Duarte Man Arcadia’s First Avenue School Sixth Shot in Graders Start Cancer Awareness Club Pasadena Identified At about 4:00 a.m. Sunday, the Pasadena police department received a call of “Shots Fired” in the 1000 block of Armada Dr. Officers responded to the call and checked the area but nothing was found. At approximately 5:22 a.m., an employee of the city parks department patrolling the area of the Rose Bowl parking lot notified Pasadena Police that as he was arriving for work he saw a Black male lying in a dirt area of

Sierra Madre Resident Demands Relief BY TERRY MILLER John Crawford, who ran an unsuccessful bid for a council seat last year, has filed an “Administrative Claim” regarding the Sierra Madre Water Rate Increase. The letter which was hand delivered and a copy sent via US mail to City Manager Elaine Aguilar, was stamped as received Feb. 24, 2011 In the letter, Crawford demands the city of Sierra Madre “Immediately Repeal the Ordinance after receipt of this administrative claim letter”. To do so, the matter, of course, would have to be agendized by city council. Crawford claims the city did not adequately notify owners (re: prop 218) and also that the notice originally sent out did not “contain the reason(s) for the proposed rate increase as required by Proposition 218.” Additionally Crawford

Organizers Plan to Protest Arcadia Mayor Amundson’s Breakfast Friday March 4 BY TERRY MILLER

his newspaper has been flooded with letters, e mails and comments on our websites in reaction to Mayor Amundson’s decision to spend city monies on a speaker from Focus on Family to speak at the annual Mayor’s Community Breakfast. There has been outrage, on both sides of the issue, regarding not only the rights of the gay community but also the rights of Amundson to choose whomever he desires to speak at the event. Several local groups and individuals have publically voiced their disapproval of
the choice of H B London who is slated to speak at the Friday breakfast at a recent city council meeting. Feeling unheard, several in the LGBT community including Pastor Rick Eisenlord countered the perceived bigotry with an All Family Barbeque Sunday in Pasadena. The idea was to encourage more free thinking and dialog between those who may have differences in lifestyles, sexual or otherwise. The protest this Friday will be held at 7 AM outside the site of Mayor’s Breakfast at Arcadia Community Center, 365 Campus Drive.

Pasadenans Required to Stop Outdoor Watering March 17 to 28 On Monday the Pasadena City Council declared a Level 4 Water Shortage Emergency during the temporary shutdown of a major regional water pipeline from March 17 through March 28. The city will enforce a total ban on outdoor watering with very few exceptions until pipeline deliveries resume. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), which supplies about 60 percent of Pasadena’s water, is planning a seismic retrofit of the F.E. Weymouth Water Treatment Plant in La Verne and will stop all water deliveries to Pasadena and neighboring cities through its upper feeder pipeline during the project. For those 10 days, Pasadena must rely solely on its groundwater and reserves. “Even though this shortterm supply cut is severe, we

Sierra Madre Mayor Mosca Delivers Upbeat State of City Address Despite Dark Clouds in State Forecast It was standing room only when we arrived at the very first official State of the City address Monday evening. The event was designed for Mayor Joe Mosca to recap the city’s achievements. The mood of the evening festive and confident with a little help from a number of songs sung by Sierra Madre Elementary School students which included the timeless classic “Let there be Peace on Earth.” After the many songs performed enthusiastically by young Sierra Madre pupils it was time for the adults to get down to business. Bu the time the 30 plus minute presentation by the students was
complete, there was room for the majority of those present to take a seat in the million dollar community room. Commenting that the 3rd graders were a hard act to follow, Mayor Pro tem John Buchanan introduced Mayor Joe Mosca. “I am very excited that tonight we are meeting in our newly remodeled Sierra Madre Community Room. This is one of our most recent accomplishments. Some of you may recall what the room looked like before it was updated – now we look forward to greater use of this facility for events such as this. “Mosca opened his remarks. He continued: “In fact,
just two weeks ago the Library’s “One Book One City program” used this room for a talk with the author of this year’s book, On Gold Mountain by Lisa See. The

andy Household Helpers! The Household Commander-in-Chief at my house believes that to meet the demands of her daily housekeeping she needs to use as many labor saving helpers as possible. My “Cleaning Queen” has been very resourceful in adapting many common items found around the house to accomplish the household duties. The following is a list of some of her proven household helpers that you may find useful: FABRIC SOFTENER SHEETS... They are great for getting rid of those ugly ants that come indoors to get out of a heavy rainstorm. Put them around your kitchen sink behind appliances. Scientists have determined that the sheets contain linalool, a pleasant smelling compound naturally found in basil, lavender and marjoram and the chemical in the dryer sheets really irritates and kills bugs. They also keep closets smelling fresh and yet do not scent up your clothing. They are great odor guards for old shoes. Best of all, when used they are great for keeping the shower doors and tile in showers sparkling clean. CLEVER USES FOR OLD COFFEE GROUNDS ... “Fridge freshener”: Put the dry grounds into an old margarine tub with holes poked in the lid. Place the tub in the refrigerator to absorb odors. Keep grounds in a can near the sink. Rub a
small amount over your hands after peeling onions, chopping garlic, or handling fish to get rid of the odor. You can recycle them as a fertilizer. They are great when spread over flowerbeds containing acid-loving plants such as azaleas and rhododendrons. REUSE OF PACKING BOX PEANUTS ... They make great drainage in the bottom of household flowerpots. They will also serve as pet bedding: Stuff peanuts into an old zippered pillow; cover it to create a soft bed for your dog or cat. Then use as an air freshener in their beds. Put a handful of packing peanuts into a potpourri jar and sprits with your favorite perfume to deodorize a room. USE OF POWDERED LEMON OR ORANGE DRINK MIXES... They are handy helpers for removing stains on the inside of your dishwasher door. To remove rust from the inside walls, pour 1/4 cup powdered lemon or orange drink, which contains citric acid or citric acid crystals, into the detergent cup and then run a regular cycle. Repeat as often as necessary. It is also useful in cleaning the stain buildup that sometimes occurs in the washing machine. REUSE FOR OLD PANTYHOSE... They make great garden-stake ties! A great strainer for old paint and they are good for gift-wrap storage: Keep rolls of gift paper neat and tatter-free by storing them in old
pantyhose -- one roll per leg -- and hanging them in the closet. Try pantyhose to scrub tile and other surfaces where you’re afraid of scratches. They are also great for applying polishes to silver, brass, gold, and other easily scratched metals. They are useful for flower bulb storage. Store seasonal bulbs in pantyhose and hang them up in a dry place to promote good air circulation. Oh yes, and old pantyhose are perfect for putting the spitshine on shoes. Oh yaa... in a pinch ... you can make a quick Halloween mask for your trick- or-treaters too! TOOTHPASTE... It’s an excellent cleaner behind those careless toothpaste users. It is very helpful around the sink to clean chrome: It will quickly shine sink fixtures. Just lightly rub over faucets with a wet sponge. It can also soothe skin to relieve itch from a mosquito bite. MUSTARD & KETCHUP PACKETS... If you get extra mustard or ketchup packets with a take-out meal, put them in the freezer. They make great mini ice packs for small boo-boos. REUSE OF OLD SPOUSES... Oh Yes, I too have been one of her “Handy Household Helpers” found around the house. I am regularly employing all of those helpers shown above in addition to my regular duties of doing the dishes, washing the laundry, folding the clothes, shopping and bringing her breakfast in bed each day.

