State awards $196M for multifamily housing projects in

Los Angeles

Civil rights pioneer donates collection to Pomona College

The state is awarding a combined $196 million to multifamily housing projects across Los Angeles County, officials announced Thursday. The funding is part of an effort by the state to overhaul the process for housing grants. The state announced more than $825 million in funding to 58 communities, which is expected to build 9,550 homes. The projects are expected to benefit around 187,500 people in total.

Los Angeles Mayor

Karen Bass, who was alongside California Secretary Lourdes M. Castro Ramírez when the announcement was made on Thursday, thanked Gov. Gavin Newsom and Ramirez for “locking arms with Los Angeles to increase the speed and lower the cost of affordable housing constructions.”

“With more than 40,000 Angelenos living unhoused today, the time to clear bureaucratic delays at all levels of government is now,” Bass said. “We all

must act with urgency, and that’s what the state is doing with this initiative.”

Newsom’s office called the application process for housing funding through the state “needlessly complex.” But Assembly Bill 434 now allows the state to combine multiple housing applications into one process.

“As we demand more housing to be built at the local level, it is incumbent upon the state to reimagine and modernize our own

approval process,” Newsom said. “State applications that were once redundant and overly bureaucratic are now streamlined to ensure projects are not stalled in an endless bureaucracy that favored process over production.”

The new application process, which resulted in what is called the Multifamily Finance Super Notice of Funding Availability, has received more than $3.5 billion in requests from developers, according to Newsom’s office.

Civil rights pioneer Myrlie Evers-Williams has donated her collection of artifacts and documents to her alma mater Pomona College, the college announced Thursday.

Evers-Williams delivered the invocation before former President Barack Obama’s second inauguration and is the widow of NAACP official Medgar Evers, who was assassinated by a white supremacist in 1963 in the driveway of their home in Mississippi.

Evers-Williams, 89, donated thousands of items, ranging from photos of U.S. presidents to campaign materials to congressional transcripts.

“Mrs. Evers-Williams has led in so many ways through her persistence, faith and unshakeable commitment to the cause,” Pomona College President G. Gabrielle Starr said in a statement. “The College will tend to this collection to educate and encourage others to push forward on the path she did so much to create. We are honored to be entrusted with her extraordinary legacy of brilliance, strength and — yes — love.”

LA County board approves record funding for homeless programs

Following its Jan. 10 declaration of a countywide homeless emergency, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Tuesday authorized its largest-ever annual budget allocation for the county’s Homeless Initiative -- $609.7 million.

“Budgets reflect priorities and I’m pleased this year’s allocation includes funding our city partners so they have adequate resources to do their part,” Supervisor Kathryn Barger said in a statement following the vote. “I’ve consistently voiced my belief that municipalities know their communities best and can craft housing solutions developed and supported locally.”

According to the county, the 2023-24 funding allotment targets programs aimed at moving people out of homeless encampments and into housing,

while also increasing mental health and substance-abuse services for the homeless.

The allocation is an 11% increase from the previous year, and includes funding to provide supportive services for 22,130 housing units, along with more than $60 million in rental subsidies to help quickly house newly homeless people. The funding also includes support for more than 5,000 interim housing beds to help move people out of encampments.

In addition to the Homeless Initiative allocation, the board also approved nearly $77 million to support a “Local Solutions Fund” available for cities to help with clearing encampments, an action plan specifically targeting housing for people on Skid Row and an effort to dismantle inoperable RVs that are being used as housing.

“We are directing an unprecedented amount of funding to our efforts to address the homelessness

crisis, but money alone isn’t enough,” Board Chair Janice Hahn said. “More important is putting our resources

behind the right strategies, investing in interim housing and supportive services so we can be better equipped to

move people out of encampments and indoors, and acting with the urgency this crisis demands.”

El Monte officials to heighten regulation of street vendors

The El Monte City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution that set guidelines for the enforcement of existing laws regarding public rightof-way obstructions and fire hazards associated with street vending.

The council aims to bolster the city’s ability to enforce local public safety laws in order to address health, safety and welfare concerns that have increased in recent years due to unpermitted vendors who sell food curbside or on sidewalks.

“We have seen the tragedy that can unfold if a vendor is encroaching the

public right-of-way, as last year, a vehicle plowed into a Pomona vendor, causing death and injury,” Mayor Jessica Ancona said in a statement. “We do not want a preventable tragedy to occur here, which is why we have been taking an active approach to educate our vendors, and enforce our public safety laws to keep everyone safe.”

