US Commences Its Vaccinations!

Last month, the Food and Drug Administration approved vaccines from two different companies for emergency use, giving our COVID-surging country a much-needed shot in the arm.

Both vaccines are being delivered and administered to people nationwide. The vaccinations require two doses, given three to four weeks apart. There are not enough doses of the vaccine for everyone yet, so the federal government created recommendations for prioritizing the distribution. Each state has its own process for deciding exactly how to PRIORITIZE who gets the shots.

In Arizona, the first phase of these priority groups included front-line healthcare providers, emergency medical service workers, and residents and staff of long-term care facilities. Dr. Cara Christ, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, said last month that vaccinations should be available to the general public by March or April.

In clinical tests, one vaccine showed 95 percent effectiveness in preventing COVID-19, while the other vaccine tested as 94 percent effective!

Like many other vaccines, there are possible SIDE EFFECTS that are normal signs of the human body building protection. The side effects should go away within a few days and may include pain and swelling in the arm where the shot is administered, fever, chills, tiredness, and a headache.

Neither of the vaccines are currently approved for anyone under the age of 16, but they are being tested in kids as young as 12 now. There is not an exact timeline on when vaccines will be available for kids, but there is hope that there will be a PEDIATRIC vaccine available by the end of 2021.

It may feel frustratingly slow, but the emergency use authorization for these two vaccines has happened quickly compared to other vaccine approvals. The fastest any vaccine had previously been developed, from start to finish, was for mumps in the 1960s and it took four years. Scientists have been working around the clock to get the COVID-19 vaccine approved this quickly, and some people think this will change the future of vaccine science.

AZ SciTech Festival Celebrates Its 10 th Year!

The pandemic lockdown might have made students rusty when it comes to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), but something big and bright is sure to spark your STEM interests—the 10th annual Arizona SciTech Festival and its pullout section in this edition of Bear Essential News!

The statewide festival goes virtual this year—it kicks off on Jan. 30 and runs through Feb. 28.

Arizonans of all ages can be INSPIRED by the fun and engaging events, experiments and other activities brought to you by the third largest science festival in the country!

This celebration of all things STEM in Arizona includes about 3,000 events in more than 80 cities, towns and communities. Some of the hottest AZ SciTech happenings will be this year’s Signature Virtual Events, including Bear’s annual Young Reporter Science Night, which will shine a spotlight on the amazing wildlife and ecosystems of our Sonoran Desert!

Saguaro National Park is one of the night’s partners.

STEM Careers for You! Twenty years ago, few people thought about being an INFLUENCER or considered a career in content creation. This begs the question of what jobs and careers will look like 20 years from now. Below are five jobs in STEM that you may not have ever thought about but are certainly worth considering.

Drone Technician: Some people think of drones as really cool toys, which they are, but drones are expected to be used for much more in the future—from delivering packages to tracking storms and completing building safety inspections. People will be needed to develop, update and maintain these drones.

Green Energy: As we work to rely less on fossil fuels, a finite resource, we are working to find sources of clean, renewable energy.

Electric and solar energy have come a long way, but there is still much more to explore Career Facts: · Median salary of web developer: $69,430 · Predicted world population in 2050: 9.7 billion people · One energy you’ve probably never thought of: algae biofuels

so scientists and engineers will be working on finding ways to harness these types of energy and make them widely available.

Web Development: Web developers create websites, from the code that runs the site to the graphics and special effects that make the site fun to look at. As more people use their cell phones to visit websites, web developers are responsible for making sure sites look good on phones as well as desktops.

Automated & Robot System Repair: We are all interacting more with automated systems, and this is only expected to increase in the future. Whether it’s ordering fast food or picking up a prescription, these systems will need to be created, maintained, and repaired by humans.

Food Production: Scientists are already working on modifying seeds to create seeds for farmers that are more resistant to disease and drought while improving the quality and yield of the crops. Vertical farming, which uses no soil and significantly less water, has gained popularity as well. As our global population increases and more people need to be fed using less resources, how we produce that food can certainly be aided by individuals working in STEM.

Crafting Fun with Pom Poms!

by Reporter Piper Perez Kiva Elementary The Paint by Pom Pom craft is so much fun.

