The L.A. County participants were chosen by the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Guaranteed Income, which is researching guaranteed income programs across the Recipientscountry.receive the money via debit card. They range in age from 18 to 91 and live in communities throughout the county, speaking languages including Armenian, Cantonese, Farsi, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish and English, according to officials with Breathe: L.A. County's Guaranteed Income Program. The program administrator, Strength Based Community Change, will keep in touch with the selected participants and assist them throughout the duration of the program to help them reach their personal and financial goals, officials said. The pilot program is based on a similar program in Stockton, California, that has been praised for its success. The city of Los Angeles introduced a guaranteed basic income program, called BIG:LEAP, last year.

The MWD recommends trees and gardens be pre-watered before the shutdown and maintained using water collected from the sink and shower. Additional watersaving tips in preparation for and during the shutdown are available at mwdh2o. com/shutdown."Duringthis shutdown, we'll be tapping into a very limited supply of water to deliver to these communities," MWD board Chairwoman Gloria Gray said. "So we must eliminate all outdoor water use and do everything else we can to conserve for 15 days. We want to thank residents and businesses in advance for their support and recognizing the watersupply challenges our region faces."

L os Angeles County's guaranteed basic income program is underway, with 1,000 residents now receiving $1,000 a month for the next three years, officials saidTheTuesday.recipients were chosen randomly from more than 180,000 people who applied for the "Givenprogram.thehuge number of L.A. County residents who applied, it's abundantly clear that a guaranteed basic income is an idea whose time has come," Supervisor Sheila Kuehl said. "I'm confident that we will see what other pilots have already shown: that a guaranteed basic income, by giving people a bit of financial breathing room, allows them to stabilize their lives and that of their family. "Three years from now, I feel confident that this L.A. County program will be seen as a foundation stone that led to expanded programs providing economic opportu nity and stability to every eligible American household," Kuehl continued. The county Board of Supervisors voted to develop the pilot program last year to address poverty and income instability. Participants must be at least 18 years old, have a household income under $56,000 for a single person or $96,000 for a family of four and have experienced negative impacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents in the Central Basin Munici pal Water District, Foothill Municipal Water District, Three Valleys Municipal Water District and West Basin Municipal Water District will also be impacted. Officials discovered a leak in the 36-mile Upper Feeder pipeline, which delivers water from the Colorado River to Southern California, earlier this year.

The only somber note in Shawn Spencer’s other wise lively article is the revelation that during her teens her over-protective father didn’t allow her to attend football games “if Arcadia was playing against Monrovia …” How sad. We owe our love of sports to the ancient Greeks -- but what is it in today’s angry world that causes some sports fans to become violent when their team loses? Perhaps the ancient Greeks also lost their tempers at their games, but there are no historical records of any fracases among sports fans such as we see today. And what lunacy has caused some of us to turn our most treasured enter tainments into so much dangerous fury? Is it nothing more than a product of our extremely competi tiveOneculture?of my favorite stories about cultural differ ences narrates the tale of missionaries who tried to teach some American Indian children the game of basket ball. After explaining to them the basics of the game, they paired the children into two teams and set them loose to engage in a tourna ment against each other. But to their surprise, the children just enjoyed bouncing the ball and passing it among them selves, and when one of them scored a basket on either side of the court, all the children clapped and cheered.

Re: “Wildcat pride! #rawr” (Monrovia Old Town report, Aug. 25)

L abor Day is always a fun time of the year. Most people are off of work for the threeday weekend. Many get a chance to spend time with loved ones over picnics and barbecues. The Labor Day holiday was created in the 1880s to honor the works and contributions of American workers, and the American labor movement. In the last two and a half years, the American workplace has trans formed in ways that we could not have envisioned. Many people are now working from home. Roles and responsibilities have changed. There are many labor shortages, and pay increases. There is more transparency in recruiting andAlonghiring.with all of this change, you may have heard about the concept of "quiet quitting." If you've wondered what this trend is about, it's honestly not as new as it sounds. Quiet quitting isn't really about quitting. It's about employees slacking off at work. Right now, it's all the rage among employees. One thing the pandemic taught us is that life is short. Things aren't guaranteed. And, when times get tough, many companies will let employees go to save the company. People care more now about benefits and balance than they care about money alone. The question for employers becomes, how do you curb this trend? How do you keep people engaged? It's hard anymore to know if employees are really working. When they're working from home, employees are only seen during meetings, and only if they turn on their cameras. Some employers have addressed these concerns by monitoring employees more. They've increased their use of software that measures

