The president of Cal State Los Angeles is demanding Friday that the protesters who have been camped on the campus for more than a month must leave.
The declaration comes two days after pro-Palestine activists occupied and extensively vandalized the Student Services Building on campus.
“The encampment has crossed a line,” Cal State Los Angeles President Berenecea Johnson Eanes said in a statement. “Those in the encampment must leave.”
Eanes also said in her statement that four people — three employees and one student — were assaulted by protesters during Wednesday’s occupation of the Student Services Building, although no other details were released.
“A trust we had in the encampment to practice nonviolence has been violated,” Eanes said in her statement to the “Golden Eagle Community” released Thursday afternoon. “Trust is a hard thing to restore, but we will do the work together.”
The protest began Wednesday afternoon as activists descended on the building that houses the university president’s office. Some protesters chained themselves together outside the main entrance as others moved inside the building. Others used patio furniture, golf carts and other materials to establish a barricade around the structure. At one point, protesters were seen rolling copy machines in front of the building’s entrance.
University officials issued a campus alert urging anyone inside the building to shelter in place, and telling others to leave the campus.
University spokesman Erik Frost Hollins told reporters Thursday that police were able to escort some employees out of the building within a few hours of the occupation
beginning. He said, “Obviously it’s a different and more dangerous situation when you have people in a multistory building.”
Hollins said Eanes was among about 12 administrators who were initially sheltering in place inside the building.
“There were a dozen, then it got down to maybe half a dozen administrators who remained in the building to work the situation throughout the evening,” he said. Eanes and the remaining administrators left the building shortly after midnight Thursday.
Around 1 a.m. Thursday, most protesters left the building voluntarily and returned to the existing proPalestine encampment on the campus. A remaining handful were coaxed out by university officials a short time later.
A criminal investigation was underway. There were no immediate reports of any arrests stemming from the extensive damage inflicted by protesters, including graffiti
on walls and furniture, shattered office windows and overturned vending machines.
A large amount of trash was strewn about in front of the building. The building’s first-floor windows and walls were sprayed with pro-Palestinian graffiti.
All classes will be held on a remote basis until further notice, the university announced.
“As you likely know, last night unlawful protesters occupied the first four floors of the Student Services Building, destroying offices, stealing property, and leaving significant damage,” Eanes said in her statement Thursday.
“For 40 days, there has been an encampment on our campus. We have been in ongoing formal and informal communication with the encampment and its advisers. I went into the encampment twice. I made significant commitments on transparency, respectful conversa-
tions, and mental health support. These are all within my authority and aligned with our first principles as a university.
“So long as the encampment remained non-violent, I was committed that the university would continue to talk.
“Last night, those involved with the encampment chose violence and destruction. Our chief concern at Cal State LA has always been the safety and security of all involved: our students, faculty, staff, public, and protesters.
“Yet,thesignificant damage to SSB will affect student-facingservices: including admissions, records, accessible technology, basic needs, new student and family engagement, Dreamer resources, and educational opportunity programs. It will take time to restore all those spaces and divert significant resources that would otherwise go to academics, student
The El Monte City Council on Tuesday commended police officers for providing life-saving aid to a boy who was choking.
El Monte Police Department Officers Raul Vega and Dennis Chiu along with Cpl. Carlos Tello responded June 3 to an emergency call and found 8-year-old Ethan Cante unconscious because his airways were blocked by a piece of candy, according to the city. Chiu provided Vega with a LifeVac anti-choking device to clear the child’s airways and save his life.
Vega credited his fellow officers and the training they received, along with a little luck for the successful use of the portable anti-choking device.
“Our police department supplied 200 of these to our patrol officers and to city employees, and this is a life saver,” Vega said in a statement. “For 60 to 70 dollars this is going to save someone’s life.”
Vega’s use of the LifeVac to revive the boy was the first time the device was used since the police department purchased the devices in April, officials said.

“I am proud of our officers who were able to utilize the device and save the life of a child in a matter of seconds,” El Monte Police Chief Jake Fisher said in a statement. “By equipping our officers with LifeVac we are taking a crucial step in improving our emergency response capabilities. Investments in tools like these are critical to our Department as our Officers are better equipped and trained to save lives in critical moments when every second counts.”
Ethan Cante and his mother Vanessa Becerra-Aguayo attended the council ceremony Tuesday evening in which Vega, Chiu and Tello received a city Life Saving Award.
El Monte police dispatchers Veronica Chacon and Sandra Gonzalez received official commendations “for their critical and professional response” as officers arrived at the scene of the emergency.
“I can’t even imagine what that call must have felt like, knowing that many of you have children as well,” Mayor Jessica Ancona told Chacon and Gonzalez. “But you sprung into action and you gave the appropriate direction that led to saving the life of this young boy.”
CoPilot analyzed national sales data to uncover the 50 top-selling used cars in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA metro area.
