John Shear 90, Local Artists to Showcase their Shields Girl Work during Wistaria Festival from Horse this Sunday, March 20 Veteran Santa Anita Paddock Guard John Shear was injured Saturday as he threw himself in front of a young girl in order to protect her from a loose horse, prior to the running of the third race. Shear, a former jockey who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, has been a fixture at Santa Anita for decades. Prior to the incident, he was in his normal position holding the rope on the west entrance of the track’s walking ring. Sea and Sage, a 3-yearold gelding who had started twice previously at the current meet, was in the walking ring with nine other horses who were readying for the upcoming race. Sea and Sage wheeled, freeing himself from his handler and in a 180 degree about-face, sprinted towards the opening Shear was guarding just outside the walking ring. City of Pasadena Issues Fraud Alert A woman calling herself an environmental health inspector with the Pasadena Public Health Department has been approaching local restaurants, claiming to be there to inspect their premises for safety violations in exchange for cash payment. City of Pasadena environmental health inspectors always carry official city identification and business cards, do not handle cash transactions under any circumstances and always provide official inspection reports. If you are approached by anyone falsely claiming to be a city of Pasadena employee, call the Pasadena Police Department at (626) 744-4241 so a report can be filed.

BY DOROTHY DENNE Since on March 17 everyone is either Irish or pretends to be, I looked in my files for some Irish tales. I chose the least naughty for you. Honest. Murphy: Murphy was staggering home with a pint of booze
in his back pocket when he slipped and fell heavily. Struggling to his feet, he felt something wet running down the back of his leg. “Please Lord,” he implored, “let it be blood!!” The Reunion: A man stumbles up to the only other patron in a bar and asks if he could buy him a drink. “Why of course,” comes the reply. The first man then asks, “Where are you from?” “I’m from Ireland,” replies the second man.
The first man responds, “You don’t say? I’m from Ireland too! Let’s have another round to Ireland.” “Of course,” says the second. Curious, the first asks, “Where in Ireland?” “Dublin,” comes the reply. “I can’t believe it. Me too! Let’s have another round of drinks to Dublin.” “Of course.” The second man can’t help himself so he asks, “What school did you attend?” “Saint Mary’s,” replies the first man. “Really? I
graduated from there in ‘62.” “Me too.” “This is becoming unbelievable,” they say in unison. About that time, in comes one of the regulars and sits down at the bar. “What’s up?” he asks the bartender. “Nothing new,” replied the bartender. “The O’Malley twins are drunk again!” Lost at Sea: Two Irishmen, Patrick & Michael, were adrift in a lifeboat following a dramatic escape from a burning
freighter. While rummaging through the boat’s provisions, Patrick stumbled across an old lamp. Secretly hoping that a genie would appear, he rubbed the lamp vigorously. To the amazement of Patrick, a genie did come forth. This particular genie, however, stated that he could only deliver one wish, not the standard three. Without giving it much thought, Patrick blurted out, “make the entire ocean into Guinness beer.” The genie clapped his hands with a deafening crash,
and immediately the entire sea turned into the finest brew ever sampled by mortals. Simultaneously the genie vanished. Only the gentle lapping of Guinness on the hull broke the stillness as the two men considered their circumstances. Michael looked disgustedly at Patrick whose wish had been granted. After a long, tension-filled moment he spoke. “Nice going Patrick! Now we’re going to have to pee in the boat.” Happy St. Pat’s folks.

“Going Green” is a popular phrase today! In essence, most everyone knows that it refers to employing activities around the home that can help improve our environment. Many people are being more conscientious about not wasting tap water and turning off lights whenever possible. By turning down the furnace temperature at night during winter months and raising the furnace air conditioning temperature during summer months it can be another great contributor toward improving our environment. If everyone would give a higher priority to the nations “Going Green” efforts we would make a big difference toward protecting our nation’s environment for today and for future generations! However, the term “Going Green” has a totally different meaning around my house. My Irish Colleen wishes everyday was St Patrick’s Day. On March 17th every year I get a giant taste of the Irish culture. She says that St Patrick’s Day would not be the same to her without all things being “Green”. She wears green clothing, decorates with green and she prepares a totally green menu. She would surely be
lost without her bottle of green food coloring on that day, which gives her an unintended green tongue. My “Green Lassie” says, it’s a special time for young and old alike, to wear the green and put on a smile while you enjoy celebrating the occasion of Irish customs. Now how can I put on a smile...when my “Shamrock Queen” goes utterly crazy celebrating the day as she colors my world green? She always opens the day with “Top of the Mornin” Dear ... Breakfast is ready”. Oh sure ... now would you smile if you woke up to green eggs and green pancakes smothered with green butter and mint jelly? Ugh, what a sight. And that is how my day started last year and ... it never got any better. Shortly thereafter, I was informed that her sister-inlaw and her brother were going to spend the day with us and that she was bringing many of her favorite dishes. Spending the day with those two, is like having two “Mother-in-laws for the day and to bring her home cooking to our table made even our dog growl and turn up his nose! But the Best or Worst based upon your heritage ... was yet to come. Her sister-in-law’s din-
ner contribution was green pasta, served with green pesto sauce, nearly raw chicken breast with green gravy and green mashed potatoes. All of those items luke warm. Of course my “Irish Chef” had to top those “gourmet delights” with her own Gastronomic Extravaganza. Split pea soup, of course, everybody’s favorite (gulp), green hot cross buns slathered with green cheese, a hot vegetable of creamed spinach, a veggie plate of celery, brocalli, cold green beans all layered upon bib lettuce (which should have been referred to as bitter lettuce. The choice of deserts included green mint sherbet or Slime Jello pudding, which she called Leprechaun desert. Thank goodness for the “Green Chardonnay” I was able to wash down all of those questionable delicacies. After a four glass wine binge, eating the dinner was becoming enjoyable??? Well, at most St. Patrick’s Day celebrations you will hear “Erin Go Braugh” a very common Irish term bantered about. It means “Ireland Forever”. But at my house it means ... It will be only three hundred sixtyfive days until I have to turn green all over again!

