The very first step in the reporting process is coming up with a story idea one that interests other kids or one that they need to read. Oftentimes, coming up with a good idea for your news story is the toughest part of your job!

But have no fear there are tons of topics that will be great in Bear Essential News. Here are some helpful hints to get you off on the right foot.

Look Around You!

Your next story idea may be closer than you think. As a Young Reporter, you re actually the newspaper s eyes and ears in your classroom, at your school, on your sports team or in your after-school club.

Maybe your teacher ust won an award, or your school might be collecting donations for those in need. Perhaps there s a kid at your school who has done something great or has overcome a disability. id your team or your friends team ust make it into the district playoffs? Do you play some unusual sport or en oy an activity that you d like to share with our readers?

Maybe your class went on a fantastic field trip, or you or a friend just came back from some far out adventure or vacation.

News Sources A good reporter keeps up with his or her sources in order to get the scoop.

Find a few people at your school (like your teacher, principal, choir director or coach) who can tell you what s happening, and check with them every few weeks for news you can use. oung eporters also should keep up with current events. ead the newspaper, watch the news on T or listen to news radio. CHIANG RAI, Thailand—An incredible international rescue effort has paid off, freeing all 12 youths and the coach of the Wild Boar soccer team who were trapped in a ooded Thai cave for weeks!

“We are not sure if this is a miracle, a science, or what. All the 1 Wild Boars are now out of the cave,” the Thai Navy S ALs announced on their Facebook page Tuesday, July 10.

Back on une 2 , the team made the mistake of e ploring the sprawling Tham Luang cave network in Northern Thailand during the monsoon season. The tunnels extend into the mountain for miles, and the Wild Boars had made it halfway (2 ½ miles into the cave) when they became trapped on a muddy ledge. eavy rains completely lled cave tunnels.

On ay 10 of the team’s ordeal, a pair of British cave divers, two of the best in the world, located the stranded players, ranging in age from 11–16, and their 25-year-old coach.

Sadly, a retired Thai S AL who volunteered to help died after delivering air tanks for the team.

The team got to write and receive letters while they waited to get out. “Mom and dad, don’t worry about me. I am ne,” a player wrote.

The boys were understandably hungry. “We want to eat many foods and go straight home.” Another player asked his teacher to go easy on the homework.

The coach sent his letter of apology addressed to the players’ parents.

The resolution read: “ esolved, that the ag of the nited States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue eld, representing a new constellation.

While Congress passed the resolution in

1 , there was not a uniform version of the ag in those early years. Most ags were individually sewn and not mass produced, which led to an inconsistent appearance in ags.

Between 1777 and 1960 Congress passed several different ag acts. They changed the shape, design and arrangement of the ag. Stars and stripes were added to re ect new states being added to our country.

In 1 14, it was a large ag with 15 stars and 15 stripes ying over Fort Mc enry in Baltimore that inspired Francis Scott ey to pen a poem, now used as our national anthem. After seeing the ag ying over the fort after a particularly challenging battle, ey penned the “ efence of Fort M’ enry,” which later became known as “The Star Spangled Banner.”

In 1912, President William Howard Taft signed an e ecutive order that clari ed what the ag should look like. This was the rst time there was a consistent explanation of how the ag should appear.

The current version of the stars and stripes was adopted on July 4, 1960. It consists of 13 horizontal red and white stripes to represent the original 13 colonies. There are also 50 stars, which represent each of the states in the nited States.

Some kids are better at hiding their worries than others, but on the inside they are strug gling with worries of their own such as: hat if don’t like my classes or teachers hat if none of my friends are in my classes hat if don’t get along with my friends like did last year ’m starting a new school and don’t know anyone what if don’t fit in Studying is hard for me. It is perfectly normal to have an iety, and you will e perience some level of it throughout your life. The important thing is to develop skills that can help you cope with an iety so that it doesn’t prevent you from en oying your life.

The best thing you can do is talk to a par ent or trusted adult about your worries. They were kids once believe it or not!

Find the Key to Help Your Anxiety!

Start at any opening on the outside of the maze and figure out how to reach the key.

When you nd your an iety revving up, take a moment to step back from the fear, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that you have the strength to get through it. emember that everyone around you is struggling with their own an iety. Sometimes ust knowing we’re not alone helps give us strength.

Most importantly, try to keep a positive outlook. Try focus ing more on the things you are looking forward to rather than ating on what might go wrong.

One or more of these could be the key(s) in managing your back-to-school anxiety: • Talk to your parent or a trusted adult about your worries.

• If your anxiety starts kicking in, take a moment to step back and take a few deep breaths— you have the strength to get through it.

• Know that you’re not alone when it comes to becoming anxious.

• Exercise, meditate or pray.

• Stay positive—focus on the things you’re looking forward to!

As we begin the new school year, children once again e perience the opportunity to ad ust to signi cant changes in their environment, relationships and e pectations.

They may be at a new school or at their previous school in rooms full of students they don’t know. Their teacher is almost certainly different this year, and their friends may have grown and changed in the last few months. One of the few things that has not changed, however, is the mi ture of e citement, dread and anticipation of what is to come that greets them every August.