The resolution took effect immediately and authorized the El Monte’s enforcement officers to:

-- order vendors to “cure” or remove a fire hazard or obstruction;

-- issue a warning or administrative citation; and

-- impound equipment that creates a fire hazard or obstruction, if a vendor fails to cure or remove the item.

Vendors can reclaim impounded equipment within 60 days, but after 60 days unclaimed equipment will be forfeited, according to the city’s announcement.

Amendments and Codes the city of El Monte will enforce include:

-- 2022 California Fire Code Title 24, Part 9, Section 1.11.2.1 Gives enforcement powers to both the fire chief and chief building official; and

-- California Fire Code Title 32, Section 104.5.1 allows county fire officials

to authorize the El Monte Police Department to enforce the LA County Code.

-- Section 307.6 of Title 32 of the Los Angeles County Code states: “A person shall not build, light, maintain, or cause or permit to be built, lighted, or maintained, any open outdoor fire or use or cause or permit to be used, any open outdoor fire for any purpose” unless they have city-or county-issued permits or are specifically exempted.

-- 2017 LA County Fire Code and the 2016 California Fire Code authorizes the city to “adopt additional regulations relating to fire protection and fire safety.”

El Monte officials will also enforce the Americans with Disabilities Act to ensure that sidewalks are not obstructed.

“Any individual or business found obstructing the public right-of-way or violating the CA Fire Code without proper permitting will be at-risk of having their equipment impounded by a City Enforcement Officer,” according to the city’s announcement.

“We are proud of the culture and entrepreneurship of our vendors who are legally permitted to vend in our City. Unfortunately, we have those who do not have the appropriate permits and

are not following specific operation and safety requirements,” El Monte City Manager Alma Martinez said in a statement. “This resolution serves as a crucial step in enforcing the City’s existing laws around public safety, promoting a safe and accessible environment for vendor’s and the public, and educating our vendors on the guidelines and permits required.”

Ancona added that the city has hosted workshops to educate street vendors about the permitting process.

“We will continue to support our vendors who abide by all the general laws,” the mayor said.

Governor Gavin Newsom wants “champions of climate action” to apply for the California Climate Action Corps paid service program which began recruitment last week.

“Tackling the climate crisis takes partners at all levels, and the California Climate Action Corps is mobilizing energized Californians all across our state to drive climate action in ways never seen before,” Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “California’s climate action is just getting started, and it starts with you. Together, we’ll achieve the climatefriendly future all Californians deserve.”

Members of the Climate Action Corps mobilize their communities through volunteer activities, and educational projects that focus on “urban greening, wildfire resiliency and organic waste and edible

food recovery,” according to the state’s announcement.

“There is incredible power in service and our California Climate Action Corps gives fellows the opportunity to harness that power to directly address the impacts of climate change,” First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom said in a statement. “The Governor and I are exceedingly grateful to those who answer the call to serve their communities, and we are excited to see them take meaningful action on behalf of our state and our planet.”

The California Climate Action Corps is the nation’s first state-level service organization that is tasked with empowering state residents to take effective action toward protecting their homes, health and communities against the most severe impacts of climate change, according to the state. The program is led by the Office

of the Governor’s California Volunteers.

“We want to channel the energy of those passionate about fighting climate change into paid service to help communities address this existential threat,” California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday said in a statement. “Our California Climate Action Corps Fellows are doing critical work, engaging community members and inspiring us to do more.”

AmeriCorps California members receive $30,000 for serving 1,700 hours over an 11-month period. Corps members also qualify for $10,000 in education awards that can apply to student debt or go toward college tuition and expenses.

A summer fellowship is also available for two-month positions that pay $5,294 plus a $1,374 education award.

Members of the 2023-24 California Climate Action

Corps program serve from Sept. 18, 2023, to Aug. 15, 2024, in communities statewide. Summer fellows serve 300 hours from June 5 to Aug.

4. From 2021 through 2022, the California Climate Action Corp Fellowship noted these achievements:

-- 147,072 trees planted, maintained, or given away.

-- 1.6 million pounds of food or organic waste diverted from landfills.

-- 1 million pounds of recovered food distributed to people in need.

-- 17,770 volunteers engaged for 54,220 hours of climate action.