Analyzing the top-selling used cars in the Los Angeles metro area reveals a fascinating mix — a focus on fuel efficiency for battling traffic, a touch of luxury for a touch of Hollywood glamor and a hint of adventure for exploring the surrounding beauty. Let’s delve deeper into the trends and highlights that shape the choices of Southern California drivers — from brand preferences to pricing considerations and the subtle electric revolution!
The 50 top-selling used cars in the Los Angeles metro area
Los Angeles, the land of glitz, glam and perpetual sunshine, offers a used car market as diverse as its sprawling landscape. Whether you’re a Hollywood hopeful, a beach bum or a busy professional, there’s a pre-owned ride waiting to match your LA lifestyle.
Fuel efficiency reigns supreme. Used Toyota Camrys in Los Angeles take the #1 spot, closely followed by Honda Accords and Civics. Sedans dominate the top of the list, perfectly suited for navigating the sprawling city and crawling through rush hour.
The presence of the Toyota Prius, a hybrid hatchback, highlights a growing environmental consciousness, likely driven by rising gas prices or a desire for cleaner air.
However, LA isn’t all about practicality. The inclusion of luxury brands like BMW 3 Series, Lexus RX, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class reflects a niche market that prioritizes a touch of sophistication, even in a pre-owned car.
Interestingly, minivans like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna remain popular, catering to families who value practicality and space alongside a bit of Hollywood style.
Crossovers are the champions of versatility, offering the perfect compromise for many Angelenos. The everpopular Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V provide enough space for weekend adventures to the beach or mountains while remaining nimble for city streets. For those who need even more room, the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot provide some extra spaciousness for LA families.
By StackerThe adventurous spirit of Southern California peeks through with the inclusion of trucks like the Toyota Tacoma and Ford F-150. Popular rugged vehicles go beyond trucks, with the presence of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and Toyota 4Runner, showcasing a desire for vehicles that can handle both the daily commute and off-road excursions.
Understanding these trends empowers potential car buyers in Los Angeles to navigate the used car market with confidence. Whether you crave a fuel-efficient sedan for battling traffic, a versatile SUV for exploring the coast, or a touch of luxury for a touch of Hollywood flair, the LA used car
SonyPicturesEntertainmentWednesday announced it has acquired Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, becoming the first major Hollywood studio in 75 years to own a movie theater chain.
From 1948 until four years ago, film distributors were prohibited by federal regulators from owning a cinema chain. The rules were abolished in 2020, and Sony is now the first studio in seven decades to invest in a movie exhibition company.
Alamo Drafthouse is billed as North America’s seventh-largest theater chain, with 35 locations across the country, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and New York. The chain is known for serving food and craft beer at its theaters, and boasts a strict no-texting policy.
Alamo Drafthouse’s Michael Kustermann will
remain chief executive of the so-called dine-in movie theater chain, which is based in Austin, Texas.
“We are excited to make history with Sony Pictures Entertainment and have found the right home and partner for Alamo Drafthouse Cinema,” Kustermann said in a statement.
“We were created by film lovers for film lovers. We know how important this is to Sony, and it serves as further evidence of their commitment to the theatrical experience. Together we will continue to innovate and bring exciting new opportunities for our teammates and moviegoers alike.”
The Pasadena Public Health Department has received an elevated number of reported typhus fever infections in the city this year and advised residents on ways to prevent the spread, officials announced Thursday.
Humans get typhus from infected fleas, resulting in possible high fever, chills, headache and rash.

Usually between one and five cases are reported in Pasadena annually, but so far this year, eight Pasadena residents were diagnosed with typhus. All who had a bout with the illness have received treatment and recovered.
“Winter and early spring are generally lower risk months for typhus, with most cases being reported in the summer and fall,” Mattew Feaster, who manages the health department’s Epidemeology & Disease Control division, told the Pasadena Independent.
In Pasadena, infected fleas are primarily carried by feral cats and opossums, officials said. People who regularly interact with these animals are at risk, and pet dogs and cats that are allowed outside may pick up infected fleas and expose their human owners to insects.
While typhus is treatable with antibiotics that offer a good recovery rate,
three typhus-related were reported last year in Los Angeles County, according to Pasadena officials. Pets and animals do not become ill from typhus.
City officials advised these ways to prevent typhus from spreading:
- Reduce yard debris and trim overgrown plants and trees to discourage the presence of wild animals such as feral cats and opossums;
- do not leave pet food outdoors;
- do not provide food or water for wild animals;
- keep garbage containers closed tightly;
- seal all openings and crawl spaces under residences; and
- regularly treat pets with flea control medication
Doctors diagnose typhus according to clinical symptoms and a blood
test, officials said. The city requires local health providers to report any Pasadena residents with a suspected or confirmed typhus diagnosis within one working day to the Public Health Department at 626-744-6089 Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m., or 626-7446043 after hours.
The total annual number of cases by year from 2016 to 2024 were: 14 in 2016, eight in 2017, 20 in 2018, eight in 2019, three in 2020, eight in 2021, six in 2022 and five in 2023, according to Public Health Department data. More information on typhus prevention is available online from these government agencies: the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

erry West, a Hall of Fame
basketball icon who won an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers and was an executive during the Showtime Lakers era in the 1980s and later worked in the front office for the Clippers, has died at age 86, and his family is showing appreciation for the support of fans and friends Thursday.