F FS Monrovians. Please make up your gosh darn minds. Y’all bitch and moan when restaurants and storefronts are empty because it’s bad for the city, property owners are greedy and the city needs to support small businesses. You whine and complain every time a burger & bar joint opens up because we have enough of them. Why can’t we have something original? Some thing freshly made and not delivered frozen and fried. We need something new — something creative. Well, we had one. It was called The Monrovian. They cooked with farm fresh ingre dients. They used French butter and actual olive oil; not an olive/canola blend of bullsh*tery. Everything was homemade and made to order. The baked goods were so creative and excep tionally delicious. It wasn’t just staffed by employees. Management was on site every day, baking and cooking to ensure everything was up to par. And boy was it. But no…y’all weren’t satisfied. You wanted the original Monrovian. Tasteless and unimpressive. Unsea soned spaghetti sauce. Garlic bread that was all butter and no garlic. Meatloaf that the Los Angeles Kings could shoot into the net. Don’t get me wrong; they had a pretty decent breakfast and the staff and owner were the bee’s knees. But let’s be real; that restaurant was tired and dusty. I know the owner was too (tired, not dusty — she was gorgeous), which is why she sold it. She had worked hard for years and it was high time she got to enjoy life and snuggle her grandchildren as often as she wanted. I adored Sia and I hope she is enjoying her retirement because she most certainly deserves to. The new owners loved Monrovia so much that when they bought the property and restaurant, they kept the name in homage to the original; a tribute. Maybe that was their first mistake. Y’all seemed to expect the same food. The same mauve booths. So many foul, nasty comments on the Facebook. “Why don’t they just bring back the original [4-page] menu?” I love a good meatloaf as much as the next person. So, you know what I do? I make Rememberit. that one article I wrote? The one where the adorable editors at Monrovia Weekly botched the title so that you thought a local restauranteur was closing. Or worse, dead. Everyone rallied about: “Head to [insert restaurant name here]!! Support local busi nesses!” Where were you for The Monrovian? They were a local business. Why wasn’t that enough to warrant your support? They weren’t a burger/bar/taco joint. It was a new concept, just like you asked for. They occupied the building once the owners put it up for sale. No empty store front, just like you asked. I get it. Maybe it wasn’t your cup of tea. There are places that aren’t my go-to. You know what I do when I see a post about those places on social media? I do just what Dionne Warwick would do; I scroll on by. Because I also do not want local busi nesses to close. I also do not want empty storefronts. To those of you that supported The Monrovian, cheers to you. That food was bomb! Good grief… that pizza was comparable to really good sex and if you did not try the “What Have Yous” (garlic flatbread with burrata cheese, EVOO, sea salt and pepper), then it is highly possible you don’t know what joy is. Rumor has it that the owner is changing the concept to Kbbq. That’s all it is right now; an unsubstanti ated rumor. If it’s true, I will support it. I won’t bash it online, whether I like it or not. There are enough of us wonderful Monrovians to go around. Support what you love! As loud as you want to. But you can also support what you don’t love by not bashing it. Be better. P.S. there is no darn Hobby Lobby coming to the old Bed Bath & Beyond building!!! None. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

Going to work isn't like going to an amusement park. An employer's job isn't to keep everyone happy and enter tained all day from nine to five. If you have found yourself “quiet quitting,” it's time to reevaluate. What could you do at work to feel more engaged in your projects? What could you do to connect more with colleagues? If the answer is nothing, it may be time to look elsewhere. Work is an important part of life. If you find yourself checked out most of the time and without hope of change, dust off your resume. Also killed in the crash were Nathesia Lewis, 43, and her friend 38- year-old Lynette Noble, who were in anotherEightcar.other people were alsoDuringinjured. The motion also calls for county staff to explore what possible changes in state and local law could help further regulate speed in the area, through methods such as "automated speed enforce ment and red-light cameras at key intersections." It also calls for the development in 60 days of a complete "Commu nity Traffic Safety" plan for the Windsor Hills/Ladera Heights area that includes a study of possible "road diets to curb excessive speeding."

Her motion called for a series of reports from county officials, and instructs the Department of Public Works to hire an outside contractor "to conduct an after-action review" of the response to the Aug. 4 crash at La Brea and Slauson avenues, with a report back to the board in 60 days.Italso called on Public Works officials to "take appropriate actions to slow down excessive speeds on La Brea Avenue and Slauson Avenue and surrounding areas including, but not limited to, consideration of off-the-shelf and/or quickbuild safety improvements" within 30 days.

Supervisors call for safety reviews after fatal Windsor Hills crash

N early one month after a fiery crash killed five people and an unborn baby at a Windsor Hills intersection, the county Board of Super visors Tuesday called for a series of studies and imme diate steps aimed at slowing traffic at the crossroad and other high-danger roadways.

