In 2021, the initiative donated 9 million meals nationwide and the 2022 goal is to provide 14 million meals. The main event, “A Magical Night to Fight Hunger” is an annual dinner hosted in the One Pasadena courtyard on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. The $100 per person three-course dinner under the stars will include dishes and a drink by Sushi Roku as well as a magic show by local illusionists Elizabeth Messick, David Stryker, John Accardo and Griffin Barry. “The $100 that we collect from our customers that attend will be 100% donated to CoreGiving which donates 100% of every single dollar that is received back to the communities,” Mahtani added, “We really hope to rally our community together and come behind this initiative to donate as much as possible for our friends and neighbors in need.”To this end, Sushi Roku’s Pasadena location has committed the service at cost so that 100% of the proceeds go to Core Giving’s food insecurity funding. Guests can expect their signature fusion of Japanese cuisine with Latin and European twists. Sarah Hester, general manager for the restaurant, is happy for Sushi Roku to provide the dinner for its second year. “Providing food and being able to help fight hunger is something that's very, very important to us, especially when it comes to children. You know, we never ever want to see a hungry child. So if there's anything we can do to participate in, stopping that we will definitely be a part of that,” she said. Every Saturday from 12-5 p.m., visitors can donate nonperishable food items to The Giving Table located on Douglas Avenue. One of the six chairs seated at the table will be white, to remind donors of children experiencing hunger.

Tim Nistler has worked as the director of the food pantry for 10 years but noted that in the past two there has been an increased need in the commu nity. His aim is to keep ahead of the demand so that anyone who asks for assistance receives it in abundance. “We received 9,000 or 10,000 pounds of food today. We might not use all of that next week. That was just what we got in today. And we'll use a lot of it but my hope is to always have extra in the stockroom,” he said. “We're not going to turn anyone away. I would like people to come when we're open, but if they don't know or they forgot, (or) they haven't been here in a while. We're gonna make sure they get food and try to remove that one hurdle they'reAfterfacing.”theonset of COVID19, 50.3% of adults who experience food insecurity have children in their house holds and 35.6% are single parents, according to a 2020 USC study. With the onset of the pandemic, Nistler saw an increase of about 100 families in need of food, averaging today at 440 per week. This need, Nistler noted, does not appear to be decreasing anytime soon. “A lot of it is still dealing with high food costs,” Nistler said, “The gas prices have dropped a bit, but they're still high, and then also probably some of the issues surround ing rent moratoriums going away. Any relief they had for rent or some of those related monthly expenses — that's kind of gone away so every thing is just back in full force. It's like right in all of our family's faces. And so they need places like Friends in Deed.”The same study found that the highest rates of food insecurity were in East L.A. (21.8%), San Gabriel Valley (17.9%), Metro L.A. (17.4%), and South L.A. (15.8%). The average rent in Los Angeles is over $2,700 while the national average sits at $1,700, accord ing to Feedingrentcafe.com.America cites that children facing hunger are more likely to be hospi talized and face higher risks of health conditions like anemia and asthma. This puts those affected at higher risk should they contract COVID-19. Hunger in children is also linked to depression, mood, behavior, substance abuse disorders, and reduced learning and productivity. Because this issue is faced by people of all ages, One Colorado will also educate children on nutrition, hunger, and food insecurity through a complimentary hands-on activity during “Feed the Plate,” on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 3 to 5 p.m. Food donations are also welcome during this event. Nistler and others on the Friends in Deed team will have a booth with information about its many services.“People that need assis tance, whether it's food assis tance, or any kind of social services, assistance, or maybe homeless in some cases, they're just like us. They have children, they have aunts and uncles and grandparents and newborns and pets and they need to take a shower and brush their teeth and go to school and go to work. They're just like all of us, and we might not know that the person next to us is visiting a food bank or needing that assistance,” added Nistler, “And if we can start there, then I think that opens us up to to be more understanding of our commu nity.”The Pantry is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friends in Deed accepts donations Fridays and Satur days only, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations of food, toilet ries and water are accepted. Alhambra - When you decide to sell your home, setting your optimal asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Price is of ten the first thing a prospective buyer sees, and many homes are passed over as “not in our price range” before the home even has a chance of being shown. Your asking price is often your home’s “first impression,” and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it’s imperative that you make an excellent first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds, and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a homeseller as pricing too low. Comparing against what other homes in your neighborhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and by itself is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recently study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled “Homesellers: How to Get the Price You Want (and Need).” This report will help you understand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken together, this information will help you price your home to sell fast, and sell for top dollar. To order your FREE Special Report, call toll-free 1-888-3004632 and enter 1016. Courtesy photo S ixteen people have been charged in an alleged massive elec tronic benefit transfer fraud scheme in which funds were siphoned off that were intended for families in need, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced Tuesday. Prosecutors say the case involves the theft of private account information of California EBT card holders, the creation of illegal, cloned cards with victims' account information and the withdrawal of large cash amounts from those accounts at ATMs. That left legitimate cardhold ers without funds in their accounts when they would later try to make purchases, according to the District Attorney's Office. "Stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars intended to feed children and families is nothing short of disgusting," Gascón said in a statement announcing the charges. "Let this be a warning to those who wrongly believe they can steal from the taxpayers of California without consequence that we will work with businesses and law enforcement to identify and stop these organized criminalThoseoperations."charged are: Nicolae Petrache, 48; Dumitri Florin, 47; Stefan Marin, 46; Marius Gavrilescu and Eduard Bobol, both 45; Cristian Moldova Remus, 43; Viorel Luchian, 41; Nikoli Kostaki, 35; Andreas Graagand, 34; Anca Cretu, 33; Stefan Gunar, 32, Fabi Marconi, 30; Andrei Birau and Nistea Ionutflorin, both 29; and Mayra Cardona and Antonio Bergomi, both 28. All of the defendants pleaded not guilty Tuesday and were released on elec tronic monitoring, according to the District Attorney's Office.
The charges stemmed from an investigation by the Southern California High Tech Task Force, which includes the District Attor ney's Office's Bureau of Investigation's Cyber Crimes Section, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Depart ment's Fraud and Cyber Crimes Unit, and the Los Angeles Police Department's Commercial Crimes Division, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Inspector General. Officials also seized $130,000 in cash and more than 300 cloned EBT cards with an estimated value of $400,000, according to the District Attorney's Office. The task force also worked in conjunction with the California Department of Social Services, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services and numerous financial insti tutions, including Bank of America's Global Protective Services Team.