According to a statement from the Clippers, West’s wife Karen was by his side.
By City News ServiceHe helped build eight championship teams during his tenure in the NBA — a legacy of achievement that mirrors his on-court excellence. And he will be enshrined this October into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor, becoming the first person ever inducted as both a player and a contributor.”
West’s wife and family issued a statement Wednesday night saying, “We are overwhelmed by the love, support, and appreciation we have received from friends, colleagues, and basketball fans around the world. Jerry took incredible pride in his life-long association with the NBA. He felt fortunate to have been a player, coach, and executive during a time of explosive growth in the league. Above all else, Jerry cherished the close friendships and mentorships he formed with teammates, coaches and players throughout his 64-year-career.
“We want to thank you, basketball fans everywhere, for supporting him. You fueled his burning desire to win — he did it for you.”
West, known as a player as Mr. Clutch, was the general manager of the Lakers from 1982 to 2000 and the Memphis Grizzlies from 2002 to 2007. He was a consultant with the Golden State Warriors from 2011 to 2017 and with the Clippers until his death. His impact on the game and the NBA was immeasurable, and his silhouette is still used as the NBA’s logo, earning West the alternate nickname “The Logo.”
“Jerry West was a basketball genius and a defining figure in our league for more than 60 years. He distinguished himself not only as an NBA champion and an All Star in all 14 of his playing seasons, but also as a consummate competitor who embraced the biggest moments. He was the league’s first Finals MVP and made rising to the occasion his signature quality, earning him the nickname ‘Mr. Clutch,’” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver posted on social media.
“Jerry’s four decades with the Lakers also included a successful stint as a head coach and a remarkable run in the front office that cemented his reputation as one of the greatest executives in sports history.
West will be inducted to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Massachusetts for a record third time in October as a contributor to the game.
“I valued my friendship with Jerry and the knowledge he shared with me over many years about basketball and life,” Silver posted. “On behalf of the NBA, we send our deepest condolences to Jerry’s wife, Karen, his family and his many friends in the NBA community.”
West was inducted into the Hall of Fame the first time as a player in 1979 and then as a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic team in 2010.
The contributor enshrinement honors his work as a general manager with the Lakers and Grizzlies, in addition to his time as a consultant with the Warriors and the Clippers.
While in those roles, West won eight championships and was twice selected NBA Executive of the Year.
“This is a hard day,” Clippers owner Steve Ballmer said in a statement. “I am honored to call Jerry a confidant, an adviser and a friend. Connie, my wife, called him my ‘basketball dad.’ He was absolutely my basketball sage: wise, loyal and so much fun. If you were in his presence, you felt his competitiveness and his drive.
“He cared about everything and everyone. From the first day I met Jerry seven years ago, he inspired me with his intellect, honesty and enthusiasm. He never stopped. I spent a lot of time with him, some of the best times of my life. He always lent an ear, and he always had a quip. He always left me laughing. I will miss him.”
West won an NBA championship as a player with the Lakers in 1972. He played in the NBA Finals nine times and lost six times to the Boston Celtics and twice to the New York Knicks. West was the MVP of the 1969 NBA Finals and is the only player to win the Finals MVP for a losing team. He averaged 37.9 points per
games in the seven-game series against the Celtics.
He was credited as the architect of the Lakers in the 1980s and 1990s during his 18 seasons as general manager, including the deal that brought Kobe Bryant to Los Angeles. Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, paid tribute to West on Instagram, posting a photo of him with Bryant with a pair of purple and gold heart emojis.
Before joining the Clippers in 2017, West spent six years with the Warriors and helped the team win titles in 2015 and 2017.
He also spent five years in Memphis’ front office, rebuilding the franchise.
“Jerry West was an incredible and unique individual, having accomplished immeasurable heights in the game of basketball,” Warriors owner Joe Lacob said in a statement.
“He reached the absolute pinnacle of the sport as both a player and execu-
tive, something few can claim in the profession. He did so much for the NBA, the game of basketball and each of the teams he was associated with during his unmatched career, including the Warriors.”
As a player, West was a 14-time All-Star with the Lakers.
On social media Wednesday morning, Lakers star LeBron James wrote, “Will truly miss our convos my dear friend! My thoughts and prayers goes out to your wonderful family! Forever love Jerry. Rest in Paradise, my guy! My mentor, my friend! Hopefully I continue to make you proud! You’re already missed!” Pat Riley, who coached the Lakers from 1981 to 1990 and was a teammate of West’s from 1970 to 1974, said in a statement, “I loved Jerry West! We loved being Lakers together; it was sacred ground. We grew in life with each other and
mourns death of James Lawson, ‘one of our nation’s noblest leaders’By City News Service
Tributescontinued
Tuesday for the Rev. James Lawson Jr., an icon of the Civil Rights Movement and the longtime pastor of Holman United Methodist Church in South Los Angeles, with President Joe Biden saying he dedicated his life to “our country’s ideals.”