-- 52,002 people engaged through climate-related education and outreach.

-- 172 acres, 85 sites, and 36 homes/structures treated for climate resiliency.

Alec Baldwin sued by family of cinematographer killed in ‘Rust’ shooting

The parents and sister of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was fatally shot when a prop gun wielded by Alec Baldwin discharged on the set of the film “Rust,” sued the actor and the film’s production company Thursday.

The Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit comes months after a separate legal action filed by Hutchins’ husband was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount, with a stipulation that the filming of “Rust” would continue with Matthew Hutchins serving as

a producer.

“It’s clear to us that the relationships of all of our clients have been damaged and that they will not be able to enjoy life in the same way as they did when their precious Halyna was alive,” attorney Gloria Allred said at

a news conference announcing the lawsuit. “Halyna was the light in their lives.”

Baldwin has repeatedly denied culpability in Hutchins’ death, which

New bill would make California school lunches healthier

Poll data shows LA County residents’ opinions on climate change

Starting next year, school lunches in California could get a lot healthier if a new bill passes to set guidelines for added sugar.

Senate Bill 348 would limit the amount of added sugar to 25 grams a day.

Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, authored the bill to improve the quality of school lunches, as California now provides two free meals a day to all public school students.

“For many of these kids, that’s more than half the calories they’ll consume in a day,” Skinner pointed out. “We need to make sure that our meals are as healthy as possible and don’t contrib-

ute to chronic diseases like diabetes.”

The Biden administration unveiled new guidelines for sugar, salt, fat and whole grains, which will be phased in over the next few years. It marks a reversal from the Trump administration policy, which argued stricter guidelines do little and generate more waste if children reject the healthier options.

Skinner noted the bill also directs the state to study whether kids in school currently have sufficient time at lunch to eat.

“My bill asks to get the data on whether we are providing adequate time for children to eat,” Skinner

explained. “And if not, what adjustments would we make?”

According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 4 million Californians have diabetes and another 10.3 million have prediabetes.

The bill does not address food sold in vending machines or at school events.

According to the Pew Research Center, about two-thirds of Americans feel the federal government is not doing enough to counteract the effects of climate change. While a majority of U.S. adults acknowledge climate change to be a real issue, there is less consensus in regards to what measures to take to address the worsening climate crisis.

Solutions such as planting more trees to absorb carbon emissions garnered widespread, bipartisan support. Approval for taxing corporations based on their emissions output or introducing stricter emissions standards for vehicles, on the other hand, seemed to fall along party lines, with 86-89% of Democratic-leaning respondents supporting those measures, versus 52-55% of Republicanleaning respondents. Attitudes toward climate change policies are split by more than mere political party affiliation, however.

Other important demographic factors include generational differences, gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic situation, and proximity to a coastline where natural disasters have increased in frequency. Economic reliance on fossil fuels also plays a large role in whether people support or oppose climate change measures on both a local and federal level.

‘Rust’ shooting

occurred Oct. 21, 2021, inside a church building on the Western set of “Rust” outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. Baldwin was wielding a prop gun, helping set up camera angles for an upcoming scene, when the weapon discharged, killing Hutchins, 42, and wounding director Joel Souza.

Baldwin has insisted that he was told the gun wasn’t loaded when it was handed to him. He also contends that while he pulled back the hammer of the weapon, he never pulled the trigger.

Regardless, the actor was charged last month with involuntary manslaughter, as was the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed.

Baldwin’s attorney, Luke Nikas, previously called the charges “a terrible miscarriage of justice.”

“Mr. Baldwin had no

reason to believe there was a live bullet in the gun — or anywhere on the movie set,” Nikas said. “He relied on the professionals with whom he worked, who assured him the gun did not have live rounds. We will fight these charges, and we will win.”

The new lawsuit was filed Thursday on behalf of Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovey; father, Anatolii Androsovych; and younger sister, Svetlana Zemko. All three are Ukrainian citizens, living near Kiev.

“The events that led to the shooting by Alec Baldwin of a loaded gun constituted intentional acts and/or omissions, without any just cause or excuse, by him and the producers of ‘Rust,”’ the lawsuit states. “Mr. Baldwin chose to play Russian Roulette with a loaded gun

without checking it and without having the armorer do so. His behavior and that of the producers on ‘Rust’ were intentional acts and/ or omissions, without any just cause or excuse and with utter disregard of the consequences of said acts and/or omissions.