In a motion filed Tuesday, Cedillo requested that the Bureau of Street Services and the Bureau of Engineering create the publicly available maps."In order to support the local Salvadoran vendors, it is necessary for the City to develop tools clearly outlining the City's vending policies and where vending is and is not allowed, specifi cally within the El Salvador Corridor," the motion states. The area around West Pico Boulevard and Vermont Avenue is a hub for Salvador ans living in Los Angeles, and has become a popular site for sidewalk vendors, according to Cedillo's office. His motion comes a few weeks after Councilman Bob Blumenfield filed a motion seeking to expand protec tions for street vendors after an attack in Woodland Hills. That motion requested a report back on laws that apply to threats against street vendors, recommen dations for additional laws to deter such attacks and strat egies for enforcing such laws. The motion also stated that there has been an increasing number of similar incidents in Southern California that may not be directed solely at street vendors, but "are accom panied by obvious antiLatino and anti-immigrant language."

"Disturbingly, traffic fatalities have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, and reckless speeding, street takeovers and erratic driver behavior has become widespread," Supervisor Holly Mitchell wrote in a motion that was approved on a 4-0 vote Tuesday, with Supervisor Sheila Kuehl absent.

The Slauson corridor is an area I'm very familiar with and (I) completely feel the anxiety and sense of loss that we heard many callers express today." She called traffic fatali ties "endemic" in the county, adding, "Black people are dying from them at a dispro portionate rate." Linton was hospital ized after the crash but survived. She was charged with six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said his office could not file a manslaughter charge in a case involving an unborn child.Linton may have expe rienced an "apparent lapse of consciousness" during a mental health crisis in the moments , the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday. Information in a filing by Linton's attorneys detail her four-year struggle with bipolar disorder and a deter mination by a doctor who treated her following the crash that "she has no recol lection of the events that led to her collision," The Times reported.

"We need to explore the availability of additional tools to improve our infra structure and to hold people accountable to mitigate dangerous driver behavior and keep people alive."

Linton's attorneys wrote that her mental health issues became apparent to her family in May 2018 when she ran out of her apartment during a panic attack, and when police approached her, she jumped on a police car and was arrested for disor derly conduct, The Times reported.Afew days after that arrest, Linton told her family that she believed she was possessed by her dead grandmother.Linton'sarraignment is set for Oct. 26.

Jason Lee: My goal is to ensure public, safety and reducing crime. I think that, that could happen within the first term. We simply just need to hire additional police officers. But for my other goals, to implement new water programs and business development incentives, takes more time and more collaboration amongst the other council member which I can facilitate. Working with the other councilmembers and city employees I will look forward to.

Jason Lee: I'm a longtime resident (17 years) and a voter in Arcadia. I'm also in an attorney at-law with my law firm is located on Hunting ton drive, right behind the BJ's Warehouse restaurant. I'm very much local and I'm very much invested in the city of Arcadia. I care a lot about Arcadia, the future of Arcadia, the city’s direction, Arcadia mattes a great deal personally to me because I may be retiring here in a few years.Ialso had training and experience in journalism coming here as a graduate student from China. That was very conducive to being a good attorney. HeySoCal.com: What are your concerns and what problems do you want to Jasonaddress?Lee:My top goal is to ensure public safety and to reduce crime. And that can be done by strengthening the police force by hiring addi tional officers and to having increased patrols in our neighborhoods for visibility. Arcadia has surplus funds in its budget that allow for this. The crime rate is higher than five years ago. We also need to address the homeless problem. It is a big concern with citizens. Arcadia is feeling like a target to many residents. Our officer should be a visible presence to deter crime. We have reserve police officers, and the budget would allow for the hiring of maybe five more fulltime police officers.

Jason Lee is running for the 5th District in the Arcadia City Council race. HeySoCal.com caught up with him to discuss his campaign.

HeySoCal.com: Who is Jason Lee and why do you want to serve on the Arcadia City Council?

HeySocal.com: What else beyond public safety? Jason Lee: We have a water problem. Arcadia has always been known for being a garden because the word “Arcadia” comes from the Greek language. It means a garden. We have alternative sources of water. Basically, we need to capture the rain water in the winter and store it for summertime. We need to reinvent our system and we leadership in that direc tion because we do not have other choices. The solution may be issuing municipal bonds. Keep Arcadia green. We also need to address the need for renovation and modernizing Arca dia’s downtown commer cial districts, such as on Huntington Drive and First Street. The city needs to offer incentives beyond expedit ing the permit process or procedures. Tax credits, for instance.

HeySoCal.com: Where can you make the most immediate impact?

