AMurrieta-based nonprofit filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging the constitutional validity of California's so-called "transgender sanctuary law," which permits children to come into the state for gender-altering surgeries despite parental opposition or legal actions filed in other states to bar the procedures.
"Senate Bill 107 is a dangerous piece of legislation that strips the right of parents to direct the care and upbringing of their child," Advocates for Faith & Freedom attorney Mariah Gondeiro, representing the nonprofit Our Watch, said in a statement. "Parents, not the government, are best suited to decide whether their child should undergo lifealtering drugs and surgeries that
will impair their ability to become a parent later in life."
Tim Thompson, president of Our Watch and pastor at 412 Church Temecula Valley, said that SB 107, which Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law in September, flies in the face of parental rights, which he deemed sacrosanct, and therefore "is a dangerous, irresponsible law."
The bill, authored by Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, was intended to set California apart from "other states' laws that punish people for providing or receiving gender-affirming healthcare."
The legislation specifically prohibits courts in California from honoring subpoenas, extradition orders or other requests intended to prevent a minor from proceed -
ing with a surgery or treatment that "may include, but is not limited to, interventions to suppress the development of endogenous secondary sex characteristics, or to align the patient's appearance or physical body with the patient's gender identity."
The law exempts the child from the "personal jurisdiction" of a parent when the youth decides to go ahead with a surgery or mental health counseling related to transgenderism. However, the child must have established residency in California, or at least be with "a person acting as a parent" who has a "significant connection with this state" before the sanctuary component of

Trial of ‘Rust’ script supervisor's case delayed until 2024

Senate committee OKs Garcetti nomination to become India ambassador
By City News Service
In part to protect Alec Baldwin's right against self-incrimination in the criminal case stemming from the fatal accidental shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film "Rust" in 2021, a judge has delayed trial of the movie's script supervisor's civil lawsuit against the actor from May until early 2024.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael E. Whitaker signed an order Tuesday rescheduling the start of trial of plaintiff Mamie Mitchell's case from May 17 to Feb. 21, 2024. Mitchell's suit, originally filed in November 2021, names multiple defendants in addition to Baldwin. She alleges she suffered physical and emotional damages.
Mitchell was standing adjacent to Hutchins, 42, when the cinematographer was killed Oct. 21, 2021, while Baldwin, a producer and star of "Rust," was helping to prepare camera angles for a scene on the film's set near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Baldwin fired a prop gun that was supposed to contain only blank rounds, but instead discharged a lead bullet that struck Hutchins in the chest, then lodged in the shoulder of director Joel Souza, now 49.
Baldwin, 64, and 25-yearold armorer Hannah Guttierez-Reed are charged with involuntary manslaughter in New Mexico. Baldwin's lawyers had previously filed a motion stating that the actor's Fifth Amendment rights would be jeopardized in the criminal case if plain-
tiff Mitchell's lawsuit is not stayed pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.
"The bottom line is that Baldwin has a constitutional right not to testify against himself," Baldwin's lawyers argue in their court papers. "But unless this action is stayed, his lawful exercise of his constitutional rights will severely prejudice him."
Whitaker's order reflects an agreement among the parties presented to the judge that states that delaying the start of trial is in the best interests of everyone, not only because of Baldwin's self-incrimination concerns but also due to the need of the litigants to complete depositions of parties and third-party witnesses as well as to engage in "good-faith settlement negotiations."
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee
Wednesday approved former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti's nomination to be U.S. ambassador to India, sending the issue to the full Senate.
It was unclear when — or if — the full Senate will consider the nomination, which has been stalled over the past year due to lingering allegations that Garcetti ignored accusations of assault and sexual harassment against a former top aide.
According to reports out of Washington, the nomination was advanced by the committee on a 13-8 vote, with two Republicans joining Democrats voting in favor.
The committee previously approved Garcetti's nomination in January of last year, but it ran into snags over the harassment allegations involving former Garcetti senior adviser Rick Jacobs.
President Joe Biden originally nominated Garcetti for the post on July 9, 2021. After it stalled, Biden re-nominated him in January.
An investigation requested by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, last year concluded that it was "more probable than not" that Jacobs "sexually harassed multiple individuals and made racist comments towards others." It also found it "extremely unlikely" that Garcetti was unaware of the behavior, saying that "by all accounts, Mayor Garcetti is very involved in the day-today operation of his office."
The White House blasted the report, saying in a statement, "This partisan report was a hit job from the beginning, and many of the claims have already been conclusively debunked by more serious independent reports. The president has confidence in Mayor Garcetti and believes he will be an excellent representative in India at a critical moment and calls for the Senate to swiftly confirm him."
Garcetti has repeatedly denied any knowledge of alleged harassing behavior by Jacobs. Following the report's release, he said in a statement that he "strongly"
disagreed with its conclusions.
His Chief Communications Officer Dae Levine said: "No new facts were uncovered in this report, and Mayor Garcetti strongly reaffirms the simple truth that he never witnessed or was made aware of sexual harassment. The opinion reached in the report does not reflect the truth about the experiences of so many people who have testified under oath and spoken candidly to the senator's office. It is based solely on false, repackaged allegations that have been proven false by multiple unbiased investigations and reviews."
Jacobs was accused of harassment in a 2020 lawsuit filed by Los Angeles Police Department Officer Matthew Garza, who claims Garcetti witnessed the misconduct but turned a blind eye to it.
Garcetti's former communications director, Naomi Seligman, also claimed she was forcibly kissed by Jacobs and that Garcetti knew about Jacobs' alleged pattern of harassment.