Assembly member Portantino Names Arcadia Chamber Executive as 2011 “Woman of the Year” Assembly member Anthony Portantino has chosen Arcadia Chamber of Commerce Director, Beth Costanza as his 2011 Woman of the Year. Costanza was selected from the residents of the 44th district because of her tireless commitment to the community. She will
be honored at a ceremony at the State Capitol on March 21. Beth Costanza who is retiring later this month, has a long history of service in both Arcadia and Monrovia. Prior to heading the Arcadia Chamber, Costanza worked for the Monrovia Cham-

SADD’s mission is to provide students with the best prevention tools available to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, impaired driving and other destructive decisions The students of Blair Jr./Sr. High School were “incredibly supportive of SADD” according to Bobbi Fielding who was personally on campus Friday
as 180 students signed up to become members of SADD and signed the “Contract For Life”. This contract means the students have “made a decision to learn how to make positive choices, be strong leaders in their school and stay above the influences of destructive behaviors.” Fielding added “I am so proud to be a part of this revolution that is giving the students of our community the education they need to lead healthier lives.” The students with whom we spoke on Friday said they were pleased to have dialog about things like bullying and substance abuse.

Barbara DeKovnerMayer’s concern about the hard times the Russian people would face as their economic system evaporated after the fall of Communism prompted her to write a letter to Pravda. The response to this letter’s publication in 1991 was an avalanche of letters, highlighting the needs for non-perishable foods, nonprescription medicines, etc. The letters moved Barbara, a former dancer and journalist, to tears. She began begging friends and family to send these items. With the arrival of more pleading letters, her desire to help was exceeded by the requests. Thus began
Friends Assisting Friends, a non-profit foundation that aids Russian families. After trips to Russia and living with some of her correspondents, she was able to provide further assistance by arranging for the sale of handicrafts here in the U.S. In the last eight years, she has learned to speak and write Russian, becoming a lifeline for more than 130 impoverished families with supplies ranging from toothpaste to warm winter coats. Life saving surgery, medical supplies, writing materials for Russian school children, seminars for Russians hoping to start new careers and invent new technology are

Sea and Sage collided with Shear, who remained conscious, responsive and was moving when he was attended to by on-site First Aid personnel and later by members of the City of Arcadia Fire Department. Shear was taken by ambulance to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena for further evaluation. Sea and Sage emerged from the incident uninjured and was caught in the Santa Anita stable area, whereupon he was returned to his stall at trainer Gary Mandella’s barn. The condition of injured 90-year-old paddock guard John Shear has improved “one hundred eighty degrees” over what it was Saturday night at Huntington Memorial Hospital according to a family member. Shear, who was injured
while shielding a 6-year-old girl from a runaway loose horse, was hospitalized Saturday afternoon following the accident that occurred prior to Santa Anita’s third race. “I went and saw him last night in I.C.U. (intensive care unit) and he didn’t look good,” said Shear’s son, Mike, 44. “His voice wasn’t good and his face was black and blue. I went back this morning to see him at 10:30 and there was a complete, 180 degree turnaround. He was sitting upright, talking, laughing and completely coherent and he’s stable. “He’s got multiple fractures. I’m not sure about all of them, but we do know he has one fracture in his pelvic area. He was hurt about four years ago in a paddock accident at Hollywood Park and the doctors inserted a rod in that area which may’ve been dislodged yesterday. “The doctors think this has caused some internal bleeding in that bone area and he did lose a significant amount of blood yesterday. The latest word is that he’s not going to have to undergo
surgery at this time, which is great news,” said Shear. Shear’s act of selfless heroism has created national interest, far beyond the scope of horseracing. “I’m completely blown away and humbled by the response from fans at the track and from those on all the social media sites. It’s amazing how many people that don’t even know my dad have expressed their well wishes,” said Shear. “My dad does about 35 pushups a day and he eats well and stays fit. I think that’s the biggest reason he’s recovering so quickly. I’m extremely proud of him. I’m the most proud of him that I’ve ever been. He’s overcome a lot in his life—from where he came from and what’s he’s been able to accomplish. “We’re not really sure how long he’s going to have to stay in the hospital. A lot depends on whether he’s going to (eventually) need surgery. “We’ll probably know more later today.” John Shear has been employed at Santa Anita Park since Dec. 23, 1961.