“The fact that live ammunition was allowed on a movie set, that guns and ammunition were left unattended, that the gun in question was handed to Alec Baldwin by the assistant director who had no business doing so, and that safety bulletins were not promulgated or ignored, coupled with the fact that the scene in question did not call for a gun to be fired at all, makes this a case where injury or death was much more than just a possibility — it was a

likely result.”

The suit alleges battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and loss of consortium. It seeks unspecified damages.

Gutierrez-Reed, who is also among the defendants in the lawsuit, has denied wrongdoing in Hutchins’ death, saying through her attorneys that she repeatedly pushed for additional firearms training on the set, and that producers forced her to focus more on props than on her duties as an armorer. She also said film producers failed to notify her that Baldwin was using a gun while helping to set up camera angles, so she was never called into the church set to oversee the weapon, which was handed to him by assistant director David

Halls.

While Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed are both facing involuntary manslaughter charges in New Mexico, Halls was given a plea deal — pleading no contest to a charge of negligent use of

a deadly weapon. The deal, which still needs judicial approval, calls for him to receive a suspended sentence and six months probation. Baldwin and GutierrezReed could both face up to five years in jail if convicted.

Disney slashing 7,000 jobs as part of $5.5B cost-cutting move

Vision experts warn of dangers of excessive screen time

The Burbank-based Walt Disney Co. will slash 7,000 jobs as part of a $5.5 billion cost-cutting effort, CEO Bob Iger announced Wednesday.

The possibility of layoffs at Disney has been rumored for weeks, with Iger regaining his footing in the CEO’s office following the surprise ouster of CEO Bob Chapek in November.

Iger broke the news during an earnings call Wednesday afternoon, following the release of the company’s first-quarter earnings report.

Iger said he is targeting $5.5 billion in cost savings “across the company.”

“To help achieve this we will be reducing our workforce by approximately 7,000 jobs,” he said. “While this is necessary to address the challenges we are facing today, I do not make this decision lightly. I have enormous respect and appreciation for the talent and dedication of our employees worldwide and (am) mindful of the personal impact of these changes.”

No details were immediately released on where the layoffs would be made, or how quickly.

Iger said the company’s organizational structure was being changed, with the company being divided into a trio of divisions -- Disney Entertainment; ESPN; and Parks, Experiences and Products.

The move is an undoing of the changes that Chapek instituted when he took over the company three years ago.

Iger said the restructuring will return “greater authority to our creative leaders” while also making them “accountable for how their content performs financially.”

“Our former structure severed that link and must be restored,” he said. “Moving forward, our creative teams will determine what content we’re making, how it is distributed and monetized and how it gets marketed.”

Americans spend almost 13 hours a day using digital devices, and experts said it has the potential to strain your eyes and lead to serious health problems down the road.

Blue light comes from the sun but also from digital screens, and some medical professionals say too much of it can lead to scratchy or itchy eyes, tearing up, problems focusing, and headaches.

Dr. Scott Edmonds, chief eye care officer for UnitedHealthcare Vision, recommended the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away from the screen at something 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds.

“It takes you away from the blue light, so your retina can recycle,” Edmonds explained. “It also takes the strain off your convergence muscles, the muscles that turn your eyes in to keep them focused on the screen. When you look at 20 feet, your focus goes to rest, your converging muscles go to their resting point, and you get 20 seconds away from the blue light.”

He also recommended adults, starting in their 20s, should get a baseline eye exam, so they can measure changes in the future. Ultraviolet light is damaging to the retina and over time and is thought to contribute to age-related macular degeneration.

Edmonds added experts are concerned blue light may be just as damaging.

“Blue, we always thought, was safe because it’s visible,” Edmonds acknowledged. “It may also be causative because it’s so high energy and because these new sources admit such high levels of the blue light.”

Dr. Raj Maturi, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, advised frequent breaks from the screen and turning them off well before bedtime to improve sleep.

“We get tired, our brain is not trying to slow down, and we don’t sleep well,” Maturi pointed out. “An excess amount of blue light at night can also decrease the amount of melatonin that our body produces, and therefore affect how quickly and how easily we fall asleep.”

California Public Utilities Commission probes gas price spike

Gas bills jumped by hundreds of dollars over the past few months for many Californians - and on Tuesday, the California Public Utilities Commission held a hearing to find out why.

