FINANCE

Interest Rates Still Rip-Roaring RONALD S. PHILLIPS Author of two books, teacher & trusted columnist

or one of the most boring financial topics around, interest rates are pretty exciting nowadays. Rates are up, slamming new homebuyers, car buyers, and others. High rates have stalled real estate pricing and dropped transactions by a third— huge impact! Savers can now get over 5% on cash using money market funds! You can also get around 5.5% on CDs, Treasury bills, and even over 6% on fixed annuities. Harsh wins and losses but still very interesting. Beyond the obvious cash opportunities, there are chances to make money in different areas of the stock market. What has gotten hammered and might provide buying opportunities? Simple: interest-rate sensitive sectors. Places like long-term bonds, mortgage companies, real estate operators, maybe utilities, and possibly financials. To name a few. THE BIG QUESTION: WHERE ARE RATES HEADED NEXT? CME Group (Nasdaq: CME, $212) takes its name from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which was founded in 1898. Today, it’s the third largest

derivatives exchange in the world. One thing that’s traded among their 23 million daily contracts is Fed Funds futures. From these many trades they figure out an “educated guess” of where Fed Funds may be headed. Of course, this is all speculation but gives us some clues to the future. Using this info, we can see that for December of 2023 there’s a zero chance of Fed rates going down. This starts changing in March of next year to about a 30% chance of dropping then goes all the way to over 9-in-10 odds for July 2024. Smart money is betting that interest rates will drop. Take a look at the graphic to see the futures expectations. CLIMBING THE LADDER As always, I want to give you some usable ideas. And also, as always, these are just ideas that could provide a good jumping-off point for your further research. One thing I’m highly recommending to clients and friends is to consider a bond ladder. A lot of you reading this may already know what that it. It’s a simple tool that can help lower the “maturity risk” you now face with deciding where interest rates are headed. To build a bond ladder, the maturity of the bonds you’re buying are key. A recent ladder a great client and I just build was simply using 1, 2, 3, and 4-year bonds. Although the rates were just a bit lower for the longer dates the yields were all over 5 percent per year. Only three things can happen. Rates can be higher, lower, or the same during that “laddering” time. If it’s lower or the same we win. If it’s higher we gave up some yield but are still making money. As with all investing, it’s part science and part art. We’re trying to predict with educated guesses. Nothing is certain. But, using the above CME source, it looks pretty good. Also, our national debt interest payments just hit $1 trillion dollars—per year! How long can we really keep interest rates high? Plus, what if there’s a

Beyond these basics think of this: If you could set the rate for your mortgage interest would you set it high or low? And if you set it high for some reason how long would you keep it high? Dumb questions but the federal government is in exactly that situation. They set the interest rate on their own Treasury debt. Sure, it may go through a few layers of institutions and bureaucracy but my bet is on self-interest. Cheers! This article is for illustrative purposes only. Ron is not

OBSERVATIONS FROM THE CAVE JAMES R. GRASSO Former Chief Cook & Bottle Washer

ooking back over the last almost 75 years I must say I'm very thankful for my specific life (but I'll bet it mirrors yours). Was there love? Oh yes! Has there been hatred? Yes. Has it been heartbreaking? Yes. Has it been fun? Oh yes. Have there been missteps? Yes. Plenty. Has there been sickness? Yes. Has there been anxiety/depression? Yes. Have there been births? Yes. Have there been deaths? Oh yes. Has there been joy and happiness? Yes. Has there been pain and sadness? Yes. Has it been lucky? Yes! Has it been unlucky? Yes. All in all, it's been a normal American life. My memoirs, if I chose to