Sierra Madre Playhouse brings Wilder’s Classic “Our Town” to our Town BY FRAN SYVERSON Nuthin’ like the hometown newspaper to find out what’s goin’ on in Grover’s Corner, is there? So Christian Lebano strolls onstage, plunks down on a bench, and settles in with his newspaper. Kinda stares out at the audience, now and then, as if tryin’ to figure out what they’re doin’ watching him. Gets up, stretches. Then, as some folks mosey onto the scene and sit themselves down quietly, facing the back and sides of the stage, Lebano as the Stage Manager begins to let us in on the goings-on in “Our Town.” For he’s the narrator, the thread that holds the story together, and who tells us more, probably, than even the hometown paper would about life in the early 1900s in New Hampshire. There’ll be three acts, he tells us. First, in “Daily Life” we’ll meet the town characters. “Love and Marriage” is self-explanatory. Finally, we take an out-of-thisworld trip in “Death and Eternity.” Does this sound trite? Scarcely! It’s profound in a quiet way, the way in which most of us live our lives, with the ongoingness of our joys and sorrows. It’s a simple story, one about the folks and their daily rituals in Grover’s Corner. Playwright Thornton Wilder wanted it simple, even to the stage setting. His script specifies, for example, that two ladders are used to symbolize upstairs windows in the Gibbs and Webb households. Standing part way up the ladders, teenag-
ers George Gibbs and Emily Webb call across to each other about homework. Set designer Nick Santiago has followed Wilder’s cues, choosing only plain wooden tables and chairs as the furniture. Not only the setting is minimalistic, but also the acting. Much of it is pantomimed, with the ladies dusting their homes, picking over the fresh green beans, setting breakfast out for their families. Their phantom gestures are so convincing that, before long, we think we’re seeing the beans and the coffee. One audience member was heard to say that when the drugstore clerk made sodas for George and Emily, he could almost see the cherry plopping onto the top of the soda. From time to time, actors come alive on cue from the Stage Manager, rising from their chairs to play out a scene. A warm and motherly Mrs. Gibbs (Lynn Ann Leveridge) dreams of going to Paris or someplace “where they don’t speak English” once in her life. Michael Prichard as Dr. Gibbs is good at dampening her spirits about such an unlikely trip. Next door, Nancy Youngblut portrays a tightlaced Mrs. Webb, efficient at both homemaking and parenting. Mr. Webb (Don Savage) offers young George, on his wedding morn, some muddled advice about women. Both Emily (Lila Dupree) and George (Ryan Burke) are appropriately nervous as they start to take the Big
Step. Later, in the final act in heaven, Emily plays a poignant and defining role as she relives her 12th birthday and realizes the beauty and fullness of her life on earth. Most cast members play multiple roles of the townspeople—the milkman, editor, too talkative professor, church organist (does he tipple too much?) Alphabetically, they are Ray Chao, Benjamin Gould, Austin Grehan, Tamika Katon-Donegal, Brandon McCluskey, and William Stamey, with Rhys Pugh and Cassie Yeager as understudies. Liz Peterson and Shon Le Blanc use Valentino’s Costumes to depict the era, and also to evoke the image of each personality. Costume changes are simple, too—perhaps just the donning or doffing of an apron. Wilder’s play, which won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, is produced at the Sierra Madre Playhouse by Estelle Campbell. It is directed by Sabina Ptasznik, whose perceptive notes about “Our Town” are included in the program that was designed as a vintage newspaper by Susan Henderson. Juliana McBride is stage manager, and also lighting and sound tech. Stephanette Isabel Smith designed the lighting, and Adam Fish the sound. Japanese Garden in Sierra Madre Celebrates 80 Years Continued from page 1 Discovery Room of Sierra Madre School, Lower Campus, this Saturday March 19 from 1 to 3 pm. Debbie Henderson will be available give an overview of Japanese American community in Sierra Madre and their garden gift. Mitsuo Kunihiro will be discussing school days at Sierra Madre circa 1930s and talking about how the garden came to be the Japanese garden at Sierra Madre School. Natalie Sandoval is slated to talk about school days at Sierra Madre in the 1990s, the subsequent rediscovery of the Japanese garden and how the students got into restoring the lost treasure that was destroyed as a result of bigotry and hatred of Japanese Americans post Pearl Harbor. Helen Pontarelli will discuss how the garden has become an unexpected, emergent curriculum at the school and fundraising parent, Linda Sandoval, digs in with how the kids in the school help raise funds for the garden’s upkeep. And of course, no event at the Goodwill Garden would be complete without Lew Watanabe. Lew Watanabe is one of those rare individuals who has volunteered his own time, money and expertise in restoring and expanding the garden along with a help from his friends in Sierra Madre and community support over the years. A couple Middle School Service Club Students will also share about work on the garden and future plans. The original Japanese garden was built in 1931 by the parents of Japanese American students. The carefully constructed and peaceful garden vandalized and completely destroyed by adults who over-reacted to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The sixth grade class of 1995 read about Sierra Madre’s history and discovered an article in the Los Angeles Times documenting a garden at their school. Upon reading this, the students decided to restore it, undertook a massive fundraising and labor
effort to do just that. The students held car washes, bake sales, wrote letters, and sold origami cranes among other things to fund the reconstruction. They also performed the physical labor digging the bridge out of the mud and excavated the garden. Enter Japanese-American community member, Lew Watanabe. Lew became a central figure for the ambitious project. As a landscape gardener and unique Watanabe designed the new garden and led the reconstruction. Through sales and donations, students were able to raise enough money to rebuild the garden. On Sunday, February 4, 1995, the Japanese Garden was officially dedicated. The ceremony included 17 members of the class of 1931 and their teacher. The dedication ceremony included Taiko drumming, dancing, and a karate demonstrations. The garden was named – Garden of Goodwill. In Sierra Madre there is a unique volunteer spirit, perhaps quite unlike any other city. Kids and parents put together a massive volunteer effort to keep the garden clean and on Veterans Day last year and learned what happened to Japanese Americans after the attack on Pearl Harbor – also what became of many of those who were sent to internment camps as a direct result of the military action. Japanese-American internment was the move and internment by the United States government in 1942 of about 110,000 Japanese Americans and Japanese who lived along the Pacific coast of the United States to camps called “War Relocation Camps,” in the wake of Imperial Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. The internment of Japanese Americans was applied unequally throughout the United States. Japanese Americans who lived on the West Coast of the United States were all interned, while in Hawaii, where more than 150,000 Japanese Americans composed over one-third of
the territory’s population, 1,200 to 1,800 Japanese Americans were interned. Of those interned, 62% were American citizens. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt(FDR) authorized the internment with Executive Order 9066, issued February 19, 1942, which allowed local military commanders to designate “military areas” as “exclusion zones,” from which “any or all persons may be excluded.” This power was used to declare that all people of Japanese ancestry were excluded from the entire Pacific coast, including all of California and most of Oregon and Washington, except for those in internment camps. In 1988, Congress passed and President Ronald Reagan signed legislation which apologized for the internment on behalf of the U.S. government. The legislation said that government actions were based on “race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership”. The U.S. government eventually disbursed more than $1.6 billion in reparations to Japanese Americans who had been interned and their heirs. The lesson learned is that of tolerance and how things like prejudice can overwhelm a nation. The similarity of the anti-Muslim racism today is not lost on these young minds. Teachers such as Helen Pontarelli are helping the students realize that tolerance of our differences is critical and compromise is the only solution to such matters. The Upper Campus Service Club (which tends to the gardens) was started about five years ago by a parent who wanted the new middle school (currently under construction) to have some of the same opportunities as established middle schools in the Pasadena Unified School district – the current project of the service club is the care and maintenance one of Sierra Madre’s true historic monuments. The event will be held this Saturday, March 19 at Sierra Madre School from 1-3