Maybe you know about paint by number, and this is like that, only there’s no paint, there’s only little soft pom poms.

Actually, there are 800 soft pom poms made out of felt. They all are like stickers and have something sticky on the back that holds the pom poms on the board—you don’t need any glue!

The picture I created was a fun unicorn with happy eyes. The board shows you what color pom pom to use in each space.

When you’re done, and it takes awhile, you can put the picture in the frame that comes with the board and hang it in your room. This craft is created for kids ages 5 and up, and I recommend it— it’s lots of fun. You can learn more at PaintbyPomPom.com.

Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.

by Reporter Zoe Santos, Arizona Desert Elementary Have you ever had a dream? A dream so big that it may change lives for the better? A dream so big that it could change the world? A man named Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream just like that.

King was born on Jan. 15, 1929. Who knew that he would make a huge change in our world?

He is most famous for leading the Civil Rights Movement.

At the age of 14, King finished high school. King enrolled at Morehouse Community College at 15. By age 18, King became a minister at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL. Later in life, King married Coretta Scott King and they had four children.

King wanted things to be right for everyone.

Illustrator Inspires the Heart with Art What inspires your heart with art? Modern archeologists say that long ago people were painting in caves to communicate to others. The paintings are more than 30,000 years old.

Inspire Your Heart with Art Day is an annual celebration observed on Jan. 31.

Michael Hale, author and illustrator, has wanted to do art since he was 5 years old.

“I wanted to be a cartoonist when I was younger,” says Hale. “I learned a lot about art when I was in school. I eventually became the Creative Director at the Phoenix Zoo.” Hale designed the artwork for ZooLights and got to design and make Jengo the talking giraffe.

Then Hale decided to become an author and illustrator. The first book Hale illustrated was “Up, Up, Up” published in 2017 and written by Phoebe Fox. When doing illustrations, Hale makes a lot of extra drawings. “I draw over and over again.

Characters have to be just right.” It takes Hale six months or longer to illustrate a book.

Hale prefers color palettes that are muted. “I like the cooler ranges, blues and greens,” says Hale.

“I am working on one now with deserts, and I am using lots of browns.”

The speech and march gave King a great reputation both home and abroad. He was named, “Man of the Year” by Time Magazine and in 1964, King became the youngest person ever to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Girl Scouts Are Getting Ready for the Beloved Cookie Program Arizona Cactus-Pine Council girls are getting ready for the upcoming 2021 Girl Scout Cookie Program. The cookie program is the largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world! This year’s program starts Jan. 18 and runs through Feb. 28.

Girls can make significant gains through the cookie program—they gain entrepreneurial skills, earn badges, and learn life skills. They can also use proceeds to give back to the community. Proceeds stay local and troops get to decide how they want to use them. Many girls use their proceeds to pay for programs, summer camp, troop experiences, program supplies or troop travel. Other girls decide to fund their High Award experiences, making a sustainable impact in their communities. Still others fund their service projects, such as donating items to shelters, feeding the homeless, raising awareness about a topic they’re passionate about, or supporting local causes and organizations that help others.

Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls earn more than money—they gain hands-on experience, financial literacy and confidence. The program helps girls develop skills in five areas:

• Goal setting • Decision making • Money management • People skills • Business ethics

In 2021, Girl Scouts will add another skill to these five. The sixth skill girls are learning is managing uncertainty. Girls have been learning to adapt to changes and be flexible. It has also allowed a space for creativity. Girls are modifying their sales strategies in ways that work best for them and their goals, all while being safe.

To ensure Girl Scouts have a successful and safe experience in these unprecedented times, the local Girl Scout Council has come up with multiple ways girls can participate in the cookie program.

Girls can choose online only sales through Digital Cookie, in-person (providing contactless and social distance options) or hybrid.

Girls participate in the cookie program because it’s fun AND it teaches important life skills needed to become responsible and successful women—such as the 5 skills and how to give back to the community.

Teacher Has Deep Roots at Elementary

P

eggy Whiting has been teaching at Scott Libby Elementary for over 30 years. When she was young, Whiting says she knew she wanted to be a teacher and to have a big family. She found her career and also an extended family at Scott Libby.