"It was sold out in no time with 900 people and over $740,000 raised so far. It shows the tremendous interest in the governor's successful leadership model for his state and the nation." DeSantis held a 45-minute Q&A with a college classmate from Yale, Michael McClellan, in which he explained how Florida navigated the COVID-19 crisis and how he has tried to deal with so-called "woke" policies of corporations, among other issues, Whitaker told City News Service.

Supervisors approve agreement for Corona nonprofit to recreate Prado Dam mural
By City News Service
Qualifying for BNP Paribas Open concludes in Indian Wells
By City News Service
The Board of Supervisors Tuesday signed off on contracts between the Riverside County Flood Control & Water Conservation District and a Corona nonprofit, permitting the latter to begin the process of recreating an iconic patriotic mural on the crest of the Prado Dam spillway.
"The mural serves as a beacon of pride and patriotism for the surrounding communities," Flood Control & Water Conservation District General Manager Jason Uhley said in a statement posted to the board's policy agenda.
In a 4-0 vote without comment, the supervisors authorized the district to enter into a four-month compact with the Bicentennial Freedom Mural Conservancy, establishing that the conservancy should have unfettered access to Prado Dam and that all rights and licenses stemming from the nonprofit's work on the spillway will be reserved to the district.
Prado Dam is the property of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but the Flood Control & Water Conservation District operates within the space.
The Corps last fall initiated the removal of the nearly five-decade-old Bicentennial Mural painted on the spillway crest in celebration of America's 200th birthday in 1976.
The Bicentennial Freedom Mural Conservancy intends to create a mural that's virtually identical to the previous one, utilizing more environmen-
tally friendly products and relying on mostly private funds to complete the project.
"The mural will be restored to its bright red, white and blue hues... for another generation to enjoy," according to a district statement released in September.
The Corps has granted the district a license for repainting the mural, which is expected to require at least two months' work, entirely through volunteer labor. The new display will be permitted to remain in place for at least five years.
The Corps was impervious to requests for the original mural to remain in place, citing lead paint hazards and related reasons. Preservation advocates sued in federal court seeking to prevent the Corps from proceeding with dismantling the display, but the litigation ended in 2021 in favor of the Corps.
Efforts to have the National Park Service declare the former mural a national landmark did not gain traction. Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places Joy Beasley said in 2019 that it did not qualify for special protected status because there had been "massive over-painting, loss of original paint through normal wear, and the addition of other nonhistoric graffiti."
In 2017, the Corps received over 200 letters and a petition containing 30,000 signatures, urging the government to find exceptions that would permit the Bicentennial Mural to be

maintained.
According to the Corps, the first criterion for preservation was that the structure be at least 50 years old, and the old mural fell short of that.
Officials further stated the commemorative aspects of the original mural, which was 106 feet tall and stretched 2,280 feet across, were insufficient for federal recognition because it was created to honor one thing — the nation's 200th birthday — and that was done with celebratory intent, not because the people behind the artwork were endeavoring to create something permanent.
In July 2015, the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles federally sued the Corps to halt moves toward removing the mural. A U.S. District Court judge in Riverside issued an injunction barring any work at the site until all options for the mural's future were explored. The injunction was lifted in 2021.
The original mural, which had been situated inside the flood control channel for the Santa Ana River, was painted in May 1976, when more than 30 Corona High School students spent several weekends voluntarily working on the project.
Upon completion, it read "200 Years of Freedom," with a space depicting the Liberty Bell, followed by "17761976" painted in red, white and blue.