They are all very involved in their community and had spent some time researching issues which concerned them. Not to be outdone by the Rose Parade’s Never on a Sunday policy – the good folks at LightBringer Project plan to hold the Doo Dah Queen Tryouts on April 2, instead of the traditional and albeit occasional, April 1. The wonderfully creative and deliciously delightfully duo of Tom Coston and Patty Hurley – the brilliant masterminds behind the Doo Dah Parade, et al – have – off the record – adopted a “Never on a Friday” policy for their annual Doo Dah Queen Tryouts. The policy will last at least 365 days, according to a spokesperson who wikileaked the news to Beacon Media on the promise of anonymity. Citing respect of those who observe the time-honored Friday night post-work happy hour gatherings and subsequent rendezvous at various speakeasies, the management of LightBringer thought that by choosing Saturday afternoon it might be more respectful for those suffering from the inevitable “mal a la tete.” It might also, perhaps, give contestants an extra day to think of what they might or might not want to reveal to the judges. The list of judges at the annual Doo Dah Queen tryouts reads like something from a veritable Who’s
Who of Pasadena’s elite to those with some extremely stinky feet. Businessmen and, former Queens and even a flatfoot to infamous radio personalities and a few wannabe movie stars thrown in for good measure will ultimately decide who will wear the coveted Doo Dah Crown. Rumours of Charlie Sheen being one of the contestants this year are “grossly inaccurate” by Sheen’s publicist, Dr. Jeremy Jekyl. However, his publicist did add that the chance that Sheen might be a judge is “not out of the question” as the stipend offered by Lightbringer for his services would “significantly help Sheen’s bottom line. The object of the Doo Dah tryout exercise on April 2, is to select, “fairly democratically” and as outrageously as possible, the person (or persons) who best represent the spirit of Doo Dah- whatever that is – and who will also perform official duties which might, or might not include such duties as ship launchings,, ribbon cuttings and pressed suit conferences throughout her (his) rein as Queen. For those of you who may not know of the Doo Dah Parade and pre-events such as the Queen Tryouts, you are most certainly missing out on a Pasadena tradi-
tion that has been handed down through the generations – a deeply moving experience for anyone who has even a grain of humility. Where else can you experience extraordinary live music by Snotty Scotty and the Hankies, Horses on Astroturf; be intoxicated by Naughty Mickie’s Belly and Sword dance and have some really cheap drink and food to boot while witnessing history? Where else can you find a man resembling Uncle Fester with a light bulb in his mouth while a cup full of dry ice emitting from his head? Perhaps only at a Doo Dah Queen tryout will you experience Erica Valentine’s amazing Fender Stratocaster playing. Perhaps Count Smokula is more up your alley with his eternal bid for the coveted title. Colorful costumes, perennial belly dancers and busts of all shapes and sizes appear on stage hoping to grab the judges attention but when it comes down to the final analysis, it is the talent that wins over most judges – “Yeah, right!…It’s all about the skin, baby. The more you show, the better your odds”, said one former judge who spoke with Beacon via a pay phone but refused to identify herself for this report. A couple of years ago one of my personal favorite acts, the highly seductive serpent twins, won the greatly sort after title of Doo Dah Queen(s) – This year, who knows. It could be you! USGS updates magnitude of Japan’s 2011 Tohoku earthquake to 9.0 The USGS has updated the magnitude of the March 11, 2011, Tohoku earthquake in northern Honshu, Japan, to 9.0 from the previous estimate of 8.9. Independently, Japanese seismologists have also updated their estimate of the earthquake’s magnitude to 9.0. This magnitude places the earthquake as the fourth largest in the world since 1900 and the largest in Japan since mod-
ern instrumental recordings began 130 years ago. The USGS often updates an earthquake’s magnitude following the event. Updates occur as more data become available and more time-intensive analysis is performed. There are many methods of calculating the energy release and magnitude of an earthquake. Some methods give approximate values within minutes of the earthquake, and oth-
ers require more complete data sets and extensive analysis. Due to inherent uncertainties in the modeling of energy and magnitude, the results from different agencies often vary slightly. It was only then that we understood of the devastation the earthquake and the subsequent tsunamis took on the country. It was hard to believe that while the sun shined and snow glistened outside that in the same country people were in the midst of evacuating while their homes were being shook and towns being washed away. It is only after I arrived home in Osaka and saw the news footage as to how the disaster unfolded. It is indeed scary. In some videos, I could see cars that were still moving on the roads and people still
standing hopelessly as the waves washed them away. And now with latest news about more tsunamis, hearing of the numerous aftershocks and power outages in the Tokyo area, the limited resources that people in the badly effected areas have, and imagining how much more the death toll will rise, it is clear that this is no longer an issue of Japan but an issue truly on a global scale. It is growing more apparent of the need to protect our planet, because we live here, and here we dwell with our daily tragedies. And with these tragedies comes the time to stand together as one people; as a world; that we pray for Japan and those who are affected by the disaster.

