By City News ServiceFirefighters were steadily gainingtheupper hand on the massive Post Fire in the Gorman area north of Los Angeles, increasing containment to 39% as of Wednesday morning.
The fire was holding at 15,611acresWednesday morning and weather conditions were expected to cooperate throughout the day, with temperatures in the low 70s and decreased winds.
Firefighters extended containment lines Tuesday, and a red flag warning for critical fire conditions expired Tuesday evening, with forecasters saying winds had fallen below advisory levels.
"Conditions will improve over the area Wednesday as winds decrease and minimum humidities trend higher with the return of onshore flow," according to the National Weather Service.
The fire, which broke out Saturday, prompted the evacuation of about 1,200 people from the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area. Evacuation orders remained in place there Wednesday, and also at Pyramid Lake and Oak Flats Campground.
An evacuation warning was in place for areas south of Pyramid Lake between Old Ridge Route and the Los Angeles County line, including Paradise Ranch Estates.
The following road closures were in place:
-- Northbound Interstate 5 at state Route 138;
-- Southbound Vista del Lago Road at the entrance to the Vista del Lago Visitors Center;

-- Eastbound Castaic Lake Drive at Ridge Route Road.
One commercial property has been destroyed, while 10 are being threatened, along with 50 single-family residences, fire officials said.
Authorities are officially reporting one injury from the fire, although no details were released.
The blaze is being battled by a unified command that includes the U.S. Forest Service, Angeles National Forest, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Ventura County Fire Department. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, California State Park Services, Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management, Cal Fire and California Highway Patrol were also providing support.
"Today, crews will continue extending and reinforcing their control lines to protect infrastruc-
ture and natural resources.
Infrastructure protection is ongoing around Pyramid Lake, including Pyramid Lake Dam and support facilities, as well as Southern California Edison electrical 500KV transmission lines," officials said in their Wednesday morning update.
"Other assets threatened are State and Federal recreation sites, communication sites, United States Forest Service fire stations, oil pipelines, private camps and residences along Interstate 5, and multiple waterways."
The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a wildfire smoke advisory for the Santa Clarita and Castaic areas, with northwesterly winds expected to push smoke from the fire southeast toward Santa Clarita, the San Fernando Valley and parts of the Angeles National Forest.
The SCAQMD advised people in the area to limit
their exposure by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed or by seeking immediate shelter, avoid vigorous physical activity and to run their air conditioners or air purifiers.
"It's best to avoid using swamp coolers or whole house fans that bring in outside air," the agency said.
``Residents should also avoid burning wood in their fireplaces or firepits. And, if they absolutely must be outside, a properly fit N95 mask or P100 respirator may provide some protection.
The Post Fire started at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Ralph's Ranch and Gorman School roads, near the Golden State (5) Freeway, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Craig Little told City News Service.
Some 1,747 personnel were involved in the firefighting effort.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.

LA County Public Health responds to privacy breach
By City News ServiceThe Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced Friday that a phishing attack in February allowed a hacker to gain log-in credentials of 53 employees, compromising the personal information of more than 200,000 people.
The attack through phishing email took place between Feb. 19 and 20. After discovering the breach, the health department said it disabled the impacted e-mail accounts, reset and re-imaged the users' devices, blocked websites that were identified as part of the phishing campaign and quarantined all suspicious incoming e-mails.
Additionally, notifications were distributed to all workforce members to remind them to be vigilant when reviewing e-mails, especially those including links or attachments. Law enforcement was notified and they investigated the incident, according to DPH.

Officials urge Southlanders to be prepared for 2024 wildfire season

Public safety officials Fridayreminded Southlanders to be vigilant in clearing brush from their properties during the 2024 wildfire season -and to have evacuation plans in place if needed.
"As we all have witnessed, Mother Nature has complemented us with significant rainfall in Southern California in the last couple of years, which was very much needed throughout the state of California," Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Anthony Marrone said at a multi-agency news conference Friday morning at the LACoFD's headquarters.

