Chu Pushes Lights, Cameras, Parades...It’s Holiday Time for DREAM Act Vote Calls on leadership to bring up immigration measure during lame-duck session Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., today urged Speaker Nancy Pelosi to schedule a vote on immigration legislation that would jumpstart the economy and bolster national security. For the past week, Chu has helped gather the votes necessary to pass The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act by the end of the year. The bill makes it possible for as many as 2.1 million young undocumented immigrants nationwide, roughly 26% of whom live in California, to earn the chance to become productive, taxpaying American citizens.

Miracle in Monrovia How Turkeys Saved the Day BY SUSAN MOTANDER The phrase “Holiday Miracle” conjures up images of snow fall just in time for Christmas, or the supposedly “lost” father returning from war, or a last minute rescue of Christmas by an adorable, but damaged child. Just watch television specials this time of year; the stories are unbelievable. But some people believe in miracles. Joan Whitenack, executive director of the Foothill Unity Center believes in miracles. For her they are not symbolized by snow or soldiers or cherubic kiddies.

On November 5, 2010 at about 6:50 pm, a 17 year old young man from Arcadia was lured into a physical altercation by a lone suspect, at a business located in the 1000 block of South Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia. The fight moved outside the business toward the parking lot when the suspect was joined by three additional suspects who attacked the victim. The suspects struck, kicked, beat the victim with a pipe-like object, and during the attack, the victim was stabbed twice in the torso. The suspects fled and were not apprehended. The victim was hospitalized and is recovering from his injuries. Over the course of the next few weeks, Arcadia Detectives conducted follow-up investigation and

BY DOROTHY DENNE Ho, Ho, Ho. ‘Tis the season to be jolly. Anytime is a good time to be jolly but I’m talking round jolly. You know, like Santa round and jolly as in “round little belly that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly”. ‘Tis the season for will power. I have lots of it. I’m constantly saying, “Yes, thank you, I will” to a bite of this, a bite of that, or perhaps a sliver, a slice, or a slab. Oh my, it’s all so good. My birthday was the Sunday before Thanksgiving. I went to my heartson’s for dinner and I was pretty righteous. Well, not perfect but pretty righteous. I knew the holidays were upon us.

one who offers us a homemade Christmas cookie or some fudge or an egg nog? That’s why we only promise ourselves. No one else needs to know we are breaking a promise and oh my, they are all so good. Modern times have brought us many good things. The return of stylish flat-heeled shoes is one. Tossing out the requirements for corsets and girdles is another. And, of course, we have elasticized waists. Oh my. They are good. So dear readers, if you are fortunate enough to have a reason for good laughs and an excuse for good food, I say go for it. Personally I’m determined to laugh at everything I can, eat anything I want, wear elastic waistbands and just shake like a bowl full of jelly. Who do you know that was ever more loved that Santa? Oh my. It is good.

Then came Thanksgiving. I went again to my heart-son’s for dinner. Generally, the more love the more food. I love my ‘family’ a lot. But, I had determination of steel. I was determined to take just a very small serving of each thing. I did. Then, I determined that I liked each thing so much that I might have a little more of everything. I did. Not necessarily a little, but definitely everything. Oh my. It was all so good. Here we are in December. It is the one month more than any other that we tend to eat our way through, from day one right through day thirty-one. Oh sure there are days here and there where we promise ourselves we won’t eat a thing so our new outfit will fit well on New Years Eve. Aren’t those the days we always run into some-

Peace ... that is something that is needed the world over as we face the turmoil of these most difficult times. However, that greeting “Peace to You and Yours” is a most touching and thoughtful feeling to start this wonderful Christmas Season with. But the thought is even “more” touching when you realize that it is being sent to you by the artist of the beautiful Christmas card shown above, Andrew Gunnin, age 16, who is a cancer patient with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. I thought to myself, how easy it is, in our busy daily lives, to unintentionally overlook the needs of the people around us. A child’s cancer illness can have a devastating

emotional and economic impact on the cancer patient as well as their family. Yet, here is Andrew Gunnin giving back to Cancer Research through his artistic talents. Yes,

that truly is “Kids helping Kids”, which is a very successful outreach program sponsored by the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation located Irving, California. PCRF has been

very successful in bringing encouragement and hope to recovering Child Cancer Patients for many years. The survival rate of children with cancer has improved over the past 25 years from 15% to 80% due to Children’s Cancer Research Foundations. The Irvine, California Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation is a most efficient research organization, as 80 cent of every dollar raised goes directly to research. During these tough economic times financial donations are seriously short and they need more help. Like young Andrew Gunnin giving through his artistic talents “Kids helping Kids” it is

InnerViews Taking a Shot at Keeping the Beast at Bay BY FRAN SYVERSON

I cringed when she gave me the shot. It didn’t really hurt—my reflexes had taken over again. I’m a big girl now, but even after decades of shots for one thing or another, I’d cringed reflexively. What a strange shot to be getting in my old age, I thought. Whooping cough—who’d have thought? With tetanus mixed in; I don’t know why. I should’ve asked, I guess. But whooping cough, once seemingly almost eradicated, is beginning to claim young babies again. And babies get it from their caretakers. So greatgrandmother that I am, I don’t want to be the one to give whooping cough to my precious little 6-monthold Owen. Hence, my shot, even if I did cringe. Think of all the maladies we’ve held at bay with immunization! Yet the diseases are always there, lurking in the background, awaiting their chance to reemerge. As long as the balances we’ve established in our civilized society remain, we feel safe. But let a