Nuclear Radiation from Japan Presents no Danger to Pasadena There has been concern about radiation exposure from Japan’s power plant possibly reaching the mainland U.S., including the greater Pasadena area. According to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Japan’s nuclear emergency currently presents no danger to California. The Pasadena Public Health Department is advising against taking potassium iodide (KI) as a precaution against possible radiation exposure. Taking potassium Iodide tablets is not an effective precautionary measure. “We are taking this matter seriously. Taking Potassium Iodide tablets can present a danger to people with allergies to iodine and shellfish or who have thyroid problems,” said Dr. Eric Walsh, Pasadena’s public health officer. “California has a plan for responding to radiological emergencies, and this plan is coordinated locally with all public health departments for rapid response.” Walsh added that the Pasadena Public Health Department expresses condo-
lences to the victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The department, along with its state and federal partners, is monitoring the situation closely and will implement any necessary steps to protect the public’s health if the situation changes. The Pasadena Symphony's next-to-last concert of the 2010-2011 season last Saturday demonstrated the wisdom of the orchestra's move from the somber acoustics of the Pasadena Civic Auditorium to the bright—and exacting—sound that its current home at Ambassador Auditorium produces. Led by guest conductor George Stelluto in a program of the music of Felix Mendelssohn, Ludwig Van Beethoven and a very special performance of little known Armenian composer Khachatur Avetisyan by soloist Karine Hovhannisyan playing a Middle East instrument, the kanun, the afternoon (I attended the 2:00 p.m. concert) turned out to be a pleasant romp of upbeat music. Near euphoria surrounds the mystique of the Ambassador Auditorium's sound qualities and in Stelluto's hands and the Pasadena Symphony musicians, those qualities proved to be exceptional. Lush strings with crisp and sturdy playing underscored both the Mendelssohn excerpts from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and the concert's closing work, Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. In the Mendelssohn, the orchestra displayed amazing power in a filigreed reading marred only by miscues among the winds but which were quickly remedied. In the performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, Stelluto drew clear defined playing in the third movement, the Presto, and speeded the fourth move-
ment, the Allegro con brio, at a breathtaking pace to exhilarating effect. The centerpiece of the concert was Hovhannisyan's performance on the Armenian kanun which was offered before intermission. The kanun is an instrument with ancient antecedents perhaps as early as the 12th-century. It is described as zither-like, strung with 72 (usually) nylon or PVC strings, set on the lap and played with two plectra attached to the forefinger of each hand. The work performed, Avetisyan's Concerto No. 2, was written in 1987, one of several works he composed to showcase the kanun. Hovhannisyan provided ample evidence that
she is expert in the instrument as her hands moved swiftly, plucking the strings and trimming the musical keys with the levers along the side of the trapezoidal-shaped instrument. Avetisyan's orchestral accompaniment contained modern influences of both film music (Mancini's TV work came to mind) and Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian whose music is said to have influenced Avetisyan. The banjo-like sound the instrument produced worked well in the three-movements of the 11song work presented here. Displayed were moods as varied as sorrow, contemplation and drive. It was altogether colorful. Stelluto 's conducting
style is somewhat off-putting. He conducts without baton, leading to swinging arms and body. His exaggerated body movements are instructive as to the mood he is seeking (for the audience, not the musicians) but I found it distracting. Still, the results were wonderful. Stelluto achieved some of the most alert playing of the Pasadena Symphony yet heard. The Pasadena Symphony and Pops' final concert in the Symphony Classic Series is Saturday, May 7 with guest conductor Maximano Valdés and pianist Chu-Fang Huang. The Pops summer series follows beginning June 18 at the lawn adjacent to the Rose Bowl.