Tabilo was a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 winner over Zachary Svajda, a two-time U.S. Tennis Association Boys' 18 national champion who was seeking his sixth berth in an ATP Tour main draw.
Tabilo had 12 aces to seven for Svajda in the one hour, 58-minute match.
The 25-year-old Tabilo has dropped from a career-best 64th on the Association of Tennis Professional singles rankings on July 25, to 187th. He is 0-2 in ATP Tour singles main draw matches in 2023. Tabilo was born in Toronto and represented Canada throughout his junior career, peaking at 29th in the junior rankings in 2015.
Svajda, a 20-year-old from San Diego, was 227th in the rankings released Monday, one spot lower than his career best, achieved Feb. 27 after he reached the final of the Challenger Tour tournament in Rome, Georgia.
Svajda received a wild card into qualifying because he wasn't ranked high enough, as did American Tennys Sandgren, who advanced when the top-seeded player in qualifying, Serbian Dusan Lajovic, retired when he was trailing 6-2, 4-1, in a night match Monday.
Sandgren lost to Australian Rinky Hijikata, 6-3, 6-3, Tuesday. Hijikata is seeded 16th in qualifying and ranked 130th, four spots lower than his career best, which came on Feb. 13.
The 31-year-old Sandgren -- who grew up in Tennessee, where he still resides -- has not played in the singles main draw of an ATP Tour event since February 2022 and is ranked 224th after reaching a career-high 41st in 2019. He is named after his great-grandfather and not the sport he plays.
The 22-year-old Hijikata teamed with fellow Australian Jason Kubler to win the Australian Open men's doubles title, defeating Hugo Nys of Monaco and Jan Zielinski of Poland, 6-4, 7-6 (4), in the final.
Other men's winners Tuesday included Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, who defeated Italian Matteo Arnaldi, 6-4, 6-4; Chilean Cristian Garin, a 6-4, 6- 2 winner over Austrian Filip Misolic; and German JanLennard Struff, who defeated Radu Albot of Moldova, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Swan defeated Hungarian Dalma Galfi, the top-seeded woman in qualifying, 6-4, 7-6 (6). The 23-year-old Swan is 156th on the Women's Tennis Association rankings, the 24-year-old Galfi is 80th. She reached the third round of the U.S. Open and second round of Wimbledon last year.
Other women's winners included 18-year-old American Ashlyn Krueger, who defeated Magdalena Frech of Poland, 6-2, 6-0; and German Laura Siegemund, a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 winner over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of the Slovak Republic.
Tuesday's losers will receive $9,440 while the winners will earn at least $18,660.
Men's and women's main draw play and the fourth edition of the Eisenhower Cup were set to begin Wednesday. The Eisenhower Cup features a mixed doubles format for the first time in the $200,000 winner-take-all event. Scheduled participants were:
-- Iga Swiatek, who is first
in the WTA singles rankings, and will team with her Polish countryman Hubert Hurkacz, 11th on the ATP singles rankings;
-- Ons Jabeur, fourth on the WTA singles rankings, who will team with Casper Ruud, fourth on the ATP singles rankings;
-- Taylor Fritz, fifth on the ATP singles rankings; who will team with 2023 Australian Open women's singles champion Aryna Sabalenka;
-- Emma Raducanu, the 2021 U.S. Open women's singles champion, who will team with Cameron Norrie, the 2021 BNP Paribas Open men's singles champion;
-- Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 U.S. Open women's singles runner-up, who will team with Felix Auger-Aliassime, 10th in the ATP singles rankings;
-- Jessica Pegula, third on the WTA singles rankings, who will team with Tommy Paul, a 2023 Australian Open men's singles semifinalist
-- Stefanos Tsitsipas, third on the ATP singles rankings, who will team with Maria Sakkari, seventh on the WTA singles rankings; and
-- Stan Wawrinka, a threetime singles Grand Slam champion, who will team with Belinda Bencic, ninth on the WTA singles rankings.
The Eisenhower Cup will be played under the Tie Break Tens format of first to ten-point tie break matches, with an eight-team singleelimination draw.
Tickets begin at $50. Parking is free. All proceeds go to local charities, including The Champions Volunteer Foundation.