"The rain produced large fields of re-vegetation throughout the area, and this year we saw areas that received nearly 200% more rain than usual," Marrone said. "Unfortunately, this vegetation will soon dry out and become fuel for wildland fires, especially in the Santa Monica Mountains, the Santa Clarita Valley and the Antelope Valley.
"That is why we must continue to remain vigilant, and share with residents and communities the importance of being prepared for the wildfires that will come this summer and into the fall, when dangerous Santa Ana winds return. ... We can never let our guard down." Marrone said.
Marrone is the coordinator of the state of California's Fire and Rescue Region One,

which covers the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.
"As such, I work with my fire service partners so we can quickly dispatch mutual-aid resources when a large-scale emergency strikes -- like a wind-driven wildland fire," Marrone said. "With our full range of land and air resources available to our five counties 24 hours a day ... we want to assure our residents and communities that your firefighters in these five counties are prepared and ready to respond at a moment's notice."
Among the other top firefighting officials at the news conference was Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley.
"This morning we spent a lot of time talking about how we are prepared -- our partnership, our collaboration with the fire service leaders that are behind me," Crowley

said. "Just as important are our `boots on the ground' and the firefighters that are here that are fully committed to ensuring that we are ready for this upcoming brush season.
"But with that ... we all know that it's going to take much, much more than a prepared fire service -- it's going to take a prepared community as well," Crowley said.
Crowley urged residents to vigilant in creating a "defensible space" on their properties between buildings and vegetation that could catch fire.
"We have to understand ... that will help your local fire service protect lives and property," Crowley said. "I just want to define what that is: it's a buffer that you create between a building on your property and the grasses, trees, shrubs, or wildland area that surround it."
"Wildfire season might peak during certain months -- and that's why we are here today," Crowley said. "But the risk is present year-round. ... Together, we can make this brush fire season safer for everyone."
Officials also reminded people to have an evacuation plan ready if ordered to leave their properties for safety reasons, including knowing multiple routes out of a neighborhood.
More information is available on brush clearance and other public safety topics at www.LAFD.org. Information on state resources, including grants for residents to help fireproof their properties, is available at www.fire.ca.gov. Information on general preparedness for wildfires is available at www.readyforwildfire.org.
Crowley noted that the effort to keep property clear of combustibles should continue throughout the year, and not just during wildfire season.

Where in the world are people most optimistic about AI?
By Wade Zhou, Verbit via StackerWhen the internet firstbecame widely available in the 1990s, Americans and Canadians were among its quickest adopters. Shortly after, the rest of the world began to follow. Three decades later, the web has dramatically changed how people and businesses operate.
Today, around 90% of North Americans and 60% of people globally have access to the internet.
The majority of shopping, banking and socializing occurs online. The IRS reports that around 90% of American taxpayers now file their taxes electronically, and, as of 2023, the Pew Research Center found that 58% of American adults say they prefer getting their news digitally, while only 27% say they get their news from television.
In 2022, when artificial intelligence took the world by surprise with the release of ChatGPT, some users were quick to compare its sudden advancement to the rise of the internet. After a decadeslong "AI winter" of relatively stagnant progress, the technology suddenly started to move at a blistering pace. Two years later, chatbots are already changing how writers, programmers and researchers work.
Verbit analyzed survey data from Bosch to see where in the world people are the most excited by AI and how they hope it will change their lives. According to the December 2023 survey conducted in seven countries,
73% of people worldwide believe generative AI is as consequential as the rise of the internet.
Optimistic about AI
Bosch surveyed respondents between the ages of 18 and 69 from Brazil, China, Germany, France, India, the United Kingdom and the United States. The survey might not be representative of adults in every country polled; in China, for instance, Bosch only interviewed people from the wealthiest cities.
The data reveals a striking trend: In general, respondents from middle-income
tries also tend to have more educated professionals, such as doctors. AI systems that are smart enough to replace doctors and white collar workers might give many people a chance to afford services that they otherwise would not be able to, improving quality of life.
China, India and Brazil survey respondents ranked 'better work outcomes' higher than Western countries as a personal benefit of AI. Globally, respondents considered improving health and making life more comfortable among AI's top advantages.

countries are more optimistic about AI than those from high-income countries. Around 83% of respondents from China and 75% of people from India say that AI technologies will change the world for the better. In contrast, less than half of those surveyed in Germany, France and the U.S. agreed with the sentiment.
One reason for this discrepancy might be that people from developing countries have more to gain from the rise of AI. Wealthier coun-
Another reason for the divide between middle- and high-income countries might be that those in developing countries tend to be more optimistic about economic forecasts. For instance, a survey conducted by Ipsos found that respondents in emerging markets were more likely to have confidence in the global economic outlook; 91% of people in Indonesia thought 2024 would be a better year for them than 2023. Only 65% of U.S. respondents and