Monrovia Rotary Celebrates Youth BY SUSAN MOTANDER
At their usual Tuesday meeting, the Monrovia Rotary Club recognized two very different groups of outstanding young people. During the preceding several weeks, the club had held their annual George R. Hensel Essay Contest with the top three essays being read by civic leaders. The Rotarians also honored the winners of the Wildrose Elementary School Invention Convention. The essay competition winners were read in reverse order of their standing with the third place essay read by the high school counselor who had helped organize it. The second place essay focused on an ethical situation the writer faced and failed. It also discussed the lessons learned from that experience. The essay was read by Judge Bruce Marrs who is a mem-
ber of the Arcadia Rotary Club. The final essay was read by Monrovia Mayor and Rotarian Mary Ann Lutz. It’s theme was the two people who most influenced the author: her father and Nelson Mandela. The writer of the first place essay received a local award of $250 and is eligible for a $3000 scholarship if she wins the district competition. She is Gisselle Moreau whose father first heard the essay as the Mayor read it, telling him he was major influence in his daughter’s life. The second place which came with a $100 award was won by Amy Siegal. Erica Flores won $50 with her third place essay. All three also received plaques from Shaffer awards courtesy of club member Andy Montgomery. The Rotary Club also applauded the efforts of six elementary school inventors. Each year for the last three, Wildrose has held an Invention Convention with prizes going to the best ideas. This year, the 2nd
place invention was wheelchair stabilizer featuring a backup of a roll bar in case of emergencies. Benjamin Tang was limited to spending only $20 on his invention and so presented only a miniature model of his prototype. Two teams tied for first place in the competition. Two young women, Maya Taylor and Caroline Mulvihill, created a Clipboard Organizer which combined a standard clipboard with a sort of pencil box mounted on a larger board to keep everything together and prepared to move the user and his or her tools to a convenient location. Tied with them was team of three young men who created a hat fan which can attach to any baseball style cap. Gregory Calva, Francisco Don Diego Jr., and Roberto Orozco reported that they stayed under the $20 limit by doing most of their shopping at the 99¢ Store. The Rotarian was impressed with the future of all of these young people and of Monrovia itself.

