A Voter’s Dilemma

I guess I had better start making a note About when and where and how to vote.

All of my life I’ve voted the GOP But the last few years it seems to me The republicans have somehow gone to pot, Their speeches are mostly just a lot of rot.

But I couldn’t vote for a democrat.

Oh no! I couldn’t think of doing that!

Their speeches all come thru loud and clear, If you have a radio or TV anywhere near.

“I will balance the budget, curb government spending.

No more foreign aid will we be lending.

I will get rid of the bureaucrats, slow down inflation.

Vote for John Doe, you can see I’m no imitation.”

Now I’ve heard that bunk for many long years.

Anymore it drives me wild, almost to tears.

Why doesn’t someone come along that can tell us the truth?

So that when I go in that voting booth I’ll vote for him, whether black, white, or green, Just so we can get something done on that government scene!

While this poem could have been written yesterday, it’s actually over 40 years old. Thank you, Sue Chapman, for submitting your father’s poem to us.

Grandma is one

Tough Mudder

So say the T-shirts of Laurie Galvan’s tiny grandsons.

Galvan completed her first grueling Tough Mudder event at age 49.

Last month she completed her sixth, at age 53. Her goal is to do at least 10—then who knows what challenge she’ll take on next.

Tough Mudder courses across the U.S., Europe and Asia involve tackling military-style obstacles throughout a 10- to 12-mile run. Galvan’s latest Tough Mudder included running up Snowmass Mountain, gaining 2,700 feet in elevation—an obstacle in itself.

“I’m not into competition to be the best or the fastest but if I were 30 years younger I’d be training for American Ninja Warrior,” Galvan said.

For Galvan, participating in Tough Mudders is a personal challenge and a fitness goal to work toward. She is also proud to compete in an event that supports wounded warriors.

At 22, Galvan became one of just 12 female Colorado State Troopers.

In 1993, she was hired by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department and is now a patrol lieutenant.

“It’s been the right path for me,” Galvan said. “This is where all the fun and excitement happens. You’re not just at a desk all day long.”

Promoting fitness “Back in my state patrol days you definitely had to do a lot of running and physical fitness,” she said. “It really became more of a focus when I started working at the sheriff’s office.”

She started weight lifting and getting back into shape after having her son.

“I got more interested in wanting to help out my fellow employees and promote health and fitness,” she said.

Galvan has certifications in fitness trainings and in sports nutrition.

When Colorado Mesa University started a police academy in 2006, she became a liaison and instructor. Since then, she has developed a boot camp program taking place during the first

six weeks at the academy.

“Working with the academy students really motivated me,” she said.

“I try to inspire them on both their personal and family levels. You can get by with being unfit in the field, but it can literally be the difference between life and death.”

The Tough Mudder challenge Galvan didn’t give any thought to advertisements about Tough Mudder competitions until a coworker asked if she was up to give it a try.

Because competitions are not timed and focus more on team camaraderie and personal goals, she signed up.

With participants averaging 30 years old, she was in a league of her own.

“Five of us went to Utah in 2012.

It was so cold and windy, we were just happy to survive the last two miles,” Galvan said. “The others said, ‘I’ll never do this again,’ but I was hooked! When you finish you are so exhausted. But when I look back I think that was quite a personal accomplishment—and really fun.”

Now her workouts were more purposeful because she was working toward a goal.

“The Tough Mudders gave me the extra spark to work on my endurance and upper body strength, and to push myself to get stronger and leaner for a purpose,” Galvan said.

“Working out energizes you. I don’t like running but now I’m running to survive.”

Tough Mudder competitions are not about the race—they’re about helping each other finish. Their motto is “No Mudder Left Behind.”

“All the obstacles are to challenge you, play upon your fears, and help you overcome those fears,” Galvan said. “There’s always water and mud, confined dark spaces, high obstacles, low crawls in mud under barbed wire, some have fire, and the very last obstacle is called electroshock therapy, which is a 30-yard field of dangling wires you run through which zap you with 10,000 volts of electricity.”

Galvan has run the Mudder in Utah, Las Vegas and Snowmass and has her sights on Lake Tahoe, Southern California and Mesa, Arizona.

“If they can do this, I have nothing to complain about,” Galvan said.

Can-do attitude

“I might want to try ‘The World’s Toughest Mudder’ some day,” Galvan said. “It’s a 5-mile course where you see how many times you can run it in 24 hours. For women, it’s usually 80-90 miles.”

She said there’s no room for whining when there are actual wounded warriors participating. Some are missing an arm or a leg, or are blind.

This past July 4, Galvan climbed to the top of Independence Monument with the local search and rescue team.

“This is something I never would have dreamed I could have done before doing the Tough Mudders,” she said. “I always want to be able to say, ‘I choose to do this because I physically can.’ When you get older, it’s not so much about the quantity of life because nothing guarantees you’re going to have a long life. It’s all

Runners will start in Grand Junction and wind up and over the Colorado National Monument and descend to the finish line at Circle Park in Fruita. The event will also feature a downhill half-marathon in the monument, a marathon relay, and the Fruita 0.038 Marathon, which is a one-mile run. Participants in the shorter races are invited to stay and cheer on the marathon winners as they cross the finish line and then enjoy live entertain-

Although Galvan said that things hurt more and are harder to do as one ages, there are two kinds of pain.

She said the pain of discipline is training yourself to continue to move and stay active, which actually makes things hurt less in the long run.

The pain of regret is giving up and becoming sedentary, which makes things hurt so much more.

“Doing anything is better than doing nothing at all,” she said. “Just move every single day.”

Sweet nostalgia:

Relive favorite memories with candy

M

eredith Miller has the sweetest job on the Western Slope. Some of her responsibilities at the Candy Time Shoppe in downtown Grand Junction include sampling the over 3,000 tantalizing products lining the shelves.

“My local candy store in the late 1950s was The Willow Fruit Stand at First and Orchard,” Miller, 63, said.

“It was in the middle of an orchard and we would walk there barefoot to get our favorite penny candy.”

Most of us can share her walk down memory lane. Our senses and emotions are intricately linked, so the scent and taste of our favorite candy can bring back special memories.