39% of people in Japan agreed. AI comes with plenty of risks

In a recent interview with Sally Kornbluth, president of Massachusetts Institute

believe AI will positively impact society — roughly the same share who believe AI will have a negative impact. Other emerging fields, such as biotechnology and climate engineering, were much less polarizing. Around 1 in 3 respondents thought those two technologies would be positive for society, while only 1 in 10 thought they would be harmful.
An estimated 52% of respondents said they worried AI might violate peoples' privacy or manipulate people's behavior. Many tech companies hope to build AI systems that can serve as personal
of Technology, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman pointed out that a robot that reads your emails and keeps track of your everyday activities could be used against you, possibly in a legal situation.
The most commonly cited fear about AI was its job loss. Some 53% of respondents agreed that AI systems could automate their jobs and replace them. People were especially fearful of humanoid robots — only 17% of respondents said they expected such machines to have a positive impact on society while 30% said they expected androids to have a negative effect.
These fears are not unfounded. AI is developing quickly, and estimates about its impact on the job market vary. One 2023 analysis by Goldman Sachs estimates that AI could partially automate one-fourth of work tasks in America and two-thirds of occupations. According to the investment bank's research, office administrative roles, legal professions, as well as architecture and engineering jobs are vulnerable to AI automation.
Historically, automation and new technology have vastly changed the workforce. For instance, agricultural innovations slashed the agricultural workforce; only about 1% of American workers are farmers today. The internet has eliminated certain businesses, such as movie rental stores and travel agencies. However, innovations have also opened doors. Deep data engineers and prompt developers are just some of the roles AI might help create. If AI is as disruptive as the internet, it could mean that many jobs will become obsolete — and others will be born.

Rescued dog at Joshua Tree National Park reunites with pet owner
A man and his dog reunited last week at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus after a recent rescue in Joshua Tree National Park. Christian Corona of Chino Hills was camping June 9 at the Jumbo Rocks campground when his 10-month-old Doberman, Onyx, seemingly got spooked and ran away. Many attempts to find the dog all day Saturday and early Sunday were unsuccessful. Later on Sunday, Joshua Tree National Park officials started getting reports of a dog sighting. Onyx had climbed to a perch on rock formations, approximately 200 feet up, near the campground. JOSAR – a search and rescue outfit that includes volunteers and National Park Service staffers –was activated to retrieve the dog. Fortunately for the JOSAR team, Onyx was in a spot that didn’t require much technical climbing. And the hike to the pooch only took about 15 minutes.