Lawson died June 9 in Los Angeles after a brief illness at age 95.
“Jill and I are saddened by the loss of one of our nation’s noblest leaders,” Biden said in a statement Tuesday. “His passing before Juneteenth is a reminder that our nation’s journey from slavery to freedom started in the hearts of people like James Lawson spellbound by freedom. We send our condolences to the Lawson family as our nation mourns a man who helped redeem the soul of our nation.”
Biden noted that Lawson was born in Pennsylvania, “the cradle of our democracy,” and said he “dedicated his life to fighting for our country’s ideals.”
“As a mentor, he taught
the likes of Diane Nash, Congressman John Lewis, and countless others about the tactics and promise of nonviolence resistance,” the president said. “And as a minister, he preached about how the fight for equality, dignity, and justice for all was a divine calling. It is only fitting that Vanderbilt University now boasts the James Lawson Institute in honor of a man who was the architect of the Southern Freedom Movement and, later in life, a consistent advocate for human rights.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement June 10 calling Lawson “a civil rights leader whose critical leadership, teachings, and mentorship confronted and crippled centuries of systemic oppression, racism and injustice.”
“Reverend James Lawson Jr.’s life and legacy reverberates in the continuing movement to advance social and economic justice in Los Angeles and beyond,” Bass said. “He dedicated his life to equality and justice
and helped train a generation of national leaders including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Congressman John Lewis in nonviolent protest. These teachings changed the course of history.
“Here in Los Angeles, Reverend Lawson taught many activists and organizers and helped shape the civil rights and labor movement locally just as he did nationally.”
Bass said Lawson “was gracious enough to meet with young people we were working with in South Los Angeles and teach them about the civil rights movement while training them in non-violent protest strategies,” when help found the Community Coalition organization.
“Reverend Lawson was also an invaluable mentor to me,” Bass said. “I continued seeking his counsel throughout my time as an organizer, an activist and as an elected official. He was there for me as I know he was there for countless civic and faith leaders here
in Los Angeles who were guided and influenced by his teachings.”
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Heather Hutt, who led a street-dedication ceremony for Lawson in January outside Holman UMC, said in a statement: “Reverend James Morris Lawson was a leader of our community and world, whose messages of love and nonviolence left an indelible mark on the Civil Rights Movement and influenced many. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing, but know his legacy will continue to guide us for generations to come. His message of love will forever live on in every heart he touched. May he rest in power.”
Assemblyman Mike Gipson, D-Carson, said he was saddened by the death of the “Civil Rights Movement legend.”
“Yet as sad as I feel to lose an icon, I am in awe of such an accomplished life,” Gipson said. “It leaves a legacy including the nonviolence work of the James Lawson Institute, an immense body of writings published during his time in California, and the many ways that our community champions the cause of others’ freedom to this day. May he rest in peace.”
Author and talk show host Tavis Smiley said “we have lost a giant.”
“The ultimate teacher and practitioner of civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance,” Smiley wrote on social media. “His message resonates in a moment like this when violence abounds at home and abroad. His sobering voice will be sorely missed.”
Lawson was pastor of Holman United Methodist Church from 1974 until his retirement in 1999. A mile-long stretch of Adams Boulevard from Crenshaw Boulevard to Arlington Avenue in front of the church was co-named in January as the Reverend James Lawson Mile.
Born James Morris Lawson Jr. Sept. 22, 1928, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the son and grandson of Methodist ministers, Lawson was raised in Massillon, Ohio.
While a student at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, Lawson was drafted by the U.S. Army, but refused to serve due to his belief in nonviolence and was sentenced to two years in prison.
Released after 13 months, Lawson returned to college to finish his education, then traveled to Nagpur, India as a Methodist missionary to study the nonviolence resistance tactics developed by Mahatma Gandhi.
Lawson returned to the United States in 1956, entering the Graduate School of Theology at Oberlin College in Ohio. According to a biography from the Stanford University-based Martin Luther King, Jr. Research & Education Institute, one of Lawson’s Oberlin professors introduced him to King, who had also embraced Gandhi’s principles of nonviolent resistance.
In 1957, King urged Lawson to move to the South telling him, “Come now. We don’t have anyone like you down there.” He moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he attended Vanderbilt University and began teaching nonviolent protest techniques.
In February 1960, following lunch counter sit-ins initiated by students at a Woolworth’s store in Greensboro, North Carolina, Lawson and several local activists launched a similar protest in Nashville’s downtown stores. More than 150 students were arrested before city leaders agreed to desegregate some lunch counters.
Lawson was expelled from Vanderbilt in March 1960 because of his involve-
ment with Nashville’s desegregation movement. Lawson eventually reconciled with Vanderbilt and returned to teach as a distinguished university professor. Vanderbilt established an institute for the research and study of nonviolent movements bearing his name in 2021.
Lawson participated in the 1961 Freedom Rides which challenged segregation on interstate buses and bus terminals.