What was your favorite childhood candy or pop? Licorice, Cherry Mash, Tootsie Pops, cream sodas or root beer? When you indulge in them as an adult, do you reminisce?

Sharing candy stories Ben and Elise Hall call their Candy Time Shoppe, 500 Main St. in Grand Junction, a nostalgic candy store.

“Everyone has a candy story,” Elise said. “Some say there isn’t a lot you can do when you have grandparents and young children together, but here they can all find something.”

The Halls believe that candy connects families and generations together.

“Candy is kind of like music,” Ben said. “If you hear that Beatles song on the radio, it takes you back to when you first heard it. People come in all day and say, ‘I remember when I ate this as a kid,’ and name the store they got it at and what the packaging looked like. They also say, ‘It was bigger,’ and I remind them they were smaller.”

With backgrounds in the ski business and nursing, Ben, 60, and Elise, 55, never imagined owning a candy store until it was time to try something new.

Elise shared one story that will stick with her forever.

One day, a sad little girl came into the store with her mom. She was upset because her 88-year-old great-grandmother had lost her shortterm memory and didn’t remember her anymore. Together, they picked out candy that her “nana” would have had as a child. They came back to the store later that same day and the little girl was all smiles because the candy brought back happy memories for her great-grandmother.

“People come in frequently to get what they got as a kid,” Miller said. “They spend quite a bit of time here looking at everything, saying ‘I remember this’ or ‘I can’t believe you have this.’”

By Gayle Lagman-Creswick Dear Old Bag: I don’t know how I can help “Hurting Mom” at this point in her life. I wish I could. My life has been wonderful by having two loving and caring children. One thing I know for certain is that my wife and I really worked at being good parents while they were growing up, and as a result, they have both been loving, caring and helpful to us. (I am not criticizing “Hurting Mom.”) My wonderful wife passed away in 2015 after several years of illness. My daughter and son-in-law sold their beautiful home in California and moved to Colorado to be closer to us. They came to our house every week and stayed for three days to help me care for my wife. Our son in California visited us numerous times. In spite of his many obligations to his family and work, he helped me complete chores I had neglected during my caregiving years. I thank God for the blessings of having such a wonderful wife and children. Signed, RDG Dear RDG: Thank you for writing such a heartfelt letter. I do realize that some parents have neurotic or even psychotic problems, or health problems, which cause unpleasant behaviors toward their children. In marriages outside almost any faith, some families choose not to attend the ceremony. My stepson is gay. My husband and I strongly believe this goes against Biblical teaching and have told our son how we would handle his lifestyle. We have treated him as all our other children, but we recognize his partner as friend only. But we have hosted his male friends at restaurants, entertained them in our home, shared holiday gatherings, etc. We consider it unloving and against Christian teaching to be unkind toward these men, but we also don’t look at them as prospective family. Grandma needs to decide her faith, values and comfort level regarding the wedding. She should then express her feelings honestly to daughter and granddaughter. You’re never too old to run

R

andy Kirschbaum has accomplished many firsts later in life.

Aside from graduating from Colorado Mesa University at age 40, he participated in his first triathlon at age 49, and completed his first marathon at age 51. But his list of firsts doesn’t end there.

Kirschbaum raced motocross professionally from age 17 to 23, and began running to stay in shape.

“I’m 56,” he said. “That’s hard to say because I don’t feel that old. I feel that I’m in as good of shape as I was at 20.”

At age 50, he put his fitness level to the test and gave his fellow students at the police academy quite the demonstration.

“The very first day of the academy we did fitness testing and the other cadets, ages 20 to 25, said, ‘Okay, let’s see what you’ve got, Grandpa,’” he said. “I just smoked everybody, leav-

ing them speechless.”

Running a marathon (26.2 miles) was an item on Kirschbaum’s bucket list but he didn’t think he could run that far. That was until he competed in his first half-Ironman triathlon, consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bicycle ride and 13.1-mile run.

“I had never run that far in my life,” he said. “Not even in training.”

That’s when Kirschbaum decided he was done making excuses.

“I literally signed up a week before and did the Rim Rock Marathon over the Colorado National Monument, which is probably one of the toughest marathons in the U.S.,” he said. “I was ecstatic with my time of 4 hours 2 minutes.”

Kirschbaum was 51 when he completed the Rim Rock Marathon and he was on a roll, having just completed two other bucket list items that same month: skydiving and driving a real NASCAR vehicle.

“The marathon was off my bucket

list but doing another one was still in the back of my mind,” he said. “I plan on doing the Boston Marathon with 55,000 people in 2018.”

To prepare, he recently competed in the Mt. Sneffels Marathon between Ridgway and Ouray, and he plans to run the Las Vegas Marathon in November. To him, there’s no better way to work out than to run.

“In the least amount of time, you’re going to get the best workout,” he said. “My new thing is to always have a goal to work toward or I won’t train as hard.”

Kirschbaum is a testament that you’re never too old to push yourself to reach your goals and accomplish what you might have previously thought was impossible.

“You can do anything at any age if you work up to it and put your mind to it,” he said. “The key is to surround yourself with positive people who support you and say you can.” ■

Running the crap out of cancer

broke my record time while chasing the crap out of my life.

About a year and a half ago, I started running. I did this for two reasons: to help me keep off the 85 pounds I lost, and to run out every bit of bad energy in my life.

I started out slowly. I would run for one minute and then walk for 29.

Then I’d run for two minutes and walk for 28. After a few months of training, I could actually run a 5K. For the first time in my life, I ran the 5K in a race with my daughter.

It was a freezing cold day. But I must admit that the race was absolutely exhilarating. It gave me not only a real feeling of accomplishment, but I found out what a runner’s high really is.

A runner’s high is the emotion of overwhelming happiness and fulfillment you get when heart-pumping exercise causes the endorphins to light up in your body like a firecracker. We all have crap in our lives. Mine comes in the form of living with cancer for 20 years. When I run, it numbs the pain and makes the poop in my life go away, even if just for a little while.

I decided to challenge myself and train to run a 10K in the Big Apple.

