Chu Pushes Lights, Cameras, Parades...It’s Holiday Time for DREAM Act Vote Calls on leadership to bring up immigration measure during lame-duck session Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., today urged Speaker Nancy Pelosi to schedule a vote on immigration legislation that would jumpstart the economy and bolster national security. For the past week, Chu has helped gather the votes necessary to pass The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act by the end of the year. The bill makes it possible for as many as 2.1 million young undocumented immigrants nationwide, roughly 26% of whom live in California, to earn the chance to become productive, taxpaying American citizens.

Miracle in Monrovia How Turkeys Saved the Day BY SUSAN MOTANDER The phrase “Holiday Miracle” conjures up images of snow fall just in time for Christmas, or the supposedly “lost” father returning from war, or a last minute rescue of Christmas by an adorable, but damaged child. Just watch television specials this time of year; the stories are unbelievable. But some people believe in miracles. Joan Whitenack, executive director of the Foothill Unity Center believes in miracles. For her they are not symbolized by snow or soldiers or cherubic kiddies.

On November 5, 2010 at about 6:50 pm, a 17 year old young man from Arcadia was lured into a physical altercation by a lone suspect, at a business located in the 1000 block of South Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia. The fight moved outside the business toward the parking lot when the suspect was joined by three additional suspects who attacked the victim. The suspects struck, kicked, beat the victim with a pipe-like object, and during the attack, the victim was stabbed twice in the torso. The suspects fled and were not apprehended. The victim was hospitalized and is recovering from his injuries. Over the course of the next few weeks, Arcadia Detectives conducted follow-up investigation and

BY DOROTHY DENNE Ho, Ho, Ho. ‘Tis the season to be jolly. Anytime is a good time to be jolly but I’m talking round jolly. You know, like Santa round and jolly as in “round little belly that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly”. ‘Tis the season for will power. I have lots of it. I’m constantly saying, “Yes, thank you, I will” to a bite of this, a bite of that, or perhaps a sliver, a slice, or a slab. Oh my, it’s all so good. My birthday was the Sunday before Thanksgiving. I went to my heartson’s for dinner and I was pretty righteous. Well, not perfect but pretty righteous. I knew the holidays were upon us.

Modern times have brought us many good things. The return of stylish flat-heeled shoes is one. Tossing out the requirements for corsets and girdles is another. And, of course, we have elasticized waists. Oh my. They are good. So dear readers, if you are fortunate enough to have a reason for good laughs and an excuse for good food, I say go for it. Personally I’m determined to laugh at everything I can, eat anything I want, wear elastic waistbands and just shake like a bowl full of jelly. Who do you know that was ever more loved that Santa? Oh my. It is good.

Then came Thanksgiving. I went again to my heart-son’s for dinner. Generally, the more love the more food. I love my ‘family’ a lot. But, I had determination of steel. I was determined to take just a very small serving of each thing. I did. Then, I determined that I liked each thing so much that I might have a little more of everything. I did. Not necessarily a little, but definitely everything. Oh my. It was all so good. Here we are in December. It is the one month more than any other that we tend to eat our way through, from day one right through day thirty-one. Oh sure there are days here and there where we promise ourselves we won’t eat a thing so our new outfit will fit well on New Years Eve. Aren’t those the days we always run into some-

Peace ... that is something that is needed the world over as we face the turmoil of these most difficult times. that truly is “Kids helping Kids”, which is a very successful outreach program sponsored by the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation located Irving, California. PCRF has been

very successful in bringing encouragement and hope to recovering Child Cancer Patients for many years. The survival rate of children with cancer has improved over the past 25 years from 15% to 80% due to Children’s Cancer Research Foundations. The Irvine, California Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation is a most efficient research organization, as 80 cent of every dollar raised goes directly to research. I cringed when she gave me the shot. It didn’t really hurt—my reflexes had taken over again. I’m a big girl now, but even after decades of shots for one thing or another, I’d cringed reflexively. What a strange shot to be getting in my old age, I thought. Whooping cough—who’d have thought? With tetanus mixed in; I don’t know why. I should’ve asked, I guess. But whooping cough, once seemingly almost eradicated, is beginning to claim young babies again. And babies get it from their caretakers. So greatgrandmother that I am, I don’t want to be the one to give whooping cough to my precious little 6-monthold Owen. Hence, my shot, even if I did cringe. Think of all the maladies we’ve held at bay with immunization! Yet the diseases are always there, lurking in the background, awaiting their chance to reemerge. As long as the balances we’ve established in our civilized society remain, we feel safe. But let a