Lawson became pastor of Centenary Methodist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1962. In 1968, when Black sanitation workers in Memphis began a strike for higher wages and union recognition after two of their co-workers were accidentally crushed to death, Lawson served as chairman of their strike committee.
Lawson and King led a march in support of the strikers on March 28, 1968, which erupted in violence and was immediately called off.
In what would be his final speech on April 3, 1968, one day before his assassination, King spoke of Lawson as one of the “noble men” who had influenced the Black freedom struggle.
“He’s been going to jail for struggling; he’s been kicked out of Vanderbilt University for this struggling; but he’s still going on, fighting for the rights of his people,” King said.
shared the best and worst of times together. We can only hope there is someone we meet during a crucial time in our lives that will change you in ways you could dream about. Jerry was that person for me.
“Today’s sad, sad news about his passing brought back many of those special moments with Jerry. Those beautiful memories came in a waterfall of tears; all coming so fast, so vivid, so etched in my mind. It was like yesterday after a shootaround at The Forum that we’d hustle to Hollis Johnson’s drugstore in Westwood to eat the best burgers, drink milkshakes and savor a great custard pudding with fresh whipped cream before we headed home to nap. Then it was game time and Jerry would kick ass in a way that was so skilled and relentless.
“I was so proud to be there in his presence. I watched, I learned. He made me believe. Being in that aura of greatness was mesmerizing. I was told, ‘Pat, Just watch him and model yourself after Jerry.’ He was smart, committed, opinionated, fearless, generous, ultra-competitive, stubborn, but with great grace. These were just some of the characteristics he embedded in my psyche.
“They emerged at the right time, honed by many years of self-talking Jerry reminders. Jerry kicked down that coaching door for me and said, ‘You can do this, but it has to be now.’ He knew, then he let me coach. I thank him forever and always for giving me that opportunity.”
The Lakers posted a photo of West on social media, showing him with his jersey hanging in the background, with the caption “Honoring the legendary Jerry West.”
“Jerry West is forever a basketball icon,” according to a statement from the team. “He brought Lakers fans their first championship in Los Angeles in 1972 and was integral to another six titles during his time with us. Our thoughts are with the West family and the many NBA fans who honor his legacy. Jerry West will
always be a Lakers legend.”
Fellow Laker legend Magic Johnson posted a lengthy tribute on social media, describing the first time he met West in 1979 and how West provided guidance during his first training camp with the time, noting that he “really critiqued every facet of my game.”
“After every practice he would give me notes on how I could get better and those sessions carried over to the regular season,” he said. “Once a week we went over what I needed to improve and how I could dominate in the league. Those meetings meant everything to me because I learned so much from him.”
He added, “Beyond his basketball accolades as a basketball player and NBA executive, Jerry West was a great man, a leader of men, fiercely loved his family and friends, and despite holding jobs with other franchises, he was a Lakers fan for life. Laker Nation, the only reason we have 17 NBA championships is because of Jerry West and his expertise drafting players, trading for players, and hiring the
right coaches. Today is a sad day for basketball fans and sports fans across the globe.”
Former Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote, “The reason Jerry West is the logo for the NBA is because he embodied the qualities we admire in our best athletes: skills as a player, dedication as a teammate, and integrity as a person. He was my coach, and my adviser, but mostly he was my friend. Today, a part of the continent has broken off and we are all left a little smaller. I know I am. I especially want to send my deepest condolences to Karen and the entire West family.”
The Dodgers issued a statement on social media, saying, “The Dodgers mourn the passing of NBA Hall of Famer and Lakers legend Jerry West, an indelible figure on the Los Angeles sports landscape for more than 60 years. We send our most sincere condolences to his family and friends.”
Moments of silence in West’s memory were held before Game 3 of the NBA Finals in Dallas and the Dodgers-Texas Rangers game at Dodger Stadium.

The City Council allocated PLHA funds to establish the Residential Accessibility Modification Program (RAMP) and approved guidelines for the program. City staff were notified by the Los Angeles County Development Authority that all accessibility modification programs were subject to prevailing wages and were required to be a loan based on the direction from the state. On December 5, 2023, the City Council directed City staff to cancel the accessibility modification program due to constraints and establish a program assisting families who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
The City is proposing to cancel the accessibility modification program and establish a program assisting families and individuals who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Activities may include temporary rental assistance, rapid rehousing, and supportive/ case management services. The budget will utilize the City’s Year 3 PLHA funds totaling $254,620.
Any interested persons wishing to provide input on the proposed amendments to the City’s PLHA Program may contact the Community Development Department at City Hall by phone (626) 656-7316. Written comments may also be submitted to: City of Temple City Community Development Department, 9701 Las Tunas Drive, Temple City, CA 91780. Comments will be received through July 16, 2024.

Dr. Julio Frenk, a global health expert and current president of the University of Miami, was named Wednesday the next chancellor of UCLA, making him the first Latino to lead the Westwood university in its history.
Frenk will take over the job on Jan. 1, 2025, succeeding Gene Block, who is stepping down on July 31. UCLA Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Darnell Hunt will serve as interim chancellor until Frenk arrives.
