Asteroids Provide Fun and Suspense Can you imagine what the surface of an asteroid located 2 billion miles away looks like?

With a apanese space probe’s help, you no longer ha e to imagine ast month, after a three-and-a-half year journey that took the probe 2 billion miles, a apanese space probe dropped a pair of ro ers on an asteroid known as Ryugu.

The ro ers are about the size of grapefruits and are hopping around the surface sending back images from the asteroid.

Ryugu isn’t the only asteroid to be making news lately, either. An asteroid that pre iously zipped by Earth on Halloween three years ago is headed our way again The asteroid was shaped like a skull and came within 00,000 miles of Earth when it isited us last time. n No . 11, it will be whizzing by again, but will be 25 million miles away this time. t’ll be too far away to tell if it still looks like a skull. lus, the asteroid’s shape may well ha e changed in the last three years. While it was pre iously estimated to be 2,000 feet in diameter,

El Día de los Muertos Music and wonderful smells fill the air, and skulls and skeletons are e erywhere some made of sugar, others made of paper-mache. And for some reason, the cemetery is aglow with families decorating with bright orange flowers and cleaning the gra esites of lo ed ones.

A strange looking CONTRAPTION was hauled out to sea last month, and its creators hope that it will help reduce the amount of plastics and other garbage oating in the ocean.

The Ocean Cleanup Project is a 2,000-foot long series of pipes that suspend garbage-collecting netting in the water. t left San Francisco on Sept. headed for the Great acific Garbage atch a giant growing glut of trash between California and awaii, the largest of fi e ocean garbage patches.

The project was thought up by 24-year-old Boyan Slat. The Dutch man was inspired by the plastic he saw in Greek waters where he went di ing as a teenager. Slat created the nonprofit cean Cleanup when he was 1 . The project recei ed millions in donations to become a reality. The project team is based in the Netherlands, but the prototype was made in San Francisco.

The connected pipes are not motorized, but once deployed will oat in a u-shape that is slowly pushed by wind and currents. The hope is that the netting that hangs about feet below the pipes will snag the oating garbage, but allow fish and other marine animals to swim below. A garbage ship will then collect the plastics for recycling.

NASA says the current known asteroid count is 1,6 2 Our home state has a connection to one of those distant worlds as well. ast month, the spacecraft known as S R SRE started its first scientific obser ations by searching for dust plumes around the near-Earth asteroid Bennu.

The spacecraft, which stands for rigins, Spectral nterpretation, Resource dentification, Security-Regolith E plorer, launched in 2016. S R S-RE will study Bennu for a while from orbit, tra el to the asteroid’s surface to collect a sample in 2020, and then return to Earth in 202 . Dante auretta, a professor of planetary science and cosmochemistry at the Uni ersity of Arizona s unar and lanetary aboratory, is the mission’s principal in estigator.

The cemetery celebrations can be spectacular. range marigolds called “CEMPAZUCHITL seem to be e erywhere candles and incense burn musicians play the deads’ fa orite songs, and a priest may walk the cemetery saying prayers for the departed. Family members bring the fa orite food of their departed lo ed ones and may e en stay the night Families also may elaborately decorate their homes. The marigolds are wo en into beautiful arches for the altar, where candles are lit to help guide the spirits back home.

Smells also help guide the spirits, so the departed’s fa orite foods are placed on the altar along with lit incense. ntricately cut, colorful paper called papel picado is hung.

Students Are Ready to Make a Difference!

by Reporters Marco Padilla & Amelia Varela Cottonwood Elementary Cottonwood Elementary School is having a Make a Difference workday and volunteer celebration on October 27th from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Make a Difference Day has been around for more than 10 years, which is longer than we have been alive!!

On Make a Difference Day, volunteers will put all the rocks that Cottonwood students have painted in Art in one place to complete our “Only One You” kindness project. Volunteers will also clean the chicken coop and Sassy, the tortoise’s house. They will also make our campus clean by picking up trash, washing down the walls, and painting.