Monrovia Old Town report: Summer fun & fundraising
By Shawn Spencer shawn@girlfridaysolutions.net
If you have not been to the new Monrovia Farmer’s Market, you are missing out! Not to be confused with the Friday Night Street Fair, this is a completely separate event. Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Station Square, you will find a multitude of wonderful vendors. All vendors are certified California Farmers. Some but not all of the vendors offer organic produce. There are fruits, vegetables, a butcher, a fishmonger, fresh bread and baked goods. I didn’t see it, but I heard there is even ice cream. You can best believe I will find that booth this Saturday.
I’m not sure if the band is a sure thing every week, but it was really nice to be able to listen to live music while shopping. I’m hopeful even more vendors will join in. Honestly, there are enough produce vendors now, but I’ve got my fingers crossed for eggs, fresh pasta, cheeses and beef jerky. Go early before it gets hot, but definitely GO! It is a wonderful addition to our town.
This Sunday, June 23, there will be a fundraiser for the family of Nicolas Gandara. You might remember reading about the 39-year-old Monrovian who was shot and killed while trying to calm down
a disagreement between two individuals who apparently inhabit the riverbed area. The shooter was caught and arrested, yet Nic’s family is still struggling to make sense of his untimely and tragic death. Nic leaves behind a wife and six children. Nic’s son graduated Monrovia High School without his father just two days after he died. His daughter was promoted from kindergarten without her daddy. His youngest is only 8 weeks old. We, as a community, are trying to lessen the burden on this family with a FUNdraiser in his honor. It will be held at Mt. Lowe Brewing Company at 150 E. St. Joseph St. in Arcadia, from 1 to 8 p.m. There will be music, games, face painting, Tim the Bubble Man will be joining us. Sepulveda Tattoo will be offering flash tattoos from 2 to 6 p.m.The Smoking Grill and Perlitas Oysters will be on hand to feed everyone. There will also be an auction and Cash Bingo. This will be a super fun event for the entire family so please do come and support this family. Bring your cash or your Venmo. How a network of nonprofits enriches fundraisers while spending almost nothing on its stated causes
By Ellis Simani, ProPublica
In September 2020, the Federal Trade Commission joined regulators in four states to sue four men behind a notorious telemarketing company called Outreach Calling. The FTC alleged that the company, which it described as a “sprawling fundraising operation,” had raised millions on the promise of helping the needy — cancer patients, veterans, firefighters — but instead used the money to line its pockets.
The case was meant to put fundraisers on notice. The FTC would not only go after charities that improperly spent donor dollars, but it would “aggressively pursue their fundraisers who participate in the deception,” a news release said.
The executives and corporate entities behind the operation were fined more than $58 million. They were also banned from all charitable fundraising for life. But regulators kept one door open in most of the settlements: the ability to continue fundraising for political purposes.
For Thomas Berkenbush, who was a co-manager at Outreach, that provision would prove to be a windfall.
Before the deal with the FTC was even finalized, Berkenbush filed paperwork to establish a new company, Office Edge LLC. Since then, Office Edge has been paid about $866,000 for fundraising from organizations that similarly claim to be working on behalf of cancer patients, veterans and firefighters. The difference? These groups are not charities, they’re political nonprofits that claim to use donations to influence elections and support broad political causes.
The groups that are hiring Berkenbush are known as 527s, after a section of the tax code. They include federal political action committees — organizations that raise money to elect or defeat candidates and are regulated by the Federal Election Commission — but also a lesserknown group of nonprofits. These 527 groups limit their direct support to political candidates, removing them from the jurisdiction of the FEC or similar state agencies and leaving their regulation to the IRS. They do not have restrictions on how much donors can contribute, but the donations are not tax deductible.
comment. But during the process of our reporting, the eight groups that have websites added prominent “Transparency Statements” with essentially identical language.
“We advocate for the needs of veterans, by informing voters of these needs and asking them to take action. This is our only purpose,” the statement for the National Coalition for Disabled Veterans reads. It also says, “When you make a contribution, we want you to know that a minimum of 90 cents of every dollar will be dedicated to covering our fundraising costs and outreach efforts.”
dants — who did not admit or deny any of the allegations in the FTC complaint — were required to submit yearly compliance reports to New York, disclosing all fundraising activity for five years after the agreement was reached. The office confirmed that some of the defendants have reported business activity with 527 groups but did not say whether this prompted any investigations. Berkenbush did not respond to requests for comment.
is scant evidence the organizations calling Eggers do what they claim.
A ProPublica investigation has connected Berkenbush to a network of at least 10 of these 527 groups that have raised more than $33 million on the promise of supporting admirable causes, but that have spent little on activities that could be construed as having a political purpose. Most of the money goes to fundraisers who have only been paid by 527s in the group ProPublica identified.
Experts say that it’s hard for the public to follow the business practices of 527 groups because of how difficult it is to access the records that the IRS publishes about their activity. Data about 527 organizations is published on an IRS website in a hard-to-use data file with a limited search interface. On top of that, experts said that there is lax oversight by the federal agencies in charge of regulating the groups.
“There is no enforcement whatsoever,” said William Josephson, the former head of the charities bureau within New York’s attorney general’s office. “It’s just not a big enough issue for the IRS.”
None of the organizations responded to ProPublica’s requests for
The IRS did not respond to questions from ProPublica about our findings in any detail. The FTC declined to comment on why some of the settlement agreements in its case against Outreach Calling permitted political fundraising. The New York attorney general’s office, whose lawyers played a significant role in the case, told ProPublica that it can’t prohibit political fundraising because of First Amendment protections. But it maintained that the settlement agreements forbid the defendants from engaging in any fraudulent conduct while fundraising, regardless of the organization’s tax status or stated purpose.
Under the terms of the settlements, the defen-
One of the organizations ProPublica identified, the American Breast Cancer Coalition, contacted retiree Laurence Eggers in April for a donation.
Eggers lives in Pasadena, California, has Parkinson’s disease and frequently volunteers his time and money for various causes. He made a pledge to give $100 to the group, later telling a reporter that he gives out of appreciation for the people they claim to be helping.
“They really do need it,” he said in an interview. “They’ve worked hard enough to deserve it.”
Eggers has given at least $1,500 to the nonprofit in the past three years. He said his phone rings two to three times a day with different causes asking him for money. However, there
See Nonprofits Page 08
The American Breast Cancer Coalition, for example, has taken in nearly $9 million from donors since 2019 and has spent less than half of 1% of that on “voter advocacy and outreach.” The rest of the money — millions of dollars — goes to companies with names like Action Committee Marketing, Capital Vendor Management and Berkenbush’s Office Edge. Berkenbush’s company pulled in $222,000 just from this one organization.
The network has paid millions to a handful of other vendors, including one of Berkenbush’s former colleagues at Outreach Calling, whose company brought in more than $3.4 million in expenditures. He and his firm did not respond to requests for comment.
Another man, Alan Bohms, was paid more than $575,000 by the American Breast Cancer Coalition through a company he controlled named Campaign Marketing Inc., which also did business under the names Insight Data Management and Prestige Tax & Payroll. The company has taken in close to $1.5 million from the network of nonprofits ProPublica identified. Bohms was not