Continued from page 2 now your turn! ... They need “More Adults Helping Kids” by donating their Treasure to keep the marvelous cancer research success happening! Not long ago Scott Evans, Director of Development at PCRF sent me a poem that he had written that I would like to share with you. His poem describes the mission of PCRF. That of course their mission is to raise money for research but that they also do ... “MORE”: as the following exerts from his poem describes! They bring about ... More first smiles and more brilliant eyes; More faces to light up when you enter the room; More first steps

major calamity occur—how swiftly our complacency is swept away. On the heels of tsunamis, earthquakes, floods and fire come diseases, some as mundane as diarrhea, others as appalling as typhoid fever. Does H1N1 ring a bell? Within days, there was global concern, for with modern travel connecting us with great speed over great distances, we feel there is no place to hide. Wash your hands, yes, and wash them again, for as long is it takes to hum “happy birthday.” And get a shot—if it’s available and you are in the high-risk group. Go back a generation to polio. Where and how did anyone catch it? So mysterious was the seemingly random way it struck that all kinds of lore became attached to it. Close the public swimming pools! Don’t eat fruit that’s fallen onto the ground! Fear led us to all kinds of surmises and theories. Then came Jonas Salk and the beast was tamed. Here, at least. Such is not true in many other coun-

tries. “Other countries”? We say that as if it were of little consequence to us. Yet we are of one globe, one humanity. And even if we don’t really care about people in other countries, just remember how quickly the HIV-aids virus became of consequence to us. Go back one further: smallpox. Do you remember the exuberant publicity in the ‘80s when it was deemed that smallpox had been eradicated, the last case gone? Since it’s transmitted by contact with a smallpox patient, and there were no more patients, the disease was gone. So now it’s whooping cough, a thing of the past, or so it seemed. But we’ve already heard of more than one baby’s death. Waiting in the wings, pertussis (as it’s formally known) is on the rise. We have the means for keeping it at bay, so let’s take a shot at controlling it for all the little Owens of the world, starting, if need be, with the grandmothers. Even if, for a moment, we cringe reflexively!

The Good Life and more first falls; More early morning snuggling and More nights to lose sleep; More requests to sit

on your lap; More laughter at jokes you’ve told a hun-

dred times; and More joy for the children than anyone could hope for! Please get involved. Your donation will be greatly appreciated. You can also purchase Christmas cards and holiday note cards illustrated by many of the child cancer patients, to send to your friends during this holiday season. The Irvine California Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation can be reached at 800-3547273 if you desire more information. May God reign His Peace upon you and your family as we celebrate the birth of His Son Jesus through out this holy Christmas Season?

US Postal Serive Promises to Deliver in Time for Holidays Neither rain nor snow nor heat nor gloom of night will keep the Postal Service from doing what it does best — delivering the holidays. Between now and Christmas Eve, the Postal Service will deliver 15.8 billion cards, letters and packages across the country and around the world. “The holiday season isn’t just the busiest time of the year for the Postal Service — it’s our best time of year,” said Steve Forte, senior vice president, Operations. “We’re the holiday mailing and shipping experts.” The Postal Service expects to deliver nearly 3 billion cards and letters over the holidays and there are more than 3 billion holiday stamps available to handle the volume. This year, a snowman and the words “Happy Holidays” will appear in the upper right-hand corner of greeting cards and letters mailed during the month of De-

cember. During this holiday season, the Postal Service also expects: •97 million customers to visit a Post Office •30 million pounds of mail to be delivered to overseas military installations, including Iraq and war zones in Afghanistan •4.7 million shipping labels to be printed using Click-N-Ship The busiest mailing day is set for Monday, Dec. 20. More than 800 million cards, letters and packages are expected to be mailed on that day alone, compared to 559 million on a typical day. Wednesday, Dec. 22, will be the busiest delivery day. Staff at the National Operations Center work 24/7 to help navigate mail movement around the world. “We’ve been delivering the holidays for the past 235 years, and we’re proud to deliver excellent service to our customers,

especially during this busy time of year,” added Forte. More than 47 million customers will skip the trip to the Post Office this holiday season and take advantage of the Postal Service’s convenient online shipping at usps.com. Customers can print shipping labels, pay for postage and request free package pickup while staying warm and comfortable in their homes or offices. The Postal Service will deliver free shipping supplies, including the popular Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes, and also pick up packages for free when customers ship online using the Postal Service’s website. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. Arcadia Library to Celebrate Open Source Library Catalog The Arcadia Public Library will celebrate its grand opening of the new and first open source Library Catalog in Southern California beginning December 13. Here are some of the new features: •It’s simplicity! The new catalog offers simple, clear searching. •The Library can implement new features to better serve the public and improve work processes for the staff. •Suggestions for Library purchases are available right from the catalog. •Expanded searches are possible, with simple and clear instructions.