Monrovia Old Town report: Hot days + hot rods = cool summer fun
he dog days of summer sure aren’t messing around this year. I’m not sure if an egg will actually cook on the ground, but it’s hot as the devil’s b… reath out there. If you can bear to leave your air-condi tioned homes, there is much fun to be had in Monrovia. A little something for everyone, if I do say so myself. First and foremost is the 31st Annual Street Rods Forever Car Show. This is an absolute MUST-see! The only thing hotter than this weather are these cars! Blocks and blocks of hot rod and classic cars that are simply gorgeous! Thirty-eight years ago, a group of guys with cool cars got together and decided to form a club for like-minded car enthusiasts. There were only three rules: no dues, no rules and no women. Over the years, Street Rods Forever has raised thousands of dollars for local charities, such as the Boys and Girls Club, City of Hope, MUSD, the Foothill Unity Center and more! They are such a wonder ful community partner. The event starts at 9 a.m., on Myrtle, but the cars are set up as early as 7 a.m. if you want to try to beat the heat. Go out and support this event. Show some M-town love for this fantastic event. Sadly, the Monrovia Old Town Derby will not be happening this year, in conjunction with the car show. Cross your fingers that we get that back for next year.On Sept. 24, from 4 p.m. through 8 p.m., do not miss the Monrovia Beer, Wine & Music Festival at Library Park. There will be tastings from local brew masters and wineries. There will be food trucks and lots of entertain ment. The tickets are $40 and can be purchased at the door or at monroviacc.com There are also designated driver tickets available for $15. Twenty-one and over ONLY so do not bring your kids or your pets unless they are regis tered service pets. The beer & wine will be all the emotional support you need. If you go, stop by Over Town Brewing Co. Yours truly will be pouring the most deli cious of all beers! There is free parking throughout town, and do not forget to download the Lyft app, in case y’all imbibe a bit too much. Also, I am not a huge fan of food trucks when we have so much to choose from in Old Town.