Dorothy's Place (I have decided to rerun a column I did in April, 1999. While working on my income taxes yesterday, I was reminded of it.) I paid our income tax last week. I was feeling a little blue. If the IRS said I we owed so much, how come we didn’t have more left? I was trying to see the bright side. I was trying to convince myself things were good. I said, “Self, be thankful you owe something. It means you earned something.” I have a roof over my head. You can tell by looking at me, I’m not hungry. I’m able to get warm in winter and cool in summer. I have a new car, small, middle-of-the-line but it looks classy and I like it. Life is pretty good. Still, I had to pay the IRS for that goodness. So, I have a right to feel sorry for me. Another woman I know appears to have everything. Her home is gorgeous. She has a cleaning crew to keep it spotless. Her lawn is a perennial showcase, thanks to the hired gardeners. The hired maintenance company keeps the pool clean and clear. She just swims or has catered parties around it. The exercise room is well equipped. She has a personal trainer. And, treat of all treats, she has a masseuse who gives her regular massages. Her wardrobe looks like something straight out of the top fashion magazines. Her hairdresser keeps her dyed, dried, curled and coiffed at least twice a week. Her tax man came
to her house. He figured her taxes. She owed the IRS. She said she can’t understand. If she owes that much, how come she doesn’t have more left? She was feeling a little blue. I have to admit, I had a little trouble feeling sorry for her. Then she told me a story that I consider to be about the ultimate. This same woman believes in trading her car every other year, just because it is two years old. That is how she’s always done it. Last time, she bought a new Cadillac. Then shortly thereafter she decided to take a trip around the world. Her mechanic came out to the house and removed the battery from her new car. She was gone a year. She had a house sitter but not a car driver. It sat in the garage while she was gone. When she came home, the mechanic returned to replace the battery. He lifted the hood. Inside that beautiful garage attached to that luxurious home, common rats had gnawed all the wiring of her elegant Cadillac. I still have a little trouble feeling sorry for her, but I’m not feeling so blue any more. Meaning has returned to my life. I’m going to spend what I have left to print a bumper sticker. I’ll put it on my classy little car. It will read “The Rats Ate My Cadillac.” Who will know the difference? (I didn’t have to get the sticker printed. My Heart-son and wife got it for me. It is now 2010 and I’m still tooling around town in that same classy little car. It is still wearing that same sticker.)

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor: On this chilly morning I just sat down to the newspaper and a warm coffee in my cozy local caffeine station, Bean town. I opened your paper to the news of a Focus on the Family speaker at a community breakfast, and a letter to Dear Mayor Amundson, Mayor Pro Tem Kovacic, Council Members Chandler, Segal and Harbicht: I have heard that your city has invited a speaker from Focus on the Family to speak at a Community Breakfast on March 4, 2011. I wish to voice my Respose to David N. Parker: ~Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.~ Wow, I thought California was the place for people with open minds. AlDear Editor: I am responding to a article in your newspaper about Rev. H.B. London being the speaker at the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. My disappointment comes from the fact that
the editor applauding the city council for their decision to invite this person to such an event. “I applaud ...[the city council] ...for having the courage to select a speaker... who cares about family values.” I read, and suddenly the warm bonhomie I feel is replaced by a cold
shiver up my spine. Family values? What kind of family rejects its members for their sexual preferences? What kind of family campaigns to hurt, to discriminate, to impugn people simply based on how those people define their sexuality? Not my family. Not
my city. Hate and ignorance and fear have no place in my house, or in what I teach my child. I am straight, and I vote, and I am disgusted. Most sincerely,
concern about a speaker advocating a failed therapy not recognized as effective by any major medical association in the United States. Focus on the Family recommends this failed therapy even though the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association,
and the AMA all state that it not only cannot change sexual orientation or gender identity, but actually caused much harm. I am surprised that you would give such an organization a voice in your city and under Arcadia’s endorsement. I believe Arcadia needs to
show their community that Arcadia Focuses on and Accepts ALL Families – including those with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning family members.
though Focus on the Family claims non-profit status to promote families, their message is nothing but hate and money-making wrapped in a thin cloth. I cannot imagine what compelled Arcadia Mayor Amundson to invite a
person representing such a closed and narrow minded viewpoint to a community event. Hopefully, more people will organize and be outside the event having a true, sharing community breakfast on the sidewalk
than inside listening to hate and judgment. I wish you luck and success should the city decide to extricate yourself from this bad decision.
this event is already sold out. I would have loved to attend, as I know Pastor H.B. to one of the most kind and compassionate Pastors I have ever known. I was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Pasadena during
his pastorate there and was astounded at his personal care for my family during a period of difficulty. I know that I am not alone in my view. Thank you to the Mayor to have great courage to invite Pastor London.
Arcadia is a wonderful city because great people of sincere and genuine faith can be asked to lead events such as this.