•Book reviews are available. •You can add items to a personal, private list. This could be used for keeping track of books you’ve read or want to read. •You can place your own comments or reviews for items in the catalog. •You can add tags (personally meaningful terms) to items. •You can set up an RSS feed so that you will be notified when new items arrive at the Library on your personal interests or by your favorite authors. •You can place all of your holds at one time…

fast, fast, fast! •You can receive notices by e-mail…and decide for yourself when you want to receive them! The Arcadia Public Library is very excited about implementing this new open source integrated library system (ILS). As technology continues to change, so does the Library. The Arcadia Public Library has had three different integrated library systems (ILS) over the past twenty years. The last migration was in 2002. Through a grant from the California State Library, the Arcadia Public Library is able to cover some of the

initial costs to change over to this new system. The Arcadia Public Library has contracted with ByWater Solutions for the migration, hosting and support of the Koha integrated library system. What is Koha? Koha is the first open-source integrated library system. Koha was originally developed in New Zealand by Katipo Communications Ltd. for Horowhenua Library Trust. It first went live in January, 2000. Koha is currently maintained by a team of software providers and library technology staff from around the world. There are over 1000

libraries running on Koha internationally. Why Koha and why now? The past two years have been financially tough for public libraries and Arcadia Public Library has been no exception. The Library was asked to hold the line on costs and/or reduce costs as much as feasible. Costs for the current ILS system continued to climb these past two years and we were unsuccessful in getting the current vendor to keep costs the same and/or to reduce them. The Library has been interested in an open source integrated library system for a couple

of years and when staff compared costs of the current ILS to an open source library system, Arcadia Public Library was very impressed with what was “free” with an open source package. This included the initial purchase, additional modules that were unattainable due to high costs before, upgrades, test environment license and more. It’s not completely free but it is a big savings from what is currently being paid out now. Check out the new Library Catalog in person or online beginning December 13!

County Library Tax Increase Proposed The Los Angeles Library Commission and County Librarian Margaret Donnellan Todd submitted a report asking the Board of Supervisors Tuesday to approve putting a Library Tax icrease on a ballot in 2011. Todd maintains that the Los Angeles County Library system is in dire need of assistance. The Board of Supervisors declined to take action on the request and instead chose to file the report for consideration. Library officials said they

did not know how much the tax would be, but said the proposed change would generate between $12 million and $23 million each year over the next decade. The report detailed possible solutions to the county library system’s estimated $22 million structural deficit over the n ext 10 years. The report said a $27.84 annual parcel passed in 1997 is already paid by owners of 407,000 parcels in unincorporated county areas and 11 cities, including El Monte, Duarte and La Canada Flintridge

That tax generates $11.3 million per year, or 10 percent of the library’s operating fees, according to the staff report. In Duarte, the parcel tax keeps the library open six days a week. Meanwhile libraries outside the assessment area are now open only four days per week. The County reduced its contributions to library services by $3.4 million from the 2008-09 fiscal year, to the 201011 period. The library system is also funded through property taxes.

Legendary Cunard Shipping Lines to have Inauguaral Float in Rose Parade Continued from page 1 was no need to adjust for time, unlike jet lag. My family immigrated to the United States in 1965 when my father was promoted to Foreign Correspondent for the London newspaper, The Daily Telegraph. We would be based in New York - Initially for a two-year assignment. While my father passed away a few years ago, my mother and sister and her family both still live in New York and my only brother and his family in North Carolina. How we were to get to New York from Southampton, England was in the hands of ship’s Captain G. T Marr, D.S.C., R.D,his excellent crew and Cunard’s quadruple-screw turbine, RMS Queen Mary. An experience I’ll never forget. Nor will any of my family members. RMS ( Royal Mail Ship) Queen Mary is a retired ocean liner that sailed the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for the Cunard Line (then CunardWhite Star when the vessel entered service). Built by John Brown and Company, Clydebank, Scotland, she was designed to be the first of Cunard’s planned twoship weekly express service from Southampton to Cherbourg to New York, in an-

Class. That being said we were extremely comfortable in our cabins and the pursers were excellent. Then there was the food. In a word – unforgettable! The chefs aboard the RMS Queen Mary were some of the finest in the world, without a shadow of a doubt. My brother and I had never seen such an incredible amount of food at one sitting. Being hungry pre-teens, we were in heaven! Needless to say when our Mum said it was time for tea or dinner, we were never tardy! When we weren’t eating we were swimming in one of the ship’s pools or exploring areas of the ship we perhaps weren’t really allowed to see… but snuck in anyway. the Rose Parade: Following the revelry of Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Naming Ceremony last month, Cunard Line continues A Grand Celebration by announcing its inaugural participation in the 122nd Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade® presented by Honda -created by award-winning Fiesta Parade Floats in collaboration with renowned artist and float designer Raul Rodriguez. Marking the first time Cunard has participated in the world-famous parade, “A Grand Celebration at Sea” will illustrate the Cunard fleet of Queens – flagship Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and the new Queen Elizabeth – and depict the ultimate sense of occasion, including ballroom dancing, a big band orchestra, champagne toasts, and multi generational families celebrating their dreams and friendships while building memories, all on board a luxury cruise vacation with Cunard. “We are delighted to be part of such a celebrated event like the Rose Parade,” said Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line. “This year’s Rose Parade theme of building dreams, friendships and memories, ties perfectly with our legacy and heritage. For more than 170 years sailing the seven seas, the Cunard name has been synonymous with fulfilling aspirations, fostering life-long friendships, and creating memorable experiences for all of our guests.” From bow to stern, Cunard’s float will be decorated in floral grandeur, reflecting the line’s classic ocean travel experience. The float will also depict signature hallmarks found