T he global communi ty is confronting a number of unprec edented crises: from the ongoing challenge of COVID-19 variants and stalled efforts on climate change, to supply chain disruptions and Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Now more than ever, China’s increasing rhetorical and military intimidation is jeopardiz ing regional peace and stability. All these will impact security and wellbeing of the world. As the UN members meet again in New York this year, it is worth reminding these leaders that all people— including the people of Taiwan—deserve to have their voices heard and to be part of the collaborative effort to tackle these chal lenges for the global good. A beacon of democ racy in Asia and a force for good in the world, Taiwan is a valuable partner that can help overcome these global challenges. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan has provided humanitarian support across the globe, includ ing much-needed masks and medical supplies, as well as developing and sharing its homegrown vaccine. Taiwan also sent over 550 tons of relief supplies to the people of Ukraine following the Russian invasion of their country, in addition to making over US$40 million in donations for Ukrainian refugees.Further, Taiwan is committed to combat ing climate change, with a blueprint for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and policies in place to help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As the world’s 22nd-largest economy in terms of GDP and a major semiconductor manu facturer, Taiwan plays a key role in global supply chains. And as a defender of democracy, Taiwan is working to safeguard the status quo and support the rules-based interna tional order. While China is using coercion to export its brand of authoritarian ism abroad, Taiwan lets its free and open society lead by example.Sadly,Taiwan is unable to participate in the largest and most important forum of global cooperation due to the relentless suppres sion by the People’s Republic of China (PRC). By deliberately conflating its “One China” principle with the UNGA Resolution 2758—the resolution that determined who repre sents “China” in the orga nization some 50 years ago—Beijing is misleading the world by spreading the fallacy that Taiwan is a part of the PRC. Contrary to these false claims, the resolution does not take a position on Taiwan, nor does it include the word “Taiwan.” The long-term status quo is, the ROC (Taiwan) and the PRC are separate jurisdictions, with neither subordinate to the other. The people of Taiwan can only be repre sented in the international community by their free and democratically elected government.Thewrongful interpre tation of UNGA Resolution 2758 has long deprived Taiwan of the right to participate in the United Nations and its special ized agencies, and it has also denied the interna tional community of an opportunity to benefit from Taiwan’s contribu tions. Worse yet, the PRC’s efforts to rewrite Taiwan’s status at the UN further undermine global peace and stability. Beijing’s recent dangerous military maneuvers surrounding Taiwan is a case in point. The UN Charter states clearly that the purposes and principles of the United Nations are to maintain international peace and stability, and that international disputes should be resolved by peaceful means. However, Beijing continues to conduct military exercises in areas around Taiwan, undermining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, escalating tensions, impacting international trade and transporta tion, and putting regional peace and security at risk. Such irresponsible actions need to be condemned and brought to a halt. Given the current circumstances, it is even more important that UN and its member states stop allowing such a member, which ironi cally is a member of the UN Security Council, to dictate the positions of the organization to suit its own political agenda. Acquiescing to China’s wrongful claims over Taiwan will only desta bilize the region, which is also against the very purpose of the UN. Taiwan will resolutely defend its sovereignty and security. As a respon sible member of the international community, Taiwan will also continue to exercise restraint in response to China’s provo cations, and work together with like-minded coun tries to uphold peace and stability in the region. And as we have shown the world over the years, we will continue to fulfill our international responsibili ties by actively engaging with and contributing to the international commu nity. The theme of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlock ing challenges” pointedly reminds us of the grave challenges facing the international community: the COVID-19 pandemic, food and energy short ages, disrupted global supply chains, and climate change, the list goes on. When the UN talks about “joint solutions” and “soli darity” to tackle “intercon nected crises,” we could not agree more. Taiwan is more than willing and able to be part of such joint solutions. And the 23.5 million resilient Taiwan ese people surely should not be excluded from such important global efforts. We are thankful that countries worldwide are beginning to realize what Taiwan can offer and many support Taiwan’s robust participation in the UN system. Among them, the European participationforyearaoverwhelminglyParliamentapprovedresolutiononJuly6thisexpressingsupportTaiwan’smeaningfulininterna tional organizations. The G7 countries have also expressed similar support. In particular, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken publicly encouraged all UN member states to join the United States in support of Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN system last October. Our shared obstacles require all hands on deck. Those grave intercon nected crises cannot be resolved until the entire world comes together. Taiwan has proved to be a reliable and indispensable partner, and the people of Taiwan stand ready to contribute. Let’s work together as one for the global good!