tries. “Other countries”? We say that as if it were of little consequence to us. Yet we are of one globe, one humanity. And even if we don’t really care about people in other countries, just remember how quickly the HIV-aids virus became of consequence to us. Go back one further: smallpox. Do you remember the exuberant publicity in the ‘80s when it was deemed that smallpox had been eradicated, the last case gone? Since it’s transmitted by contact with a smallpox patient, and there were no more patients, the disease was gone. So now it’s whooping cough, a thing of the past, or so it seemed. But we’ve already heard of more than one baby’s death. Waiting in the wings, pertussis (as it’s formally known) is on the rise. We have the means for keeping it at bay, so let’s take a shot at controlling it for all the little Owens of the world, starting, if need be, with the grandmothers. Even if, for a moment, we cringe reflexively!

Carols, Choirs, and Cookies “Joy in This Place” will be the holiday music theme for a Carol-Sing/ Cookie-Feast hosted by the Women’s Association of the Arcadia Presbyterian Church. US Postal Serive Promises to Deliver in Time for Holidays Neither rain nor snow nor heat nor gloom of night will keep the Postal Service from doing what it does best — delivering the holidays. Between now and Christmas Eve, the Postal Service will deliver 15.8 billion cards, letters and packages across the country and around the world. “The holiday season isn’t just the busiest time of the year for the Postal Service — it’s our best time of year,” said Steve Forte, senior vice president, Operations. “We’re the holiday mailing and shipping experts.” The Postal Service expects to deliver nearly 3 billion cards and letters over the holidays and there are more than 3 billion holiday stamps available to handle the volume. This year, a snowman and the words “Happy Holidays” will appear in the upper right-hand corner of greeting cards and letters mailed during the month of De-

Arcadia Library to Celebrate Open Source Library Catalog The Arcadia Public Library will celebrate its grand opening of the new and first open source Library Catalog in Southern California beginning December 13. Here are some of the new features: •It’s simplicity! The new catalog offers simple, clear searching. •The Library can implement new features to better serve the public and improve work processes for the staff. •Suggestions for Library purchases are available right from the catalog. •Expanded searches are possible, with simple and clear instructions.

The Arcadia Public Library is very excited about implementing this new open source integrated library system (ILS). As technology continues to change, so does the Library. The Arcadia Public Library has had three different integrated library systems (ILS) over the past twenty years. The last migration was in 2002. Through a grant from the California State Library, the Arcadia Public Library is able to cover some of the

initial costs to change over to this new system. The Arcadia Public Library has contracted with ByWater Solutions for the migration, hosting and support of the Koha integrated library system. What is Koha? Koha is the first open-source integrated library system. Koha was originally developed in New Zealand by Katipo Communications Ltd. for Horowhenua Library Trust. It first went live in January, 2000. Koha is currently maintained by a team of software providers and library technology staff from around the world. There are over 1000

libraries running on Koha internationally. Why Koha and why now? The past two years have been financially tough for public libraries and Arcadia Public Library has been no exception. The Library was asked to hold the line on costs and/or reduce costs as much as feasible. Costs for the current ILS system continued to climb these past two years and we were unsuccessful in getting the current vendor to keep costs the same and/or to reduce them. The Library has been interested in an open source integrated library system for a couple

of years and when staff compared costs of the current ILS to an open source library system, Arcadia Public Library was very impressed with what was “free” with an open source package. This included the initial purchase, additional modules that were unattainable due to high costs before, upgrades, test environment license and more. It’s not completely free but it is a big savings from what is currently being paid out now. Check out the new Library Catalog in person or online beginning December 13!