Cunard Sails into Pasadena January 1 on a Cunard liner, including the Grand Lobby staircase and the Queens Room Ballroom. Additionally, an oversized floralgraph of Cunard’s three Queens takes center stage at the top of the float’s ascending staircases, a fitting reference to the modern fleet and also to the upcoming Cunard Royal Rendezvous taking place on 13 January 2011 in New York Harbour. This rare maritime event will be only the second time in Cunard’s history that three regal Queens have docked together in New York Harbour. Featuring an eloquent fusion of floral and architectural detail in Cunard’s rich tradition of elegance and grandeur, the float stands at 24 feet high, 18 feet wide and 55 feet in length. It will include a big band orchestra and ballroom dancers to bring to life the Line’s famed Royal Nights Themed Balls, along with theatrical smoke rising from Cunard’s signature black and red funnel. Thousands of red Black Magic roses, purple phalaenopsis orchid sprays, green cymbidium orchids and hypericum, and white Casablanca lilies will border the length of the float, along with more than 45,000 red Opium roses that will carpet the steps and floors. Layers of black onion seed and

crisp white sweet rice will be used to adorn the distinctive shape of Cunard’s elongated bow, while shimmering deep brown flax seed will replicate the rich texture of hand-polished mahogany woods throughout the architectural features. Water waves showcased by white roses, dendrobium orchids and phalaenopsis orchids will sweep over oceans of

light and dark blue iris, delphinium and hydrangea blossoms. Raul Rodriguez, a third generation native of Los Angeles, is an artist and conceptual designer of international acclaim. He is considered the premier designer for the Rose Parade and has won more awards than any other designer in the history of the Rose parade.

DREAM Act Vote Continued from page 1 The DREAM Act is targeted toward undocumented young adults who were brought to America as children, have lived most of their lives in the US and have completed at least two years of military service or college studies. It was first introduced in 2001 and has been reintroduced during every session of Congress since then. Despite this, the House of

Representatives has never once brought the legislation up for a vote. “It’s long overdue to schedule a vote on the DREAM Act,” Chu said. “Every day that goes by without bringing the DREAM Act to the floor is not just a disappointment for millions of promising, law-abiding young Americans, it’s a setback for the future of our nation. This

bill strengthens our economy and bolsters national security. That’s why it’s supported across the military and business communities. “These are upstanding young men and women, whose parents and guardians brought them to this country. They didn’t have a choice in the matter and we need to stop punishing them for it. Across America, millions of gifted young students are ineligible for financial aid and, in some states, shut out of public colleges altogether just because they were born in a different country. Denying them a chance at citizenship is not just callous, it’s careless. “These students have already completed K-12 education in the United States. Rejecting this leg-

islation ensures that we’ll never get a full return on this already substantial investment. That’s why I’m calling on our leadership to schedule a vote on the DREAM Act as soon as possible, and why I’ll be working tirelessly to see it pass.” Congresswoman Judy Chu is a member of the House Immigration Subcommittee, a cosponsor of the DREAM Act and an original co-sponsor of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform ASAP Act (CIR-ASAP). Chu also sits on the Education and Labor, and Government Oversight Committees. A lifelong educator, Congresswoman Chu taught community college classes in Los Angeles and East Los Angeles for 20 years. She holds a

Ph.D. in psychology and a B.A. in mathematics. Rep. Adam Schiff has also expressed tentative approval of the DREAM act. The DREAM Act would allow students to practice the professions they study. A handful of supporters visited Schiff’s office Wednesday afternoon as part of a state-wide caravan to pressure and remind elected officials to vote in support of the DREAM Act before the Republicans take hold of Congress. The Immigration Policy Center estimates that 2.1 million people would benefit from the DREAM Act. It would offer high school graduates or equivalent, who have been in the country for at least five years and were younger than 16 when they first en-

tered the United States and attended college or joined the military a path to legalization. Immigration has always been a political hot potato and no more so than in this past election when Tea Party candidates like Tim Donnoly want to adopt a policy like Arizona. Even so called Blue Dog Democratic legislators are beginning to see the importance of the Dream Act and how it will positively affect our nation. This very nation is based on a melting pot of nationalities. Every year 65,000 undocumented immigrants graduate from high schools across the country.

Pasadena Woman In Need of Life-Saving Transplant With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant patients are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-needy patients. In Pasadena, volunteers are raising funds for transplant patients like local woman Samantha Dancer. Born on January 24, 1990, Samantha was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia, and doctors at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California recommended a life-saving bone marrow

transplant. An estimated $70,000 is being raised by Pasadena volunteers. Volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising activities. Individuals and groups interested in more information can contact Community Coordinator Tonita Fernandez at 626.524.5145 or Fernandez.Tonita@gmail.com. Donations may be made in person at any Wells Fargo Bank branch location using account number 6684748491 or mailed to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, 2501 West COTA Drive, Bloomington, Indiana, 47403. Checks or money orders should be made payable to COTA, with “In Honor of Saman-

Her grandparents are Bertha Fulmer and James Wright. Samantha’s family has asked for assistance from the Children’s Organ Transplant Association. The organization’s priority is to assure that no child or young adult is denied a transplant or excluded from a transplant waiting list due to lack of funds. One hundred percent of all funds raised are used for patients’ transplantrelated expenses.