As parents, one of our best tools we can use to help our children out during this time is ourselves.

While school invoked an ieties assail our children, helping them to learn how to develop skills for larger, adult provoked an ieties of the future, we can take the time to listen to them.

We can ask uestions about their e periences and offer words of support so they know they have a safe place should chal lenges feel overwhelming in the moment. We can let them struggle and learn to become greater versions of themselves through their mastery of their an iety. We can pick them up should they fall, dust them off, and let them nd their way to wards becoming the wonderful, interdependent adults reach ing potential we never even knew they had. What a wonderful time of year!

D.C. Trip Makes Impression on Students

by Reporter Ethan Wacker, Tucson Country Day School On the last week of April (the 25th through the 29th), some seventh and eighth grade students from Tucson Country Day School (T S) went on an educational trip to Washington . . I was one of the eighth grade students who went, and our group was called Team D.C.!

When we landed in Washington, . ., we hit the ground running to visit the MLK, FDR, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials. That night when we finally made it to the hotel, I was exhausted.

From memorials to museums, we did it all…well most of it. In the amount of time that we had, there was no way we could fit everything in. Every day was jam packed so we tried not to be late to anything, even if that meant moving things around.

By the end of the trip, I wanted to sleep on the plane on the way home, but there was just one problem. One of the staff members who came on the trip had a history of pulling a prank on sleeping Team . . members by putting lipstick all over someone’s face if they fell asleep on the bus or plane. Two students and that same staff member did not fall asleep, and thankfully, one of those students was me.

Overall we had a great time visiting Washington, . ., even though by the end of the trip, we were tired. To me, this experience

London Bridge Now Resides in Arizona

by Reporter Hannah Watson, Old Vail Middle School Can you believe it took 33 years to build the London In Lake Havasu there is the original London Bridge.

London Bridge has one part where you can put a lock to Bridge? The bridge has lasted for almost 600 years! symbolize friendship.

This sight is an amazing thing to see during the Robert McCulloch, founder of Lake Havasu City, summer. My family and I even went in the lake and won the old bridge with a $2,460,000 bid at the City went on a playground in the water—it was amazing and of London’s auction in 196 . Mc ulloch then spent fun. The London Bridge is so fun and spectacular. Hope another $7 million to have it moved to the community. you will be able to see it one day!

I am a volunteer at the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation on Wednesdays. I started volunteering this summer and have enjoyed volunteering there everyday.

One thing you can do as a volunteer is make first aid kits. I would highly recommend volunteering there on Wednesdays since they play music and have snacks and beverages.

If you are not interested in volunteering, you can do the AI S Walk on Oct. 14. People all over the world do the AI S Walk.

Volunteering at the foundation has made a big impact on me now that I have something to do on Wednesdays, but I am also helping other people. Plus all the friendly people have changed me.

The Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation raises money to help find a cure for AIDS. AIDS is a deadly disease that the S.A.A.F. is trying to put a stop to.

Magician Carbonaro Performs Live

by Reporter Lizzy Barrett, Ocotillo Ridge Elementary Michael Carbonaro is a magician who is popular all over the world and who has his own T show, “The arbonaro ffect.” While on T , he performs magic tricks for unsuspecting people and catches their reactions on hidden cameras.

Carbonaro travels everywhere to perform his tricks. He is also a very funny person. The opening act featured arbonaro’s long time friend, uss Merlin. Merlin entertained the audience with a mixture of magic, comedy and audience participation stunts.

Carbonaro dazzled the audience with magic tricks, many of which required au dience participation. In one trick, he folded a 100 bill he got from someone in the audience and it turned into a 1 bill. In another trick, he put a colored uarter into an empty sh bowl and it turned into a sh bowl lled with many gold sh. In the ending act, he put shaving cream all over himself and mimed several different characters, something he claimed he did as a kid.

I went to his show held at the Desert Diamond Center. The show was packed.

Staff sold arbonaro merchandise to the guests. There was also a sh bowl where people could donate money to the “Hocus Focus Foundation,” a charity that Car bonaro supports. This foundation helps kids with learning differences by learning focus through using magic tricks. After the show, there was a meet and greet. I would recommend this show because it was both hilarious and family friendly.

Hoover Dam Is Spectacular

by Reporter Isabella Watson, Ocotillo Ridge Elementary The Hoover Dam was a spectacular place to visit. The Hoover Dam took a long time to build. It took a lot of people to build the dam, because it is so big.

The Hoover Dam was completed in 1935. I recently went there and listened to the tour guide. I learned a lot of interesting facts like how Herbert Hoover made jobs and helped people work on the dam during the depression.

I also had fun with the wind. I put my water bottle over the side and spilled the water. The water did not fall. The water would rise it is so cool. If you go to the Hoover Dam, make sure to bring water because it is hot there, but you can also try spilling the water by the wind.

Amazement at Peter Piper Pizza

by Reporter Mateo Barton, Tucson Country Day School Do you like pizza and games? If so, you should go to Peter Piper Pizza. I got to go on a private tour of the restaurant, and it was awesome!