For the period of Sunday, March 6, through Saturday, March 12, the Police Department responded to 980 calls for service of which 116 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period. Sunday, March 6: Around 2:19 a.m., a traffic stop was conducted at Live Oak and Fourth when a vehicle was observed traveling over the center divider. An intoxicated 29-yearold male Hispanic driver was arrested for DUI. Loss prevention personnel from Macy’s advised that they had detained a woman for theft around 3:13 p.m. The suspect entered the store with two handbags and filled them with merchandise while in a fitting room. She also switched a $127 price tag on a sweater with a $12 tag and paid for the item. She then exited the store where she was contacted by loss prevention employees. A private person’s arrest was made, and a 51-year-old Asian was taken into custody for petty theft and over $600 in stolen merchandise was recovered. Monday, March 7: Units were dispatched to the 2500 block of South Fourth around 8:46 a.m. in reference to a forged check report. A check was mailed by a business to an insurance company, and it was later discovered that the check had been altered with a different payee name and amount. Shortly before 1:00 p.m., a victim came to the station to file a fraud report. On March 2, a bank representative contacted the victim and asked about some unusual transactions in the City of Westlake. The victim went online and confirmed that unknown suspect(s) had used his credit card account information to make unauthorized charges in Oxnard, Ventura, and Westlake. Tuesday, March 8: An attempted robbery occurred at Advantis, 1041 South Baldwin,
around 10:50 a.m. Two male African-American suspects, armed with replica black semi-automatic handguns, entered the store and pointed the guns at the victim. The suspects told the victim to kneel on the ground and then pulled out zip ties. Fearing that he was going to be shot after being tied, the victim grabbed one of the suspect’s guns and used it to hit the suspect multiple times in the face. The second suspect then used his gun to pistol whip the victim on the back of his head. The suspects fled the scene on foot, but they were later apprehended in the 700 block of Arcadia. The juvenile suspects, ages 15 and 16, were taken into custody for attempted robbery, commercial burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, conspiracy to commit crime, and drawing/exhibiting imitating firearm. After being booked at the City jail, they were transported to Eastlake Juvenile Detention Center. Around 1:22 p.m., a vehicle was observed traveling 79 mph in a 25 mph school zone, and the car subsequently rearended another vehicle at Holly and Duarte. A 19-year-old male Hispanic driver was arrested for reckless driving, excessive speed, no proof of insurance, and driver’s license not in possession. Wednesday, March 9: Between 3:30 p.m. to 6:43 p.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 1400 block of Orlando. Unknown suspect(s) entered the home by pushing out a window that was in a laundry room door. The suspect(s) then ransacked rooms and stole jewelry, a laptop computer, and a digital camera. A 2001 white Toyota Tacoma was stolen from the 1800 block of Oakwood around 10:10 p.m. The victim actually saw the vehicle being driven away by the suspect. Officers conducted an area check, but the vehicle was not found. Thursday, March 10: Units were dispatched to the 400 block of Arborlada around 8:46 a.m. regarding a residen-
tial burglary in progress. Two male suspects were seen trying to enter house through a bedroom window. While the residents were calling the police, the suspects left the location in a vehicle driven by a third suspect. Sierra Madre Police stopped the suspect vehicle at Santa Anita and the 210 Freeway, and three African-American suspects, two 25-year-olds and a 29-year-old, were arrested for residential burglary, and possession of burglary tools. Two of the suspects were also charged with felony parole violations. Shortly after 10:00 a.m., APD officers assisted parole officers from the California Department of Corrections in the 800 block of West Duarte. During a parolee detention, it was discovered that the subjects were in possession of a large amount of marijuana for the purpose of sales. A 27-year-old male Asian was arrested for possession of marijuana for sale, felon/addict in possession of firearm, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, outstanding felony warrant, and receiving stolen property. Two female Asians, ages 25 and 29, were also taken into custody for possession of marijuana for sale. Friday, March 11: Around 1:51 a.m., a traffic stop was initiated at Baldwin and Huntington for a code violation. Officers detected the odor of alcohol from the vehicle and a field sobriety test was conducted on a 21-year-old female Hispanic driver. It was determined that she was operating the vehicle while intoxicated and was arrested for DUI. A traffic stop on a vehicle for an equipment violation was conducted at Santa Anita and Orange Grove around 1:00 p.m. Record checks of the two occupants revealed that the driver was on parole for burglary and a 53-year-old male Hispanic passenger had 2 outstanding warrants and was also in possession hypodermic needles. The passenger was arrested at the scene without incident.

POLICE BLOTTERS Saturday, March 12: Around 3:52 p.m., a victim came to the station to report a fraud. A possible suspect, who worked at a loan company, had access to the victim’s personal and financial information. The suspect then used that information to make 10 unauthorized transactions from the victim’s checking account for a loss of over $1,600. Shortly before 5:00 p.m., units responded to the 1000 block of Don Pablo regarding an attempted suicide. A 72-year-old man locked himself inside his bedroom and consumed a large amount of prescription medication. A suicide note was found at the scene, and the man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and psychological evaluation.
10th: 8:58 AM- Outside Agency Assist, San Carlos/Orange Grove Ave. A Sierra Madre officer heard a broadcast from Arcadia Police Department regarding a burglary in progress on Arbolada Drive, just south of the southern border of Sierra Madre. The officer checked the area and noticed a suspicious white Ford Taurus with tinted windows. The officer stopped the car and saw that one of the passengers matched the description of the burglary suspects. Arca-
Further investigation revealed that the suspect had a false 2011 registration tab attached to the rear plate. The officer arrested the Monrovia resident for false evidence of registration, possession of stolen property and petty theft with prior convictions. The officer booked the suspect at the Century Regional Detention Facility.