16 SEPTEMBER 01-SEPTEMBER 07, 2022 BeaconMediaNews.com

As a homegrown Arcadian, striving to serve my commu nity as Council Member, I will represent the wave of a new generation of young leaders who will fight for each and everyone’s causes. I grew up in Arcadia and currently reside in the 5th District here. My parents are immigrants from the Middle East and are proud Ameri cans.I grew up here, I live here, I went to school here, I shop here, I played sports here, it’s my home. To put it simply, I have a special place in my heart for Arcadia and I want to see Arcadia continue to succeed and become an even better place to live. It has been a longstanding philosophy of mine to use every minute I have wisely. There’s no time wasting with me. I am always on the move, trying to do something produc tive. Sometimes, this can be a little exhausting for my friends and family, but they have no choice but to accept me. I jest, but in saying that, I have been blessed with a strong education, having spent some time earning my Juris Doctor and Master of Laws after my undergradu ate studies in Economics and Political Science. I then spent some time working with the United States House of Representatives, specifically on behalf of the Arcadia community and the 27th District as a whole, and with the United States Senate. I was always highly motivated to learn how the law informs and regulates representation and participation in the political process. The law lays the structural founda tion of our society and so I always believed it was imperative to understand it. It is one of the few ways to make long-lasting and positive improvements in ourIsociety.have worked in a variety of places within the legal field, but I always knew that at some point I would like to wield this experience and run for a public service position. What good is this experience if I can’t use it to improve that which is important to me? It’s just part of my personality to naturally gravitate toward this kind of thing. These finer details influence politics and ultimately the culture in which we live. It has always fascinated me. I strongly believe that it is most important to note that book smarts prepare you on a technical level to tackle the world – and so does work experience. But there is a human, personal and emotional side – one that deals with not only my passions but the feelings and concerns of those around me. I will bring that to Arcadia. And I am not sure everyone who runs for a public service position truly understands this. HeySoCal.com: What is the most important goal for you? First and most impor tantly, we need to address public safety. Mailbox theft is a problem that I keep hearing from residents. The other is homelessness. We generally like to call them homeless, and by technical definition, that’s what they are – but I think we need to reexamine how we view this unfortunate circum stance that these people find themselves in and the effect it has on the rest of the city residents. I prefer to call them unhoused. This is the number one agenda that can be rapidly implemented with a longterm and well-thought-out strategy of low-cost housing and job programs. The city budget can allow for this. We need to work on getting the “unhoused” dignified places to stay away from constitu ent Personalhomes. safety is another issue. I will petition to quickly increase police patrol and presence all over Arcadia. Especially around schools and shopping malls, including parking lots and dimly lit spaces like our beautiful parks that are constantly frequented by elderly residents and children. That being said, it's a two-pronged solution. The first prong is to address homelessness directly. The second prong is to bolster our public safety measures overall…more patrol presence and training for officers. We have to ensure that our residents are protected from potentially violent people wander ing the streets who have a propensity to exhibit anti social behavior. We should treat everyone with dignity and respect and we also have to balance that with the appropriate actions that need to be taken to protect our residents from harm. Further to that, a welcom ing city will keep property values high, attracting investment and ultimately leading to more money in Arcadian’s pockets and more opportunities for the next generation. HeySoCal.com: What is your idea about govern ing?Daniel Malki: I have always understood that being transparent is a just and righteous thing. Voters deserve this. Many constitu ents that I have spoken to don't fully know what's going on in the city despite their best efforts. Given that, I will draft and push legisla tion that increases council member transparency. This will include publicly report ing their official schedules, work-related meetings, and other forms of related and relevant communication. We must ensure that nobody can profit off of our great constituents. Transparency is the bedrock of any func tioning democracy. And so we must demand trans parency and accountabil ity from all of our elected officials, including myself. We must seek to gain and maintain the public’s trust. I will make sure Arca dia’s citizens can come to me, at any time, with any concern, and be heard in a timely manner. I will always strive to respond personally. It is not pleasant to reach out to your elected leaders and to hear back from one of their staffers with prepared responses. On top of that, I will strive to address your concerns with potential solutions. I am here to work and serve. HeySoCal.com: What are the blind spots in the currentDanielcouncil?Malki: I will make certain that Arca dian’s tax dollars will not be misused. Arcadians pay taxes directly to the City of Arcadia, thus their tax dollars must only be spent on benefiting the lives of our constituents. We have a reputable public school system. To keep our school system’s reputation high, I will make certain that Arcadians are reaping the benefits of their tax dollars, which are going towards schools in Arcadia. I am aware that we have students that don't live in Arcadia. Those students usually use a relative's address to attend our great public school system. I will draft and drive measures aimed to prohibit future students who live in other cities from taking prece dence over our students in Arcadia’s public school system. If elected, my oath and responsibility are to help the people who live in Arcadia. You have my word. You can reach Daniel Malki at danielmalki.com and via email at daniel@ danielmalki.com.