My oncologist recently gave me the news that he wants me back in the operating room. Now I have more crap to deal with. I told the doc that the surgery would just have to be delayed. I’m running this 10K. It will chase away all the bad vibes cancer brings.

No, I’m not burying my head in the sand. I know I need to have yet another surgery. I’m just asking for a little reprieve. I want to be ready for another surgery. I want to be the happiest, healthiest sick person I know.

So I started to train and the other day, I broke my record. While training, I actually ran the whole 10K. I was laughing hysterically when I got

home. I was laughing because I hit my goal of running 10K one month before the actual race. I was laughing because my follow-up checkup showed the cancer had actually improved so my surgery could be delayed, and I was laughing for a totally embarrassing, totally ridiculous reason.

Here’s the whole embarrassing tale: I knew I was going to attempt the 10K. I slathered on plenty of sunscreen. I put Chapstick all over my lips. I put some tunes on my iPhone, and I folded up a little paper towel and tucked it underneath the back hooks of my sports bra so they wouldn’t rub and chafe my back while running.

Off I went.

About a mile into my run, it hit me.

It hits me frequently but usually it hits me towards the end of a run. But no, this time, it hit only a mile or so into my planned 10K run. What is it you ask?

I had to poop. I was too far into the run to go back home so I just continued on my way hoping my body would ease the urge and let me be.

I had no such luck. When my phone announced to me that I was halfway through the run, I just couldn’t take it anymore. I run on a canal surrounded by woods. There wasn’t a porta-potty to be found. I searched ahead of me to see no one coming. I looked behind me—no one coming. I paused my phone app, eased my way into the woods, and yes, I pooped right there—bare butt in the woods.

Relief came at once, but not a green leaf to be found. I slipped the paper towel out from under the back of my bra and used it as a handy wipe. Even more embarrassingly, I littered. Sorry folks, I just wasn’t carrying a poopy paper towel for five more kilometers. I happily ran the remaining 5K to complete my very first 10K. It just goes to show ya that running really does get all your crap out.

Anti-microbial soaps are not as safe as you think

W

ith the rise of hospital and health care-related infections there has been a needed push to improve the frequency and effectiveness of hand washing by health care workers. This has spilled over into the general consumer market with a plethora of anti-bacterial soaps and hand cleaners available. You might be surprised to learn that these anti-microbial soaps don’t actually work as well as you think and are linked to health risks, including cancer, developmental defects and hormone disruption.

List of ingredients Hand and skin disinfection products include soaps, gels and foams containing alcohol, triclosan, or other antiseptic ingredients like chlorhexidine, chloroxylenol (or PCMX), hexachlorophene, iodophor compounds and quaternary ammonium compounds such as benzalkonium chloride.

Most of these chemicals bioaccumulate, which means they slowly build up in the tissues of the body, especially fat cells, where they remain as a constant reservoir.

Of course, industry producers are quick to point out a few studies that suggest the chemicals are safe; however, multiple research trials are piling up which show the contrary. And that doesn’t usually take into account the effects of bioaccumulation or synergy with other harmful chemicals. Are these common chemicals dangerous?

Triclosan was developed as a surgical scrub for medical professionals and is also used in pesticides. It’s found in about 140 consumer products, including liquid soaps, hand sanitizers, dishwashing liquids, shaving gels and even socks, workout clothes, pillows and toys. In recent years, it has been added

to a host of products to kill bacteria and fungus and prevent odors. It can be found in everything from kitchen cutting boards to shoes, often packaged with labels that tout “antibacterial” properties.

Studies show that triclosan disrupts thyroid function and acts similar to the female estrogens and male androgens.

Animal studies confirm liver cancer as a risk and show it affects breast cancer cells. It has been found to disrupt early growth and development, making it frightening to consider that one study found triclosan in the breast milk of 98 percent of the American mothers tested. Bacterial resistance is another problem resulting from the overuse of triclosan.

The rest of the mentioned chemicals have similar safety issues. The alcohols are clearly the safest, especially since they evaporate from the skin quickly, but even they are absorbed and measurable in the bloodstream. Ethanol is the same type of alcohol found in familiar alcoholic beverages, while isopropanol is found in rubbing alcohol.

Our liver is well adapted to metabolize modest amounts of ethanol; thus, my research points to ethanol as the safest of the typical chemicals for use in hand cleansers.

What works to kill germs The best of the standard anti-microbial hand hygiene products contain alcohol, usually ethanol or isopropanol, with both broad spectrum and immediate effects.

Washing with plain soap is helpful at physically removing a large number of the bacteria and viruses from the skin and using anti-microbial soaps is slightly better. However, neither comes close to the effectiveness of alcohol-based hand rubs. ■

veryone is worried about heavy metals in their dental amalgams and vaccines. But what if I told you that you could be getting some in your morning bowl of cereal? It’s possible, according to Mike Adams, founder of the Forensic Food Lab. Some metals are simply not supposed to be in your body. The symptoms of acute poisoning require immediate medical attention, whereas chronic low-level exposure will cause symptoms that look like an autoimmune disorder, attention problems or neurological disease. Take a look at these startling symptoms of chronic metal exposure.

Lead - Fatigue, insomnia, trouble concentrating, irritability, headache, weight loss, stomach pains, low libido and high blood pressure. Without a doubt, there is always nervous system damage causing dozens of muscular and neurological problems. Disturbingly, lead contaminants have been isolated from a few baby foods and juices.

Arsenic - Darkening or discoloration of your skin, skin bumps (like corns or warts termed hyperkeratosis), white lines in the fingernails (termed Mees’ lines) and peripheral neuropathy. Local woman fights blindness, stays independent

icky Upson greets visitors to her office in the Grand View Apartments with a handshake and a smile.

As the service coordinator for the independent living facility, she writes grants, raises funds, and helps residents set up transportation, go shopping and generally tries to make their lives easier. She has even arranged for residents to get CCTVs that scan printed documents and enlarge them so that those with failing sight can read them.

Upson can really relate to that.

She’s visually impaired herself.

“I was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa when I was just 2,” she said.

“By the time I was in third grade, I was using Braille to read and write.”