Instructor Tim Fischer, M.F.A., a graduate from the California Institute of the Arts teaches three levels of guitar. Paramedics were called and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have now identified the body as that of Victor Franklin Cass, 57, of Duarte. Cass had two daughters, Chelsea Cass, 24, of West Covina and Victricia Cass, 35, of San Diego. He was married twice and divorced each time. He also apparently had an extensive criminal record including GTA, domestic battery and other charges. He was also dishonorably discharged from the Army. An autopsy will reveal how many shots struck Carr according to coroners. It is unknown if the incident
on Armada is related to the discovery of Cass. Detectives are investigating both incidents. Bird Walk and Talk Join Ornithologist Kimball Garrett, collections manager of the L.A. County Museum of Natural History, on a bird walk leaving the Duarte Historical Museum, 777 Encanto Parkway, Duarte, at 8 a.m. on Saturday March 12. Do-
nuts will be served before the walk at 7:15 a.m. Binoculars are helpful. The walk will generally remain in the Encanto Park area and trail along the river. The trip will proceed rain or shine. “We will look for the earliest spring migrants,

Crawford Demands Relief Continued from page 1 claims that the city of Sierra Madre “failed to send notices for every hearing on the proposed rate increase and revised rate increase as required by Proposition 218. Crawford goes on to say that the City of Sierra Madre also did not notify the non-English speaking residents of the proposed rate increase, which, according to Crawford, constitutes violations of due process. As with other claims that the city has violated Prop 218, this matter seems
to be a last ditch effort by a resident who questions the integrity of the law firm that represents the city’s interests. Sandy Levin has consistently claimed there has been no violation of Prop 218 rules and regulations. The Sierra Madre Weekly spoke with city Manager Elaine Aguilar Tuesday and she said “As far the city is concerned, we are satisfied that we have complied with Proposition 218.” Aguilar went on to say that “(Crawford’s letter) is
just another in a series correspondence we received regularly from citizens who may be upset at a city council decision. Technically, no action is required - we do not have to respond as it (Crawford’s letter) is not a lawsuit.” However, Aguilar said, as a courtesy, she would acknowledge receipt of Mr. Crawford’s letter.” The city manger also said that every council member has received a copy of the letter (which we will post on our website in due course).
City of Monrovia Announces Start of Major Street Resurfacing Project The City of Monrovia announced the commencement of a major street resurfacing project along both Huntington Drive and Duarte Road. The project’s preconstruction phase and logistical activities will begin in the affected areas on Wednesday, March 16th. Major construction work – which will have an impact on daily ve-
hicular traffic – will begin the following week, March 21st. This project is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2011. On West Huntington Drive, the project area will span from Fifth Avenue eastward to Magnolia Avenue. Meanwhile, on East Huntington Drive, the project area will go from Shamrock Av-
enue eastward to the eastern City limits beyond Mountain Avenue (please refer to attached map). On Duarte Road, the resurfacing work will cover Encino Avenue east to Magnolia Avenue. During construction periods, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction within the directly affected

IRS Has $129 Million for Californians Who Have Not Filed a 2007 Income Tax Return Refunds totaling more than $129 million may be waiting for nearly 124,000 Californians who did not file a federal income tax return for 2007, the Internal Revenue Service announced. However, to collect the money, a return for 2007 must be filed with the IRS no later than Monday, April 18, 2011. The IRS estimates that these potential 2007 refunds are $597 or more. Nationally, 1.1 billion may be waiting for nearly 1.1 million people who failed to file a 2007 federal income tax return. Some people may not have filed because they had too little income to require filing a tax return even though they had taxes withheld from their wages or made quarterly estimated payments. In cases where a return was not filed, the law provides most taxpayers with a three-year window of opportunity for claiming a refund. If no return is filed to
claim a refund within three years, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury. For 2007 returns, the window closes on April 18, 2011. The law requires that the return be properly addressed, mailed and postmarked by that date. There is no penalty for filing a late return qualifying for a refund. The IRS reminds taxpayers seeking a 2007 refund that their checks will be held if they have not filed tax returns for 2008 and 2009. In addition, the refund will be applied to any amounts still owed to the IRS, and may be used to offset unpaid child support or past due federal debts such as student loans. By failing to file a return, people stand to lose more than a refund of taxes withheld or paid during 2007. In addition, many low-and-moderate income workers may not have claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
The EITC helps individuals and families whose incomes are below certain thresholds, which in 2007 were $39,783 for those with two or more children, $35,241 for people with one child, and $14,590 for those with no children. Current and prior year tax forms and instructions are available on the Forms and Publications page of IRS.gov or by calling tollfree 1-800-TAX-FORM (1800-829-3676). If these efforts are unsuccessful, taxpayers can get a free transcript showing information from these year-end documents by calling 1-800-908-9946, or by filing Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, with the IRS.