Some of the reasons cited - high demand during cold weather, and the failure of utilities to store enough gas for the winter or hedge against problems with interstate pipelines.

Heidi Harmon, former mayor of San Luis Obispo, applauds Gov. Gavin Newsom’s call for a federal investigation into possible market manipulation.

“Why did gas prices go up so much, in such a short period of time?” asked Harmon. “What’s really

going on there? And what is the remedy, and who needs to be held accountable?”

Prices are now coming down, but the CPUC said the price of natural gas on the West coast peaked in December - at eight times what people in the Southeastern U.S. were paying.

The agency voted to accelerate a tax credit for millions of Californians that will take $90 to $120 off their gas bills in March.

Dominic Frongillo, executive director and co-founder of the group Elected Officials to Protect America, said he is convinced that the best way to protect people’s pocketbooks and the climate - is to transition away from oil and natural gas.

“The fossil fuel indus-

try’s volatility - and collusion, in many cases - is causing prices to spike,” said Frongillo. “And the only way to end this is to accelerate our transition to 100% clean energy.”

More than 440 California elected officials have signed an open letter to the governor, asking for a plan to phase out oil-and-gas production in the state.

Off-duty OC deputy dies in Elsinore vehicle crash

The collection will be preserved for academic access, and eventually for public access, through the Claremont Colleges Library, where archivists will organize and catalogue the material that spans six decades.

The year after her husband was killed in 1963, she moved with her three children to Claremont and enrolled at Pomona College. She ran for U.S. Congress two years after graduating from college and helped launch the National Women’s Political Caucus, taking on prominent roles in Southern California.

She continued to seek a conviction of her husband’s assassin, which came in 1994, more than 30 years after her husband’s death. It was the subject of the movie “Ghosts of Mississippi.”

She was elected to serve as chair of the NAACP in 1995.

In 2012, Evers-Williams was the first woman to give the invocation before a presidential inauguration

Pomona College

before millions of people across the country and the world. She was later portrayed by Jayme Lawson in the movie “Till” in 2022.

“I’m thankful for my life, including all of the hardships,” said EversWilliams, who turns 90 on March 17 and is retired and living in Southern California. “I have learned so much. I have learned tolerance. I have learned love, genuine love of people. I have learned how to get knocked down and get back up without blaming anyone.”

The collection includes photos of Evers-Williams with presidents John Kennedy, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, buttons and pamphlets from her 1970 run for Congress, transcripts and correspondence from her 2007 testimony before Congress, and correspondence related to her preparation from the 2012 Obama inauguration.

“God has given me the ability to overlook all of the hurts, harms and dangers and look toward the future and what that could bring

and what I might contribute to that future. I’ll leave it at that,” she said.

The collection contains personal items, her Pomona College ID card, a hard hat from her time as a Los Angeles Public Works Commissioner and the dress she wore while performing piano pieces at Carnegie Hall. The collection focuses on her life after moving to California in 1964.

She graduated from Pomona College with a degree in sociology in 1968 and credits her college experience with changing her life.

“I don’t want to get too emotional,” EversWilliams said. “But it was Pomona College, it was the teachers here who helped me move ahead and come out of this feeling of drowning * And it was my being here at Pomona with the instructors here and the other people who did not smother me. They gave me space. But they surrounded me by love, understanding and saying, ‘Yes, you can.’”

Funeral services were pending Friday for an off-duty Orange County sheriff’s deputy who was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Lake Elsinore.

The fatal crash occurred about 5:15 a.m. Thursday in the 25000 block of Railroad Canyon Road, near Canyon Hills Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Fire officials said paramedics reached the location a short time later and pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Video from the location showed a vehicle that appeared to have struck a tree in the roadway median. It was unclear what caused the crash.

Orange County officials identified the deputy as Brian Haney, who worked in the San Juan Capistrano area and was on his way home when the crash occurred. Officials said he had a wife, Leslee, and a month-old son, Cole. Haney’s age was not immediately available.

“I’m grateful for his

service, and my heart goes out to Deputy Haney’s loved ones,” Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley posted on social media. “His young family will need our strong community support through the grief.”

Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said Haney was hired by the department on Aug. 19, 2016, working stints at the Theo Lacey Jail and then in San Juan Capistrano, where he was a member of the Critical Incident Response Team.