SEPTEMBER 08-SEPTEMBER 14, 2022 17BeaconMediaNews.com NEWS B aton Twirling Club, Coding Club, Food Crafts Club, and Hawks Nest Community Building Club are just a sampling of the over 20 clubs offered to elementary school students at Arcadia Unified School District’s Highland Oaks Elementary School. After a two-year pause due to the pandemic, Highland Oaks Elementary is looking to reinstate its club program this school year. Patricia Mattera, now into her seventh year as the Highland Oaks Principal, first gained inspiration for the student clubs from her experience as a teacher at a magnet school on the East Coast.Shortly after pitching the idea to the school’s leader ship committee, comprised of a group of Highland Oaks teachers, the school began organizing the clubs and started this unique elemen tary school program during the 2018-2019 school year with students in grades 2 through 5. “We taught with a lot of hands-on experi ences,” Mattera said. “We had student clubs where teachers would teach some thing that was of interest to them or that they were passionateAccordingabout.”toMattera, a goal for the club experience for students was to bolster their learning and experi ence aside from core classes, such as math, English, science, and history, and allow students the opportu nity to delve into three clubs of their interest in each school year. Other subse quent goals for this program are to allow students to, from an early age, take on new leadership skills, step out of their comfort zones, and meet new people. It is possible that kindergarten ers and first graders will also get the chance to join clubs during the second part of this school year. Club meetings are divided into three six-week sessions throughout the school year. Each week, clubs are held on Thursday afternoons for 45 minutes. Second through fifth graders have been inter mixed throughout the clubs, meaning students with different primary teachers and from different grade

Among some of the clubs offered are Knitting Club, A Mathematicians Dream, Harmony Hawks Choir, Helping Hawks - Service club for Disability Aware ness, Football, Food Crafts, and Robotics. Through the club program, students have also learned about garden ing, stop motion animation, speech and debate, and created lanyards, origami, art projects, comic books, andWithmore.over 20 different clubs, Highland Oaks aims to provide something for everyone so all students can look forward to Thursday afternoons. While most clubs are taught by teachers, a few retired teachers and district teaching coaches have also pitched in by volunteering to lead a few clubs. The school is also trying to find ways to bring in more community members with an interest or craft they want to share with students.Fourth-grade teacher, Janae Williams, is one club leader who also plays an instrumental role in organizing programming for the Williamsclubs. noted, “We have student clubs that have planned and run a schoolwide Veterans Day Assembly, A Disability Awareness Day, worked on our Student Showcase, planned Spirit Days, performed in front of our school, and organized service projects, such as Treats for the Troops and Blankets for Project Linus.” “I think it is really beneficial for students because they get to partici pate in real-life learning that is different from our regular academic standards. Students are learning about their strengths and getting to use their own voice,” Williams added.
For more information about Highland Oaks Elemen tary School, please visit ho.ausd.net. For further infor mation on the clubs provided, please view this Highland Oaks’ Google Slides presen tation, bit.ly/HighlandOak sClubs. To learn more about the Arcadia Unified School District, visit www.ausd.net.
The clubs give students the opportunity to work with different teachers and interact with peers in other grades.“As a teacher, I really like getting to work with students from other classes and grade levels as well,” Williams shared. “Students work with children from other classes and grade levels and are able to create relationships across the Apartschool.” from allowing students the opportunity to try new activities, the clubs also help students showcase their different strengths. For instance, some students who may struggle academically are able to demonstrate their talents in other areas offered by the clubs, such as sports, arts, or performing arts clubs.Perhaps the most impor tant attributes these clubs help develop in students are success and confidence. Mattera shared, “When students are experiencing something of their choice that is of interest to them, they are successful and gain confidence.”

tate wildlife officials asked for the public's help Monday finding an injured bear who was shot with an arrow near Arcadia.