Stressing that it hasn’t been easy for the city of Sierra Madre particularly in times with the State trying to balance its budget by “taking away our local financial resources.” Mosca said. Mosca said: “Tonight, I want you to know that despite one of the worst economic downturns in the history of our nation, our community is doing very well.” For this he received a loud round of applause. “As a community leader and a parent of two young boys that will soon be of school age, I am extremely proud of our public schools and appreciative of the extraordinary work performed by our teachers and our principals – Gayle Bluemel & Garrett Newsom; our children are certainly receiving a world class education right here in Sierra Madre!” During his speech, Mosca singled out Paul Hagen and thanked him for his public service. Citing a voter approved increase in the Utility Users Tax that goes toward paying for public safety (police, fire and paramedic) services, Mosca said the voter approved initiative requires the Council to create a” citizen oversight committee “to make sure that the funds are spent appropriately. “Last August, the Committee reported that the funds were indeed spent correctly. This year’s Committee is currently reviewing the financial information and will be making their determination in the next two months; While we need to continue to encourage the growth in our business community, especially when it comes to attracting relevant and useful businesses to our town, the fact remains that we do not receive a lot in sales taxes. We are more dependent upon property taxes, which is a much more of a
stable revenue stream, especially for our community. So, when other communities were witnessing a huge swing in their revenues, our revenues were relatively flat to a slight growth; Our community has always been fiscally prudent in our investments, revenue forecasts, and our expenditures. About 5 years ago, we enacted strategic planning that allows us to focus on the challenges coming up down the road. We also have a two year budget cycle that encourages long term thinking about our policies and priorities; The volunteer spirit is alive and well in our community. Without a doubt the value added to our community by volunteers is nothing less than extraordinary. Our Sierra Madre Volunteer Fire Department saves us more than a million dollars each year (as compared to a fully paid department). Additionally, our reserve police officers and volunteers at our Library and in our Recreation Department save us an immeasurable amount, and our community has been effective and highly successful in receiving funding from our county, state, and federal government. In fact, this facility here was renovated with approximately 1 million in grant funding from the county and federal government. Recently, we’ve also received federal funding for improvements made to our water system, a state library grant, and county funding to repairs our roads.” “We have a balanced budget, but the General Fund revenues remain flat and are not keeping pace with inflation. We are also seeing a fast rise in pension, healthcare, and energy costs; The state’s massive debt, structural deficit, and lack of effective solutions, negatively impacts our community. The state continues to believe that taking local revenues while pushing down further unfunded mandates is the way to govern. The threats to local government revenues, and to our local control, make it very difficult to plan for the future and to maintain our level of services. State has proposed the elimination of Redevelopment agencies, and we’ve had a Redevelopment Agency since the 1970s. City Council just last week approved use of Redevelopment Agency funds for im-
portant community projects (new restrooms at Memorial Park, new Pool pump, new water main in Sierra Madre Blvd, plus incentives to bring new businesses to Sierra Madre), but the projects can’t be completed if the state eliminates Redevelopment Agencies. Another element complicating our ability to plan for the future include the elimination of very important grants including the COPS fund, which helps fund our Police Department, and the state Library grants, which are vital to the sustainability of our first class library; While we have been able to pay for “current” services, we have not been able to find funds for “big” infrastructure items such as repairing our streets, replacing 80+ year old water mains, replacing our water wells, trimming all the trees, and replacing all the broken sidewalks. This problem is compounded by the fact that we have been deferring maintenance on our infrastructure for too long; That being said, though we have a tight budget, we are currently estimating that our next two year budget will also be balanced, assuming the state does not take any of our money.” Making reference to the Water tax which is being contested by some in town, Mosca said “Unlike our General Fund, our Water Fund was not balanced and our projections indicated that in a few short years all of our reserves would be spent. The increase that was ultimately approved was the first increase approved in the past five years. Mosca thanked those who attended the various outreach events and provided input into the water process.” The Council heard your concerns and eventually adopted an increase that was about half of what was originally proposed for the first year – 7.54% instead of 15.75%. The new rates aren’t effective until July 1st.” Mosca said. Citing that “This wasn’t an easy decision for the City Council” Mosca said maintaining local control was important to us.” Mayor Mosca said that the city was able to complete more than $800,000 in street improvements. PUSD’s Superintendent Diaz Resigns After Only 4 Years on Job
Edwin Diaz The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) announced that Superintendent Edwin Diaz will resign at the end of the current school year. Diaz has served as Superintendent of Schools for the 19,000 student, K-12 district since 2007. “The position of Superintendent requires an unmatched commitment of time, energy and passion in order to adequately serve students, staff and community –
a commitment I’ve enthusiastically embraced during the past four years,” Diaz stated. “After much deliberation and meaningful discussions with my family, I find at this stage of my life and career I want to pursue a more balanced and healthy lifestyle.” Superintendent Diaz, who was recently named Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) in Region XV has led PUSD with a focus on improving student achievement through rigorous instruction, expanding the capacity of the organization and its employees, and meaningfully engaging parents and community in student learning. Student achievement has soared by 52 points on the state’s Academic Performance Index over the past three years, surpassing the state’s rate of improvement. More PUSD schools have joined the “800 Club,” of schools that are considered high performing. A compre-
hensive and collaborative strategy incorporating dropout prevention and intervention programs for at-risk students has increased PUSD’s graduation rate. With an enhanced investment in the use of data to drive instruction and decision making, and stronger organizational systems, PUSD has improved its effectiveness and accountability and established credibility with a broad range of external partners. Mr. Diaz also led a major reorganization of the district’s facilities division, and the development of the district’s Facilities Master Plan. In 2009, voters approved Measure TT, a $350 million school improvement bond to repair and modernize the district’s aging schools. To date, 90 percent of projects have been completed on time and under budget. “I want to thank the many employees, community partners, parents, and students who have supported our efforts to improve Pasadena Unified over these past
four years,” said Diaz. “I strongly encourage all of you to continue to work together to implement the strategic plan, which represents the community’s highest dreams and aspirations for public
education in Altadena, Pasadena, and Sierra Madre. I have the utmost confidence in your ability to prepare our students for a future of limitless opportunities, and to build PUSD into one of the
nation’s strongest and most effective school systems.” Diaz’s resignation is effective August 2, 2011 and he is committed to supporting a smooth leadership transition.