At 11 a.m., the LDS church will be hosting a celebration at Cottonwood for all Days of Caring olunteers There will be jumping castles, a barbe ue, and face painting. They are e pecting o er 00 people to attend. f you are interested in attending Cottonwood’s Make a Difference Day on Oct. 27, the school is located at 9950 E. Rees Loop.

by Reporter Ava Chavez Maxwell K–8 Southern Arizona has a new football team. n Thursday, Sept. 20, went to hear the announcement of the new team’s name and logo. The e ent was held at Mercado San Agustin near downtown Tucson.

The area, known as the MSA Anne , was set up with a stage, tables, food booths and face painting. A DJ was playing music while performers walked around on stilts and twirled fire batons and were dressed up in costume with their faces painted with skulls. I introduced myself to the team from Tucson Federal Credit Union who were event sponsors and also one of the first official team sponsors.

by Reporter C.W. Morrison, Satori Charter School Camp Cruz is a u enile Arthritis camp sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation. This camp is a place where kids with juvenile arthritis or a childhood rheumatic disease can be themselves. Camp is a safe haven for these kids.

This camp’s main focus is to be a normal camp e perience where e erybody feels the same, where

counselors (most of the time) know what it feels like. ou don’t e er ha e to worry about being made fun of.

The camp sports traditional camp acti ities, including boating, archery, cooking and swimming. It also includes some fun twists like water games and a different theme every year. You know what they say, camp life is the best life!

Going to Canada!

by Reporter Molly Wheeler, Gale Elementary Have you ever wondered what it would be like to take a month long trip from Tucson, all the way up to Canada dri ing in a car t’s a long way, that’s for sure, but it is super cool.

There are e traordinary iews, great stops like osemite National Park, Mount St. Helens, and you get to see a lot of friends along the way. Whale watching in Canada was the best part of this trip. And I will never forget fishing and being the smallest person on the boat, yet catching the biggest fish.

The first stop was osemite. That’s the place with beautiful waterfalls, killer squirrels, and… a pay phone! After, it was off to Sebastopol, California. There, my mom’s friend Mark li es with his wife and two sons. It was super fun camping in the redwoods.

Ne t, we were off to Great-Aunt Suzie’s in regon. t was ery fun there. She had horses, and my sister and I got to ride them! n our way we went up to Astoria where The Goonies mo ie was made), we stopped at an air museum and saw the Spruce Goose, the largest wooden airplane e er built. n Astoria, the coast guard city, we walked to the Goonies’ house and saw river otters. The sun had set and the Tucson night sky was a great backdrop for the ideo that played the announcement and showed the new logo. The team name, the Tucson Sugar Skulls, was re ealed. The name was chosen through a contest that was open to the community. The

winner, eah Rhey, submitted the name and competed against 1,000 other entries. The sugar skull was chosen because of its connection to the Tucson culture. The sugar skull is a symbol used to celebrate the D a de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, where people celebrate the li es of their departed lo ed ones. t is iconic to Tucson and celebrates honor and festi ity, said the announcer. e in says, We fell in lo e with Tucson and the local community, we knew the time was right to bring the sport to the area and wanted a name that reflected what was important to the community. mmediately following the announcement, fliers with the stadium layout and ticket order forms were handed out along with stickers with the Sugar Skull logo. The season will begin in March 201 with games played at the Tucson Con ention

got to inter iew Nate E ans, author and illustrator of o er 0 children’s books, at the Worlds of Words Book Fiesta at the Uni ersity of Arizona. asked him about how he became an artist and illustrator and how he does his work.

E ans lo ed comics and books when he was a kid. e drew with his brother ince. When they grew up, ince became an artist for Mar el and E ans drew cards for allmark for 10 years.

Then he became an author. E ans uit his job and started writing books. e says, was so e cited to tell stories. wanted to tell about action and ad enture and tell jokes, and you can do all that in stories is first book was ow to Make your wn Monster, a sticker book.