“The recent extreme heat wave high lights the importance of the investments Los Angeles Unified is making for the longterm,” according to the district. “ LAUSD said the district continues to “prioritize” the upgrade and replacement of air conditioning and heating systems, and is working to “accelerate campus greening” and remove asphalt from schoolyards.
"When we saw the bear initially laying on the front lawn, it was probably 25-30 feet from us and he was helpless. He laid on his side, he perched his head up to look at us and, almost as though asking for help, he lifted his paw up, which was the most heart-wrenching thing," Camacho told the station. "The arrow was probably, well I couldn't tell how large the arrow was but it (had) penetrated."
“We appreciate the advocacy and part nership by community organizations, and we encourage our local, state and federal elected officials to prioritize greening infra structure investments in schools and our communities, and develop climate change solutions for California and beyond,” the LAUSD said in a statement Tuesday.

Reclaim Our Schools LA member Maura Howe, who works with the advocacy group Students Deserve, said that while district officials have long “promised change,” students are “still suffering.”
“Our children come home very hot, and sometimes they don’t want to do their homework,” said retired LAUSD teacher and United Teachers Los Angeles member Lucy Garcia, a leader of the Climate Reality Project. “Our children do not need to be in this heat Schoolyardswave.” are often the hottest loca tions in communities due to the large swaths of asphalt, researchers have found. More than 600 schools are listed on LAUSD’s “Greening Index,” which ranks campuses in order of the most asphalt and least amount of green space. Most of the 150 schools in “very high need” are in South and East Los Angeles, where park space is scarce.
Camacho said that after a while, the bear got up and gingerly lumbered a few blocks away to another yard, but it was clear the animal was seriously injured and in pain. "The bear was obviously in pain and in fact when we lost him in the brush, we could hear him moan, which was very sad," Camacho told CBS2.Anyone who sees the bear was asked to call the Arcadia Police Department at 626-5745150.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife wants to locate the animal, evaluate the bear's condition and determine a plan of action. The bear might have been shot at a local bow hunting area that's permitted in Califor nia through the Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement program.

A neighbor, Ernie Camacho, told CBS2 that the bear was a regular in the neighborhood, and added that seeing the wounded animal was a tough experience.

A s the record-breaking heat wave continues for the eighth day, a parents coalition Wednesday demanded more green space and shade on playgrounds in the Los Angeles Unified School District, saying the district must take “bold action” to protect students. Reclaim Our Schools LA — an association of parents, educators, students and commu nity members — contends that LAUSD is “completely unprepared” to deal with extreme heat. “If you think about what it feels like to be in a parking lot on a hot day, this is what kids all over Los Angeles experience every day,” said coalition member Aleigh Lewis, co-founder of Angelenos for Green Schools and a parent of two elementary school students.“These low-maintenance school yards are often the hottest in any neighborhood.” For students to be able to learn, she said, “They have to be healthy. Green schoolyards are also incredible sites for learning. What is more relevant than kids being able to play outside?”Thecomments came at a live-streamed news conference held outside Lorena Street Elementary School in the Boyle Heights neighborhood. Members of the group said the school is among the district sites most in need of green space and shade. Excessive heat warnings will be in place in most of the region through Friday, with some possibly extending into Saturday morning, forecasters said. Searing heat and dry weather have blanketed the area for more than a week. Reclaim Our Schools called for LAUSD to “de-asphalt” campuses, charging that hot, unshaded asphalt playgrounds are detri mental to both education and health.