Metrolink Receives $6.6 Million Federal Grant for Positive Train Control On Fri., Nov. 19, United States Secretary of Transportation Ray Lahood announced that Metrolink received a $6.6 million Federal Railroad Administration grant to help fund Positive Train Control (PTC) collision avoidance systems. The project will receive money through the new Railroad Safety Technology Grant program. PTC systems use Global Positioning System technology to monitor and control a train’s movements, in order to enforce speed limits, prevent train collisions and help keep railroad workers and passengers safe. In a press release, Secretary Lahood said, “This

new program will help keep the rails safer by accelerating installation of positive train control technology where it is needed most.” Six other projects will share the total $50 million in awards. Decisions on the competitively-awarded grants were based on technical merit, including the extent to which a project helps achieve interoperability between technologies and the recipient’s project management capabilities and financial commitment to share costs. “These funds are critical as we continue our mission to provide the safest rail service in the nation. Because we dispatch trains for all Southern California

rail operators, this award benefits the entire region’s transportation network,” said Metrolink Board Chairman Keith Millhouse. “Metrolink deeply appreciates the support and leadership from Senator Dianne Feinstein, Senator Barbara Boxer and the entire Southern California congressional delegation, including Congressman Henry Waxman, Congressman Adam Schiff and Congressman Elton Gallegly for creating the grant program and Congressman Brad Sherman for authoring a letter in support of Metrolink’s application. Southern California is a better place as a result of their commitment to safety.”

New Touches Embellish Enchanting “A Christmas Carol” Musical Now at Sierra Madre Playhouse BY FRAN SYVERSON It’s Christmastime from

BEACON MEDIA/WEST SIDE STORY 5.040” X 6.250” • B&W PUB DATE: 12/4/10

the moment you enter the Sierra Madre Playhouse. Carolers outside the Playhouse fill the air with familiar tunes. Garlands festoon the foyer, a faux living room corner graces the hall, and 1800-ish décor takes us back to an earlier era. ’Twas that era in which Charles Dickens lived and wrote what he called his “little Christmas book.” The book, of course, has survived these many generations, and never fails to evoke the Christmas spirit when we see it come to life on the stage. And come to life it does, in this year’s musical version of “A Christmas Carol.” Infusing the classic tale with a fresh edginess, director Christina Harris offers us a more sympathetic look at old Ebenezer Scrooge. His name has become synonymous with penuriousness. However, as we see some of the rejection and loneliness in young Ebenezer’s life, we may understand why he became the iconic “bah-humbug” man. But first we find Scrooge toiling at his desk and begrudging Bob Cratchit another coal in the stove to warm their office. Stuart James Galbraith brings his native accent to the role of Scrooge. And he carries well the mantle of Scrooge through his emotional ranges—from abrasive to frightened to pensive to ebullient, as he goes through the night with the ominous spirits who visit him. Each Christmas Spirit is eerie in its own way, and the accompanying music is a real mood-setter. Toni Smith is ghostly in a white gown with light-bulb auras as Christmas Past. Ron Schneider as Christmas Present wears a holly crown and a portentous green robe ample enough to hide the traditional two little imps beneath its folds. Matthew Herrmann is unrelenting as he reveals to Scrooge what may lie in his Christmas Future. Poor Bob Cratchit! Karl Maschek has the perfect deferential mien to portray him as the clerk. He also lights

the room with his warm smile when he is with his loving wife (Sarah Logan) and his flock of children, including everyone’s favorite, Tiny Tim. The youngster is played by Cody James Brown and Mark Challita on varying performances. Seth Margolies as a rollicking Fezziwig and his wife (Kady Douglas) bounce and bubble their way through a merry party entertaining friends. (On opening night, Christina Harris played Mrs. Fezziwig, along with her other duties as director, choreographer, and sound designer.) The cast comprises nearly three dozen people, and many of them play two or three characters. Moreover, some parts are played by different actors on different nights. Each is credited in the handsome program printed on softly colored holidaythemed paper. Even with program in hand, it isn’t easy to identify cast members. But that doesn’t keep the story from rolling on, and we all are familiar with it, so we can just sit back and enjoy it. Musical interludes of song and dance are interspersed as scenes unfold, each melody chosen to complement the action. Rich Dembowski is music director. Michelina Wright as “violinist estraordinaire” offers special musical touches. In addition to those mentioned elsewhere, the cast includes Allison Oliver, Annemarie Werthwein, Arianna Merkell, Clay Bunker, Erika Whalen, Georgia Miller, Grant Smith, Greta Storlie, Kari Irwin, Lindsey Beck, Matthew Bond, Meg Momsen, Paul Bond, Ranya Jaber, Sarah Gilman, Sean Peterson, Sophia Davis, Sophie Johnson, Steve Neumeier, Teddy Oldenbourg, Trey West, and Zayd Jaber. Ward Calaway is producer of “A Christmas Carol.” Kristen Cox is assistant director and lighting designer. Don Bergmann and David Calhoun designed the Victorian set that adapts as both an indoor and outdoor back-