One of her brothers was also blind, but “Our parents made us learn to be independent. We had to figure things out and were never given special privileges because of our handicap.”

Having her sight diminish didn’t stop her from completing her education in regular public schools or going on to college. She has always been gainfully employed, except when her children were small.

Even living on Glade Park doesn’t bother her.

“I carpool, or I can call my sister-inlaw who lives just a few miles down the road,” she said. “I always find a way to get to work.”

She married and raised two boys by herself after her husband left for “greener and younger pastures.”

She married again later in life and had some wonderful years before losing her second husband just last year. She also has a daughter, and the three kids have blessed her with 11 grandchildren.

White Cane Safety Day Upson recalled the event that influenced her to buy a white cane.

More than just a tool used by visually impaired people to detect obstacles, a white cane has become a symbol to alert sighted people to those who have lost their sight.

“I finally got a white cane the day I was carrying my infant son and crossing Orchard at 28 Road,” she said. “A car was coming but I thought I had plenty of time. I was wrong.”

She ended up diving for the ditch.

White Cane Safety Day, celebrated on October 15, commemorates the independence, achievements and positive contributions of vision-impaired and blind people. It’s meant to increase awareness of the white cane and what it signifies for individuals that use them.

Tools to help the visually impaired Technology has made a huge difference in how Upson communicates.

“I used the slate and stylus method for years to write and read,” she said.

Now her office desk holds modern gadgets that allow her to move quickly and easily through her work day. For instance, her computer reads her email to her and when she types, it reads what she writes.

Another great gizmo is Braille Sense, a small box about the size of a package of Oreos, which has a row of tiny metal pegs separated into groups. The pegs rise up as she runs her fingers over them to make Braille words.

“I use this to take notes for our business meetings,” she said.

Several wonderful organizations and resources have helped Upson continue to be independent, such as Volunteers of America and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation with the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

Upson also helps older folks who are losing their sight.

“It’s hard to come to terms with being blind. I hope I help some,” she said. However, she has no patience with those who use their visual issues as excuses.

“Some people get very angry over their disability and fall into victim mode,” she said. “My eyes are just a teeny part of my body. I never let it overwhelm me and I never had a chip on my shoulder.”

Obviously, her tactile sense is very important, as is evidenced by her fingers skimming over her desk to locate different things she needs.

When asked what the high points of her job are, she mentions one of many.

“I arranged for a CCTV for one resident. The day it was delivered, she came to me in tears because she could read her junk mail, and she hadn’t been able to do that for years,” she said.

Upson’s eyes misted a bit at this memory. Her biggest reward is watching people stay independent and have fun. Her biggest challenge?

“Finding resources. Fortunately Grand Junction has lots of resources for services and getting people connected,” she said. ■

Whooee! What a ride!

A

mong the many maladies that afflicted me as I became older was one they called peripheral neuropathy.

This was a malfunction of the nervous system of the outer extremities starting with a tingling of the feet and culminating with shooting pains in my hands and feet, and losing control of those areas.

The disease progressed through stages that left me dependent for locomotion, first, on a cane, then a walker, then a roller-fitted walker called a rollator. This condition was compounded by my atrial fibrillation, which led to a lack of stamina. The combination of these factors left me with slow and uncertain mobility when I wanted to get from one place to another.

Then, my much better half came up with the perfect solution: a mobility scooter.

This little vehicle was ideal for any gimp with the desire to get from one place to another with minimum effort. Smoothly, quietly, it glided from one room to another at my will. For portability, it quickly disassembled into three lightweight parts, which fit neatly into our minivan. For me it had but one drawback. It totally lacked any degree of excitement. It performed its function with efficiency, grace and dignity.

What a bore!

However, it had one thing that intrigued me to no end. In addition to the regular throttle, it had a speed dial with the image of a turtle at one end and a jackrabbit at the other.

I was forbidden to touch this dial while going into or operating inside a home or building.

Bummer!

To go to church, we parked in a handicap zone where my wife Judy

would quickly unpack and assemble my scooter. I would glide up the ramp provided and slip easily into the meeting room.

Then my good wife had a brainstorm. Our congregation counted within its membership several other handicapped people, many of whom found walking quite difficult.

“What if,” she inquired, “we parked at the far end of the lot, which would give me plenty of room to assemble your scooter and you ride it back to the ramp? We could save this space for someone who really needs it.”

With my mind fixed firmly on that little speed dial, I thought that was a splendid idea.

So now, each Sunday, we drive to the space at the far end of the parking lot as I envision that expanse of a half-block of unobstructed pavement as the newest version of the Texas Motor Speedway. I back out onto the roadway, twist the little dial up to full jackrabbit and hunker down. Eyes half closed against the wind, I rocket up the parking lot, pressed back in my seat, hair blowing, at a probable mind-twisting speed of 10 to 12 mph.

People gather at the front door to watch as I zip up the ramp and glide sedately into the meeting room where I unobtrusively slip the little speed dial back to turtle. I ease down the aisle to my spot next to Judy’s seat.

Probably none of the onlookers know what a refreshed spirit resides in that old body. It’s not just the speed with which I flew up the parking lot, but it was a ride that was totally under my control. No seat belts.

No air bags. No helmet. Just me, my scooter and the elements.

ew York City is always on the list as one of the most expensive cities in the world and thus one of the most costly places to visit. However, there are many free attractions for tourists.

1. Big Apple Greeters: Take a free tour with a greeter. Big Apple Greeter is a nonprofit organization that matches visitors with New Yorkers who want to share the city they call home. All greeters are volunteers— they are not paid professional tour guides, and tipping is not allowed. A typical tour is a walking tour of an area where the Greeter has expertise, and usually lasts two to four hours. Requests should be made three to four weeks ahead of time.

2. Central Park: Most parks are free but most parks are not like Central

Park. The Central Park Conservancy offers a variety of inexpensive tours but visitors are free to explore the park on their own. Free downloadable maps are available on the conservancy’s website or one can be picked up at one of their visitor’s centers. Places of special interest include Strawberry Fields with the “Imagine” mosaic and the statue of Balto, the sled dog who inspired the yearly Iditarod Race.