“At this crucial moment for higher education, returning to the public sector to lead one of the top research universities in the world — including one of the 10 largest academic health systems — is an exciting opportunity and a great honor for me,” Frenk said in a statement. “I look forward to adding my lifelong commitment to public service in education and health care to the vibrant, diverse, and cosmopolitan community that is Los Angeles.”
Frenk will take over
months.
Frenk — whose father and grandfather were Jews who fled Germany in the 1930s to Mexico to escape growing antisemitism — acknowledged the issues facing the university, and institutes of higher education nationwide.
“I consider myself a boundary spanner and a bridge builder,” Frenk said. “And I know that the strength of institutions of higher learning — socially, academically and intellectually — comes from their diversity and from a willingness to cross boundaries. ...
“I do think that we’re at a critical moment in higher education. There has been an erosion of trust in institutions in general, including higher education institutions. The biggest challenge for us is to reaffirm our value to society — we have to constantly earn that trust. But the opportunity is huge.”
strength the campus has achieved under Chancellor Block and accelerate UCLA’s brilliant trajectory in service to Los Angeles, the nation, and the world.”
Block also praised the choice of his successor.
“Dr. Frenk is an excellent choice to take up UCLA’s chancellorship,” Block said in a statement.
“He is widely respected across academia and wellknown as an exceptional thinker, an administrator of considerable ability and a brilliant public health leader. UCLA is in great hands, and I am certain that our university’s star will rise even higher under him.”
Frenk, 70, will earn a base salary of $978,904.
within the UCLA College.
“As I near the end of my time as UCLA’s chancellor — a role that remains the greatest honor of my professional life — I am filled with many emotions, but above all an overwhelming gratitude for every person who has made the UCLA community so special,” Block wrote in a message to the campus community last week. “So in closing, I want to simply offer you my thanks. Thank you for your dedication, creativity, resolve and commitment to excellence. Thank you for the compassion, respect and support you have shown one another. Thank you for carrying out our university’s important mission, and
a campus that has been roiled in recent weeks by pro-Palestine protests. Block has come under fire both on campus and from as far away as Washington, D.C., over the university’s response to a pro-Palestine encampment and other protests sparked by the Israel-Hamas war that have occurred in the past few
The University of California Board of Regents approved Frenk’s selection during a special meeting Wednesday at UCLA. UC President Dr. Michael Drake hailed the choice.
“Dr. Frenk has demonstrated a powerful commitment to the health and well-being of people, institutions, and systems around the world,” Drake said. “His leadership will build on the growth and
Frenk served as Mexico’s Federal Secretary of Health from 2000 to 2006 and was credited with overhauling the nation’s health system and expanding care to millions of uninsured people. He also founded the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico and previously held an executive position with the World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
From 2009- 2015, Frenk served as the dean of faculty at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He took over as University of Miami president in January 2016.
After stepping down, Block will remain a member of the UCLA faculty. He intends to return to the lab and continue his research as a member of the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences within the David Geffen School of Medicine and in the Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology
thank you for representing the very best of public higher education.
“At UCLA, even in dark times there is still so, so much light,” he wrote.
Block noted in his message that the war in Gaza has “sown division and strife here on campus,” even leading to instances of “outright violence.”
“The war’s impact on our campus reached a crescendo in the last six weeks, and this period now looms large in UCLA’s collective consciousness,” according to Block. “I do not wish to downplay the anxiety people continue to feel, or the significant healing that we will need to do. I do believe, though, that it is important to remember that our university, our community and this academic year are not defined solely by our current, difficult chapter.”
That strife has continued to percolate on the UCLA campus, with another day of pro-Pales-
tinian protest on Monday culminating in another large-scale police response and more than two dozen arrests.
Frenk will inherit a campus filled with unrest.
A massive encampment that grew in the center of campus in mid-April was attacked by a still-unidentified group of counterprotesters and sparked hours of violence. The next night, hundreds of police descended on the campus and forcefully dismantled the encampment, making 209 arrests.
That action has been followed by accusations of unfair labor practices by unionized employees, demands for amnesty for those arrested, a congressional inquiry into the campus’ response to antisemitism, lawsuits accusing the university of failing to protect Jewish students and accusations by protesters of excessive force by campus police and interference with free- speech rights.
The university’s commencement ceremonies begin Friday, with departmental ceremonies planned throughout the weekend. It was unclear if those events will be disrupted by additional protests, as pro-Palestine activists continue to demand that the university divest from all businesses tied to Israel.
“The final few days of spring are a period of excitement and anticipation as we prepare to send
off a new class of UCLA graduates,” Block wrote in his message last week. “Reaching this milestone is a significant accomplishment at any time, but it is especially meaningful for many of this year’s undergraduates, whose senior year of high school was disrupted by the pandemic and who were not able to participate in their schools’ typical graduation ceremonies.”
When Block announced his plans last year to step down as chancellor, UCLA highlighted Block’s key achievements during his tenure, including UCLA ranking as the No. 1 public university for six years running -- up from No. 4 when he joined the university.
