DIRECTOR’S

CORNER

Angie Bruna

Executive Director, Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce

¬¬After having it sit on my “to read” list for more months than I care to admit, I’ve recently embarked on reading the book Good to Great by Jim Collins. It’s been a great read thus far, and has sparked a fun conversation or two, beginning with the concept of the title alone. At my house one evening, I posed the question to my husband, and my ten and six-year-old boys, is there a difference between good and great, and is it a settlement to be good, not great? I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation that spurred from that question. Later, I started to think about connections on how this concept applies to our daily lives, in how we prepare for the day, in how we perform at our jobs, in all that we do. If we’re good, is that okay? Or is good a settlement for something that could be great? Another connection that struck me was a paragraph about people, and that “The old adage ‘People are your most important asset’ turns out to be wrong. People are not your most important asset. The right people are.” I found myself nodding in agreement. And I found myself smiling as I read this, as I couldn’t help but note the timeliness of reading this just days after Rick Haraldson, CEO of Beatrice Community Hospital & Health Center, and Jason Alexander, Superintendent of Beatrice Public Schools, had just shared their top ten reasons for choosing Beatrice with us at our Members Awards Luncheon. They went through a great list, and number one was… you guessed it… THE PEOPLE! The people in our community are hardworking, passionate, friendly, and dedicated to what they do – what we do. We have partnered together to accomplish many things in our businesses and organizations, including earning distinguished awards such as being named the 2018 Southeast Nebraska Community of the Year! What a prime example of stepping up to the challenge of not settling for good but striving to be great!

MESSAGE FROM THE HOMESTEAD Remembering Homestead National Monument of America Volunteer: Gerald C. “Jerry” Davison This month we remember Jerry Davison (1927-2016), an active community leader and a “Volunteer of the Year” award recipient at Homestead National Monument of America. Last month and this month (October 19 and 20), Homestead National Monument of America hosted free art classes for 5th to 12th grade students in honor of his work, which was made possible by the Jerry Davison Memorial Fund. Born in Crete, Nebraska, Jerry graduated Crete High School in 1945, and then served in the United States Coast Guard (1945-1946). Following service with the Coast Guard, Jerry attended Doane College and the University of Nebraska, and earned a degree from the University of Colorado School of Banking. Jerry married his wife, Joan, on November 23, 1952, and together they had two daughters, Annette and Diane. Jerry was an active community leader and worked in banking and architecture. In support of Homestead National Monument of America, he served on the board of the Friends of Homestead National Monument of America friends group, and as a very active volunteer. He began working closely with Homestead National Monument of America around the turn of the century, and he played a significant role in establishing the nationally-recognized volunteer program at the Monument. He personally recruited numerous volunteers for the park— many of whom still volunteer at the park today—and he acted as a volunteer group leader. Jerry was also a skilled photographer and artist in his own right, and his artwork was sold through the bookstores at Homestead National Monument of America. He credited part of his love for art, photography, and architecture to an art class he took as an elementary student himself. This is why he wanted his memorial fund to be used to host art workshops at the Monument. Jerry did a lot of outreach for Homestead National Monument of America—acting as a frequent advocate for the park wherever he went. He even helped to establish the Master Volunteer Ranger Group at Homestead National Monument of America, and joined the Homestead Volunteer Coordinator in San Francisco, California to present on this program at the Department of the Interior Partnership Conference. Jerry was recognized as Homestead National Monument of America’s “Volunteer of the Year” in 2002, becoming the park’s very first “Volunteer of the Year.” All told, he left an indelible mark on Homestead National Monument of America. His work not only helped the park immensely, he also greatly inspired the park’s rangers, staff, and volunteers. He remains fondly remembered and missed at the Monument. To learn more about Homestead National Monument of America, its mission, and upcoming programs, visit our website at www.nps.gov/home or give us a call at 402-223-3514.

Gage county

tourism update

Our next big tourism project is coming up! November 3rd is the Beatrice Nebraska Invitational Tournament. Gage County Tourism and Beatrice Hoops have teamed up to bring this season opening, one day basketball tournament to Beatrice and Gage County. Games will be played in Beatrice across various locations. We’re very excited to bring in out of town teams and their families and show them what we have to offer! We’re encouraging our local shops and restaurants to be ready for the influx of people out and about in the community in between games. We also like to make sure everyone knows, I have moved positions within the Chamber. I am now the Member Services and Marketing Cooridiator. The Tourism Coordinator position is currently open, so if you’re interested or know someone who might be, you can find that job information on the Beatrice Chamber web page under “Job Postings” which is located on the bottom of the page.