Sixth Graders Start Cancer Awareness Club Continued from page 1 said the 10-year teaching veteran when we visited his classroom Tuesday. According to her classmates, one student - Samanta Beltrran, 12 - took it upon herself to really get the ball rolling. Samantha said her grandmother has cancer and she “really wanted to help raise some money for the cancer society to help with research and to find a cure.” “I knew it was really important and I wanted to help.” Beltran added with a huge, highly infectious grin on her face. The students were concerned why First Avenue wasn’t involved in the Relay for Life when other schools such as Arcadia High, for example, which already has a history with Relay for Life with their fundraising club - Hope Can Cure Cancer, is always involved. While these young people may have somewhat less life experience than the organizers of the Relay for Life, their combined boundless energies went into overdrive in their school and community and are well on the way to making history within their school. The students also got a petition together
requesting that the staff at First Aveune get involved. Spearheaded by Samanatha, fellow students in her science class quickly joined forces: Alas, the nucleus of the First Avenue Cancer Awareness Club was born. The core founders consists of: Emily Quach 12, Deniece Caraballo, 11, Victoria Medina, 11, Pauline Tjhin, 12, Christine Back 11, and William Zhang, 11. The club is fully functional as of this Thursday. During the first week in which the piggy bank appeared in Mr., Townsend’s classroom, the founding members raised over $260. The second week $165, and in the third week, $124. The fundraising continues as Samantha Beltran took her piggy bank around her neighborhood and collected from her neighbors. Thus far the students have raised nearly $600. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The young fundraisers (again spurned by Samantha Beltran) have collected stuffed toys which other students can purchase with the funds earmarked for Relay for Life. Samantha and her colleagues opened a giant garbage bag full of virtually
new, plush stuffed animals Tuesday that the pupils have brought in to help raise funds. This is just one of many ideas the young club has. Last year, Arcadia Relay for Life raised over $115,000 for research and this year, organizers hope to get near the $150,000 mark. Already in its ninth year, Arcadia’s Relay for Life will be held in June and once again at the Santa Anita Race Track infield. What will happen next with the students fundraising efforts remains to be seen but we feel confident that the energy and enthusiasm of a few very special students will have a huge impact on the lives of those afflicted with cancer and the families of those caring
for those in need. “It’s really heartwarming,” said Doug Townsend when he described his “lack of involvement” in the project. “It is all the kids’ idea, they’ll now make it official electing officers etc. It’s very exciting to see the energy and passion these sixth graders have.” Townsend said with a confident smile of approval as he watched his students count the latest round of cash collected. Grace as served as a member of the Mardi Gras Planning Committee since 2005. Dave has served on the Foundation Board of Directors since 2004 and is co-chair of the Planned Giving Committee and queen now serves on the Emergency Council. Each year, Mardi Gras proceeds support different hospital programs. This year, the event will honor Dave’s commitment to the emergency department, with proceeds going to support the hospital’s emergency services. During the last 50 years, the Mothers’ Club Family Learning Center of Pasadena has successfully reached out to low income families by providing them with a family literacy program that promotes strong parent-child relationships through education and social services. The Mothers’ Club still continues to be a model program in the field of family literacy. Its guiding principle is to educate both parent and child during children’s most vulnerable, impressionable
years – between ages birth and five years. The Mothers’ Club Family Learning Center, 980 N. Fair Oaks Ave., Pasadena, is in an environmentally friendly building that provides a comfortable setting in which two generations learn at the same time. With five classrooms for children ages zero to five years, as well as classrooms for adults enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) and Basic Education classes, the learning center prepares families
to succeed in school and in life. For children, that means readiness for kindergarten; for parents that means gaining language and basic skills that enable them to break the cycle of poverty. Continued from page 1 are confident Pasadenans will come together on this issue and follow the plan so we all will have enough water for drinking and everyday indoor uses,” said Eric Klinkner, chief deputy general manager of Pasadena Water and Power. “Since 2009 our water customers in Pasadena and Altadena have demonstrated their dedication to water conservation during the ongoing Level 1 water shortage, so I know they will rally again during the Level 4 plan.” Just before the pipeline shutdown, PWP will fill the city’s 14 reservoirs with about 80 million gallons of local groundwater and water imported from MWD. As these reserves fall during the 10-day shutdown, PWP will replenish reservoirs with up to seven million gallons of groundwater per day pumped from wells throughout Pasadena. All told, Pasadena can count on 150 million gallons during the shutdown, whereas
about 250 million gallons would be consumed under normal circumstances. “We have no other feasible suppliers to turn to and fill that 40 percent gap,” said Brad Boman, water engineering manager at PWP. “The only solution is to curb demand and be selfsustaining, which means a temporary ban on outdoor watering, which is the largest use of water citywide.” The city will lift current Level 1 Water Shortage restrictions from March 11 to 17 – the week before the shutdown – to allow customers to water any day of the week, as much as they think is necessary, to prepare their landscaping for the watering ban. PWP customers will have another week without restrictions after the shutdown ends before Level 1 Water Shortage restrictions resume. “Our horticultural consultants advice that most established plants and lawns can hold up well without
water for 10 days and even longer,” said Nancy Long, water conservation manager for PWP. “We are also telling our customers to consider rescheduling any new landscaping plans, since plants that aren’t yet established are much more vulnerable.” “We’ve already reached out to our large customers and mailed a citywide notice to help everyone get ready well in advance,” added Klinkner. “The feedback we’re getting shows people are looking at this short-term challenge as a perfect opportunity to prepare for potentially greater emergencies.” More information on the watering restrictions, tips on how to prepare and daily updates during the shutdown can be found at www. cityofpasadena.net/shutdown. But now that I have your undivided attention: I recently had the rare opportunity to visit the galley aboard Queen Victoria where chefs under the overall executive direction of Chef Patron Jean Marie Zimmerman create such world class cuisine on such a grand scale. We were sailing to Ensenada on Cunard’s Queen Victoria on truly calm seas and we had lots of questions for our host. The executive chef on Queen Victoria is Mark Oldroyd who gave us a tour of his highly polished and clean kitchen the day after we visited Ensenada. Mark is in charge of over 137 chefs aboard Queen Victoria alone (That’s one of the little known Victoria secrets). Mark and his twin brother Nicholas (who also is a Cunard chef aboard Queen Elizabeth) is a master at his art with a terrific sense of humour which helps the massive galley run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. “Never trust a skinny Chef” Oldroyd quipped as he led small group of journalists on a tour of the stunning two levels Galley on Queen Victoria. Oldroyd’s sense of humour was not lost on this enthusiastic group of eternally hungry reporters. “I just love cooking!” Said Executive Chef Mark Honing his culinary skills, he worked in England and in Michelin restaurants in France. A catering magazine ad caught his eye when the word CUNARD was read. A former employer worked for the Queen Mary and had always said good things about the company. So Oldroyd decided
to give it a try. Talking of his twin: “We started at the bottom and worked our way up.” This included time on the Queen Elizabeth 2, the QM2 and on the Queen Victoria. Mark is the executive chef on Queen Victoria and Nicholas is the executive chef on the new Queen Elizabeth. I know from a previous Cunard experience that food plays a major role once aboard, however I was not prepared for the additional pounds I gained those lovely four days in February. It seemed I was always eating. Not a bad thing at all, but with so many choices it was a tough assignment, really! I was taken aback at how spotless the kitchens were, especially when you consider the volume of food involved feeding about 2000 guests and 1001 crew – even on a small trip such as ours, the four—day Mexican getaway. But again, one of the first things I noticed on Queen Victoria was, in fact, the cleanliness and a great deal of attention being placed on the waterless hand sanitizers crew members offered guests throughout the journey. A very good policy indeed, I should think. Back to the galley tour: Mark explained how the kitchen runs so smoothly and how local produce is used whenever possible from various ports of call worldwide. One could see his interactions with staff: a very jovial fellow is this Oldroyd and you could see it was genuine with each interaction. Playful but healthy respect for a talented chef seems to be one of right ingredients for
a healthy, efficient kitchen. Perhaps this is the really Queen Victoria’s Secret: Convivial, well - natured staff and executives who treat one another as they expect to be treated. One thing I didn’t see was a power play in the galley: Often one see’s the raw, sometimes unsightly energy emitting from the head of such a large operation. Not so here! As Mark pointed out, each member of their staff plays a vital role…”we couldn’t do it alone” he said. With such a delightfully large variety of menu items, dietary restrictions and tastes one would think this a daunting task. But when you talk to Mark this theory evaporates. He makes it all seem so effortless and natural – which of course, is what a great chef is able to do. I couldn’t deny my British taste buds which were longing for the kippers one morning for breakfast. I’d not had kippers for many, many years. (For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this British tradition: Kippers are part of an ancient British tradition that spans thousands of years. The process involves curing and storing smoking herring. Interestingly, while the British have been producing smoked herring for generations, the term “kipper” has only been used in reference to herring since the mid-19th century. In fact, the verb “to kipper” still refers to any process where a food is salted or seasoned and then allowed to dry, whether in open air or smoked). While a bit of an acquired taste, any true Brit worth his salt will have tales of the best kipopers he’s ever had. Just watch out for the very thin bones. Queen Victoria’s kippers passed the rigorous test, and were indeed a hit at the breakfast table. No one walked away (often with fish, especially at Breakfast, the odor could be a bit strong – no so, once again) For the most part, I stuck to relatively traditional breakfasts suggested by our ultra-efficient server Anish in the Princess Grill. One morning he suggested Eggs Benedict (Sans the meat) for which my palate is eternally grateful. The salad and appetizers selections are breathtaking: How about Romaine, green leaf and green Oak, marinated cucumber, red onion with (of course) your choice of any of the splendid homemade dressings. Perhaps a couple of stuffed eggs with Russian Salad and Caviar would better suite your palate? Another popular fish aboard the Queen Victoria is the Scottish Smoked Salmon. Perhaps, some of the very best in the world. I sampled perhaps a bit more than my fair share of this Scottish delicacy served with thinly sliced red onion and capers. In a word: extraordinary! If that was all I had to eat during the voyage, I’d be truly a happy man. However, I had to select other menu items, if only for reaserch. Tough job, I know! When at the Todd English grill one time I had the Maine Crab Cake with Todd’s Fiery sweet and sour tomato sauce with whipped avocado and cucumber salad. Shall I go on? That was the starter, now I must find room for Flat Bread with Forest Mushrooms ans Asparagus tips. Some of my meat
eating colleagues said the Pork Sausage Fazzoletti with pumpkin seed pesto and chillies with Pecorino was devine. Whatever we selected seemed to bring a smile to our table from the presentation to the wonderful moment you first sample the meal prepared by such expert hands on one of the most respected ocean liners in the world. My wife says I use superlatives far too often, but then: However, she has yet to sail aboard a CUNARD ship and dine in some of the best floating restaurants in the world. Therefore, I shall use, with poetic license, as many superlatives as I deem necessary! Now I’m not particular fan of sweet desserts so I usually opted for the cheese plate, which each night was a little different with some cheeses I’d not sampled the previous eve-
ning. The British crackers, walnuts and butter were a perfect accent to this. I did also sample the afternoon tea, which of course, is a very British tradition still adhered to in the UK. A selection of delicate sandwiches (crust cut off, naturally) accompany your choice of a pot of tea which is provided with a rather cool triple egg timer – so you’ll know exactly when your tea is steeped perfectly. A novel idea but practical for anyone who really knows his tea! Again, as with other meals, the service during afternoon tea – complete with white gloves – was impeccable. After a selection of sandwiches I was offered a select choice of cakes and sweets and, of course, a scone with clotted cream and the most marvelous jam ( I believe it was Cross and Blackwell blackcurrant) Jully good, I say without reservation.
As for all the other restaurants aboard Queen Victoria, I barely had the time to try them all except perhaps Brittannia, with it’s two levels, it is a very impressive formal dinner venue. We attended the 8:30 pm seating and had a terrific dining experience. There was a little more noise in Britannia but as it seats so many, this is hardly surprising. The food, service and ambiance were, again, beyond reproach. With so many chefs and support staff aboard, I still found it amazing that they were able to get the correct menu selections to the correct tables in such a timely manner. My other haunt, if you will was the Golden Lion. A British Pub atmosphere – British beers and ales as well as some pretty good fish and chips. About the only thing I was disappointed with was the Ploughman’s Lunch. The bread wasn’t crusty, there were only white cocktail onions (instead of larger pickled onions) and the cheese was in small supply). However, the friendly service and Bass ale quickly took my thoughts elsewhere and I stuck to the tried and true Fish and Chips on more than one occasion. Cunard has truly outdone their maritime reputation with Queen Victoria’s restaurants and service. I can, without hesitation, say that if you’re able to join Cunard on a cruise or crossing, you’ll not regret one minute of your experience. The wonderful memory of dining on the originally Queen Mary in 1965 while crossing the Atlantic from Southampton to New York has never left my little gray cells. I now can say , having sailed Queen Victoria, that no longer are her splendid and select restaurants a secret but a brilliant reality – an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. Thank you Cunard, for continuing a tradition of hospitality, passion for history and love of the extraordinary cuisine and service on the open seas. This new radio station gives us one more way to get emergency information out to residents when it is most needed. This is part of our effort to make local government more user friendly and to get timely, useful information out to the community; We formed the General Plan Steering Committee and started the process of updating our 1996 General Plan. Essentially, the General Plan could be likened to a blueprint for our community; that is, it contains our vision – who are we and who will we be in say 20 or 30 years in the future – and goals for achieving that vision. This is a very large undertaking and a very important one. We are off to a great start with some amazingly talented individuals volunteering their time to help revise the General Plan. The General Plan Steering Committee is holding their next Town Hall Forum at the Sierra Madre Fire Station on May 7th from 1 PM to 4 PM. I encourage you to participate. Please complete your General Plan survey if you’ve not done so already; We formed the new Green Committee, which is helping us to become a more environmentally sustainable
community and to develop new ideas for dealing with old problems; We are currently considering a new Canyon Zone Ordinance that will take into consideration the uniqueness of the canyon when it comes to development standards. Another element complicating our ability to plan for the future include the elimination of very important grants including the COPS fund, which helps fund our Police Department, and the state Library grants, which are vital to the sustainability of our first class library; While we have been able to pay for “current” services, we have not been able to find funds for “big” infrastructure items such as repairing our streets, replacing 80+ year old water mains, replacing our water wells, trimming all the trees, and replacing all the broken sidewalks. Don Stewart was a Gentle Man 1929 - 2011
BY SUSAN MOTANDER Don Stewart died early in the morning on Sunday, February 20. He was born on April 21, 1929 which made him 81 when he died. But he did so much with those years. He will be missed, especially by me. He was the cause of the first fight I had with my husband. We were planning a trip to San Francisco and I told my husband I would call my travel agent. My husband objected and insisted on using his agent. He argued for almost five minutes before we realized we were arguing about the same man. That is the sort of loyalty he developed in the people with whom he worked. He even arranged the last flight I took in December last year. Don was a native Monrovian, living his entire life on North Myrtle Avenue. He attended Mayflower Elementary School, Ivy Avenue School (now Clifton) and graduating from Monrovia High School in 1947. In that same year he became an Eagle Scout. He was also a member of