Santa to Make Many Holiday Appearances in Duarte in December Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus and he’ll be spending quite a bit of time in Duarte this holiday season beginning on Thursday, Dec. 2 with the City’s official Christmas tree lighting ceremony and fiesta. Festivities will take place at the Duarte Community Center from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and include musical performances featuring cultural dancers, carolers and a visit by Santa Claus, along with games and holiday crafts for children. The event is free. A tamale dinner will be available for purchase for $6 person. At 8 p.m. Santa will join Duarte Mayor Tzeitel Paras-Caracci in lighting the City Christmas tree, a 45-foot living Redwood. County Library Tax Increase Proposed The Los Angeles Library Commission and County Librarian Margaret Donnellan Todd submitted a report asking the Board of Supervisors Tuesday to approve putting a Library Tax icrease on a ballot in 2011. Todd maintains that the Los Angeles County Library system is in dire need of assistance. The Board of Supervisors declined to take action on the request and instead chose to file the report for consideration. Library officials said they

did not know how much the tax would be, but said the proposed change would generate between $12 million and $23 million each year over the next decade. The report detailed possible solutions to the county library system’s estimated $22 million structural deficit over the n ext 10 years. The report said a $27.84 annual parcel passed in 1997 is already paid by owners of 407,000 parcels in unincorporated county areas and 11 cities, including El Monte, Duarte and La Canada Flintridge

That tax generates $11.3 million per year, or 10 percent of the library’s operating fees, according to the staff report. In Duarte, the parcel tax keeps the library open six days a week. Meanwhile libraries outside the assessment area are now open only four days per week. The County reduced its contributions to library services by $3.4 million from the 2008-09 fiscal year, to the 201011 period. The library system is also funded through property taxes.

It would offer high school graduates or equivalent, who have been in the country for at least five years and were younger than 16 when they first en-

Pasadena Woman In Need of Life-Saving Transplant With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant patients are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-needy patients. In Pasadena, volunteers are raising funds for transplant patients like local woman Samantha Dancer. Born on January 24, 1990, Samantha was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia, and doctors at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California recommended a life-saving bone marrow

transplant. An estimated $70,000 is being raised by Pasadena volunteers. Volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising activities. Metrolink Receives $6.6 Million Federal Grant for Positive Train Control On Fri., Nov. 19, United States Secretary of Transportation Ray Lahood announced that Metrolink received a $6.6 million Federal Railroad Administration grant to help fund Positive Train Control (PTC) collision avoidance systems. The project will receive money through the new Railroad Safety Technology Grant program. PTC systems use Global Positioning System technology to monitor and control a train’s movements, in order to enforce speed limits, prevent train collisions and help keep railroad workers and passengers safe. In a press release, Secretary Lahood said, “This

new program will help keep the rails safer by accelerating installation of positive train control technology where it is needed most.” Six other projects will share the total $50 million in awards. Decisions on the competitively-awarded grants were based on technical merit, including the extent to which a project helps achieve interoperability between technologies and the recipient’s project management capabilities and financial commitment to share costs. “These funds are critical as we continue our mission to provide the safest rail service in the nation. Because we dispatch trains for all Southern California

the moment you enter the Sierra Madre Playhouse. Carolers outside the Playhouse fill the air with familiar tunes. Garlands festoon the foyer, a faux living room corner graces the hall, and 1800-ish décor takes us back to an earlier era. ’Twas that era in which Charles Dickens lived and wrote what he called his “little Christmas book.” The book, of course, has survived these many generations, and never fails to evoke the Christmas spirit when we see it come to life on the stage. And come to life it does, in this year’s musical version of “A Christmas Carol.” Infusing the classic tale with a fresh edginess, director Christina Harris offers us a more sympathetic look at old Ebenezer Scrooge. His name has become synonymous with penuriousness. However, as we see some of the rejection and loneliness in young Ebenezer’s life, we may understand why he became the iconic “bah-humbug” man. But first we find Scrooge toiling at his desk and begrudging Bob Cratchit another coal in the stove to warm their office. Stuart James Galbraith brings his native accent to the role of Scrooge. And he carries well the mantle of Scrooge through his emotional ranges—from abrasive to frightened to pensive to ebullient, as he goes through the night with the ominous spirits who visit him. Each Christmas Spirit is eerie in its own way, and the accompanying music is a real mood-setter. Toni Smith is ghostly in a white gown with light-bulb auras as Christmas Past. Ron Schneider as Christmas Present wears a holly crown and a portentous green robe ample enough to hide the traditional two little imps beneath its folds. Matthew Herrmann is unrelenting as he reveals to Scrooge what may lie in his Christmas Future. Poor Bob Cratchit! Karl Maschek has the perfect deferential mien to portray him as the clerk. He also lights