ground. Ashley Jo Navarro is sound tech and also stage manager, with Erika Cepeda as her assistant. Maureen Davis is light tech. Liz Peterson as costume designer has provided (from Valentino’s Costumes) varied and appropriate garb for everyone, be they party-goers, townspeople, waifs, grave-robbers, or the Cratchit family. Anne Marie Atwan, Linda DeMetrick, and Mike Dessin handle the properties. Poster art design is by Rick Taylor, and photography by Donald Songster. Daniel Peixe is the artist, and Philip Sokoloff the publicist. Roberto Merkell handles backstage crew tasks. And a good many of the actors themselves are credited in the program as the construction crew. While “A Christmas Carol” is a charming play for families with children of all ages, it is also a delightful prelude to the holidays simply for people of all ages. For many, attending is a long-standing tradition. “A Christmas Carol” will continue at the Sierra Madre Playhouse through Thursday, Dec. 23, with extra weekday performances. Friday dates are Dec. 3, 10, & 17, and Saturdays Dec. 4, 11, & 18, all at 8 p.m. Shows on Sundays Dec. 5, 12, & 19 are matinees at 2:30 p.m., and Dec. 12 & 19 evenings at 7 p.m. During the final week, special performances will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 21, 22, & 23 at 8 p.m. All seats are $23 for “A Christmas Carol” except for groups of 12 or more at $20. The Sierra Madre Playhouse is located at 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre. City lots offer free parking. Pre- or post-theater dining at local restaurants on Baldwin Avenue and Sierra Madre Boulevard can enhance your theater-going experience. For ticket reservations or more information, phone (626) 355-4318, or visit the website, www.sierramadreplayhouse. org, for online ticketing.

Sierra Madre Playhouse Announces Planned 2011 Season The Sierra Madre Playhouse has assembled an outstanding array of shows for its main stage during the coming year. The schedule follows: Sylvia January 14 – February 19 Written by A. R. Gurney, Directed by Gita Donovan Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after sending their last child off to college. During a walk in the park Greg finds Sylvia, a bouncy lab poodle mix, who appears to understand his frustration with work and middle age. Kate, whose new job is full of opportunity and satisfaction, comes to feel that she is losing Greg to his adoring new best friend. This imaginative twist on Greg’s midlife crisis leads to laughter and some thoughtful insights into the nature of love, marriage, jealousy, and dogs. Our Town March 4 – April 16th Written by Thornton Wilder, Directed by Barbara

Schofield Our Town explores the lives of people living in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, a small quintessentially American town. In 1901 Grover’s Corners is the perfect picture of an American town before urbanization – automobiles are a novelty, everyone is up in each other’s business, and milk is still delivered fresh every morning. It is a timeless story of life that is still being played out. Our Town was first produced in 1938 and received the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. Cats Cradle April 29 – June 4 Written by Leslie Sands, Directed by Bill Mesnik The Fulton kidnapping of 12 years past was never solved, and Inspector Frost returns to the tiny English village to revisit the scene of his greatest frustration for one more go at it. But his reception is one of suspicion and hostility from the people he thought of as friends. A classic English manor house mystery.

Solid Gold Cadillac June 17 - July 30 Written by Howard Teichmann & George S. Kaufman, Directed by Bob Hakman This witty comedy looks at what happens when greed and corruption come face to face with innocent determination to uncover the truth. First produced in 1953, S.G.C. is still as pertinent today, as a cautionary tale of a corporate Goliath vs. a small David in the form of a timid woman committed to protecting her ten shares of stock. Judy Holliday starred in the very popular movie of the same name. To Be Announced August 19 - September 24 To Kill A Mockingbird October 7 - November 12 Written by Harper Lee, Directed by Michael Cooper To Kill A Mockingbird is a faithful reproduction of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel. She describes the play as “a love

Pasadena Pops Plans Holiday Music Extravaganza The whole symphony musical family gathers for a bright Christmas sing BY BILL PETERS I don’t know how the Pasadena Symphony people could have gathered a better group of musicians to celebrate our holiday season than what is planned for the 2nd annual Holiday Pops Concert by the Pasadena Pops Orchestra. The holiday concert is to be presented at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Music on the program will include “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, “The Polar Express”, and favorites “Jingle Bells”, “Silent Night” and “Sleigh Ride” conducted by guest conductor Grant Cooper. Actress Alison Sweeney will recite “T’was the night before Christmas” and she prom-

ises “Santa Claus is comin’ to town,” she said, enthused about the holidays and the upcoming program. Other artists participating in the holiday extravaganza with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra will be baritone Patrick Mason, the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and the Donald Brinegar Singers. Mason, a Professor of Voice at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a 2006 Grammy nominee, possesses persuasive credentials (that include collaborations with Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and George Crumb among others) and as far as we could learn, this will be his first Pasadena appearance. Conductor Cooper, likewise, seems new to the area. A native of New Zea-

land, Artistic Director and conductor at West Virginia Symphony Orchestra since 2001, the trumpeter (he was principal trumpet under Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa and Sir Neville Marriner) will lead the assembly of holiday celebrants both onstage and encourage the audience during a sing-along of tunes of the season. The balance of the talent has deep connections to Pasadena. Sweeney, actress, author, and TV host, is the daughter of a third-generation Pasadena family, her mother was a member of the Pasadena Symphony. She is known for her role of Sami Brady on “Days of Our Lives” and as TV host of “The Biggest Loser”. The Los Angeles Children’s Cho-

rus is Pasadena-based and director Anne Tomlin and her charges will be as comfortable on the Civic stage as they are at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl, and dozens of venues around the world. The Donald Brinegar Singers have brought their special sound to local stages since 1997. Brinegar serves as Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at Pasadena City College. He has worked with the King’s Singers, Henry Mancini, Barry Manilow and others. Ticket prices range from $8 to $45, kids age 14 and under, $10. The Pasadena Civic Auditorium is located at 300 E. Green St., Pasadena. Information: (626) 793-7172.

