conference to Protect America’ s Children in June 2023. Dozens of leading child protection specialists from around the country will be facilitating discussions on child abuse prevention topics for hundreds of child-serving professionals, allowing thousands more children to grow up free from abuse.

Beaustronglybelievedthatcommunitycollaborationwouldsuccessfullyprotect childrenandfamilies,andleadtosafer,healthiercommunities.Helikenedthe communitytoawheelcomprisedofmanyspokes-families,adults,educators,youthservingorganizations,themedicalcommunity,lawenforcement,business,industry andgovernment-allworkingtogethertoprotectchildren.

Becauseofyou,2022sawtheFoundationcontinuetoworkBeau’splantoprotect childrenandconfrontabuse.Weenjoyedsomeamazingaccomplishments.Our programminggrew62%.TheFoundationreceivedtheMarvinS.GilmanSuperstarsin BusinessAwardofExcellenceintheNonprofitCategorybytheDelawareState ChamberofCommerce.Weworkedondraftinglegislationtoaggressivelyconfront groomingandholdthosewhoharmchildrenaccountable.

Somesoberingfactsmoveustotakeonemergingchallenges.Thenumberonekiller ofchildrenisnowgunviolence.Weconvenedameetingwithourpartnersinlaw enforcementandeducation,andareworkingtoaddressthisdeadlyissuein2023.

Beauwasentirelycorrect.Whenthecommunityiseducated,changehappens. Educationonmandatoryreportingseesreportsgoup,andmorechildrenandfamilies getthehelptheyneed.Whenyouthandtheircaregiversareeducatedonthedangers online,fewerwillbevictimized.Whenpredatorygroomingisexposed,children,their families,andyouth-servingorganizationsworktopreventandinterrupttheabuse.

Becauseofyou,theBeauBidenFoundationisexpandingourreachtohelpchildren, families,andorganizations.Butsomuchmoremustbedone.

One Person Can Make a Difference

When Kelly Brexler, a nurse at Doylestown Health, approached her employer about the critical need for child abuse prevention education, it wasn ’t just to help her community. It was personal.

Kelly’s son was a sophomore in high school when he disclosed to her that he had been the target of predation from a teacher. Kelly needed help. She needed resources for her son, her family, her community. She remembered the Beau Biden Foundation Stewards of Children® training she received at work several years ago and contacted the Beau Biden Foundation for help. Chief Executive Officer Patricia Dailey Lewis, Esq., and Program Director Claudine Wiant, JD, let her son tell his story. He was finally heard.

He was groomed. He wasn’t the first. Other students came forward. Other parents told Kelly that they knew her son would be this predator’s next victim. Other teachers suspected this teacher of predation but didn’t know they could report on a suspicion.

Her son was determined to be the last victim of this predator - of any predator. He insisted on speaking at school board meetings, to lawmakers, and anyone who needed to hear his story. Kelly’s son, like Kelly, is a fighter.

Knowing that other children and families needed help, and other predators were in her community, Kelly approached her employer to add child protection to their community education curriculum. Doylestown Health, a leader in community health, realized that preventing child abuse and neglect was a community issue requiring education and action. They contacted the Beau Biden Foundation and arranged for live and virtual child protection education sessions for their staff and the community.

What pleases Kelly the most is that other community organizations are getting involved. A school district, a community recreation center and even a local college are scheduling child protection training after attending one of the workshops at Doylestown Health.

Having the Beau Biden Foundation as an outlet to hear them and connect them to the resources to move forward was important. “Education is empowerment,” she said. Her other advice, “be prepared for a long recovery.” Predators tell their victims they’ll be blamed so they don’t tell anyone. “Keep the lines of communication open with your kids.”

"The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware’s partnership with the Beau Biden Foundation has expanded our vision on the ways we can protect children. The organizational assessment we submitted as part of the application process for the Shield of Protection designation allowed us to take a deep dive into our existing policies and procedures. We were able to identify ways we could close gaps and move from standard to best practice in several areas. As a result of the Beau Biden Foundation’s feedback and coaching, we now have a comprehensive child protection policy. The Beau Biden Foundation’s staff, especially Claudine, has continued to guide our work. She makes herself available by email, phone and in-person to answer questions and increase our understanding of the many ways our organization can continue to meet our goals to protect children. Each year, Claudine facilitates a training for our staff and volunteers on how to recognize and report child abuse and neglect. Although it is a difficult topic, everyone looks forward to seeing and learning from Claudine due to her obvious expertise and compassionate delivery. She has also trained us on ways to identify grooming behaviors in people attempting to connect with our organization. It is encouraging to have a partner that walks with us while gently prodding us to do more and to be better, that is what the Beau Biden Foundation has done for our House and we are eternally grateful."