the room with his warm smile when he is with his loving wife (Sarah Logan) and his flock of children, including everyone’s favorite, Tiny Tim. The youngster is played by Cody James Brown and Mark Challita on varying performances. Seth Margolies as a rollicking Fezziwig and his wife (Kady Douglas) bounce and bubble their way through a merry party entertaining friends. (On opening night, Christina Harris played Mrs. Fezziwig, along with her other duties as director, choreographer, and sound designer.) The cast comprises nearly three dozen people, and many of them play two or three characters. Moreover, some parts are played by different actors on different nights. Each is credited in the handsome program printed on softly colored holidaythemed paper. Even with program in hand, it isn’t easy to identify cast members. But that doesn’t keep the story from rolling on, and we all are familiar with it, so we can just sit back and enjoy it. Musical interludes of song and dance are interspersed as scenes unfold, each melody chosen to complement the action. Rich Dembowski is music director. Michelina Wright as “violinist estraordinaire” offers special musical touches. In addition to those mentioned elsewhere, the cast includes Allison Oliver, Annemarie Werthwein, Arianna Merkell, Clay Bunker, Erika Whalen, Georgia Miller, Grant Smith, Greta Storlie, Kari Irwin, Lindsey Beck, Matthew Bond, Meg Momsen, Paul Bond, Ranya Jaber, Sarah Gilman, Sean Peterson, Sophia Davis, Sophie Johnson, Steve Neumeier, Teddy Oldenbourg, Trey West, and Zayd Jaber. Ward Calaway is producer of “A Christmas Carol.” Kristen Cox is assistant director and lighting designer. Don Bergmann and David Calhoun designed the Victorian set that adapts as both an indoor and outdoor back-

ground. Ashley Jo Navarro is sound tech and also stage manager, with Erika Cepeda as her assistant. Maureen Davis is light tech. Liz Peterson as costume designer has provided (from Valentino’s Costumes) varied and appropriate garb for everyone, be they party-goers, townspeople, waifs, grave-robbers, or the Cratchit family. Anne Marie Atwan, Linda DeMetrick, and Mike Dessin handle the properties. Poster art design is by Rick Taylor, and photography by Donald Songster. Daniel Peixe is the artist, and Philip Sokoloff the publicist. Roberto Merkell handles backstage crew tasks. And a good many of the actors themselves are credited in the program as the construction crew. While “A Christmas Carol” is a charming play for families with children of all ages, it is also a delightful prelude to the holidays simply for people of all ages. For many, attending is a long-standing tradition. “A Christmas Carol” will continue at the Sierra Madre Playhouse through Thursday, Dec. 23, with extra weekday performances. Pasadena Pops Plans Holiday Music Extravaganza The whole symphony musical family gathers for a bright Christmas sing BY BILL PETERS I don’t know how the Pasadena Symphony people could have gathered a better group of musicians to celebrate our holiday season than what is planned for the 2nd annual Holiday Pops Concert by the Pasadena Pops Orchestra. The holiday concert is to be presented at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Music on the program will include “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, “The Polar Express”, and favorites “Jingle Bells”, “Silent Night” and “Sleigh Ride” conducted by guest conductor Grant Cooper. Actress Alison Sweeney will recite “T’was the night before Christmas” and she prom-

ises “Santa Claus is comin’ to town,” she said, enthused about the holidays and the upcoming program. Other artists participating in the holiday extravaganza with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra will be baritone Patrick Mason, the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and the Donald Brinegar Singers. Mason, a Professor of Voice at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a 2006 Grammy nominee, possesses persuasive credentials (that include collaborations with Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and George Crumb among others) and as far as we could learn, this will be his first Pasadena appearance. Sweeney, actress, author, and TV host, is the daughter of a third-generation Pasadena family, her mother was a member of the Pasadena Symphony. Murder Suspect Continued from page 1 developed information that led to the arrest of four individuals for this crime. Two adults, Andy Lieu, 18 years old from El Monte, and Jonah Moon, 18 years old from Norwalk, along with two 17 year old juveniles were booked at the Arcadia City Jail on attempted murder charges. The juveniles were from Alhambra and Cypress. Detectives believe that the attack was in retaliation for an altercation that took place earlier in the day in another local city and that

both incidents were gang related. All four suspects are believed to be members of a local Asian street gang. A felony complaint was filed on November 29, 2010 by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office with charges of attempted murder - PC 664/187(a) and criminal street gang enhancements on each of the four suspects. Lieu, Moon, and the two juveniles are being held on $1,000,000.00 bail at Los Angeles County facilities.