Whiting has a large family outside of school—she and her husband have five children and 10 grandchildren. She also has developed deep family roots at her school. She references a note she received from one of her students.

“The student mentions that I was her dad’s teacher when he was in fourth grade,” reflects Whiting. “It makes her feel special that she has the same teacher that her dad had. There is usually at least one student every year in my class that is a sibling or a child of a student I have taught in previous years.”

Whiting appreciates seeing new siblings and even new generations of students each year. She says she almost feels an obligaton to keep teaching for kids who are looking forward to being in her classroom, and she feels honored by the trust families put in her to teach their kids.

Whiting says her job keeps her engaged because it changes each year—new students, new standards and new methods make every year feel new, she explains.

Whiting teaches a multi-age class with first-, second- and third-graders. She says that kids who might remain shy within a group of peers really come out of their shells in this format—by the time they reach third grade they are helpers and role models to younger students.

When she is not in class, Whiting enjoys reading, hiking and spending time with her husband and four dogs. Preparing for class and keeping students engaged during online lessons (sometimes puppets get in on the act!) keeps her plenty busy these days.

Whiting credits her father, a former elementary school and K–8 school principal, with supporting her thoughout her teaching career.

Her dad has always been a cheerleader for her, she says.

“I am passionate about teaching. I try to make learning as fun and concrete as possible, because I feel like kids learn better that way,” says Whiting.

“When they enjoy what they’re doing, and have an emotional connection to it, they remember.”

inally! 2021 is here! As the New Year begins, let’s all take three deep breaths and reset our minds and bodies for a fresh start. This is a great time to think about setting new SMART goals for 2021.

What does it mean to choose SMART goals?

SMART is an acronym that stands for: Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-Based.

Specific – It’s important to choose goals that are clear and simple.

For example, if you want to eat more vegetables, a specific goal could be, “I will try 3 new vegetables in the next 2 weeks.”

Happy & Healthy New Year!

Measureable – How will you know when you reach your goal? For example, if you want to be more active, your goal could be, “I will set a timer for 15 minutes each day and dance to my favorite songs.” You can also put a check mark on a calendar for each day you are active to track your progress.

Attainable – Choose a goal you know you can achieve. For example, it might be hard

to achieve a goal of exercising one hour every day if you have not been active recently. You will be more likely to reach your goal if you choose something more achievable like, “I will ride my bike for 20 minutes after school.”

Realistic – Choose a goal that is realistic for you to accomplish. “I will stop drinking soda,” may not be realistic if you are used to drinking three sodas daily. Instead, start with a smaller goal like, “I will only drink one soda per day in January.”

Time-based – When do you want to achieve your goal? Setting a deadline can be helpful so you can be proud of yourself when you achieve it. For example, if your goal is, “I will go to bed before 9 p.m. on school days for the next 3 weeks,” you can celebrate after the third week when you have completed your goal!

Here’s a couple of additional tips to remember when setting goals: Start with 3 small goals. Once you achieve your goals, you can choose new ones. It is also helpful to have a buddy. Together, you can help motivate each other to reach both of your goals.

Once you’ve set your SMART goals for 2021, you can start having fun reaching them! Good luck!

The Importance of

KINDERGARTEN! On your child’s pathway to the future and their scholastic journey, the first step is so important—that first step is kindergarten!

Kindergarten opens new doors and exciting opportunities for young children. It is the entry point into their elementary years—introducing them to new concepts and skills, bringing new friends into their lives, and giving kids the tools they need for their ongoing academic journey.

While kindergarten students in years past were busy learning colors and letter sounds, these days kindergartners are likely to be doing basic math and reading and writing as they progress through the school year. A 2016 research paper asked, “Is Kindergarten the New First Grade?”

and 2010, and teacher expectations were higher. In fact, the percentage of kindergarten teachers who agreed or strongly agreed that children should learn to read in kindergarten increased sharply from 31% to 80% during that time period.

In addition to attaining basic math and reading skills, kids in today’s kindergarten classes gain social-emotional skills and self-regulation, which are vital to their future academic success. Some studies have suggested that increased academic skills (especially in math) can correlate with better social-emotional skills.