a member of Outreach Calling or subject to the FTC order, but he has previously paid the company millions to fundraise for one of his nonprofits.
In an email, Bohms defended the money that the groups spend on fundraising, writing that the phone calls are central to “educating and engaging the community about the PAC’s mission and objectives.”
ProPublica reporters uncovered the web of connections between the groups by compiling the reports they file into a searchable database, offering a level of visibility similar to what’s available for records collected by the FEC. (Read more about our new database.)
Web of Connections
Even on their surface, the connections between these groups are obvious: Six of the organizations in this network have websites that were built using the same platform and share similar designs. All but one process donations using an obscure payment system also used by several political nonprofits that federal prosecutors began investigating after a New York Times story last year.
Nearly all used similar or identical language when describing the purpose of the organization in IRS filings. They share significant overlap in both donors and contractors, and they often reuse the same language when describing expenditures or donors, including multiple organizations listing an identical description for services from different companies: “Fundrais-
ing, Donor Management, Database Services, Direct Mail Services, Postage.”
At least half of the organizations ProPublica identified worked with the same Morristown, Tennessee-based accounting firm on their IRS filings, Purkey, Carter, Compton, Swann & Carter. Bohms also uses the firm for his own nonprofit, the Volunteer Firefighter Alliance, telling ProPublica that the firm maintained high standards of integrity. The firm did not respond to requests for comment.
Fire departments across the country warned people against donating to Bohms’ charity, and both he and the charity were written about in a 2020 Salon story that connected Bohms to a network of “scam PACs.”
“VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER ALLIANCE is a FRAUD!” exclaimed one 2021 post on Facebook from the Alpha Fire Company in Centre County, Pennsylvania. “Do not give money to this organization! They are not your local fire company.”
Records show that one of the charity’s main fundraisers was Outreach Calling, the company shut down by the FTC. The Volunteer Firefighters Alliance paid $4.8 million to the company for fundraising in total. Bohms defended Outreach’s work, telling ProPublica that he “found Outreach Calling to be very professional and had never experienced any problems with them.”
Bohms’ family members also appear to help run the nonprofits that pay his companies. His sister, Julie Forsythe, is listed as the treasurer of the National Cancer Alliance, which
Nonprofits
“works to establish the end of childhood cancer by making it a state and national priority.” Another organization, the National Coalition for Disabled Veterans PAC, reports its treasurer as Bohms’ aunt, Judith Gragert. In the last five years, these two organizations have raised over $7 million from more than 700 donors around the country.
Like all of these groups, neither used much of the money they raised in support of their stated efforts. Effectively all of the expenditures that both groups reported were for either fundraising or other administrative costs. Together, the organizations paid more than $300,000 to Campaign Marketing Inc., the company owned by Bohms.
Gragert and Forsythe did not respond to requests for comment. Bohms told ProPublica that he works with 527 groups “strictly in the capacity of a vendor,” and that the payments made to his companies were for legitimate services. He denied any involvement in decision-making at the groups that listed his aunt and sister as treasurer.
“It is important to understand that the payments made to fundraisers encompass more than just fundraising activities,” Bohms wrote in an emailed response. “These funds support a broad range of outreach efforts, including phone calls and direct mail campaigns that are designed to inform the public about the PAC’s goals and initiatives.”
At least one of the groups ProPublica identi-

