Quality architecture to me is when a building manages to move me. What on earth is it that moves me? How can I get it into my own work? (...) a building I just love looking at. How do people design things with such a beautiful, natural presence, things that move me every single time.1

FROM INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE TO CREATIVE NEIGHBOURHOOD Master Thesis Final Project Chelas Valley and Samaritana Factory, Lisboa 2018-2019

1 year

individual

Lisbon’s oriental area is characterized by a post-industrial landscape, stained by the deindustrialization and consequent neglect of the industrial buildings that here existed, leaving, until today, this fragment of the city of Lisbon, decharacterized and awaiting intervention, but with a great potential to become a new centrality of the city. From the analysis about the city of Lisbon and, mainly, of its riverfront, it was clear that the riverfront between Santa Apolónia and Parque das Nações constitutes an opportunity for an urban and architectonic intervention that enhances its use and better integration for the growth of the oriental area. In light of this opportunity the industrial core of Xabregas was chosen, where it is proposed an intervention that enhances the regeneration and new experience of this place, alongside with the rehabilitation of the industrial heritage of Fábrica da Samaritana. The creative complex that is proposed accomodates cultural, work and leisure areas distributed amongst the old factory building and the new construction which, together with the urban design, provide meeting areas for the residents, the visitors and the workers, keeping at the same time the industrial memory of this place. The aim is to recreate and build a new future for this place so strongly marked by its past. 7

Energy Conscious Urban Renewal in Budapest District 8, Budapest, Hungary 2016

half-semester

group (4)

Completed in half of a semester, the goal of this project was to design the concept for refurbishment of an old building block in a surrounding area of the centre of Budapest, followed by the designing of energetic efficient solutions for the environmental sustainability of the buildings. The building block was quite old and starting to get detiriorated, and located in a rahter social problematic area of the city of Budapest, where it is frequent to see gangs and very dirty areas. Following this, we decided to create openings on the ground floor, allowing for the free circulation between buildings, therefore giving more life to the area. On the gound floor level, a Civic Centre, Commercial Areas and a Coworking space are placed, in order to attract more movement to this area, and serve the population. On the upper levels, the use of Housing is maintained, as the population that currently lives there, will still need a place to live. Regarding the energy effiicient solutions, different ones were approached and implemented, such as, solar panels, double and triple glazing windows, green walls, rain water reuse, green roofs, reflective bricks. All the elements combined allow for an energy conscious use of the buildings. 17

The Spine of Sound Danube River, District 5, Budapest, Hungary 2017

half-semester

group (4)

The Spine of Sound is a floating promenade on the Danube river, in the centre of Budapest, with the goal of providing a new path for people to walk on the river “margin. The programme was one of using scaffolding or similar temporary structures to create architecture. The current margin of the river Danube, in Budapest, on the Pest side, is overtaken by cars, leaving almost no place for people. The chosen area, is where there is the largest sidewalk and stairs that lead to the river. The idea of this path is to have one level for people to enjoy the calmness of the river (the new floating level) and the upper noisier level for cars. The concept is then to have a flow of environments, changing along the path. The number 3 is the dominant here. There are 3 types of environments, 3 types of entrances, 3 levels of sound. The path goes from more individual and silence areas to smaller group areas to larger group areas and playgrounds. From the individual to the group spaces, the materials are also changing, from more vegetal to mineral ones.

Collective Housing Alcântara, Lisboa 2016

one semester

individual

The urban void that gives space to this building was part of an old river shore, and has a signifcant slope. From this slope originates a commercial street level on the lower side with parking on the “inside/underground. On top, there are 3 buildings, perpendicular to the street, which primary use is housing, starting on the first floor, allowing for a voided ground floor, with one commercial space and a water area. The main challenge here was to design and aggregate two different housing tipologies: one-bedroom apartment (small) and a three-bedroom apartment (large), where one of the rooms is accessible independtly from the rest of the house, and all the apartments should have cross-ventilation. In the designed solution, one large apartment equals two small apartments, when placed on top of each other. To guarantee cross-ventilation, there are voids created between apartments, which also allow for extra natural lighting, through frosted glass, that keeps the pivacy of both spaces.

Prototype + Agregation Alcântara, Lisboa 2015

one semester

individual

The foudation of this project is the conception of a minimum space, called module, that can be agregated in different ways. This space must guarantee the conditions for 5 people to cohabit, guaranteeing total privacy to one of them. This space had the limitation of 50m3. The location of the project was given after the development of the module, that will now be aggregated, and will also include other uses, commercial areas and a multiuse room. This location has several challenges, like the difference of heights between the confining streets and the irregular shape it has. These height difference was taken as an opportunity to create two different realities on the same building: facing the top street there are the modules, the residential units, with an open ground floor, that allows for a beautiful river view, and a staircase connecting to the lower level. On the lower level, given the nature of the street, there are mostly commercial and parking areas. Between both levels, that are connected by two staircases, there is a terrace, that has views to the river and has commercial areas and the multiuse room. The presentation had to be done with handmade drawings, of which the axonometry and module drawings present in this portfolio are scans of the original ones. 35

LIGHT SOUND ATMOSPHERE TRANSPARENCY

TRANSPARENCY in Architecture International Students’ Housing in Budapest Liszt Ferenc TÊr, District 6, Budapest, Hungary 2016

half-semester

group (4)

Completed in half of a semester, in a group of four (two portuguese, two spanish) this project had the main goal of applying the concept of TRANSPARENCY in Architecture, with the program to the choice of the students, but with the area if intervention already pre-defined (an existing block of buildings in the heart of Budapest). Surrounding this block, there is a music school, on one side and a church and a kindergarden/ elementary school on the other. Having these instructions clear, the decided program was one of a complex of housing for international students, which is something that is highly lacking in Budapest. The project is composed by 3 floors of dorm rooms and library on the top floor, 1 floor of common spaces, an open space ground floor, that can be crossed by everyone and an underground floor, with bars and nightlife spaces. The base concept for the project is the transparency of: vision, light, sound and atmosphere.

SOUND TRANSPARENCY The open ground floor allows for the sound from the music school to cross the block all the way to the other side. The hierarchy of spaces from the cave floor to the top, allows for the sound to flow and dissipate as we go up. On the caves there are bars, which are usually noisy, and on the top floor there are the dorm rooms and a library. In the middle, we can find the common spaces.

Thermal Bath Room Space, Light, Colour and Texture Studies Concept 2016

one semester

individual

The concept of a thermal bath room pasta model comes from a first draft project with the goal of studying space, light colour and textures. First, the space was created, and only after, the programme was defined, meaning that the programme was a result of the space. The idea for the function of the space generated from the city where it was being developed, Budapest, where Thermal Baths are a trademark and common thing. The end result is, then, a room with a tilted ceileing, with perfurations, that transmit the light, natural or artificial, and create an always changing space, and different environments throughout the day. This is to be the only source of lighting of this room.