Block increased student enrollment by 24%, while the university became the first and only UC school to guarantee housing for undergrad students and built 15 residential buildings, according to UCLA.
Block also successfully steered the university through the pandemic. He has praised the university’s research skills that delivered five Nobel Prizes in 10 years, and nearly doubled external annual research funding, according to UCLA.
Last year, the university launched UCLA South Bay on 35.5 acres on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and UCLA Downtown, a highrise building in downtown Los Angeles.
An Orange County sheriff’s sergeant testified Wednesday he has no idea why a report he wrote of an interview with an informant got lost in the case of a murder defendant whose case has led to an evidentiary hearing into allegations of the illegal use of jailhouse snitches.
Sgt. Donald Voght took the stand Wednesday, a day after Orange County Superior Court Judge Ebrahim Baytieh finished two days of testimony in which he defended how he prosecuted Paul Gentile Smith, 64, for the killing of 29-year-old Robert Haugen in Sunset Beach on Oct. 24, 1988.
Much of Voght’s testimony focused on interviews he sat in on with inmates Jeffrey Platt and Arthur Palacios, who claimed they heard Smith confess to the killing. At issue in the case is whether they were acting as informants for law enforcement questioning Smith on the murder, which would be what lawyers call a Massiah violation.
Before heading into an interview with Platt in July 2009, Voght “never heard of the guy before,” he testified.
Sheriff’s investigator Raymond Wert was the lead in the case with Voght helping.
“I did not know Jeff Platt was an informant,” Voght said. “Honestly, I thought he was just a witness. I didn’t know he was an informant to anybody... The day that I met Jeff Platt I thought he was giving us information as a witness.” It came out years after
Smith’s conviction in 2010 when a sheriff’s log on the handling of informants surfaced that there was discussion about having Platt, Palacios and Paul Martin scheduled together to be in a dayroom of the jail with Smith to question the defendant.
“I don’t know that any of these guys were informants,” Voght said.
When asked if Wert told him about the arrangement with the informants to be in the same dayroom with Smith, Voght said “absolutely not.”
“Did you think it was important to ask him questions about (Platt’s) motivations” in coming forward to authorities, Smith’s attorney, Scott Sanders of the Orange County Public Defender’s Office asked.
“I didn’t ask him hardly any questions, maybe four or five,” Voght said. “I think he just said he thought it was wrong (what Smith was accused of doing), so, no, I didn’t think to ask him what his motivations were.”
It was the first case in which Voght worked with an informant, he said.
Voght emphasized that he did not often work with informants, but said it was important to “corroborate” what any snitch says.
“You just assumed (Platt) wanted to take a bad guy off the streets?” Sanders asked.
“Correct,” he replied.
Platt also provided information to authorities about Smith’s alleged attempt to hire someone to attack or kill Wert. At one point Platt supposedly said he would aid in that, but
Voght said he didn’t believe Platt was sincere about it.
Even though Platt provided recordings of phone calls with Smith when Platt was out of custody, Voght said he wasn’t sure whether Platt was an informant.
Baytieh testified that it appeared to him that the informants were being used to help with what is known as a Perkins Operation, which is a legal use of snitches to question a defendant when there is an ongoing crime occurring such as solicitation of a hit on an investigator.
Sanders asked Baytieh about his client’s claims that Smith knew investigators were listening in on his jailhouse calls and that he and his girlfriend Tina Smith would talk about hiring a hit man as an entertaining game between the two, but the former prosecutor said there was evidence Smith was seeking help for a hit on a witness in the case even when he was in custody in Las Vegas before he was transferred to Orange County.
Wert was concerned enough about the threat that he “put up some security cameras” to protect himself,
Voght said.
Voght said he wrote the report on the interview with Platt two months later. He said there didn’t seem to be any urgency to document the meeting.
Voght also denied any knowledge of a “snitch tank” at the Intake Release Center of the Orange County Jail.
He admitted he was confused about who would be considered a witness and who would be categorized as an informant.
“It’s easier to define what a witness was,” he said. “I never worked with an informant, so I didn’t know what a confidential informant entailed.”
Voght did recall that Smith turned to selling pornography as a means to raise money for the alleged hit.
Voght said he never spoke with Baytieh about informants in the case and said he would never keep any evidence from prosecutors.
Voght also didn’t doubt Palacios’ claim to be a “listening post” only with Smith and avoided questioning him about the murder.
When Sanders asked Voght why he didn’t dig
services or operations.”
Eanes said she was “saddened” and “angry” about Wednesday’s events.
“For all those who sheltered in the Student Services Building, who had to leave in that chaos, thank you for being brave and resilient. Thank you for showing your professionalism and care — both for each other and for our students. I appreciate your care shown even to those who pursued intimidation and destruction.
“To the three employees and one student whose assaults were reported (one as protesters gained entry to SSB, another as they were leaving, another who was surveying damage, and one accosted on a walkway) I am so sorry. Know that this will not stand.