fied has been sued over its fundraising practices. A pair of call recipients filed a lawsuit seeking class-action status in 2022 against the National Police & Sheriffs Coalition PAC. Lawyers for the plaintiffs alleged that the group used prerecorded voice calls to contact potential donors without their consent, in violation of FCC rules that are meant to protect consumers from telemarketers.
“Many of these PACs are illegitimate,” said Eric Weitz, whose law firm is on the team representing plaintiffs. “They prey on people’s political leanings.”
One of the defendants named in the lawsuit was Frank Pulciani, the organization’s treasurer. Pulciani maintained that prerecorded messages were not improperly used in calls to donors, and that the fundraising company the group hired was responsible for ensuring that calls complied with the law. Pulciani settled with the plaintiffs for undisclosed terms, and the organization
was dissolved in February of last year.
Pulciani is also closely connected to Bohms. The two men, who both produce and act in low-budget films, recently worked on a project called “Murder by Association.” In its trailer, posted to YouTube, Bohms and Pulciani can be seen decked out in suits and dark sunglasses.
Pulciani did not respond to requests for comment.
Robert Bernhoft, whose firm represented Pulciani in the lawsuit, declined to comment.
Used and Abused
For Eggers, the donor who gave to the American Breast Cancer Coalition, the revelation that some of the organizations he’s been supporting are using almost none of what they raise for their stated purpose was discouraging.
“I feel like I’m being used and they’re being abused,” he said, referring to those he aimed to help with his donations.
On the mantle above Eggers’ fireplace rests a
selection of plaques, framed photographs and certificates that showcase his commitment to giving. One award from 2012, titled “Lending a Helping Hand,” recognizes his 31 years of volunteering for a local organization providing services to the homeless. Another, from a regional branch of the American Red Cross, celebrates his donations to a blood platelet program.
He showed ProPublica a letter he received from the American Breast Cancer Coalition this past April.
“Through your muchneeded support, we hope to educate the public about our nation’s important Breast Cancer health bills,” reads the letter, thanking him for his donation. It noted that the group was not a charity — key to the FTC order against former Outreach Calling employees. And further down, it stated, “A large portion of proceeds from this campaign are used to defray the costs of fundraising.”

Santa Anita Park touts low racing deaths in '23-24; 12 horses die training
By Joe Taglieri joet@beaconmedianews.com
Santa Anita Park officials announcedMonday that with the concussion of fall and winter-spring competition, the Arcadia track has achieved a 99.97% racing safety record for horses, ranking it as the safest track of similar size and racing volume in North America.
The six-month winterspring meet concluded on Sunday, and combined with the six-week fall meet that started in late September, 6,678 horses raced on Santa Anita's main track and turf course with two fatalities, according to the track and California Horse Racing Board data.
Another 12 horses died while training at Santa Anita during the 2023-24 racing season, suffering either musculoskeletal or nonmusculoskeletal injuries, according to the CHRB. Nine horses died at Santa Anita during the same period from causes listed as "other."
Throughout each year, Santa Anita hosts on average more than 375,000 training sessions, track officials said.
"It is impossible to overstate the diligence that the entire racing community has put into prioritizing the safety of the horse above all else," Nate Newby, senior vice president and general manager of Santa Anita
Park, said in a statement.
"From the owners, trainers, jockeys, veterinarians and the hardworking men and women who care for the horses each day, everyone has done their part to make safety our North Star.
"Winter is always a challenge with weather, and we have a tremendous Santa Anita Park track crew, led by veteran Dennis Moore, whose tireless efforts and countless long days were vitally important," Newby said. "We are grateful to the CHRB for their unwavering leadership in placing the welfare of the horse first, and especially to our horseplayers, who continue to support Santa Anita Park which enable all of us to continue these industry-leading efforts."
Santa Anita officials have lauded improving horse safety as reflected by decreasing annual numbers of fatalities since 2019, when at least 42 horses died at the track. The horse deaths initiated widespread debate about safety issues at Santa Anita and horse racing in general.
“Santa Anita Park veterinarians performed nearly 6,400 examinations prior to horses working at Santa Anita since Sept. 1 of last year,” Dionne Benson, chief veterinary officer for 1/ST