the Order of De Molay and later served as adult advisor to them. He was what he liked to call a Tin Can Sailor, serving, originally in the Naval Reserves until his activation during the Korean “Police Activity”. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He was a lifelong, 52 year member of the Monrovia (now Duarte) Elks Lodge. My grandfather used to say that the B.P.O.E. didn’t just stand for Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, but also for Best People on Earth. For Don, it fits. The list of his civic activities is lengthy. He joined the Monrovia Rotary Club in 1958 and was its president in 1978-1979. During that time he also was involved with the Junior Chamber of Commerce, The Monrovia Day Association and the Monrovia Alumni Association (on whose Scholarship Committee he served for many years). He was a Deacon at the Monrovia First Presbyterian
Church and for many years served as an usher on Sunday mornings. Art Thomas usually shared that duty with him and they were great friends. Thomas said that one thing he will also remember about Don is that he had a police scanner and that when he heard a siren, he would monitor the police calls. “Then his friends knew who to call to find out what was happening.” Thomas also said that despite rumors to the contrary, When he and Don shared the back pew they were only discussing “Tony’s sermons... but don’t ask me to swear to that.” Stewart was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Herman Stewart and his “Sweetheart” of 38 years, Gladys Lashbrook. He is survived by Gladys’ daughters, his “girls”, Pat Buchanan and Judi Balek, their 5 children and 13 grandchildren, all of whom called him Grandpa Don. He is also survived by his many friends, especially, Ann Stewart and Kathy Kneip