This investigation involves the unauthorized use of the victim’s debit/credit cards at various locations outside Sierra Madre. Thursday, March

highlighted issues and events: Burglary-Suspect Arrested On March 3 at 2:30 p.m., an officer responded to a business in the 500 block of West Huntington regarding a suspect who had stolen merchandise and returned the items for store credit. The suspect exited the business and made his way to the corner of Huntington and Mayflower. He was detained by police and subsequently arrested for burglary. The suspect had a number of warrants, including one for burglary. Juvenile Weapons Offense - Suspects Arrested On March 3 at 8:04 p.m., a business in the 700 block of East Huntington reported two male juveniles left the location and had possibly taken alcohol with-
out paying for it. A loss prevention employee had followed the juveniles and gave their location. An officer responded and detained the juveniles. During a cursory search, a broadtip marker was discovered on one of the subjects and a knife was found on the other subject. It was determined that he was already on probation for a weapons offense. Both subjects were determined to be gang associates from Duarte. The juveniles were arrested for the offenses, cited, and later released to their parents.
Grand Theft Auto Recovery On March 4 at 11:33 a.m., a Deputy Public Conservator from Adult Protection came in to report a stolen vehicle from a protected person that lives in the 1300 block of Orange. The vehicle was entered into the stolen vehicle system and later located near the corner of East Los Angeles and Sherman. Shooting at an Inhabited Dwelling On March 4 at 6:46 p.m., dispatch received a call of shots fired and a vehicle racing away from the area of Canyon and Colorado. Officers responded and set up a crime scene after
confirming that shots had been fired. No victims were located. The suspects were driving a dark black or charcoal, four-door vehicle with a sun roof. The exact make and model are not known, but may possibly be a Nissan Altima or similar vehicle. The suspects were not located. Vehicle Pursuit One Suspect Arrested On March 7 at 7:08 p.m., a suspicious vehicle was reported parked in the 1300 block of South California. The vehicle was gone when officers arrived. A short time later, the vehicle returned. An officer in the area observed the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to yield and slowly drove around the block. As it turned north onto California from Los Angeles, the vehicle accelerated, and the officer advised he was in pursuit. As the vehicle attempted to turn east onto Huntington, it collided with another car, and then became stuck on the center divider. The driver and both passengers fled on foot. The male driver was arrested a short distance from the vehicle. The two passengers, a male and a
female, were not located. There were no injuries and only minor damage. Burglary tools were found in the suspect’s vehicle. Investigation continuing. Hit and Run Traffic Collision / Driving Under the Influence On March 8 at 1:21 a.m., witnesses reported a hit and run collision in the 700 block of South Ivy. The suspect struck a parked vehicle and fled the scene. An officer located the suspect driving at Hillcrest and Fifth. The driver admitted to the collision and was determined to be driving under the influence. He was arrested. Possession of a Controlled Substance On March 8 at 6:30 p.m., officers responded to a business in the 500 block of West Huntington regarding a possible theft investigation involving a female suspect refusing to cooperate with security. When officers arrived, they located the female suspect on Huntington and detained her. Officers determined the female to be under the influence of a controlled substance and found her to be in possession of methamphetamine and vicodin. She was arrested and taken into custody.

to Matt Denny’s provided the expert talent of hairstylists including Cathy Carter ( whose husband George Carter from the Pasadena Lion’s Club, is the founding member of Arcadia’s St. Baldricks nine years ago.) The Arcadia Firefighters’ Association took the children from City of Hope and beacme honorary firefighters for a day and gave as they rode to Matt Denny’s in a fire engine. Affording the children the opportunity shave firefighters’ heads in solidarity gives enormous encouragement and inspiration as they battle their particular cancer. It was this image that truly brought some of the biggest smiles we’ve ever seen. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises money and awareness globally for childhood cancer research. We will be shaving our heads in front of cheering supporters to experience for ourselves and to encourage the kids through one of the most stigmatiz-
ing public aspects of childhood cancer- losing one’s hair from chemotherapy treatment. Last year, the event collected over $53,000 towards pediatric cancer research.

Matt McSweeny has been a consistent partner with St Baldrick’s having the event at his restaurant/ pub every year without fail. Mc Sweeny said it is a real “community builder” giving people in all walks of life a chance to get to know one another in a fun, friendly environment and at the same time raising a tremendous amount of cash for research. Over 78% of monies raised at St. Baldrick’s goes directly into research. 19% goes back into fundraising and only % for administrative expenses.