Racing, the subsidiary of The Stronach Group that manages the track, said in a statement.
“The heightened scrutiny has allowed for additional opportunities for everyone to work for the best interest of the horse," Benson said. "We are pleased that since HISA adopted many of the Santa Anita Park and California protocols in the last year, the overall safety of the sport has improved throughout the country.”
Despite Santa Anita's recent safety improvements, animal-rights advocates have continued to call for an end to horse racing, as horse deaths continue at tracks throughout the U.S.
"No legitimate sport would tolerate the deaths of 13 of its athletes in 23 weeks of competition at 1 venue ... which is the same # of deaths there in the same time period in 2023," the group Kill Racing Not Horses said Monday in a social media post.
Santa Anita had 12 racing and training deaths in 2022, and 17 horses died at the track in 2023, according to CHRB records.
Racing resumes at Santa Anita Park on Sept. 27 for the five-week 2024 Autumn Meet with the inaugural California Crown event.
Pinky (A515190)
Six-year-old Pinky is the sweetest girl! This beautiful cat has the cutest cow coloring and signature pink nose. She loves getting head and neck scratches and will even lean into your hand to ask for more petting. Pinky is also a huge fan of crunchy treats – so if you’re looking for the key to her heart, it’s definitely a handful of snacks! Pinky is looking for a quiet home where she can snuggle on the couch with you, nap in a warm sunbeam, or perch on top of a cat tree and watch birds out the window. She would prefer a home without dogs and with plenty of crunchy treats! Pinky and all other cats over 6 months old can be adopted at no charge throughout June (Adopt a Cat Month)!
Boris (A514989)
Boris is the kind of dog who can find the joy in anything! At just one year old, Boris is overflowing with happy energy and can’t wait to share it with you. Boris’s motto is: “A stranger’s just a friend you haven’t met!” He’ll run up to new people to say hello, tail wagging the whole way. Boris also loves playing games in the yard, including “find it”, hopping up onto our platforms, and chasing after toys (he’s still working on the “fetch” part, but he’ll get there!). Boris often takes breaks from playing to get some all-over petting. And if you stop petting him, he’ll ask for more by getting even closer. This sweet and affectionate pup can’t get enough love! If you’re looking for a companion who brightens every day with his positive attitude and playful disposition, Boris just might be the pup for you.

Mountain lion found dead on 101 Freeway near wildlife crossing
By StaffAdead mountain lion was found Saturday on the Ventura (101) Freeway in Agoura Hills near the wildlife crossing currently under construction.
The deceased mountain lion was found in the far right lane of the southbound 101 near Liberty Canyon Road after someone reported a possible animal in the road at 4:48 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol via published reports.
The intention of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing — under construction since 2022 with completion expected by early 2026 — is to rescue the local mountain lion population from extinction, according to wildlife advocates. That could happen if the animals continue inbreeding because of the limited numbers of mountain lions in the area.
The fully landscaped

freeway crossing aims to offer roaming mountain lions a connection between the small population in the Santa Monica Mountains and the larger and genetically diverse groups of mountain lions in areas to the north.
The crossing will be the biggest of its kind in the U.S., officials said.
Many years of road
construction and urban development have proven deadly for animals trying to cross Southern California freeways and roads, resulting in disconnected habitats with a wide range of genetically isolated wildlife.
More information on the Annenberg crossing is at www.101wildlifecrossing. org.

Pasadena gets nearly $1M for
groundwater treatment
By Staff
Pasadena is getting a new facility to more effectivelydecontaminate groundwater that will be built with nearly $1 million in federal funds, officials announced.
Mayor Victor M. Gordo and city officials joined U.S. Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena, for a ceremonial check presentation Monday at the site of the future Sunset Complex Project Groundwater Treatment Facility located at West Mountain Street and Sunset Avenue.
The Sunset Complex will replace existing reservoirs with two circular concrete storage reservoirs that will meet current seismic standards, according to the Pasadena Water and Power Department. A new groundwater treatment plant will use ion exchange to remove perchlorate, "liquid phase granular activated carbon to remove volatile organic compounds" and have a disinfection system.
The new treatment system will enable PWP to utilize more of the city’s groundwater supply, and the project's emergency power generators will keep the complex operating if a power outage occurs.
PWP hosted the check presentation ceremony, which included remarks by Chu, Gordo and Acting PWP General Manager David Reyes.
“We’ve all experienced
the climate crisis firsthand with back-to-back seasons of unprecedented winter storms, following years of historic drought, heatwaves, and wildfires across our region," Chu said in a statement. "Thankfully, the City of Pasadena is rising to meet the challenge of managing, planning, and investing in
resources and opportunities for new water supplies, officials said.
“Pasadena’s local water infrastructure is vital to residents, businesses, and visitors,” Gordo said in a statement. “We are proud to partner with Congresswoman Chu on important projects like this, which will

