Rosemead Officials Make Big Splash with New Water Park

BY RUTH LONGORIA KINGSLAND

City employee salaries and benefits took a hit Tuesday night as Duarte City Council approved city budget cuts presented by staff and approved by union negotiators. After hearing from some city staffers prior to a closed session with labor negotiators, the Council returned to its regular meeting and unanimously voted to make cuts affecting the city’s 43 management, professional and general employees. The cuts will save the city about $535,000 over the next two years, said Assistant City Manager Kristin Petersen. As approved, within the next two years, employees will lose two unpaid holidays and four furlough days and will be required to pay up to 6% of their salary into their own retirement plans. Previously, the city paid into those plans. After the vote, Councilwoman Margaret Finlay said she doesn’t believe any of the Council was “happy” with the outcome. “It was the best we could do in trying situations,” she said, adding she’s not in favor of layoffs or other measures that may be forthcoming if the economy continues its downward spiral. “Our employees are too good to have to say, ‘You can go.’ [The employees are] good people,” Finlay said. “I believe things will get better, but we don’t want to go ahead and spend money we don’t have.” Mayor Tzeitel ParasCaracci also expressed her concerns and hope for the future. “The responsibility of this council is to be able to serve our residents the best that we can. We have to move forward and hope for brighter days,” she said. In other business, the

Robbers climbed through the roof, and at least $1 Million destined for southland ATM’s was stolen in El Monte last week. The armored security company was hit July 7 at about 8:30pm PT. The address of the robbery was 12300 Barrington Street in the El Monte. The area is popular for light industrial type businesses, which rely on easy access and warehouse space. It is located near main arteries as well as freeways. Robbers were able to gain entry from the roof top. Once inside they tied up the surprised employees. According to the Los Angeles Times, there were no injuries. What is known is at least $1 Million is missing. Authorities are scrambling to find the missing money. Major crimes detectives with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and forensic experts said while details are very sketchy, a review of the site identifies the company as Commonwealth International. They specialize in security and armored transportation needs for businesses which rely on having their ATM’s properly stocked with cash.