I took a private tour at the Peter Piper Pizza on Broadway west of Wilmot (5925 E. Broadway). I got to go on a weekend morning before it opened to the public for the day.

At Peter Piper Pizza, I learned how to make a pizza. The dough is stored in the freezer—it gets taken out and put on the dough roller where it gets rolled out. The dough is taken to the bubble popper, a hand-held dough roller that has spikes on it to make dents so that bubbles do not form in the dough. Then, the sauce, cheese and toppings go on the pizza dough. Peter Piper Pizza has a lot of toppings! The pizza goes in the conveyor oven where it gets cooked.

Finally, it gets cut and is ready to be served.

I got to make my own personal pizza during my tour. It was delicious, and I put a lot of meat on it. Pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon and beef… the 5-Meat Supreme is my favorite pizza at Peter Piper Pizza.

Another part of my private tour is that I got to see the employees get the games ready to play. When I got there, the games were already turned on.

The Game Room Manager Matt Engle, went around and played every game to make sure they worked. If they didn’t work, ngle had to fi the games. Most of the time, if the games were not working, it was because the tickets were jammed, so he unjammed them. Then he checked the game again to make sure it was fi ed. If he won tickets while checking the games, ngle gave me the tickets. This process was spectacular!

Here are some bonuses I got from taking a private tour of Peter Piper Pizza: 20 free tokens, a free personal pizza that I made, and Peter Piper Pizza District Manager Richard Esham gave me a 4,000 ticket prize which was a red Diamondbacks baseball hat! I thought that was awesome!

Traveling Around the World in a Morning

by Reporter Ella Parsons, Homeschool During what celebration did people put poison in their food? On Chinese New Year! At the UofA there was a Worlds of Words program. There were many books on Chinese folktales and activities.

First they had a speech about Chinese New Year. This is how the story goes. A long time ago a monster came to eat people and their food and livestock at the end of each year. One year they poisoned their food and got out fireworks and drums so that he would be scared. Suddenly, there were loud booms and fire. The monster was confused by the bright light and noise so he went back to his

den. Later he came back and ate the food and a boy killed him. That was the end of the monster and that is why the Chinese celebrate the New Year with firecrackers and drums.

After the speech we got to make lanterns out of paper. To make it, you get a piece of construction paper and fold it in half, hot dog style and cut strips almost to the edge. Then you roll the paper and tape the edges together.

At the next table there were cards that told you what Chinese characters meant. You write them down on a special paper using a paintbrush dipped

At the food table there were Chinese foods.

Some of the candies were “White Rabbits” which look like a hard white Tootsie Rolls and haw flakes, which look like reddish-brown, round circles.

‘Big Nate Flips Out’ in Recent Comic Adventure

by Reporter Lizzy Barrett Ocotillo Ridge Elementary “Big Nate Flips Out,” written and illustrated by Lincoln Peirce, is a great book about Nate borrowing a camera.

The school owns the camera, but unfortunately, someone steals it. Nate borrows the camera. After he puts the camera away in his locker, he later finds out that it is nowhere to be found.

The book shows you how stealing is wrong.

This book is fiction, and there are many illustrations in this book as well.

The book is 216 pages long, and the font size is large so it’s not hard to read the book. This book is a comic strip style (graphic) novel book.

When I am reading this book, it feels like I am watching everything that has happened. The author makes me feel like I’m one of people in the story.

The only part I don’t like is when the camera gets stolen. The characters in this book are in middle school and they are in 6th grade. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fiction.

It’s summer! attlesnakes and other crawly creatures are out and about—look out for venomous animals. Be careful when walking outdoors both in the desert and in your own yard. Rattlesnake All species can deliver a dangerous bite. These snakes have a triangular head and a rattle on the tail, and are most active April through October.

Gila Monster The only venomous lizard in the U.S., it can deliver a serious bite. It’s skin has a black and coral pattern.

Scorpion The bark scorpion, just 1.5 inches long, has the most dangerous sting.

Stings can cause pain, numbness and tingling. Small children, if bitten, might have wild body and eye movements.

Black Widow Spider This spider has a round body with red or orange hourglass markings. Its bite feels like a pinprick and may cause pain and cramping in the upper body, nausea, vomiting and headaches.

‘Code 7’ Has Seven Cool Stories

by Reporter Lukas Nay, Collier Elementary “ ode : racking the ode for an pic Life” is a book by Bryan . ohn son. I really liked the book. It involves seven kids in seven different stories.

They are students at Flint ill lementary who are dealing with the mys teries of life some imaginary, some real and they call themselves ode .

My favorite story was the one where a kid named efferson is an artist, and he had to paint a mural. It turned out to be a great mural about all the teachers and workers at the school representing what they do.

Then there is this story about this kid, Talmage, who helped his father find the biggest fish he ever saw as a child. They did not catch the fish but were happy to have seen it. In another story there is a class that received eggs from their teacher. They needed to take care of the eggs and make sure that they would not crack. The kids all named their eggs.