Murder Suspect Continued from page 1 developed information that led to the arrest of four individuals for this crime. Two adults, Andy Lieu, 18 years old from El Monte, and Jonah Moon, 18 years old from Norwalk, along with two 17 year old juveniles were booked at the Arcadia City Jail on attempted murder charges. The juveniles were from Alhambra and Cypress. Detectives believe that the attack was in retaliation for an altercation that took place earlier in the day in another local city and that

both incidents were gang related. All four suspects are believed to be members of a local Asian street gang. A felony complaint was filed on November 29, 2010 by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office with charges of attempted murder - PC 664/187(a) and criminal street gang enhancements on each of the four suspects. Lieu, Moon, and the two juveniles are being held on $1,000,000.00 bail at Los Angeles County facilities.

41st Annual Wine and Cuisine Tasting Event – Artist Selection Any good sports coach knows that to win, you not only have draft the right players, but also put these players in the right position – where the player is naturally talented. The Friends of the Sierra Madre Library Wine Tasting Chairpersons have been busy doing just that – getting the right players in place for their annual February event. De and Pat Alcorn are pleased to announce Djbril N’Doye as the poster artist for the Friend’s 41st Annual event. Djbril is an internationally recognized artist with work in galleries, homes and businesses throughout West Africa, the USA, Mexico, Cuba, Western Europe and Japan. “Djbril is a Sierra Madre resident, and has exhibited his work at our Friend’s Art Fair for several years “said Pat. “He’s graciously agreed to produce and donate his original art work for our Wine Tasting poster which you’ll soon see around town. And, you can purchase the piece at our silent auction” Pat added. Born 1953 into the Lebou Tribe in Senegal, West Africa, self-taught N’Doye considers his work to be “universal” art, his style of drawing inspired by sculptures in ebony. Previously working with standard materials such as oils and watercolor, after a half dozen years of experimentation and research, Djbril developed his own distinct technique using only ballpoint pen. Track Resurfacing On Schedule, Training Set To Open On New Santa Anita Dirt Track On Dec. 6 Santa Anita Park will welcome horses to its new, all-natural dirt main track on Monday, Dec. 6, as “The Great Race Place” will reopen for training in advance of its traditional opener on Dec. 26,. Santa Anita’s main track was comprised of synthetic material from September of 2007 through Oct. 11 when construction began on the new surface. “We’re elated to be able to welcome everyone back,” said Santa Anita President George Haines. “We’re ready to get back to business. We expect the stable area to begin filling up over the weekend and we’ll have horses back on the main track on Monday morning. “We’re not only offering our fans and horsemen a new track, but we’re also going to be offering huge purses, which will be for everyone’s benefit. We expect that our purses are

going to be 25 percent higher than they were a year ago and this should result in larger, more competitive fields which will provide better wagering opportunities.” Haines also said that although recent rains resulted in a few weather-related delays, the main track project has remained on schedule. “We’ll begin grooming the surface Wednesday and we’ll take the next five days to work with the material. With any project of this magnitude, there’s going to be some settling of the dirt and we’ll need to work with and monitor that. “I think everyone understands that as the track will change some in the

first week or so. We’ve asked the horsemen to take their time and jog their horses and let them get

necessary.” As a result of live racing being transferred to Hollywood Park this fall,

comfortable with it initially. It’s important that we open for training on Monday and that we have three weeks before opening day to make any adjustments, if

live racing at Santa Anita has been idle since April, the longest such extended period of time since 1968, which has created a tangible sense of anticipation. .

“Our Group Sales and all advance ticket sales are way up, compared to last year,” said Haines. “Our fans are anxious to come back and so are the horsemen. Santa Anita is regarded as America’s premier winter racing venue and it’s a very, very special place to many people. We can’t wait welcome everyone back on Dec. 26 and it’s going to be exciting to see the horses back on the track on Monday.” Santa Anita’s new main track, which consists of 90 percent sand and 10 percent clay, will be maintained by Track Superintendent Richard Tedesco. The track’s base and upper layers will have a depth of 15 to 17 inches.

Clockers’ Corner, the track’s popular breakfast area at the top of the stretch, also will be open to the public beginning on Monday, from 4:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Admission to and parking at Clockers’ Corner is free of charge and fans will be treated to a wide variety of breakfast favorites. Santa Anita’s popular Seabiscuit Stable Area Tram Tours, which emanate at Clockers’ Corner, will be available beginning Saturday, Dec. 11, and will be offered free of charge each weekend morning at both 8:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. For advance ticket sales and reservations, fans are encouraged to visit www.santaanitaevents. wagticketing.com. Obituaries Charles (Michy) Nomura 1915 - 2010