“Campus community:
Know that we will recover from this, but also know that I am committed to doing everything we can to ensure this will never be allowed to repeat. I cannot and would not protect anyone who is directly identified as having participated in last night’s illegal activities from being held accountable.”
The Cal State Los Angeles chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine wrote on its Instagram page, which has since been taken down, that Eanes “continues to dance around and repress our divestment demands,” referencing calls for the university to halt any funding or financial support of businesses tied to Israel.
“We’ve been waiting for a response to our demands for 18 days,” according to the group. “There is no more
time to spare while families are being massacred by U.S. Imperialism with each minute that passes.”
The California State University system “does not intend to alter existing investment policies related to Israel or the Israel-Hamas conflict,” according to a statement from the Office of the Chancellor issued April 30.
“Because of state law and CSU’s investment policies restrictions, the CSU does not invest in direct stocks or equities in any companies. The system does invest in mutual funds, bonds, and other instruments.
“Through careful management of the university funds, CSU investments provide a stable revenue stream that benefits our students and faculty, and supports our critical campus
deeper to check out the claims of the snitches, Voght said, “If I as an investigator failed to do what I should shame on me...
But, no, I didn’t probe and think to ask those questions.”
Under questioning from Senior Deputy District Attorney Seton Hunt, Voght said he “never had any intentions of hiding that report” on the meeting with Platt.
“I didn’t send it over” to Baytieh, he said. “I wasn’t responsible for that.”
San Diego County Superior Court Judge Daniel B. Goldstein, who is overseeing the hearing due to the conflict with Baytieh, asked Voght that if he intended to hide evidence would he document it in the first place?
“No,” he said.
Voght confirmed for Goldstein that at the time there was only one way to file a report or evidence such as the recording of the interview, which also went missing. And there was no difference whether an informant was involved or not, he said.
Now, sheriff’s officials call it a “remedy report” instead of an evidence report.
“Why is it called a remedy report” Hunt asked Voght.
“I’m not 100% sure,” he said.
Under questioning from Goldstein, Voght said case agents and investigators helping on the case could book evidence.
“We would log it onto a computer which prints off this red tag,” he said. “That was the record, the physical record that was stapled to the piece of evidence, which was locked into storage.”
“Seems to me the case agent... has to have an evidence list to know what to share is that fair to say?” Goldstein asked Voght.
“Yes,” he replied.
“Did the homicide unit receive training on the handling of evidence?” Goldstein asked him.
“No, we never received training on how to handle evidence,” Voght said.
Voght also recalled attending a lecture led by Baytieh on training for providing evidence to defense attorneys.
“I remember Massiah being a big deal in 2015-1617,” Voght said, referring to the first informant scandal involving another Sanders client, Scott Dekraai, the worst mass killer in Orange County history.
“The first time I had ever heard of Massiah was about then,” Voght said. “ I knew the principle of Massiah, but I didn’t know the term Massiah honestly.”
Hunt indirectly asked Voght about any potential motive investigators might have had in burying evidence.
“Do you believe the threats against (Wert) by Mr. Smith caused him great anger?” Hunt asked Voght. “I believe it caused him fear,” he said. “Anger isn’t the word I would use.”
“Do you believe it was appropriate for Investigator Wert to be the case agent on a case where the defendant threatened his life?” Hunt asked Voght.
“I didn’t even think about it back then,” he said. “I had no problem with him being the case agent on that.”

“While the CSU affirms the right of our community members to express diverse viewpoints, a divestment of this sort impinges on the academic freedom of our students and faculty and the unfettered exchange of ideas on our campuses.”
One protester told KTLA5 overnight that Palestine protesters have been peaceful during their demonstrations.
“We haven’t hurt a single person the entire time we’ve been out here,” the protester — wearing a mask to cover her face and providing only her first name — told the station. “And we’ve been negotiating with her (Eanes) in good faith for over a month. She has not been negotiating with us in good
faith, that’s the bottom line. If she wants to pretend like we’re a danger to her, you know, I think it’s nefarious really. I think it’s evil.”
Police investigators were in the Student Services Building lobby Thursday morning taking full inventory of the acts of vandalism and damage perpetrated by the protesters, the beginning of a criminal investigation.
One student told reporters the protests were getting out of control.
“I just think it’s pretty selfish of them,” Gilbert Sosa said. “This campus is for everybody. They’re just taking over. I don’t think it’s very appropriate. I don’t think they’re really accomplishing anything either. I’m here, I’m paying to go to school. I’m here to learn, you know, and I can’t today
because these guys want to throw a little tantrum.”
CSU Chancellor Mildred García also condemned the actions of the protesters.
“What happened at Cal State LA yesterday was unacceptable,” Garcia said in a statement. “I want to be clear: The CSU has demonstrated that we value free speech and peaceful protest, but we do not condone unlawful acts that put people at risk. Vandalism, destruction of property, assault, looting are not free speech, they are not protected activities.
“I and my office are in close contact with President Eanes and will be providing her and her team the support they need as they assess the damage that has been done and begin to heal as a community.”
