State Redevelopment Laws a Concern for El Monte BY NURIA MATHOG Two bills signed into law last week by Governor Brown could hinder economic recovery for El Monte, a city hit particularly hard by the economic

downturn and struggling to regain financial stability ever since. The aforementioned bills, AB 1x 26 and AB 1x 27, seek to dissolve Cali-

fornia’s statewide network of redevelopment agencies and a new, consolidated entity. The state expects to collect substantial revenue from the change: $1.7 bil-

El Monte Government to See Changes November BY BRYAN FILIPPONI El Monte’s government is set for some possible changes with a number of the elected officials’ terms nearing a close. Three out of the five city council members Mayor Andre Quintero, Mayor Pro Tem Patricia Wallach and council member Emily

Ishigaki terms end on November 8, 2011. Wallach was the first woman in fifty years to be elected to city council back in 1990. She became the first woman ever to be elected as El Monte mayor in 1992 and served three terms as mayor until 1999.

While she was mayor El Monte seen a boom in business establishing themselves in the community. Wallach has received these honors, listed on the El Monte official website, “The Golden Apple Award from the El Monte Union High School District

A new California state law (AB354) requires all students in grades 7 through 12 to show proof of having received the Tdap vaccine (on or after their 10th birthday) before starting school in August 2011. The law is mandatory and no school registration or school attendance will be allowed without Tdap documentation. Tdap is a booster vaccine for older children, adolescents and adults. It safely protects against three dangerous diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (also called pertussis). In order for the student

to receive the access code needed for online fall registration, a copy of the student’s yellow immunization card showing proof of the Tdap immunization needs to be brought to the Arcadia School District main office at 234 Campus Drive by August 1st. The AUSD office is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office is closed on Fridays. The Arcadia School District’s website (www.ausd. net) has detailed information

Employees Tied Up Robbed in South El Monte At approximately 7:30 P.M., on Thursday, July 7, 2011, three adult suspects entered Commonwealth International, on Barringer Street, South El Monte and tied up three employees. The suspects stole an unknown amount of cash and fled the location. The investigation is in its initial stages and Sheriff’s Crime Scene Investigators are on scene collecting evidence. None of the victims were injured. There is no more infor-