the legislation can take effect.
AMarch 21 trial date was confirmed Tuesday for three convicted felons accused in the fatal shooting of a 64-year-old man who interrupted a break-in at his Anza home, where he allegedly was cultivating cannabis for sale.
Jody Lynn Came Miller, 47, of Rancho Cucamonga, James Max Robinson, 41, of San Bernardino, and Jesse Robert Thurbush, 41, of Victorville allegedly killed James Cidney Brown in 2019.
All three are charged with murder, attempted murder, burglary, attempted robbery and false imprisonment, with special circumstance allegations of killing in the course of a burglary and killing during the commission of a robbery.
Miller is additionally charged with sentenceenhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.
During a trial status hearing at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta, Riverside County Superior Court Judge John Monterosso conferred with the prosecution and defense regarding scheduling, and all sides agreed to work on clearing their calendars for proceedings toward the close of the month.
Miller is being held

without bail at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, while her two co-defendants are each being held without bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.
According to Sgt. Wally Clear of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, the trio, and possibly others who have yet to be identified, allegedly forced their way into Brown's home in the 39000 block of El Toro Road on the night of Nov. 3, 2019.
When the victim confronted them, the defendants allegedly opened fire with handguns, killing him on the spot, according to investigators.
Clear alleged Brown was using his property to illegally cultivate mari-
juana, and the defendants evidently intended to steal raw and processed product. It is unclear how much they allegedly carried away.
The victim's remains were discovered hours later.
After Central Homicide Unit detectives searched the grounds, the illegal grow was razed, and all remaining cannabis was seized and destroyed, according to Clear.
The investigation spanned almost 18 months before Miller and Thurbush were identified as alleged perpetrators and arrested in April 2021. Robinson was taken into custody weeks later.
According to court records, all three defendants have prior burglary convictions.
The bill additionally prohibits local law enforcement agencies from responding to outof-state or international legal actions aimed at preventing a minor from going ahead with a surgery, and it allows for California courts to assume "temporary emergency jurisdiction if the child is present and ... has been unable to obtain gender-affirming healthcare."
It also prohibits insurance companies and health care providers from sharing any information with individuals or entities in other states involved in actions to quash the medical procedures sought by the child.
Our Watch's lawsuit alleges that SB 107 violates the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as well as the Full Faith & Credit Clause in Article Four, because these provisions historically affirm the rights of states to procure records, documents — and people, under extradition proceedings — from other states.
"As someone who has been harmed by these policies, it is imperative that we challenge SB 107 because it will allow vulnerable children from other states to undergo life-altering and harmful surgeries and drugs," said Chloe Cole, a plaintiff in the suit.
In its opposition to the legislation, the California Family Council wrote that most children, due to lack of maturity, are not appropriately equipped to make life-altering decisions, including regarding transitional surgery.
"The vast majority of minors with gender dysphoria desist by adulthood if they are not transitioned and given puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones," the CFC said. "Because of this, many doctors and medical professionals refuse to provide transitioning drugs and surgeries, especially on minors, knowing the long-term side effects and the lack of hard scientific evidence regarding the efficacy of 'gender-affirming' treatments."
Equality California, a supporter of the bill, wrote that "other states are attempting to classify the provision of gender-affirming healthcare as a crime warranting prison time and are threatening parents with criminal penalties if they attempt to travel to another state in order to secure ... gender-affirming care for their child."
The organization said SB 107 moved "the needle toward a California that is healthy, just and fully equal for all LGBTQ+ people."
No hearing date has been set yet on Our Watch's suit, which was filed in Riverside County Superior Court.
ship-trained attending physicians to the Inland Empire," according to an RUHS statement posted to the board's agenda.
The RUHS operates the Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where Loma Linda has engaged in resident physician rotations since fiscal year 2011-12.
The sharing program will enable physicians in residency from the county hospital to train at the Loma Linda medical campus, while new doctors from Loma Linda additionally obtain hands-on training at the Moreno Valley hospital, broadening their skill sets in the areas of cardiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, neonatal care, obstetrics, pediatrics, rheumatology and other fields, officials said.
"To achieve proficiency in these areas of specialization, resident physicians must participate in clinical experiences in various settings," according to the RUHS. "By providing rotation opportunities at its facilities, RUHS increases the likelihood that the rotating physicians will either stay and continue practicing in this area after residency, or return after further training."
The agency noted that the principal goal is "improving the health and safety of patients and the community."
Loma Linda will be providing compensation to the county for its part of the program, while the RUHS will be drawing on internal accounts to cover its expenses. No county General Fund revenue will be required, according to county documents.