3. Staten Island Ferry: The Staten Island Ferry has been carrying passengers between Manhattan and Staten Island since 1905 and has been dubbed “One of the world’s greatest and smallest water voyages.” The ferry runs 24 hours a day year-round.

The 5-mile, 25-minute ride offers majestic views of the NYC skyline day and night. It’s necessary to get off and then reboard for the return trip. Avoid rush hour.

4. Downtown Connection: The bright red, handicap-accessible Downtown Connection bus is a free service that connects the South Street Seaport with the Battery and

City Hall Park, making 37 stops along the way. The stops are convenient to all of Lower Manhattan, subway lines and many attractions. Service is provided seven days a week from 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

5. 9/11 Memorial: The memorial honors the lives of those who were lost in the World Trade Center attack.

The names of every person who died in the attacks on both February 26, 1993, and September 11, 2001, are inscribed in bronze around the twin memorial pools. There are signboards, one telling about the “Survivor Tree” discovered at Ground Zero that was severely damaged but still survived. Though a visit to the memorial is free, the museum is not free.

6. High Line: The High Line is a 1.45-milelong New York City linear park built on an elevated section of a disused New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line. Knowledgeable docents offer walking tours twice a week, giving visitors an insider’s perspective on the park’s history. It’s accessed by elevator and stairs.

7. National Museum of the American Indian: The museum is part of the Smithsonian Institution and is dedicated to the life, languages, literature, history, arts and diversity of the Native Americans of the Western

Hemisphere. There are permanent displays highlighting the various Native American cultures along with changing exhibits and special presentations.

8. Art: The Chelsea area is home to many free art galleries. Most are between 20th to 29th streets between 10th and 11th avenues. There are several museums that are always free, such as the American Folk Art Museum, and some art museums like the Whitney Museum of American Art offer “Pay What You Wish” Friday evenings.

9. African American Burial Ground: One of NYC’s newest attractions is the open-air African American Burial Ground. A construction project in 1991 uncovered more than 400 caskets of slaves from an age when New York had more slaves than any American city outside Charleston, South Carolina. Free ranger-led tours are available but must be requested two weeks in advance.

10. More freebies: There is an event and/or parade nearly every weekend somewhere in the city. The Juilliard School of Music often has free performances. Many of the city’s buildings have amazing interiors and can be entered free of charge, including Grand Central Terminal, the Federal Reserve Bank, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Chrysler Building. ■

The Halloween walk home

T

he full moon was already high in the night sky as we exited the movie theater in the town square.

Many of the kids had rides waiting for them, but I did not. I had walked to the theater in the evening twilight and knew I would have to walk home alone.

The walk was fairly long—probably a dozen or more city blocks—and only a couple of those were in the downtown area where the streets were well lit. Once I crossed the main highway, there would only be a dim street light on each corner.

It was the late 1950s and folks in the small town of Sullivan, Illinois were not particularly concerned for their safety on the streets after dark.

Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been allowed to go to the late night show-

ing. We had no automobile, so it was walk or miss the fun.

As I started down the dark street with the lights of town behind me, I became more aware of the full moon and the poor visibility between streetlights. The moonlight was just bright enough to cast some eerie, deep shadows along the streets, making every tree and bush a formidable black form to approach.At that time it was not uncommon for dogs to roam the streets at night. I could hear their tags jingle in the darkness, but sometimes never seeing the dog— only hoping it was a dog and a friendly one. Sometimes they would run out of the shadows suddenly, causing me to freeze in my tracks until I was certain it was not a wolf.

Keep in mind where I had just come from. At 10 or 11 years of age, I

wasn’t afraid of anything except the dark, strange noises in the dark, shadows, black cats, and witches and werewolves following me in the dark. A dog howling in the next block just had to be a werewolf. Uncertain, I detoured over to the next street.

Still many blocks from home, I became uneasy about my situation.

It was decision time. Should I continue to walk, carefully checking my surroundings, or should I try running as fast as I could? Approaching another intersection and a welcome streetlight, I regained my composure.

Then, realizing that I had to keep going, the apprehension returned.

dle of the block when I heard a low growl in the darkness. Now, two seconds from hysteria and too terrified to run, I backed down the street and peered into the darkness. It had to be a werewolf, or maybe Dracula, or a zombie. I remained under the next streetlight until I was sure nothing was coming for me.

Just a few blocks from home, I decided it was time to make a break for it. I took a deep breath and charged out into the dark street. The sound of my feet pounding the street was all I could hear, but I knew something was coming for me.

Under the next light was a cat playing with something, and yes, I knew it was a black cat. I also knew the moonlight had just dimmed because the witch to whom the cat belonged had just ridden on her broom in front of it. Stopping under that light was out of the question! section before home. I thought I could make it.

I charged up the steps to the front porch, not noticing my granddad sitting in the swing until he spoke. “Are you in a hurry?” he asked.

“No” I answered, barely able to speak. “I made it.”

As he stood, I checked to be sure there was nothing behind me.

Once inside he wanted to know if I had some reason to doubt I would make it.

“The way you ran up the walk and steps, I thought something was after you,” he said.

I knew it was worse than that. I knew there were several somethings after me, but now safely inside, breathing still ragged, I said, “No, I just wanted to hurry home so you wouldn’t worry. Isn’t that why you were waiting for me on the porch?”

Yep, we had each other’s number. He figured I’d seen at least one ghost, and I knew he was concerned and waiting up to be sure I made it home safely. Neither of us was confessing. ■

Winefest gets better with age

olorado Mountain Winefest celebrated its 25th year last month and its second sold-out year in a row.

Locals mark their calendars for this four-day event celebrating Colorado wine and grape growers months in advance. Winefest also attracts crowds from the Front Range and areas outside of Colorado.

“Having lived in Colorado for over 15 years, it’s always been on our bucket list to see more of it,” Denny said, adding that it was the Modlins’ first time visiting Grand Junction.

The adult coloring craze has become an international phenomenon. Adults of all ages report that coloring conjures childhood memories; allows them to free their creativity; is therapeutic, relaxing and just plain fun.