When he co-authors a book, E ans sits down and brainstorms with a friend. e wrote Cookiesaurus Re with Amy Fellner Dominy. e wrote Bang Boom Roar A Busy Crew of Dinosaurs with Stephanie Gwyn Brown. e wrote onyella and the ellybeans books with aura Numeroff. e created the umpty Dumpty r. ardboiled Detecti e series with his brother. ne of his newest books is a graphic no el, titled Tyrannosaurus Ralph, which he also made with ince. E ans says, My brother really inspires me. is artwork is super great.

E ans li es in hoeni and teaches art for kindergarten and first grade in the morning. n the afternoon he creates his own books. E ans’ latest idea is about Mother Goose as a firefighter.

E ans creates stuff because he wants to. The publisher sometimes likes his story and sometimes he doesn’t. e usually gets one yes for e ery 10 no’s. When asked if he has any other ideas, E ans said, ha e so many ideas that do not know which ones to work on first. t was fun to inter iew a famous author. There’s nothing like e ploring nature from high in the sky. ew in a hot air balloon o er hoeni , Arizona. Balloon rides can last about 5- 0 minutes long, depending on the weather. ur ride with ot Air E peditions lasted 0 minutes and we climbed to o er 5,000 feet in the air. ur trip started at 5: 5 a.m., when the balloon ride shuttle picked me and the other passengers up at the Deer alley Airport parking area. During the se en mile dri e to the balloon launching area, the pilot talked about the safety rules and what we would do during the ight.

After a brief orientation, the balloon oated off the ground and into the air.

E erything started to look smaller as we ascended. During the ride, saw the Sonoran Desert, ake leasant and other hot air balloons. We also saw residential areas and a few small cities. was surprised that it didn’t feel ery windy in the balloon. The pilot e plained that it felt that way because we were oating along with the wind and therefore couldn’t feel it blowing against us. t felt e tra hot from where was standing near the burner. Before long, it was time to land. As we descended closer to the ground, we got into our safety positions and the balloon tilted sideways as we landed.

ed breakfast and we all made a toast.

While we were eating, the crew packed up the balloon and loaded it into the trailer of the an that came out to meet us. When we finished breakfast, we dro e back to Deer alley Airport.

Modern balloon ights are more fun and comfortable than what they used to be in the beginning. n ctober 15, 1 , ilatre de Rozier was the first man to y a hot air balloon. e stayed in the air for four and a half minutes with an altitude of feet. had a good time riding a balloon with ot Air E peditions. They ha e been in business for 2 years and their staff members care for the safety of tourists. ot Air E peditions is an e citing way to enjoy oating in the sky.

Getting Serious About Bullying Because Bullying Is a Big Deal…

W

e all know someone who has suffered bullying or who’s currently being bullied. With about one out of e ery four students in the United States saying that they’ e been bullied, the problem isn’t going away.

But the costs are high emotionally, educationally and e en monetarily.

These are some of the reasons why community leaders, including the Maricopa County Attorney, are stepping up to bullying, as should all of us

Saddening Numbers Why we care, why the Maricopa County Attorney’s ffice is in ol ed with bullying is because statistics show us that 1 million young people are being bullied each year nationally. ne in e ery four kids e periences bullying. E ery minutes a child is bullied e plains Martin Nowakowski, community affairs coordinator for the Maricopa County Attorney, Bill Montgomery.

Identifying Bullying While many of us ha e witnessed bullying or e perienced it, many don’t know e actly what it is. n fact, not all people being mean or lashing out at someone are bullying.

Nowakowski describes what bullying is and why it can be so hard to take. There’s rudeness. Being mean, when someone is intentionally hurtful. Bullying is when someone is being hurtful o er time, he says. t’s one of the hardest things for a student to ENDURE because it’s repeated

meanness. And it’s occurring from other kids, and the person being targeted feels powerless to stop it e points out that there are three key elements in ol ed ne: unwanted and aggressi e beha ior. Two: it’s repeated. Three: there’s an imbalance of power.