Djbril is an internationally recognized artist with work in galleries, homes and businesses throughout West Africa, the USA, Mexico, Cuba, Western Europe and Japan. “Djbril is a Sierra Madre resident, and has exhibited his work at our Friend’s Art Fair for several years “said Pat. “He’s graciously agreed to produce and donate his original art work for our Wine Tasting poster which you’ll soon see around town. Born 1953 into the Lebou Tribe in Senegal, West Africa, self-taught N’Doye considers his work to be “universal” art, his style of drawing inspired by sculptures in ebony. Previously working with standard materials such as oils and watercolor, after a half dozen years of experimentation and research, Djbril developed his own distinct technique using only ballpoint pen. After taking the ballpoint pen drawings to a very high level of professionalism, he began using charcoal pencil on larger surfaces to further develop his

intensely emotional drawing style. After receiving numerous awards throughout Africa, in 1985, Djbril founded Suunu Artist’s Group in Bargny, his hometown, with the objective of encouraging and developing local artists, painters and writers, to support the Bargny Artist community. After relocating to the USA in 1995, N’Doye has devoted his time to developing his own exhibits. He’s actively participating in a number of Southern California galleries and festivals as well as speaking to students from grammar schools to college. Track Resurfacing On Schedule, Training Set To Open On New Santa Anita Dirt Track On Dec. 6 Santa Anita Park will welcome horses to its new, all-natural dirt main track on Monday, Dec. 6, as “The Great Race Place” will reopen for training in advance of its traditional opener on Dec. 26,. Santa Anita’s main track was comprised of synthetic material from September of 2007 through Oct. 11 when construction began on the new surface. “We’re elated to be able to welcome everyone back,” said Santa Anita President George Haines. “We’re ready to get back to business. We expect the stable area to begin filling up over the weekend and we’ll have horses back on the main track on Monday morning. “We’re not only offering our fans and horsemen a new track, but we’re also going to be offering huge purses, which will be for everyone’s benefit. We expect that our purses are

going to be 25 percent higher than they were a year ago and this should result in larger, more competitive fields which will provide better wagering opportunities.” Haines also said that although recent rains resulted in a few weather-related delays, the main track project has remained on schedule. “We’ll begin grooming the surface Wednesday and we’ll take the next five days to work with the material. With any project of this magnitude, there’s going to be some settling of the dirt and we’ll need to work with and monitor that. “I think everyone understands that as the track will change some in the

first week or so. We’ve asked the horsemen to take their time and jog their horses and let them get

necessary.” As a result of live racing being transferred to Hollywood Park this fall,

Obituaries Charles (Michy) Nomura 1915 - 2010

Charles ( Michy) Nomura, 95, passed away peacefully November 25, 2010 at his home in Pasadena. Born in Arcadia on May 19, 1915, Michy Nomura lived most of his life in Southern California. He worked until he was eightyfive, mostly for Wianko Engineering and DB Products, Pasadena aerospace electronics firms. After Pearl Harbor, Charles Nomura was interned with thousands of other Japanese Americans under FDR’s orders. He was interned at Gila, Arizona, which was a 15,000acre Relocation Center, situated on land leased from the Pima Indian Agency. He also spent time at the Hinsdale, Illinois, where he and his family lived with and worked for the Henry Rignery family. Since 1945 Charles Nomura has lived in Pasadena. Aside from the love of his life, Taka, Michy also passionately enjoyed fishing, gardening and woodcarv-

ing. One of his many talents was creating tiny monarch butterfly pins from tiny cuts of wood he hand-carved and painted. The completed butterfly pins were given as gifts.orrected Charles (Michy) Nomura was pre-deceased by grandson Neal Naito. He is survived by his wife Taka; daughter, Chris Naito; son, Stephen Nomura and his wife, Ginger; brother Sho and his wife Florence; sister Helen and her husband Ray Obazawa; granddaughters Nicki and husband Gene Lew, and Anna Nomura; and great-grandsons Kevin and Gregory Lew. He is also survived by a great many nieces, nephews and other relatives in the United States as well as Japan. A celebration of his extraordinary life will be held on Saturday December 18th at 1:30 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Altadena, 2776 Lincoln Avenue, Pasadena. Charles G. “Chuck” Souder, 69