NOV/DEC 2023 - Senior Beacon - Page 3

write them, I believe would be an interesting read. Life to me has been like walking in a mine field. I'm amazed I haven't been blown up because there were plenty of moments when I'd get tired of dodging the mines in the field. I just wanted to get to a place with no mines and I'd rush forward, with impatience in my hand and that impatience just formed a bigger mine field. For this whole journey there seems to have been a presence with me. I guess it was knowing good from evil and knowing I was given a choice to do one or the other. Guess it was a well-developed conscience. I regret the evil proclivities of my life and know I have to make them right however I can. I MUST atone for straying down the path of evil and right myself to get back on the track of goodness and fulfillment. I hope I'm not boring you to death but there is an ending to these forty years of columns. It is coming sooner or later. It reminds me of a postcard I received long ago (still have it by the way) it was a colorful drawing of two unclothed women who were passing by a man laying on a blanket on a sandy beach and he was looking up at these unclad females' backsides and the caption read, "The end is near!" Knowing the character that sent it made the joke make me laugh uproariously. He sent another with this glamourous lady brushing her hair with a small animal on her face. The caption read "She called it a beauty mark, everyone else called it a mole!" And finally, the last postcard he sent me was of a five-point buck driving a jeep with a tied-up dead man lying across the hood of the vehicle. Its caption read, "Welcome to Oneonta!" (Oneonta is a small wooded college town located in the southern tier of New York State, home to two colleges. One private, one not. I graduated from the one not - we had more fun. It was 7 to 1 girls to

guys, tee hee!). What have I learned? I've got much to work to do. The reason for these remembrances is, well, I'll let you draw your own conclusions about how they pertain to your life. Here are some quotes that should put a smile on your face. John Glenn (astronaut); "As I hurtled through space, one thought kept crossing my mind - every part of this rocket was supplied by the lowest bidder!" Howard Hughes - "I'm not a paranoid, deranged millionaire, I'm a billionaire!" Old Italian saying: "After the game is over, the king and the pawn go into the same box!" Zsa Zsa Gabor: "I've been married to a communist and I've been married to a fascist, and I couldn't get either of them to take out the garbage,." Jeff Foxworthy: "You know you're a redneck when your house has wheels and your car doesn't.: Prince Philip (now King): "When the man opens the car door for his wife, it's either a new car or a new wife." Emo Phillips: A computer once beat me at chess but was no match for me in kick-boxing." Harrison Ford: "Wood burns faster when you have to cut it and chop it." Robin Hill: "Lawyers believe a person is innocent until proven broke." Arnold Schwarzenegger: "Having more money doesn't make you happier. I have 50 million dollars. But I'm just as happy as I was when I had $48 million!" Spike Milligan: "The best cure for Sea Sickness, is to sit under a tree!" Johnny Carson: "If life was a friend, Elvis would still be alive and all the impersonators would be dead." Jimmy Durante: "Home cooking. Where many a man thinks his wife is."

Doug Hanwell: "America is so advanced that even their chairs are electric." George Roberts: "The first piece of luggage on the carousel never belongs to anybody." Jonathan Winters: "If God wanted us to fly he would have made it easier for us to get to the airport." Robert Benchley: "I have kleptomania, but when it gets bad, I take something for it." A "tip of the cap" to my old friend "Pierre" who sent me the above-mentioned quotes. He was a legend in Oneonta. Let's see. How to finish? I know, I know a way to heaven. It's guaranteed by Jesus Himself. It's in a pamphlet that I will to you for free. Don't believe me, think I'm addlepated? Read this, Our Lord said to St. Faustina at the onset of WWII: "Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you..... Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death..... When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior..... Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy.... Through the chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will. He said it. You read it. I have it. Just contact me at SRbeacon@gmail.com and leave me your name and I'll send you the pamphlet. That's it. No strings. No selling lists to strangers. Godspeed to you and yours!

A WALMART CLERK AND THE NEW SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE

W

e have been studying the Book of Daniel at our church and our Sunday School class has decided to use Alistair Begg’s book Brave by Faith as our text to study along with our weekly sermons. So, what does that have to do with a Walmart clerk and Speaker Mike Johnson? More than you can even imagine. Let me explain. A few days before Halloween I was at my local Walmart at the self-check registers when I heard a conversation between two clerks. “So, have you decided on your Halloween costume yet?” asks one clerk to the other. “No, I don’t celebrate Halloween,” replies the other. Astonished, clerk #1 asks, “You don’t, why not?” Clerk #2 asks quietly, “Do you really want to know?” “Yes, I do!” exclaims clerk#1. “Because it’s demonic.” she replies. “Oh, are you a Christian?” asks the first clerk. “Yes, I am.” she says. That was the end of the conversation

as the first clerk proceeded to busy herself with some other activity. On a personal note, I had the privilege of giving her the “thumbs up” as I finished my business. Now, what’s that all about? This young lady chose to stand up and be counted. She did what the Bible commands Christians to do. She stood for truth. She drew a line over which she would not cross. The celebration of a “holiday” that has its roots in pagan practices and that glorifies death, gore, and grotesque frightful images is definitely contrary to the beauty and holiness of God. So, this young lady stood up for something she believed in and will stand firm in that conviction. That’s what Daniel and the three boys did when they first refused to eat the king’s food. They drew the line. If you have never read the Book of Daniel, I would highly recommend it especially in our current cultural crises and in light of all the events that are rocking the world. I pray that young Christian lady will stand firm in even more difficult situations. It’s important to understand that Christianity is fast becoming a thorn in this world’s side. That is because we dare to speak God’s truth about so many issues that are literally tearing our world apart. We have become a fragile civilization because of the diverse ways in which we break God’s laws, laws that are meant to protect us. We read in Ecclesiastes 7:29, “Behold, I have found only this, that God made men upright, but they have sought out many devices.” Now, on to Speaker Mike Johnson. He was recently voted in as the new Speaker of the House, a very powerful and prominent position in the political world. First, I want to say that his appointment to this office seems miraculous. He is a devoted Evangelical conservative Christian who in his own words said, “If you want to know what my worldview is, pick up a Bible and read it. That’s my worldview.” (I heard this quote on Albert Mohler’s podcast The Briefing.). Speaker Johnson is not afraid of boldly standing for the Truth as it is clearly proclaimed in the Bible. I can only imagine the kind of treatment he will get from his colleagues who have already begun to sling mud at him, calling him a religious nut, an extremist, a man who holds radical views (those views which are clearly addressed, acknowledged, and commended in God’s Word.) The Walmart clerk and Speaker Johnson have drawn their lines. They have declared their convictions publicly. They have literally placed their lives under the care of our Lord who has promised us that He will never leave us nor forsake us. Each of us as Christians must resolve in our own hearts how far we are going to adhere to the destructive social norms that are assaulting us daily.

Moreover, we have a voice and deeds. Believe in Him and receive His a responsibility to declare the truth, Gift. God’s truth about abortion (it is not This is my last article in the Senior reproductive health, it is a human life Beacon. Jan will be back in the next isbeing destroyed), about God’s design sue. REELING

RUSSELL CROWE STARS AGAIN BETTY JO TUCKER Pueblo award winning film critic

N

ETFLIX HAS RELEASED THE POPE’S EXORCIST starring Russell Crowe as the title character, Father Gabriele Amorth. Although Crowe delivers an excellent portrayal in this exciting offering, it falls short of his Oscar-winning work in GLADIATOR, which bowled me over back in the 1980s. Plus, comparison to 1973’s THE EXORCIST with Linda Blair as the victim and Max von Sydow as the exorcist also surpassed this current movie. However, I found THE POPE’S EXORCIST entertaining and very scary. Cinematography, background music and special effects stand out in this latest motion picture about exorcism. And fortunately, Crowe’s supporting cast members give him great support, especially newcomer Peter DeSouza Feighoney as the victim youngster and Daniel Lovatto as the priest who helps with the exorcism. Franco Nero also earns mention for his brief but impressive appearances as the concerned Pope. In addition, Alex Essoe and Laurel Marsden as Peter’s mother and sister add just the right emotional performances. An exorcist draws demons out. That’s what this film is all about. A priest working for Pope you see tries hard to solve the mystery of why a demon is in Henry. a boy tortured without mercy. Russell Crowe plays the exorcist. Italian accent sometimes missed. But otherwise he’s on the ball challenging the demon and all. Special effects work wonders here

while scaring us into great fear. But that’s the fun of films like this. So fans you should not dare to miss.