“His brothers and sisters in our department described him as a quick learner, hard worker and team player,” Barnes said. “He was known for his infectious smile, humorous and timely wit, and love for his peers.”

Haney was also a member of the Air Force Reserve, Barnes said

“Our focus will be on Brian’s loved ones who lost a husband, a father, a brother, and a son this morning,” the sheriff said. “We are also focused on our department

family who are recovering from our loss of a partner.”

San Juan Capistrano Mayor Howard Hart wrote online that he was “shocked and deeply saddened” at Haney’s death.

“I am especially devastated to learn that he leaves behind a loving wife and a newborn baby to whom he was returning home after protecting and serving our community when this terrible accident occurred,” Hart wrote. “I know my San Juan Capistrano neighbors will join me in prayers of comfort and support for Deputy Haney’s family and loved ones.”

Dozens of the fallen lawman’s comrades gathered at the crash scene and saluted as his body -- draped in an American flag -- was removed from the vehicle and placed into a hearse. Just after 11 a.m. Thursday, a law enforcement procession began, transporting the deputy’s body to the Riverside County coroner’s facility in Perris.

LA Mayor Bass signs executive directive to use city property for housing

Metrolink train, car collide in Covina; 2 injured

Mayor Karen Bass signed an executive directive Friday aiming to maximize the use of city-owned property for housing.

This is the third executive directive that Bass has issued since taking office attempting to address the city’s homelessness crisis, over which she declared a state of emergency as her first official act.

The directive seeks a report within 20 days of a list of all city- owned properties that are vacant, surplus or underutilized. Mercedes Marquez, the mayor’s chief of Housing and Homelessness Solutions, will then assess each site’s potential to be used as housing or shelter for unhoused people. Within 30 days of that assessment, Bass’ office will begin designating sites where new housing would be available.

The directive also exempts housing built on such sites from certain city code regulations, and it also waives site plan review and approvals, as well as minimum parking requirements, for temporary or permanent housing with on-site supportive services.

“I am making sure that the city of Los Angeles holds nothing back when it comes to bringing people inside and providing them with the support they need to stay inside for good,” Bass said. “To save lives, restore our neighborhoods and house Angelenos immediately, we must urgently prioritize underutilized existing city-owned property.”

Bass’ first two executive directives aimed to streamline the process for approval of affordable housing projects and launched a program seeking to bring residents of encampments indoors.

Whether to continue the state of emergency -- which must be ratified by the City Council every month -- will be evaluated by several indicators of progress, including the number of encampments and housing placements, and how much more flexibility city departments are allowed through the declaration.

There are an estimated 41,980 unhoused people in the city of Los Angeles, up 1.7% from 2020, according to the latest count by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.

Acollision involving a Metrolink train and a car in Covina Friday left two people injured. Paramedics were sent to North Barranca Avenue and East Front Street about 10:25 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

One person was injured in the car and another person was injured on the train, according to the fire department and Metrolink. Both were taken for hospital treatment, the fire department reported, but there was no immediate information on their conditions.

Train Number 308 on the San Bernardino line had departed from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, and the collision occurred between the Covina Station and the Pomona North Station, according to Metrolink.

Train 308 was returned to the Covina Station, and accommodations were made for alternate transportation for the passengers, according to Metrolink. The track was closed while an investigation was conducted.

LA County to offer same-day Valentine’s Day marriage licenses/ceremonies in Norwalk

Valentine’s Day is less than a week away, and the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/ County Clerk’s Office is gearing up for a busy day of lovers hoping to tie the knot on Feb. 14.

Same-day marriage licensing and civil wedding ceremonies will be offered only at the county clerk’s Norwalk headquarters at 12400 Imperial Highway. The services will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

To expedite the same-day

processing, couples are urged to fill out a marriage license application online in advance at https:// marriage.lavote.net/MLS.

People hoping for a same-day ceremony should anticipate a crowd. According to the clerk’s office, the county conducted 152 same-day ceremonies at the Norwalk office on Valentine’s Day 2020, the last time they were offered. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, a normal day at the Norwalk office would

see about 30 ceremonies per day, according to the clerk’s office.

Appointments will be required at all of the other Registrar- Recorder/County Clerk branch offices on Valentine’s Day. A prepurchased marriage license is required to make an appointment.

The county charges $35 for a civil wedding ceremony. A marriage license costs $91, but a confidential license costs just $85.