Former Marine and Temple City Councilman Chuck Souder passed away Thanksgiving Eve after a brief illness. Chuck Souder served on the council for nine years and was Mayor for two terms. Souder also had served on the city’s Planning Commission for four years and as president of the city’s Sister Cities Commission, and chairman of Camellia Festival planning committing. He was also very active with the Kiwanis Club as well, in 2009 he was the President. Souder was known as Temple City’s Santa Claus because of his long white beard. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958 to 1965. There will be a private service for Chuck this Saturday from 4-8 p.m. in Long Beach. The city will have a memorial service for Chuck but it will be after the first of the year. Some of the reactions from Temple City officials and residents follow: “Chuck’s life of service is an inspiration to challenge

ourselves to work for the good of others. His gentle spirit will live on in the hearts of many! Chuck will be missed but forever remembered by a community that loved him.” - Mark Ferrari, former resident of Temple City, 1960-2000 and served as a Commissioner for the Parks and Recreation Commission. “My favorite memory of Chuck was about thirteen years ago. My 4 year old granddaughter was visiting from Phoenix. She was so worried that Santa would not find her so far away from home. Chuck pulled in our driveway just when we were walking up to his house to deliver a Christmas gift. There he was in a red shirt (he always wore one from Dec 1st on), in his dark red El Camino. Her little mouth dropped open and he played along without missing a beat! It was a priceless moment.”

We all know that he was “Santa” during our holiday events (even before we started Lights on Temple City, he was Santa for our Dinner with Santa); but more than being Santa to hundreds of children (including my two), he also helped feed the Marine Corps band each year for our Independence Day Celebrations, he barbecued for City events, he was present for the Easter Egg Hunts, Halloween Carnivals, and all our other events. He felt it was so important for the Council

to be seen at the community events and to mingle with the residents. Both my children grew up knowing Chuck because he was at every event (as they were). As they got older (they are now 22 and 24) Chuck always asked how they were doing; if they were behaving, etc. When I told me daughter (22 years) that Chuck had passed away she said “No, my Santa can’t be gone.” I think that’s how most of us feel. For me personally, I started going to Council meetings when Chuck was on the Council. I always found Chuck to be a very strong, and respectful, Councilmember. Even if he disagreed with someone (including me) he was always polite and respectful in getting his point across. I will never forget the way he would look over his glasses at someone when they were starting to get on his nerves. That’s when I knew it was time to let something go . If there was ever anyone who embodied what Temple City is all about (a small town community where everyone knows everyone and helps out their neighbor; where most people do what’s good and right just because it’s the right thing to do; where people really care about each other and about their city) Chuck Souder was that person. Although he didn’t grow up in Temple City, and may not have lived in the City for as long as some other individuals, I don’t think you could find anyone who loved this City more than he did, or was willing to do more for the City and its residents, than he was.” - Cathy Burroughs

POLICE BLOTTERS Arcadia PD

For the period of Sunday, November 21, through Saturday, November 27, the Police Department responded to 804 calls for service of which 110 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, November 21: Between noon on November 19 and 1:25 p.m. on November 21, a residential burglary occurred in the 300 block of West Duarte. While the home was tented for fumigation, unknown suspect(s) entered the location and stole jewelry, watches, silver coins, and a digital camera. Around 1:00 p.m., units responded to Macy’s regarding a woman detained for theft. Loss prevention personnel recognized the female suspect who had stolen from the store on previous occasions and was kept under observation. The woman selected merchandise, went into a fitting room, and then concealed the items. A private person’s arrest was made, and a 53-year-old Asian was taken into custody for commercial burglary.

Monday, November 22: A traffic stop was initiated at St. Joseph and Santa Anita around 10:43 a.m. for a code violation, and a 31-year-old male Hispanic driver was contacted. A record check revealed that the man was on parole for narcotics and a consent search of the vehicle was made. A baggie of crystalline substance was found, and the driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and felony parole violation. A residential burglary was reported in the 100 block of Magna Vista around 4:40 p.m. Two male Hispanic suspects, claiming to be gardeners, approached the residents and they went to the backyard to discuss possible gardening services. While the residents were distracted, a third suspect entered the house and stole several thousand dollars in cash.