I should mention that the plot of THE POPE’S EXORCIST is quite complicated. It covers more than one exorcism and includes strange things happening in an old rundown Spanish Abbey as well as actions that might cause the fall of the Vatican if Father Amorth doesn’t succeed with his important mission. The plot also sets up everything needed for a sequel. No wonder Crowe decided to come on board with this project based on the writings of Amorth, a real person. I ad-

mit not recognizing Crowe until the final scene. He is that good here. I especially enjoyed the way he convinces us that Amorth also has a sense of humor. “The devil doesn’t like jokes,” he explains. . If you enjoy exorcist movies, other films you might like include: THE EXORCIST, THE EXORCIST 2, THE EXORCIST 3, THE LAST EXORCISM, and THE CONJURING franchise. They all intrigue me even though I don’t believe in this frightening religious process. Possession and exorcism is something that’s in every religion and culture. It’s a real primal fear: Is the body a vessel for our spirits? – Eli Roth (Released by Nefflix and rated “R” by MPAA)

‘Tis the Season for Scams: 5 Ways to Protect You and Your Family (StatePoint)--In today’s hyper-connected digital universe, cyber criminals have more information than ever before, with the ability to reach you through unsecure public Wi-Fi, your email inbox, via text message, and more. According to a Scam and Robocall Report from T-Mobile, Americans lost an estimated $39.5 billion to phone scams in 2022. Lucky for you, there are several ways to protect and safeguard your personal information to help prevent scammers from scammin’ this holiday season. 1. Avoid Public USB Ports: Traveling by plane this holiday season? The FCC warns that cyber criminals can download malware to public USB charging ports to gain access to your information. Prevent this by using an AC power outlet instead.

2. Beware of Charity Scams: It’s the season of giving, but the FCC warns many cyber criminals take advantage by creating fake charities staged as real nonprofit organizations to gain access to your payment information. Woof. To prevent this, don’t click on suspicious email or text links and verify the organization is registered at the National Association of State Charity Officials or Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance before donating this holiday season. 3. Screen Your Calls: Scammers are continuously upping their game, with total robocall attempts up 75% from 2021 to 2022. Detecting whether an incoming call is a potential scam isn’t always easy, but T-Mobile’s Scam Shield app makes it simple. Free to all T-Mobile customers, Scam Shield enhances your scam-blocking protections so you can say goodbye to scam calls. In 2022 alone, Scam Shield identified or blocked 41.5 billion scam calls in the T-Mobile network. That’s a whopping 1,317 calls identified or blocked every second. With Scam

Shield, when the network detects a potential scam call, it is flagged and displayed as “Scam Likely” on your device. Customers who want even more protection can download the Scam Shield app or dial #662# from their T-Mobile smartphone to enable Scam Block, which automatically blocks any calls that match the database of scam calls. Take that, tricksters. To learn more, visit t-mobile. com/scamshield. 4. Shop Smarter Online: According to Statista, 57% of holiday shoppers plan to use their smartphone to make holiday purchases this year, and scammers are onto them, ramping up activity during the two weeks before Christmas. To minimize any cyber Grinches trying to steal your personal info, monitor your financial accounts regularly for suspicious charges and sign up for your bank or credit card company’s text or email notifications to stay on top of fraudulent activity. 5. Use Secure Tools: Safeguard your online accounts with Multi-Factor Authentication, which requires users to enter two different kinds of information to log in, like a password and one-time PIN code. It’s like having a digital bouncer to make sure only you get into your accounts. Another protection is a password manager, giving you the ability to securely store passwords across multiple platforms and websites. The tool also provides an autofill password function and a new password generator. To learn more about the industry’s top fraud trends and how to stay protected from scammers year-round, check out T-Mobile’s Scam Shield Report found at t-mobile.com/news. While cyber threats are on the rise, you can sleigh scams by staying vigilant and incorporating these best practices into your life this holiday season.