In Arizona, children are not required to be in school until age 6, so kindergarten is not mandated. But building the foundations for successful readers is very important in our state. Arizona has a “Move On When Reading” policy and state laws require that third-graders demonstrate sufficient reading skills before they can be promoted to fourth grade. Third-graders who are not reading at grade level, with a few exceptions, are to be held back and given additional reading instruction. Assessments to identify students who may need reading interventions start as early as kindergarten. So kindergarten is an important step in making sure your child is on track to a successful school career.

Now is the time to contact schools to find out more about the kindergarten programs offered. Open enrollment and registration for the 2021-22 school year is underway at most schools. Schools may offer in-person or virtual tours or meetings with staff. Contact the schools you are interested in to find out more and make arrangements to have your questions answered.

Going on a STEM Adventure!

by Reporters Ellie & Madison Divijak Dove Mountain CSTEM K–8 In November, we participated in the Arizona STEM Adventure, which was planned by many local organizations.

The groups included: SARSEF, The STEMAZing Project, the University of Arizona Office of Societal Impacts, Raytheon, IBM and more.

We picked up supplies to complete activities each day along with videos that were posted online.

There were 1,633 students who picked up supplies and even more may have participated with their own supplies! There were 32 volunteers who worked for over 200 hours to put together the kits!

Some of the things we created included: elephant toothpaste, silly putty, screaming balloons, building your own aquifer and straw oboes. We watched videos showing us how to create the projects. For example, to create silly putty, we used a diluted glue sample, a bag with borax, a small container of water, a measuring spoon, a support cup and a plate. We had most of the supplies provided and were able to use a few others from home. Our two favorite activities were making silly putty and elephant toothpaste because they were so much fun.

Danniey Wrights, SARSEF Volunteer and Events Manager, says, “Because AZ STEM Adventure has always been about interaction and hands-on activities, the greatest challenge was re-envisioning the event to keep those important aspects while students and teachers participate remotely...some students will be inside a classroom, while some students will be at home. We worked hard to figure out what could work for everyone with so much changing every day!”

Wrights said her favorite part of the event this year was preparing for the live broadcast. “We have live tours prepared, scientists to interview, as well as engaging activities! Students are encouraged to ask questions and comment in the chat in real time,” says Wrights.

We attended the four hour YouTube live

broadcast hosted by Emily HalvorsonOtts, Dean of Science at Pima Community College NW, to conclude our week.

We were able to see many speakers as well as tours. Our favorite speakers were Calline Sanchez, Vice President of IBM, and Yvonne Mayfield, a NASA Ambassador.

We loved the tours of Pima Community College technology building and Biosphere 2.

To keep us involved, we voted during some interactive activities that students were watching live from home.

by Nava Nelson, Homeschool I saw the Christmas star on Dec. 21! Did you see it? Did you know what it was? Bear Essential gave Young Reporters the opportunity to interview Steve Kortenkamp, an astronomer at the University of Arizona.

He said that the conjunction happened because Saturn and Jupiter aligned by orbiting the sun and eventually lining up. The moon and the Earth do the same and that is called an eclipse. Some are solar eclipses while others are lunar eclipses. The next time that a nice solar eclipse will happen in Arizona will be in 2024.

Kortenkamp has been an astronomer for 25 years. He says that the experience that got him interested in astronomy was when he was young. His little brother had a telescope and he showed him Saturn.

Fun Fact: He says that Saturn is double times as far away from Earth as Jupiter is!

When asked what his favorite planet is, Kortenkamp didn’t hesitate to say that it used to be Pluto. But since that’s out the door now, he says that his new favorite is Venus.

Kortenkamp says that if you see the moon and say, “Hey, that’s a really big moon tonight,” you can stretch out you arm as far as it will go and put your pinky fingernail up to moon—it will look smaller!

His advice for those who want to improve in science is to find something that you really like—he latched onto astronomy when he was young, which really helped him.

If you missed this year’s event, the Great Conjunction will happen again in 2040, and Saturn and Jupiter will be even closer in 2080.