Charles ( Michy) Nomura, 95, passed away peacefully November 25, 2010 at his home in Pasadena. Born in Arcadia on May 19, 1915, Michy Nomura lived most of his life in Southern California. He worked until he was eightyfive, mostly for Wianko Engineering and DB Products, Pasadena aerospace electronics firms. After Pearl Harbor, Charles Nomura was interned with thousands of other Japanese Americans under FDR’s orders. He was interned at Gila, Arizona, which was a 15,000acre Relocation Center, situated on land leased from the Pima Indian Agency. He also spent time at the Hinsdale, Illinois, where he and his family lived with and worked for the Henry Rignery family. Since 1945 Charles Nomura has lived in Pasadena. Aside from the love of his life, Taka, Michy also passionately enjoyed fishing, gardening and woodcarv-

ing. One of his many talents was creating tiny monarch butterfly pins from tiny cuts of wood he hand-carved and painted. The completed butterfly pins were given as gifts.orrected Charles (Michy) Nomura was pre-deceased by grandson Neal Naito. He is survived by his wife Taka; daughter, Chris Naito; son, Stephen Nomura and his wife, Ginger; brother Sho and his wife Florence; sister Helen and her husband Ray Obazawa; granddaughters Nicki and husband Gene Lew, and Anna Nomura; and great-grandsons Kevin and Gregory Lew. He is also survived by a great many nieces, nephews and other relatives in the United States as well as Japan. A celebration of his extraordinary life will be held on Saturday December 18th at 1:30 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Altadena, 2776 Lincoln Avenue, Pasadena. Call (626)7914271 for more details.

Charles G. “Chuck” Souder, 69

Former Marine and Temple City Councilman Chuck Souder passed away Thanksgiving Eve after a brief illness. Chuck Souder served on the council for nine years and was Mayor for two terms. Souder also had served on the city’s Planning Commission for four years and as president of the city’s Sister Cities Commission, and chairman of Camellia Festival planning committing. He was also very active with the Kiwanis Club as well, in 2009 he was the President. Souder was known as Temple City’s Santa Claus because of his long white beard. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958 to 1965. There will be a private service for Chuck this Saturday from 4-8 p.m. in Long Beach. The city will have a memorial service for Chuck but it will be after the first of the year. Some of the reactions from Temple City officials and residents follow: “Chuck’s life of service is an inspiration to challenge

ourselves to work for the good of others. His gentle spirit will live on in the hearts of many! You will be missed my friend” Cynthia Sternquist, City Councilmember “Chuck Souder was a true gentleman who earned the trust of the community he served. When you saw Chuck, you never thought of him as your Councilman, you saw him as your friend and neighbor. Chuck Souder put himself into the community, it is where he worked best and is why he was the face of Temple City. Chuck will be missed but forever remembered by a community that loved him.” - Mark Ferrari, former resident of Temple City, 1960-2000 and served as a Commissioner for the Parks and Recreation Commission. “My favorite memory of Chuck was about thirteen years ago. My 4 year old granddaughter was visiting from Phoenix. She was so worried that Santa would not find her so far away from home. Chuck pulled in our driveway just when we were walking up to his house to deliver a Christmas gift. There he was in a red shirt (he always wore one from Dec 1st on), in his dark red El Camino. Her little mouth dropped open and he played along without missing a beat! It was a priceless moment.”

- Laura-Jean , A long time neighbor of Chuck when he lived on Live Oak Ave. “Concerts in the park without Chuck are going to be lonely. No one to joke around with. He will be missed by many.” - Esmeralda Nowak, Temple City Sister City/TC resident “I had the pleasure of working with Chuck Souder with Temple City Sister City Association. While he was president of the organization, I was his first vice-president. He was a remarkable man that stood up for what he believed in. I enjoyed talking with him at events with Sister City, at the concerts in the park, and when I would run into him within the city. He was a wise man who shared his wisdom with me. I will treasure his teasing, his laughter, and our chats about our families. Temple City has lost a legendary man. I will miss you Santa Claus!” Mitzi Franco “All I can say is we (the staff in the Parks and Recreation Dept.) will truly miss him. From the time he first became a Councilmember he made it a point to participate in all the City’s events. We all know that he was “Santa” during our holiday events (even before we started Lights on Temple City, he was Santa for our Dinner with Santa); but more than being Santa to hundreds of children (including my two), he also helped feed the Marine Corps band each year for our Independence Day Celebrations, he barbecued for City events, he was present for the Easter Egg Hunts, Halloween Carnivals, and all our other events. He felt it was so important for the Council

to be seen at the community events and to mingle with the residents. Both my children grew up knowing Chuck because he was at every event (as they were). As they got older (they are now 22 and 24) Chuck always asked how they were doing; if they were behaving, etc. When I told me daughter (22 years) that Chuck had passed away she said “No, my Santa can’t be gone.” I think that’s how most of us feel. For me personally, I started going to Council meetings when Chuck was on the Council. I always found Chuck to be a very strong, and respectful, Councilmember. Even if he disagreed with someone (including me) he was always polite and respectful in getting his point across. I will never forget the way he would look over his glasses at someone when they were starting to get on his nerves. That’s when I knew it was time to let something go . If there was ever anyone who embodied what Temple City is all about (a small town community where everyone knows everyone and helps out their neighbor; where most people do what’s good and right just because it’s the right thing to do; where people really care about each other and about their city) Chuck Souder was that person. Although he didn’t grow up in Temple City, and may not have lived in the City for as long as some other individuals, I don’t think you could find anyone who loved this City more than he did, or was willing to do more for the City and its residents, than he was.” - Cathy Burroughs