Ancient structures: Imagine. More than 130 British locations offer substantial proof of supernatural activities. Shires once again, predictably give us ‘food for thought.’ During the 17th., century the currently occupied ‘Goat Gap Inn’ tavern in Yorkshire remains a relentless aide-mémoire of a former primeval era. Over the years; though yielding to a crucial reconstruction, this tiny dilapidated white washed, stone farm house, its wooden beamed ceilings, and slight corridors still continue to defy present-day scientific/logical opinions. The shady foreboding sinister interior, reinforces evidence of unearthly activities. Trembling tourists, wit-

ness vague, yet luminous flashes of virtually obscured hands, struggling to turn on hot water faucets, while methodical nursery rhymes effectively resound through sturdy concrete walls and narrow hallways, as a chorus of ethereal children harmoniously serenade from upstairs. Meanwhile a prominent ghost (conceivably a previous landlord) is ‘George’ an early seventeenth century resident, who sits quietly, with an untouched golden ale. Staring ahead, he occupies a cherished bench in the downstairs bar: he bothers no one. Another ancient structure: built in 1236 is Cornwell’s Tintagel Castle which now remains a ragged vestige of pillars and stones, traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Britain’s king Arthur, son of Uther Pendragon. Pounded into gravel by the ocean beneath, each year portions of this rock face collapse under forceful raging waters, causing an inevitable disintegration of the original fortress, once revered, yet soon to be a distant memory. Many ghostly stories emerge from this site, specifically of Merlin’s specter which haunts the dark, damp cave

below which bears his name. Several minutes facing the dark rugged walls of the cave, prevent anyone to remain without

village on his powerful Brough Superior motorbike, Lawrence encountered mere vague shadows of two young lads, arm in arm, leisurely walking across the street. No time to think, so swerving being the only option, he fatally crashed, saving their lives, but losing his own. Lawrence revered fast bikes. Today many indisputable loud motor bike reverberations are heard, from the identical country lane. Locals worship his tiny abode, and appreciate that this short-lived little paradise, remembers him, as his identical image is often seen visiting, while dramatically swirling his torso wrapped in Arab garb as he reaches the door of his treasured home. bone chilling experiences: if they’re lucky enough to recite the tale. Born in Tremadog, Wales in 1888 D.E. Lawrence outclassed all his peers. An archeologist, intelligence officer, warrior, military strategist, philosopher and idealist, this extraordinary playwright loved fast motorbikes. Inventing genius guerilla warfare tactics against the Turks in W.W.1., he also contributed gold, guns and ground-breaking concepts. (Meanwhile, acquired in 1925 by Lawrence,) this tiny seemingly insignificant, brown slate-roofed lodge built in 1808 (currently owned today by the National Trust,) would be his self-proclaimed ‘bolt-hole’ a sanctuary paradise, enabling his creativity to soar. This unique forest laborer’s home was now christened ‘Cloud Hill,’ a small chalet encircled by colorful rhododendrons, endured a ten-year restoration by Lawrence; who relished entertaining his literary friends such as; Thomas Hardy, George Bernard Shaw and E.M. Forster who defined this ‘primitive little abode with log fire, and windy gramophone’ as teeming with ambience.’ Universally known for his ‘sobriquet’ “Lawrence of Arabia” his last sentiments to his friend Nancy Astor were recorded…” this is where I will stay.” Five days later he was dead. * Skilled Nursing * PT, OT & Speech Therapies * Respite Care Twilight country lamps * Hospice Care * Offering single occupancy rooms to all pay sources were seldom efficient in * No ancillary charges shadowy lanes. a night of terror for Dame Alice Lisle. Pacing around her tiny room, a veritable prison, she anticipated her morning execution. More so than usual, the hours prior to six am., slowed down, giving an extra edge to her notable apprehension. One of the most distinguished residents of this timber cavern was dressed in a drab gray woolen dress, vacating her overnight sanctuary from an upstairs window, she eventually arrived at the unavoidable scaffolds. She positioned her aged and weary neck upon the crude wooden block, and to the crowds delight she was bloodily beheaded, all due to her protection of a pair of rebels, which had initiated this ruthless execution…the bloody aftermath of Monmouth uprising. Sentence was passed by the ‘Hanging Judge’ and her lifeless body was drawn through the streets ahead of two hundred weeping mourners, all displaying disapproval of Alices’ untimely demise. Today, locals cannot dispute the many sightings of a grey clad spirit which sways among the cemetery tomb stones: a sad yet figure of freedom, albeit without her head…