At Don’s request, his remains will be cremated and scattered at sea, the words of the Naval Commitment to the sea, “with the sure and certain knowledge...”

For the period of Sunday, February 20, through Saturday, February 26, the Police Department responded to 985 calls for service of which 120 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period. Sunday, February 20: Around 9:27 a.m., a license plate check on an Acura revealed that the license plate belonged to a Chevy. A traffic stop was conducted at Sunset and Balboa and investigation revealed that the 33-year-old male Caucasian had switched the license plate because the Chevy plate had a valid registration. Additional license plates from vehicles destined for the salvage yard were also found. The driver was arrested for expired registration, unlawful display of registration, no proof of insurance, and an outstanding warrant. A traffic stop was initiated at Peck and Clark around 7:58 p.m. on a vehicle that had a warrant attached to it. A 34-year-old male Hispanic was taken into custody for driving on a suspended license, providing a false name to officers, and a $20,000 outstanding warrant. Monday, February 21: Between 3:15 p.m. on February 18 and 8:02 a.m. on February 21, a commercial burglary occurred in the 00 block of West Foothill. Unknown suspect(s) entered the business by removing a glass pane from a glass door. The suspect(s) then ransacked the office and stole cash, iPod dock speakers, and a bottle of Valium. Another commercial burglary occurred in the 1000 block of North Santa Anita between 6:30 p.m. on February 19 and 10:42 a.m. on February 21. Unknown suspect(s) broke the door handle to enter the hair salon and took property. Tuesday, February 22: Units were called to BJ’s restaurant around 5:15 p.m. in reference to an employee refusing to leave the location. A 25-yearold male Hispanic employee showed up to work and began drinking beer at the bar. When the manager told him to leave for being intoxicated, he refused. The suspect was combative and pushed and spat at officers. The man was arrested for battery, obstructing/resisting, and disorderly conduct. A private person’s arrest was made at Arcadia Presbyterian Church, 121 Alice, around 10:12 p.m. A 27-year-old male Caucasian transient was found inside a music room after hours and was taken into custody for trespassing and 3 outstanding warrants totaling $120,000.
Wednesday, February 23:
A residential burglary occurred in the 200 block of West Las Flores between 9:45 a.m. and 10:03 a.m. A male Hispanic, posing as an AT&T employee, confronted an elderly resident outside the home and indicated that he needed to check out the phone lines inside the house. While the resident accompanied the man during the inspection, another male Hispanic suspect entered the house, ransacked rooms, and stole cash from a bedroom. The theft was captured on surveillance video. Between 10:00 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 500 block of West Wistaria. Unknown suspect(s) pried open a rear sliding glass door, ransacked rooms, and stole cash, expensive jewelry and watch, flatscreen television, laptop computer, and other electronic equipment. Thursday, February 24: Units responded to the 1100 block of West Duarte around 2:41 p.m. in reference to a domestic dispute. During an argument, the suspect choked and struck his wife. The victim had abrasions, scratch marks, and redness to her neck. An emergency protection order was obtained and served. A traffic collision occurred at East Foothill and North Santa Anita around 5:00 p.m. Investigation revealed that a car was stopped at a red traffic signal when an intoxicated driver rear-ended the stopped vehicle. A 53-yearold male Caucasian was arrested for DUI, driving on a suspended license for DUI, and no proof of insurance. Friday, February 25: A grand theft occurred at the Arcadia High School boys’ gym between 2:00 p.m. on February 18 and 8:00 a.m. on February 22. A $3500 violin was stolen from an unsecured locker. Loss prevention personnel from Hollister detained a male juvenile for theft around 1:06 p.m. Investigation revealed that two male Hispanic suspects entered the store with shopping bags. The suspects concealed merchandise in the bags and fled the scene when they were confronted by store personnel. After a lengthy foot pursuit, a 17-year-old suspect was apprehended and taken into custody for commercial burglary. Store merchandise worth about $627 was recovered. Saturday, February 26: Around 12:29 p.m., units responded to an art school located in the 500 block of South First in reference to a commercial burglary that just occurred. A male African-American suspect, 18-20 years of age, entered the reception area and stole a laptop computer and a wallet. The reception area was occupied by
children and adults during the time of the theft. Loss prevention personnel from Sport Chalet advised that they had detained two women for theft around 3:06 p.m. The suspects brought large shopping bags into the store and filled them with snowboarding equipment and clothing. Private persons’ arrests were made, and the Caucasian women, ages 18 and 19, were taken into custody for commercial burglary.