Lakers retire Pau Gasol's jersey
By City News Service
The Los Angeles Lakers retired the No. 16 jersey worn by Pau Gasol at halftime of Tuesday evening's game at Crypto.com Arena against the Memphis Grizzlies, the team he began his 18-season NBA career with.
Gasol is the 12th Laker to have his jersey retired and second this season, joining the late Minneapolis Lakers star George Mikan, whose No. 99 jersey was retired Nov. 30 in connection with the Lakers' 75th season.
No Lakers player has worn No. 16 since Gasol left the team in 2014 to sign as a free agent with the Chicago Bulls.
The Lakers acquired Gasol on Feb. 1, 2008, from

Memphis along with a 2010 second-round draft choice in exchange for four players, including his brother Marc Gasol, and two first-round draft choices.
During his seven seasons with the Lakers, the 7-foot center and power forward earned three of his six All-Star Game selections, was chosen for the All-NBA second team in 2011 and the All-NBA third team in 2009 and 2010 as he helped the team to championships in 2009 and 2010.
Gasol is among 12 finalists for the Basketball Hall of Fame's Class of 2023, whose members will be announced April 1 in Houston in connection with the NCAA men's Final Four.
Re: “Gov. Newsom, Attorney General Bonta… oppose federal privacy preemption” (March 2 issue)
Nine years ago, an individual who disliked one of my opinion letters wrote a complaint to Senator Dianne Feinstein that I didn’t deserve the amount of the pension I received when compared to my duties over the years as a public servant. And he had the temerity to send a copy of his letter to my home address!
I was shocked, of course, that anyone could obtain my personal information without my permission. Up until then, I trusted that everyone’s confidential information was protected by law unless requested by government agents in their official capacity.
So, since that man was able to secure information about my career, the amount of my pension, and even my home address, I’m sure that he (or anyone for that matter) can just as easily go online and obtain my medical record…and whatever else he wants.
Need I tell you that from then on I lost all confidence
Career corner: Interview misconceptions

in my government’s ability to safeguard my privacy?
Luckily, that man who took a dislike to me was not a psychopath with intentions to harm or kill me — which he could easily have done, since he also found out where I live.
I don’t want to sound paranoid, but with all of today’s advanced technology used by our government to spy on us citizens (which is now sterilized of its sinister meaning with the bureaucratic term “privacy preemption”), I have no doubt that our government, as well as corporations and any Tom, Dick and Harry, can know more about me than I know about myself.
Thus, I fear that just like gun control laws will never stop gun violence, privacy laws will never stop anyone from gathering whatever information they want about anyone if they are determined to find it.

One of the biggest misconceptions that we have about job interviews is that they're fair. Going through an interview feels a little like taking a test at school. And, we're taught to believe that enough preparation could help you to overcome any obstacles. Being great at answering questions will help you put any objections to rest. I wish this were completely true, but there's more to the story.
Job interviews are like anything else in life. Sometimes they're fair. But often, you can't see the entire picture. Unfortunately, when you believe you're taking part in a fair process, you may put forth all of your energy in order to ace one interview. When the interview doesn't work out, we take it personally. We believe there must have been something we could have done differently. We assume it was our fault that we didn't get the job.
Sure, it's possible to mess up a job interview. It's possible to completely be rejected with the wrong attitude. But, you can also do everything right and not land the job. On the other extreme, you can land a job for virtually no real reason. I once knew someone who landed a technical computer job because they were a great golfer. It's hard to compete when you didn't know golf was a requirement.
So, where does that leave you? Does it mean that you should just give up? No, it doesn’t. But, it does mean that you have to try to separate yourself emotionally from the process. It's hard to do. I struggle with this myself. But so very often, there are things going on outside of your control that have nothing to do with you or your talent –and they often have little to do with your interview performance.
So, first, separate
yourself emotionally as much as you can. Realize that job searching is a numbers game and consider changing your approach. Rather than applying online, look for creative ways to contact the hiring manager. When you land a job interview, you should do your best to prepare. You should know your elevator pitch, why you believe you are a fit for the role, and basic information about the company. If the interviewer likes you, this should be enough preparation to get you past the first screening.
For the sake of your mental health (and being able to sustain multiple
first round interviews), you should avoid pouring your entire being into preparing for a few round interviews. I know that this is somewhat counterintuitive. But, the more time you spend focused on one interview, the more devastated you will be if you don't get the job. And let's face it, you often have to get a number of rejections before you'll get to a yes.
Realize that the process is broken; not your resume. Keep pushing ahead. After all, winning at job search is in fact a numbers game.