HOUSE GREEN LIGHTS 11 OF CONGRESSWOMAN LAUREN BOEBERT'S BIPARTISAN AMENDMENTS ELEVEN OF Con-

gresswoman Lauren Boebert's bipartisan amendments to the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill passed the House. In addition, 14 of Congresswoman Boebert’s appropriations requests were included in the base bill. Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (CO-03) said, “Redirecting wasteful spending in the bill to important Third Congressional District priorities is just common sense. I’m thrilled my bipartisan colleagues in the House supported my efforts to prioritize more resources for rural hospitals, increase access to telehealth services for 2.8 million rural veterans, combat wasteful and fraudulent healthcare spending, strengthen charter schools, support physician workforce expansion in rural areas, and address the unique challenges of rural and Indian education.” Background: This week, the House debated H.R. 5894, the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2024. Included in the base bill were 14 of Congresswoman Boebert’s bipartisan legislative initiatives. The House also passed 11 of Congresswoman Boebert’s amendments to the bill. In the 118th Congress, Congresswoman Boebert has been an extremely effective legislator, focusing on the needs of Colorado’s Third Congressional District and delivering numerous

legislative victories. Specifically, five of the Congresswoman’s bills and 65 of her amendments have passed the House. She has also passed seven bills through the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Committee on Administration. Congresswoman Boebert has secured $19.7 million for 10 important water and infrastructure projects in the Third District through Community Project Funding requests that are included in House Appropriations bills as well as 42 other of the Congresswoman’s Appropriations requests are included in the base text of House Appropriations bills. Here are the 11 amendments of Congresswoman Boebert’s that passed the House: Boebert Amendment No. 8 – Transfers $2 million from Health and Human Services General Department Management to the Small Rural Hospital Improvement Grant Program. The closure of rural hospitals has become a growing problem, with over 138 hospitals shutting down since 2010 and 450 more at risk. This program supports rural hospitals in delivering quality and affordable healthcare by providing them with investments in technology and training. Despite limited spending on rural health programs, this amendment recognizes the vital role that rural hospitals play in providing healthcare to rural areas. It's a practical step to empower rural communities and cut through bureaucratic red tape. Amendment #8 passed by a voice vote with unanimous bipartisan consent. Boebert Amendment No. 9 – Transfers $2 million from Health and Human Services General Department Management for the purchase and implementation of telehealth services to improve health care coordination for rural veterans between rural providers and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Colorado's Third Congressional District is home to over 100,000 veterans. Telehealth, which utilizes technology for remote healthcare, is essential to address the challenges faced by the 2.8 million rural veterans in the VA health care system. These veterans often face obstacles such as provider shortages and limited facilities, which result in higher rates of chronic diseases and mental health issues. Congresswoman Boebert's amendment aims to ensure that these veterans receive the quality care they deserve by expanding telehealth services and fulfilling our commitment to their well-being. Amendment #9 passed by a voice vote with unanimous bipartisan consent. Boebert Amendment No. 10 – Transfer $2 million from Health and Human Services General Department Management to the Rural Emergency Hospital Technical Assistance Program. The initiative is crucial in ensuring rural communities access quality and affordable healthcare. The program supports hospitals and communities in making in-

Boebert Amendment No. 11 – Transfers $2 million from Health and Human Services General Department Management to the Rural Residency Planning and Development Program to support physician workforce expansion in rural areas. The shortage of healthcare professionals in rural communities is a significant issue, with over 75% of rural counties designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas. Rural residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, and psychiatry provide training to residents in rural settings to produce physicians committed to practicing in rural communities. The program not only addresses the shortage of healthcare professionals but also contributes to rural economies, enhances medical service access, and strengthens communities.