The recognition for play as a basic need has spawned a number of products and services dedicated to providing just that. Coloring books, in addition to adult summer camps and laughter clubs, are just a few activities grownups are engaging in to retreat to their youth. Coloring books also fit in with the current trends of mindfulness and meditation to help deflate high levels of stress.

Rakiecki said that success is partly due to the opportunity participants have to socialize with people of different ages and backgrounds.

“We see entire families, mothers and daughters, grandparents with grandkids, young and old, men and women,” Rakiecki said. “What makes it special is everyone is so friendly, encouraging and inclusive. It’s a great way to relax and be creative. An hour will disappear just like that.”

The gatherings are informal. No registration is needed and you can come and go as you please. Coloring pages, pencils, markers and crayons are provided.

“I have done a variety of other art and photography,” he said. “Coloring keeps me focused. I like to look at the black and white picture, and imagine ahead of time what it will look like finished.”

Coloring can help you socialize.

Instead of grabbing a beer or dinner with friends, get together and color—it’s inexpensive and can help bring people together.

“We should have a coloring club instead of book club and drink wine,” coloring newbie Lynettee Randleman, 63, said.

“It’s fun to come and see the creativity of others,” Moore said.

Judy Dean, 80, has been coloring with her 26-year-old granddaughter for months, and has hung her favorites up in her living room.

“I’m not artistic but I can follow a pattern,” Dean said. “My granddaughter got me started. I got both of us the same book and it will be fun to see how they compare when we’re done.”

“One great thing about coloring is that it’s a great gift for anyone, especially that person who seems to have everything,” Shepherd said.

Sue Springer, 66, said she’s given coloring books to friends in the hospital because it requires little concentration.

The finished product is fulfilling.

There’s something satisfying about seeing your thought and effort create a tangible, artistic work—all which you did at a reasonable pace.

“It feels mindless but it gives you a sense of accomplishment,” Shari VanderVelde, 59, said.

Doodling is one way people organize their thoughts and focus. Coloring offers that relief and mindfulness without the paralysis that a blank page can cause. With coloring, you know what you’re working with. You just choose how to fill it in. There’s comfort in the patterns, concentration and repetition.

If simple opportunities for play escape you, give coloring a try. You’re likely to feel youthful, relaxed and creative, and you’ll get hooked on an activity other adults are raving about. ■

Grandparents play key role in spotting signs of child abuse

R

icky (name and some circumstances changed to protect the victims) moved from one friend’s or relative’s home to another with his great-aunt, who he called “Mom.” When the women went panhandling, 8-year-old Ricky was left in the care of the man who would sexually assault him. Despite being threatened with harm if he told, Ricky confided in a visiting grandfather after the man started molesting the girl who lived next door.

Child abuse, particularly sexual abuse, is an unpleasant topic at best. However, on the Western Slope, there is hope for the more than 300 children who are subjected to sexual or physical abuse each year. Fortunately, Ricky’s story ends on a brighter note.

Ricky was taken to the Western Slope Center for Children (WSCC).

Located at 259 Grand Ave. in Grand Junction, this child advocacy center is dedicated to reducing the trauma of abuse and neglect for children and their non-offending family members and caregivers.

Ricky described to the investigator the horrors of what happened to him and to the girl. The WSCC provided Ricky and his grandfather with therapeutic and supportive services that extended through a trial at which Ricky testified.

The offender received a 200-year prison sentence. Ricky survived and with continuing support will learn healthy coping skills and how to trust again.

But what if the grandfather had not been informed, caring and concerned?

Grandparents and other adults involved with youngsters on a regular basis can make a significant contribution in their lives, sometimes with words of encouragement or a

hug or by listening. At other times, their intervention can save a life.

Last year, the WSCC provided direct, supportive services to 283 girls and 141 boys and their non-offending family members. An additional 515 secondary victims were served. The WSCC coordinates with multiple agencies, such as the police, district attorney’s office and medical examiners, so children can tell what happened to them in a neutral, child-friendly facility.

What can grandparents and seniors involved with children do to help?

First, establish a positive, loving relationship with those children.

Be a good listener. If abuse should occur, the child you care about is more likely to confide in you.

In addition, learning the facts, minimizing opportunity, talking about abuse, recognizing the signs and reacting responsibly greatly reduce the potential for a child you care about to come to harm.

If you suspect abuse, or a child tells you about it, immediately call 242-1211. The calls are anonymous.

You cannot get into trouble for making a report that turns out to be unfounded, if you had good intentions.

To learn more about the signs of abuse, Jody Brandon with the WSCC suggests attending a free prevention training program called Stewards of Children. The next two are scheduled from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. October 4 and November 15.

WSCC recently experienced a $25,000 funding cut, and hopes that fundraisers like the interactive murder mystery dinner theater donated by Mesa Murder Mysteries on October 15 at the Courtyard Marriot will help bridge the gap.

ave you ever heard of Someday Isle? It actually exists. It is a resort on Coral Bay, St. John U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.

Conversely, you know it as a phrase in this form, “Someday I’ll…” The phrase has been finished in a million different ways depending on one’s future intentions, but for most it seems an elusive destination, or a fantasy about something they wish to do, someday.

One thing is certain. Someday Isle keeps hope alive for many, and hopes for the future makes life worth living. We all want to believe that at some point in the future, possibilities exist for the consummation of a dream or the accomplishment of a goal. Without hope, we perish.

For some of us, those goals or dreams are accomplished, but they are immediately supervened by loftier enticements. The soul’s search never terminates at Someday Isle but instead is unappeasable. It cries out, “There is still time to accomplish more. Here is another dream to pursue.” So we press on with renewed enthusiasm.

However, there is a contrasting point of view to consider. In that case, Someday Isle may be a place we never intend to go, but we think that saying we might go has the ring of good intentions. When used in retrospect, we may tell ourselves things like, “Someday I’ll redo something from the past that could have been done better.” Just thinking it may make us feel better even if it is impossible to accomplish. For those, it seems more a deception than a plan of action.

Personally I’ve accomplished many things, some in spite of myself, but I’ve also failed miserably at some things even when I thought I was giving the project my best shot.