Tuesday, November 23: A commercial burglary

occurred in the 11900 block of Goldring between 11:00 a.m. on November 22 and 9:00 a.m. on November 23. Unknown suspect(s) smashed a window to enter the business and then stole various tools. Units responded to Baby Gap located at Westfield Mall round 8:24 p.m. in reference to a theft investigation. Loss prevention personnel discovered that one of their employees had made several fraudulent cash refunds since August. A 29-year-old female Hispanic was arrested for grand theft.

Wednesday, November 24: A 37-year-old man was arrested for battery around 7:40 a.m. at a Chevron gas station located at 500 North Santa Anita. During an altercation over custody issues, the man became physical with his ex-wife. A 1993 white Honda Civic was stolen from Golden West and Hunting between 8:54 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The car was later recovered on November 25 by LAPD.

Thursday, November 25: Units responded to Dave & Busters around 9:35 p.m. in reference to a theft. A female suspect stole two jackets from the bar area. During the investigation at Dave & Busters, a 28-year-old male Hispanic was detained as he was seen hanging out with the female suspect involved in the above theft. A record check of the man revealed that he had an outstanding warrant and was taken into custody.

Friday, November 26: Around 5:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to Westfield Mall regarding a stabbing in progress. During a fight between several male Asians, a victim sustained a non-life threatening stab wound in the abdomen and a laceration on his neck. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene, while the primary suspect who had stabbed the victim fled the location.

On November 27, officers went to the City of San Gabriel and arrested the 18-year-old primary suspect for attempted murder. Shortly before 11:30 p.m., officers were called to Foothill and Don Alvarado in reference to a vehicle blocking the roadway. A 25-year-old male Hispanic driver was contacted and it was determined that he was operating the vehicle while intoxicated. The man was arrested for DUI without incident.

Saturday, November 27: A commercial burglary occurred at Maki Sushi, 302 East Huntington, between 10:30 p.m. on November 26 and 10:00 a.m. on November 27. Unknown suspect(s) pried open the rear door and stole cash. Several arrests were made at Westfield Mall for c o m mercial burglary. T w o Asians, both 21 years of age, were arrested from Sports Chalet for stealing almost $600 in merchandise; a 27-year-old female Asian was arrested for stealing $700 in cosmetics from Sephora and a $20 item from Brookstone; a 25-year-old female Asian was arrested at Macy’s for concealing over $635 in merchandise in her purse, shopping bag, and baby stroller.

Sunday, November 21st: 06:21 AM- Arrest Residential Burglary, 290 blk. W. Montecito Ave. The victim returned home after being away for several weeks and reported a burglary of her garage.

CITY OF ARCADIA NOTICES

On November 7th at 3:15 a.m. a Sierra Madre police sergeant arrested the suspect near 99 N. Hermosa Ave. after finding him with property from the victim’s burglary, which had not yet been reported. At that time the sergeant called the victim, who positively identified the loss that was in the suspect’s possession. The suspect was arrested and is still in custody. The District Attorney has charged the suspect with burglary and receiving stolen property. 10:47 AM- Arrest Possession of Controlled Substance Prescribed to Another, 140 blk. N. Mountain Trail Ave. The suspect’s girlfriend called police to report that he was despondent. Officers responded and found the suspect, who was in possession of marijuana and several bottles of prescription medication not belonging to him. He also had a $50,000 warrant for battery. Officers arrested the suspect and took him to the Los Angeles County Jail for booking.

Monday, November 22nd: 05:54 PM- Residential Burglary, 500 blk. Ramona Ave. Unknown suspect(s) entered a home through the southwest bathroom window. The loss included a Sony 40” screen HDTV television, valued at $400.00; an Omega men’s gold watch worth $2,000.00, a Canon digital camera worth $100.00, a 1” long rectangular jade pendant worth $120.00, a Sony 46” screen HDTV television worth $1,100.00, a Nintendo Play Station 3 worth $150.00, Nintendo Wii game console worth $100.00, and 4 Wii games worth $28.00. The total loss is about $4,000. Tuesday, November 23rd: 12:18 AM- Arrest - DUI Alcohol/Drugs, Michillinda Ave and Sierra Madre Blvd. An officer stopped a motorist for a Vehicle Code violation. Investigation revealed the driver was in driving under the influence of alcohol. During a car search the officer found gun ammunition. The Monrovia resident was arrested and taken to the Pasadena Police Department Jail for booking.