Kinds of Bullying Unfortunately, bullying has PERSISTED o er generations, but those trying to pre ent it in more recent times hope the numbers continue to drop.

Most bullying still happens at school or nearby. And state laws call for schools to ha e bullying policies and procedures in place including keeping reports of bullying on file. ften school bullying happens in the hallway or stairwell, in a classroom, the cafeteria, a bathroom or locker room, or out in the schoolyard or on the bus.

Bullying often in ol es put downs name-calling, making fun of or insulting a person or e en spreading rumors about them. Sometimes the bullying gets physical pushing and sho ing, tripping, spitting or hitting a person. ther times the bullying is indirect and in ol es e cluding someone from acti ities on purpose, like making them eat alone or pre enting them from ha ing fun with classmates on the playground.

That kind of bullying would usually end shortly after school lets out. But there is a less common, but growing means of bullying that ne er seems to stop.

Cyberbullying Smart phones, tablets and laptops are being misused by bullies to hurt, threaten or HARASS ictims. Maybe it’s on social media, through instant messaging, email or in a chat room. n the past, bullying stopped at school when the last bell rang in the day, points out Nowakowski.

Now a person can be by themsel es and when they hear the digital de ice ring, they can be bullied when they’re alone in their bedroom. Bullying is now 2 , he says.

More often than not, the person being cyberbullied doesn’t e en know who the bully is nline you can be anonymous it could be that the person being bullied during the day can be the cyberbully at night. t can be difficult to trace the source, and it the post can last fore er.

The Cost of Bullying t’s not uncommon for someone being bullied at school to start skipping class. Nowakowski says that 165,000 students each day in the United States miss school due to bullying. And while it’s a reality, he’s points out that getting a good education needs to come first don’t drop out of school Bullying can hurt your self-esteem, hurt your social in uence, he continues. t can lead to a person feeling isolated or rejected, depressed or an ious. Such feelings can e en lead to suicidal thoughts.

Costs are high for the bully as well. oung people who bully tend to get into serious trouble. n fact, most of them end up being con icted of a felony by age 24.

Some types of bullying and cyberbullying crosses the line into criminal acti ity, Nowakowski warns. For e ample, hitting someone can be an assault.

f somebody threatens to hurt you or threatens your life. r if the bully does something to hurt you because of your ethnicity, religious beliefs or sexual orientation that can be a hate crime Nowakowski and his Community Affairs team for the County Attorney Bill Montgomery do a lot of outreach on safety, including bullying. “Bullying is absolutely hurtful, he says, and we will ne er stop ad ocating to reduce the number of young people being hurt from bullying.

When Bullying Happens… f you’re being bullied, get away from the bullying situation walk away. ou can tell the bully to stop. f you see somebody being bullied, be a friend so they don’t feel alone. And the most important thing someone can do for someone being bullied is to get help from a trusted adult, Nowakowski says. Away from school, it could be a parent, an older sibling or an uncle. But at school, it could be a teacher, a school counselor or a coach.

When you need a special kind of help, your school counselor can be a good choice.

Buy only costumes, wigs and props labeled flameresistant or flame-retardant.

If you are making your own costume, choose material that won’t easily ignite if it comes in contact with heat or flame.

Provide children with a lightweight flashlight to carry for lighting or as part of their costume.

It is safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candle in jack-o-lanterns. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution.

Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.

Tell children to stay away from open flames. Be sure they know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire.

Tips for Parents with Kids with Special Needs Sammy Kunk has a dozen K–2 students in her self-contained class. But what makes it a cross-categorical class? “It means that I can have pretty much any eligibility for special ed,” she explains. “So I can have kids with autism, kids who have a developmental delay, an intellectual or an emotional disability—I can have them all (in this class).”

Covering three grades and having students with different eligibilities is challenging. Kunk has 12 students and two districtprovided aides in the classroom.