Then I’ve insisted that someday I’ll

revisit this or that and do it right next time. When we think in that frame of mind, we are often merely expressing regret. We know all too well there is usually no redo, so we’re not going. We may like to think of going to Someday Isle with the best of intentions, but we also know the old saying about the road to hell being paved with good intentions.

With all of its forward-looking possibilities we’ve discussed, in some instances Someday Isle is not without serious hazards to be considered. I’ll discuss the one I believe to be the most serious of these pitfalls…procrastination. The phrase, “someday I’ll” smacks of procrastination; it always points to a future time. Many times, we have the means to deal with the task at hand or resolve the problem immediately, but we employ this phrase and kick the proverbial can down the road.

Then regret becomes a constant companion, and we find we must add other well-known phrases to this list, “I wish I had” and “I wish I had not…” I’ve heard it said by some that they would rather be sorry for something they’ve done rather than something they didn’t do. Still, procrastination and regret often go hand in hand.

This applies to our spiritual life with even greater significance because the consequence is more severe than anything we will experience in this life and it is eternal.

Dithering, or procrastinating, has been the topic of many revival sermons. Responding with “Someday I’ll come to Him when called by the Gospel of Christ” is always unwise.

Today is the day of salvation. We have no guarantee we will be here tomorrow. This would definitely not be the time for can kicking.

Regret will be the consequence, followed by the phrase “I wish I had…” ■

Should you sell short?

A

generation ago, folks our age would be moving from tennis and stocks to rocking chairs and bonds as time goes by. We’d be reducing our risk and stress level and sliding into a comfortable retirement. Nowadays, baby boomers are still playing sports and still in the stock market.

It’s not that we are not as risk averse as our elders. Rather, we think of ourselves as younger for our age than our parents. Consequently, we expect to live longer and need our money to last.

Investing these days is a quagmire. With the 10-year treasury rate below 3 percent, bonds cannot be expected to compensate for even low inflation. So most boomers are still in the market, trying to keep current with new and old strategies like ETFs, REITs, and short selling.

Short selling for seniors?

It used to be that the only people who were interested in talking about short selling were savvy investors. But recently short selling has moved into the limelight. Everyone has an opinion on this practice of borrowing a stock in order to sell it, in hopes of re-purchasing it when the price drops. For the market in general, the question arises whether short selling is a valuable way to keep stock prices accurate, or whether it is responsible for unfair maligning of companies.

Shorting is basically an indirect way of hedging a bet. Investopedia gives an example of an investor with a holding of large-cap technology stocks, who might short the Nasdaq-100 ETF to hedge his technology exposure. He would make a lot of money if the Nasdaq-100 crashed, but his downside risk is theoretically unlimited. No matter how high the price rises he has to purchase the ETF to repay his lenders.

The activist investor shorts a stock based on whistle-blower accusations. One incident in February 2015 was kicked off by an episode of “60 Minutes” about Lumber Liquidators. The show documented tests showing high formaldehyde levels in their laminates, which the company then lied about. The following day, the stock fell 25 percent. The company ran an emergency public relations campaign, but by April the stock was worth only half of its February value, and in May, with the stock worth one-third of its pre-“60 Minutes” value, the CEO quit.

Of course, a television show isn’t a court of law and activist shorts can unfairly drive down a stock price with false allegations. This is called “short and distort,” and is illegal. Nevertheless, The New Yorker’s James Surowiecki argued that activist shorts are good overall.

“All kinds of forces push stocks higher: investor overconfidence, corporate puffery, and Wall Street’s inherent bullish bias,” he wrote.

“Shorting helps counterbalance this, and it contributes to the diversity of opinion that healthy markets require.”

In the past decade, two studies of world markets found that markets where shorting was allowed were more efficient and their prices more accurate.

But is it for seniors?

In my nearly 40 years of investing and fewer years advising, I have never sold short. However, I’ve come to appreciate the benefits of short selling. My advice is to leave short selling to the folks working on their second billion, and cheer them on in their endeavor. The better the information they provide, the better their stocks holdings perform and the better the indexes do. The reduced stress of passive investing just might keep us on the tennis courts a little longer. ■

‘Tis the season for upgrading smartphones

pple released the iPhone 7 last month and the world is still buzzing about it. The previous month, Samsung released—and then recalled—its wonder phone, the Galaxy 7S. No matter what carrier you use for cellphone service, you are likely being bombarded, perhaps tempted, by offers to get a free or reduced upgrade.

Before you join the bandwagon of early adopters, you may want to ask yourself two questions: 1. Do I need a new phone?

2. Do I really get this new phone for free?

Every gadget company makes a big whoop-de-doo about their latest phone. It may have a 20 megapixel camera, a 4K screen, and the ability to resist bullets, but those features all have one thing in common: They will never be put to full use.

Even if you need a newer phone, you can probably get a much better deal on the previous generation. Before upgrading your perfectly good phone that you’re now used to, seriously evaluate how badly you need the new features of the latest phone. If you are just upgrading so that you can own the latest device, you could throw your contract agreement off for as much as two years.

Buying a new phone outside of contract typically costs between $500 and $1,200 depending on the phone. This is why cellphone companies increase the rates of their plans and add “nickel and dime” features to coincide with the releases of major phones.

Cell companies love to offer free phones, but almost all of these offers finance the phone over the long term.

Some plans roll the cost of the phone into a two-year contract; others schedule the financing of the phone over a schedule that leaves the phone paid off at exactly the same time that the next generation of phone will come out.

Before you go to your carrier and get the new phone and, most likely, a new contract, figure out exactly how much you are paying for your current service for what you get.

Look up your account online and see how much data each person in the family is using and how much the total contract costs on each bill. Sometimes you are paying a lot more than you know because of overages or extra features you don’t even use.

Some companies have a phone service rate that doesn’t include the data or the phone financing. These plans may claim that your bill is $40 per month, but then you must pay an additional $35 per month if you want more than 1GB of shared data. Then they add on the cost of financing the phone.

For an iPhone, this could be as high as $30 per month per phone.