Sunday, February 20th: 12:56 AM- DUI Alcohol/Drugs, Baldwin Ave and Hampton. An officer stopped a motorist for a Vehicle Code violation, and determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The El Monte resident was a r rested a n d taken to the Pasadena Police Department jail for booking. Monday, February 21st: 3:29 PM- Breaking/ Removing Vehicle Parts, 400 blk. W. Sierra Madre Blvd. A Sierra Madre resident reported to the Police Department that an unknown subject(s) stole the passenger side rear view mirror during the night. 8:02 PM- Tampering/Injuring Vehicle or Contents, 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd, City Park Community Building. An officer responded to broken rear passenger side window. The Sierra Madre resident reported that no items were taken from the vehicle. The suspect(s) fled in an unknown direction. 10:16 PM- Auto Burglary, 100 blk. E. Highland Ave. Unknown suspect(s) opened the victim’s driver’s side door and stole a backpack. The backpack included the victims Apple power book, Annual Disney Pass, and her California Driver’s license. 11:12 PM- Auto Burglary, 600 blk. W. Montecito Ave. Unknown suspect(s) smashed a front passenger window using an unknown object. The suspect stole a black Targus Computer case and a Compaq Computer. Tuesday, February 22nd: 10:22 AM- Possession of
Marijuana/1oz or less, 1000 blk. N. Michillinda Ave. Motorist was stopped for a Vehicle Code violation. Investigation revealed that the Pasadena resident was under possession of a small clear plastic baggie containing marijuana. The driver was cited and released on the field. Saturday, February 26th: 11:18 PM- Possession of Marijuana/1oz or less, 50 blk. Lowell Ave. Motorist was stopped for a Vehicle Code violation. Investigation revealed that the Pasadena resident was under possession of marijuana. The driver was cited and released on the field.
Monrovia PD
During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 434 service events, resulting in 91 investigations. Following are the last week’s highlighted issues and events: Grand Theft On February 17 at 4:43 p.m., the victim of a grand theft came into the police station. He reported that he parked his vehicle in a parking lot at Myrtle and Pomona in the morning. When he returned in the afternoon, he found someone had stolen the catalytic converter off his 2004 Toyota Pickup. Investigation continuing. Felony False Impersonation On February 17 at 10:33 p.m., a male subject was arrested in San Bernardino County for a Monrovia battery warrant from an incident that occurred in 2001. An officer was sent to bring the suspect to the Monrovia jail. The officer dispatched had investigated the original case and discovered the suspect was actually the mother of the male subject’s children and she had used his name and information to identify herself to officers in 2001, and on other cases as well. This resulted in the warrant being issued for the wrong person, the male subject. A felony false impersonation report was completed by the officer and the warrant was reentered into the system with a note as to the true suspect. Possession of a Controlled Substance - Suspect Arrested On February 18 at 10:36 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the High School in the 800 block of West Colorado regarding a male student being detained. When the officer arrived, he learned the student had been
brought into the discipline office for wearing a t-shirt with the word ecstasy written across the front, which is a school dress code violation. While in the office, the student became very nervous and kept reaching into his pocket. School security searched him and found three ecstasy pills in his pants pocket. The student was arrested, booked, and later released to a parent. Domestic Violence - Suspect Arrested On February 18 at 7:25 p.m., a male subject came home and got into an argument with his wife. During the ongoing argument, the wife tried to take the husband’s phone from him. He responded by biting her hand, causing visible injury. He was arrested for domestic violence. Grand Theft On February 19 at 9:58 a.m., an officer responded to the 500 block of West Lime regarding a grand theft report. The victim told the officer he parked his vehicle on Mayflower the evening before, but did not lock it. He returned to his vehicle in the morning and saw the interior had been ransacked and some property taken. Investigation continuing. Vehicle Burglary On February 19 at 5:48 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a business parking lot in the 500 block of West Huntington. The victim had parked his vehicle in the parking lot and secured it. When he returned, he saw the door lock had been punched and the third row seat had been taken. Investigation continuing. Commercial Burglary On February 19 at 9:34 p.m., loss prevention from a business in the 500 block of West Huntington observed three suspects cutting tags off of and secreting items on their persons. Officers responded and were in place when the suspects left the store with the merchandise. The officers detained the suspects without incident. Stolen merchandise was found on all three of the suspects. One suspect was found to be on probation for burglary and another was on parole for robbery. A consent search of their vehicle revealed further merchandise that is believed to be stolen from another retail store. The three suspects were arrested and taken into custody. Grand Theft Auto Recovery On February 20 at 9:07 a.m., an officer was patrolling a shopping center parking lot in the 600 block of West Huntington. The officer noticed an unoccupied vehicle and discovered it to be a stolen vehicle. The ve-
hicle is a 1999 Honda Civic and was reported stolen February 19 out of Baldwin Park. The officer recovered the vehicle. Grand Theft On February 20 at 10:48 a.m., an officer responded to a business in the 1400 block of South California regarding a theft of copper wire. Suspects removed a large amount of copper wire from a spool at a business. The suspects possibly gained access from a back alley. Investigation continuing. Non-Injury Traffic Collision On February 20 at 11:36 a.m., an officer responded to a solo traffic collision at Myrtle and Colorado. A driver was attempting to make a turn onto Colorado from Myrtle when he hit the signal on the corner and knocked it down. Monrovia Fire Department and the Edison Company responded for exposed live wires. Residential Burglary On February 22 at 5:59 p.m., officers responded to a residential burglary in the 300 block of North Mountain. It appears the suspect entered through an unlocked door and stole miscellaneous valuables from the home. Two shotguns were taken, but the suspect left them on the lawn as he fled the area, he may have been startled by a neighbor. During the investigation, it was discovered that a neighbor had seen a suspicious subject sitting in a parked vehicle just south of the victim’s house at approximately 7:10 a.m. The subject is described as an 18-19 year old male, 5’ 10”, with a thin build. He was sitting in an older model, Dodge Plymouth minivan, white in color, with the engine running. The neighbor did not report the suspicious subject to police. Investigation continuing. Vehicle Burglary On February 23 at 6:13 p.m., officers responded to a vehicle burglary that occurred in a hotel parking lot in the 700 block of West Huntington. A window on the vehicle was smashed and a purse was stolen. Investigation continuing. Unreported Grand Theft Auto - Suspect Arrested On February 24 at 5:14 a.m., the Los Angeles Police Department called to report they had been in pursuit of a 1995 Saturn and had one male suspect in custody. They requested a Monrovia officer contact the registered owner, who lives in the 200 block of East Pomona. The vehicle was stolen from the street in front of the registered owner’s residence during the night. The victim was unaware of the theft and does not know the suspect.