Her students have an even wider range of abilities and challenges than general education classrooms. “I get a huge range of students, and because I teach three grades, sometimes the difference between the

kindergartner and a second-grader can be vast,” she explains. And the best course for education varies for every one of her students. For example, “We may have other things (beside academics) that we need to work on more. I may ha e a student who’s nonerbal, so we’re going to be working on other social skills and other communications skills because (that person) is probably not ready to read yet, which is OK. I take each student individually, and I work with them on their needs, their abilities.”

To help evaluate your child before entering school, she suggests looking into Child Find, a free service for families. At least two summers before school starts, “they can take

their kid in and they’ll do an e aluation process, she explains. Child Find will check things like vision and hearing, and figure out where your child is academically and socially/emotionally. Through this, kids can get services before they start kindergarten!

Once at school, the teacher, family and service proiders like the child’s speech therapist, will come together to create an Individual Educational Plan, including all the services they get through special ed. The team also creates goals for the student!

Kunk encourages visiting a prospective school, meeting teachers and asking questions about teaching methods, communication with parents, reward and discipline systems, diversity, etc.

Then, up to Canada. We got to take a ferry to Victoria. The ride was much different than I had imagined. I thought we would have to stay in our car, but we parked the car on the boat and then got to walk around the deck. Once we got to Victoria, we stayed in a nice Air B&B right next to a wonderful park, which led to a beach.

My family and I went on a nice walk through Victoria. The buildings and atmosphere were so much different. mean, we’re talking stores made out of brick and horses happily carrying a carriage. While we were whale watching, we saw orcas and humpbacks. It was amazing. In Canada, we also got to visit a friend’s house. t was an actual mansion. After Canada, it was down to Bend, regon, where the ydro Flask water bottle was designed. My mom’s friend Beth li es in Bend. She’s a judge.

Our last stop was Truckee, California. My cousin, Blakely, lives there.

She’s really funny. We went to ake Tahoe, the second deepest lake in the United States. t was crazy fun And then, a NG trip back to Tucson, Arizona–home.

This Teacher Goes the Extra Mile for Students

K

athleen Bowman teaches fifth grade at Manzanita Elementary.

She teaches social studies and one of the math classes.

Student Sarah Rose nominated Bowman because she says her teacher “has ways that really help me and other kids” and “knows how to teach us in a way that we can really understand.”

Sarah Rose is a cancer survivor— she had a brain tumor at age 5. Her mom, Tanya, says that Sarah Rose has some physical and academic limitations resulting from the tumor which sometimes make school hard for her. Tanya praises all the Manzanita teachers.

“The teachers work really hard to be inclusive,” says Tanya, but notes that Bowman went out of her way to understand what her daughter needs.

“We thank her for going the extra mile,” they write.

Bowman is a native Tucsonan who originally thought she would become a pediatrician. But struggles with calculus and the realization that it would be more fun to be with kids when they’re healthy led her to switch her career plans. She is happy with the decision to go into teaching.

“I love teaching American history,” says Bowman.

She wants students to look at historical events from different perspectives and to become critical thinkers, she says. She adds, t’s really important to empower

them by teaching about regular people.” Bowman hopes this helps students realize that “they have an impact on the world, and it’s up to them to decide what kind of impact they want to make.”

When she is not in the classroom, Bowman likes to sew, read historical fiction and spend time with her four children. She also runs and has completed 15 half marathons and a handful of full marathons.

Bowman has a good time when she is at school, too! She notes that she has fun with her colleagues, and she loves her students. “Fifth-graders have great ideas and great insights, and I love learning from them, she says.

Fun Facts: A favorite author: Patricia Polacco, whose books Bowman likes to use in class “to teach about life skills.”

Black Belt: Bowman says her students might be surprised to learn that she has a black belt in tae kwon do.

Following in her footsteps: She is proud of all of her children, Bowman explains, but it is a special point of pride that two of the four are also teachers! “I think it’s pretty cool that they’re teachers, too,” she says.