Find out whether the phone is being subsidized (two-year contract must be complete before you can get another phone), financed (you can buy a new phone any time you want, but you may not own the phone until it’s paid off) or leased (you never actually own the phone, but you can trade in your perfect-condition phone once a year for an upgrade).

It’s always best to buy a new phone the way you would buy a new car.

Shop around, ask lots of questions, discuss it with your friends and family, and do the math before you buy. ■

Altrusa serves the community from the heart

he small town of Palisade is a warm community that includes the sweet nectar of its peaches, and people who just care about their neighbors. Part of the town’s goodness is the Altrusa International of Palisade, which serves the area’s youth and families.

This coming October 20 is a very special day for Altrusa International of Palisade because it marks the charter’s 20-year anniversary. Sharron Steele, Deb Osborne and Cheryl Borchardt formed the charter from the Grand Junction charter. While the Palisade group remains small, it fills a much needed niche.

The group will celebrate its anniversary with a banquet in January since now is a busy time for them as they prepare for holiday projects. Upcoming events include Make a Difference Day, which is a huge book giveaway on the fourth Saturday of October. The Palisade charter is also preparing for such charities as holiday food baskets and shopping for families in need.

The holiday charities are all made possible from community donations and the club’s partnership with the Salvation Army and Family Food Town’s donation of potatoes and

carrots. Students from the Palisade schools also pitch in. Secretary Darralee Coba especially enjoys helping the kids at Taylor Elementary sort through the food boxes collected by the schools.

“I am a big believer in the phrase ‘There but for the grace of God go I.’ You never know what life will bring and all the good we can do is what we were put here to do,” Coba said.

The club also participates in literacy-based projects that motivate children to be successful readers.

The club works year-round to get books into the community through the Little Free Library at the information kiosk in Independent Park.

One of Borchardt’s and Coba’s favorite programs is the “I Like Me” books, which are personalized books for kindergarteners.

“Literacy is really important to me, and to see how amazed those kindergartners were to get their own books with their names, the names of friends, school and teacher was really heartwarming,” Coba said.

Altrusa International of Palisade nominates students who excel academically for an award provided by the club.

Once a year, the Palisade charter partners with the Grand Junction charter to hold a juried art fair for middle and high school students at the Western Colorado Center for the Arts.

“They don’t remember the dayto-day things, but they remember the special recognition for their talents,” Borchardt said.

Steele said that one of her favorite Altrusa projects is the Mount Garfield Sport Scholarship, which sponsors sports necessities like shoes and insurance.

“We sponsored kids who couldn’t play a sport because they couldn’t afford it,” Steele said. She said that often Altrusa projects pull at the heartstrings, especially when she meets the family and children who are helped.

Anyone interested in joining Altrusa of Palisade is welcome to attend a meeting at 6 p.m. on the fourth Monday of every month.

“It’s a real opportunity for people to give back to community, and for people to develop leadership skills and give advice for projects,” Borchardt said.

Coba added, “It’s nice to be able to do some service to our community and to know what we do makes a difference in the lives of our neighbors. It’s good to know that the money we have raised actually goes to helping people and not for administrative stuff.”

Tiara Rado’s Pet Food Drive kicks off October 14 Pet food is one of the top requests at food banks in the Grand Junction area. Last year, Tiara Rado Animal Hospital’s annual Pet Food Drive provided enough food to Community Food Bank to feed pets for nearly the entire year. Tiara Rado Animal Hospital matched and doubled the food, raising the amount to 2,000 pounds of food and $1,000 given to the Community Food Bank in 2015.

n the olden days, the most common method of obtaining a daily horoscope was the newspaper.

Typically the advice was 20 to 30 words, harmless and most times, bland.

Today a star sign analysis is a far more in-depth beast and includes so much information that I’d need a couple hours and a stiff drink to wade through all the counsel on my future and what omen hangs over my birth sign.

I can now explore my love life, dating, tarot readings, the Chinese calendar, Mayan compatibility, career compatibility, name compatibility, numerology, astro profiles, dream tarot interpretations and psychic readings with nothing more than my birth date.

And don’t even get me started on the craze for all things zodiacal online. From presumptuous and unsolicited emails to daily pop-up enticements, I am promised that my fortune waits if only I’d call Tara, my personal astrologer. I’m given teasers as to just how lucky I could be, how wonderful life would be, and how delightful I should be. If only.

And I’d be tempted to call, too, if my all-knowing mystic hadn’t misspelled my name twice in one sentence.

Aside from the repetitive reminder that although I already have all the answers within me, I should still call Tara just to make sure, you can see that it really isn’t advice at all. It’s just a lot of words that culminate in a recommendation that

I pay attention to my inner voice.

Which isn’t just hilariously wrong, it’s also risky because Tara obviously doesn’t know as much about me as she claims. If she did, she’d know that my inner voice is mean and petty and swears worse than my outer voice and should never be given free reign.

There was an incident not long ago where I stood in a slow moving line waiting to pay for my purchases at a convenience store. Now, my outer voice expressed my frustration with a well-mannered inquiry about perhaps opening another register while my inner voice seethed with hostility at the dope that was working at a convenience store.

Anyway, I hadn’t realized that I had made my anxiety public until I saw the look of horror on the face of a woman in front of me. Evidentially, I had also given my inner voice air by asking if the dawdling employee was blindfolded…or something to that effect.

Similarly, despite the comprehensive study, even my character profiles are way off the mark when it comes to stargazing aficionados. I’m told that Virgos are keen outdoorsmen most at home in the company of animals and close to nature. Well, that would be true if it wasn’t for my utter abhorrence of all things alfresco, flora and fauna!

Perhaps if Tara had hovered over her crystal ball just a moment longer she’d know what anyone else who’s spent 10 minutes in my company knows—that no one in their right mind would suggest I go outdoors to be at one with nature.

There was a camping incident in my past that’s still legendary to this day. Suffice it to say, my inner voice was given free reign once more when I inadvertently referred to the crowd I was with as dirt lovers…or something to that effect.

No, if Tara knows me at all, her daily advice would be something closer to what my better half always advises: Just try not to be so you about... everything today. ■