our water systems to ensure long-term water security and climate resiliency.
Through the Community Project Funding program in Congress, I secured $959,752 for the Sunset Complex Groundwater Treatment Facility to support Pasadena as it protects our groundwater basin and provides a lasting water supply for our communities.”
PWP identified the Sunset Complex Project in its Water System and Resources Plan, or WSRP, which is the city's guidelines for long-term water resource planning for aging infrastructure, future water demand existing water
help ensure a reliable, resilient water delivery system in Pasadena today and into the future.”
As part of WSRP, officials hope the project will help bring more reliability and resilience to the city's water system. In addition to the planned groundwater treatment facility, the plan calls for groundwater well improvements and replacing two reservoirs, one of which Chu and other attendees toured following the check presentation.
More information about the Sunset Complex project is at PWPweb.com/SunsetComplex.

‘Wendy’s Peter Pan’ brings Neverland to life at Theatricum
By StaffWill Geer Theatricum Botanicum has transformed its outdoor amphitheater into the imaginary isle of Neverland for a magical production of “Wendy’s Peter Pan.” Theatricum artistic director Ellen Geer directs her “retelling” of the 1904 play by J.M. Barrie, with performances running June 22 through Oct. 4.
“This beloved, classic fairytale of a boy who refuses to grow up was written 120 years ago,” notes Geer. “Like Shakespeare, the adventures in Neverland will remain in our vocabulary and hearts forever. May our next
generation never lose the innocence of belief in other worlds and other ways.”
All the familiar characters are present as now grown-up Wendy recounts her marvelous childhood adventure to her own children. The tale comes to life on Theatricum’s wooded stage as Wendy recalls how she and her brothers flew off to Neverland with Peter Pan, cared for the Lost Boys, and crossed paths with Tiger Lily, a mermaid, Captain Hook, the pirates and, of course, Tinkerbell.
“Wendy’s Peter Pan” will run in rotation every weekend with Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s
Anew Golden Corral restaurant opened last week in Covina offering an all-you-can-eat buffet for local diners and commuters.

Tale” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Upcoming, productions of “Tartuffe: Born Again,” translated and adapted from Molière by Freyda Thomas, and “The Hispanic/Latino/Latina/ Latinx/Latiné Vote,” a new play by Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle award-winning playwright Bernardo Cubría, will join the repertory season on July 13 and Aug. 24 respectively. Unlike most theaters in the L.A. area that stage continuous runs of a single play, Theatricum will perform all five plays in repertory, making it possible to see them all in a single weekend once they are all up and running.
“Wendy’s Peter Pan” opens on Saturday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. and continues to run in repertory through Oct. 4. Tickets range from $15 to $48; premium seating is available for $60. Pay What You Will ticket pricing is available for the performance on Friday, July 26, which will also feature a prologue (pre-show discussion) from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum is located at 1419 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. in Topanga, midway between Malibu and the San Fernando Valley. The amphitheater is terraced into the hillside, so

audience members are advised to dress casually (warmly for evenings) and bring cushions for bench seating. Patrons are welcome to arrive early to picnic in the gardens before a performance. For more information and to purchase tickets, call (310) 455-3723 or visit theatricum.com.

Known as the Green Dinosaur, the fossil will be renamed via an online poll, asking voters to select from five names that were chosen by staff members, museum officials said in a statement.
After being excavated from what was a riverbed 150 million years ago during the late Jurassic period, the green bones were recently packed in multiple crates and trucked to Ontario, Canada, according to the museum. The fossil had affectionately been known as Gnatalie for the gnats that pestered the scientists and volunteers while excavating it.
The long-necked dinosaur's unusual bone

coloring is due to infilling by the green mineral celadonite during the fossilization process, museum officials said.
When the new wing, NHM Commons, opens this fall, the colossal skeleton will be the first green dinosaur skeleton to ever be mounted for public display.
The five names to vote on are: -- Gnatalie: A nod to the quarry at which the bones of the dinosaur were found and the pesky gnats
