Supervisor Mitchell wants youth offenders moved to Malibu camp LA County gas prices drop again after stabilizing for 2 straight days S an Gabriel Valley drivers have some relief in their daily commute. As of 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, the eastbound I-210 freeway officially reopened after five days of repair work to the San Gabriel Bridge. Yet, even though the project originally started with work on the westbound side in July, it seems as though it’s not fully complete, according to Caltrans. All lanes on the bridge will be open during the day, but motorists can expect some lanes to be closed over night for bridge barrier work through the end of this year.
“We expect people to hit some congestion but during off-peak hours it should be OK,” he said, still warning of bottlenecked delays because freeways were reduced to 50% of their usual capacity to fit lanes going in both directions. It’s unknown the impact the overnight closures will have on congestion since Caltrans has not yet released a schedule of when the closures will take place. Avoid side streets Both the west- and east bound repair work happened along the stretch of the I-210 near the I-605 on-ramp and Irwindale Avenue, putting Irwindale, Duarte, Monrovia, Pasadena and Arcadia under the most pronounced congestion during peak weekdayOfficialshours.pushed for drivers to avoid taking side and residential streets, espe cially certain commercial trucks. July’s closure saw Duarte officials lamenting large, 18-wheelers exiting the 605 and heading west on Huntington Drive, causing delays and disruptions to the area. Trucks be warned Caltrans hoped to prevent trucks from spilling onto the historic Route 66 (Huntington Boulevard) thoroughfare by using LED signs prompting drivers to instead exit at Lower Azusa Road or Live Oak Road. California Highway Patrol pulled over four trucks for illegally taking Hunting ton Drive during the last set of closures, hoping to avoid further congestion by stopping truck drivers during high traffic hours, accord ing to Duarte City Council member Sam Kang. Because of this, Caltrans took further steps by fully prohibiting trucks over seven tons from using Hunting ton Drive in Duarte at all by subjecting violators to traffic fines.“I hope it is going to be better (than last time),” Kang said. “My staff has been talking to Caltrans and working with the Sheriff’s Department. They are more receptive.” Why it’s happening The continuing construc tion is in an effort to restore parts of the San Gabriel
“Just avoid the area and avoid yourself a headache,” Menjivar urged.
I-210 closure is over…for now
rage happens when people are frustrated. I’d rather people stay safe,” he says. Ultimately, Caltrans and local officials are pushing the same message for the entire project—take alter nate routes, public transit or, if possible, work from home if any of the repair work will impede your travels.

G ov. Gavin Newsom Monday vetoed a bill that would have allowed Los Angeles to become one of three cities in California to provide super vised injection sites. Newsom said in 2018 that he was "very, very open" to the idea of a pilot program to allow legal drug injection sites. But in a statement Monday, Newsom said he was concerned over the "unin tended consequences" of the bill, authored by Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Fran cisco, because it would allow an unlimited number of safe injection sites. "I have long supported the cutting edge of harm reduction strategies," Newsom said. "However, I am acutely concerned about the operations of safe injec tion sites without strong, engaged local leadership and well-documented, vetted, and thoughtful operational and sustain abilityNewsom'splans."

When I was a child in Mexico City, most drivers (males of course) considered traffic laws and speed limits to be only for wimps, not for macho men like them. Thus, busy streets induced terror. I wish I had the proverbial dollar for each time I saw pedestrians make the sign of the cross on their chest and kiss their crucifix before crossing the street. So, I agree with Shawn Spencer’s advice that no driver can ever be too disci plined, or too attentive, or too courteous, or too alert. And how admirable it is when drivers control their temper even when provoked. I’m reminded of the story about Eisenhower’s mother who told him that it’s far better for a man to conquer his temper than it is to conquer a nation. Don’t you agree that her advice helped her son become the outstanding general and president who made our nationAndproud?yes, why do parents, in their desire to protect their children, insist that they not walk to school, no matter how short the distance? In my opinion, that’s a poor excuse. After all, the only way a child can be fully protected is to be cloistered at home. At the risk of sounding like the caricature of a typical old man, let me say: “When I was their age, I walked to school two miles each way. (And next time I tell the story again, the distance will be longer.)
By Shawn shawn@girlfridaysolutions.netSpencer B enjamin Franklin said, “Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead.” It's hard to overstate the importance of keeping your job search private from your work Gettingcolleagues.aninterview can be exciting, especially if it goes well. If you're dying to leave your company, the hope of a new job can leave you feeling both relieved and energized. And, the more interviews you have with one company, the better the chances are that you'll get the job. Right? Some of the reasons I’ve heard for sharing this job search secret include, “I know this person is my friend, so it’s okay.” “My boss and I are close; they won’t mind.” “My company needs to know I’m interviewing, so they’ll be prepared if I do leave. It's the right thing to do.” “I want to see if my company will give me more money to stay.”
I am not originally from this lovely city. I was born and raised in Sierra Madre. Funny story: but when I moved to Monrovia 12 years ago, I came kicking and screaming. Back then, I thought Monrovia was only good for the movies and the street fair. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with this city.A lot of my favorite memories are of working in town and watching my kids walk down the street together or with friends. I always felt so lucky to get those sneak peeks. I also loved the barrage of text messages that I got from people letting me know that they had seen my kids in town. It was such an “it takes a village” moment and those moments always warmed my heart. It also made my kids too nervous to ever act up in any substantial way, which I completely exaggerated to my benefit. Being born and raised in Sierra Madre, I should have gone to Pasadena High School. That was never an option, as my dad had heard too many stories of violence. I ended up at Arcadia High School, by some parental feat. When I was in high school, Monrovia seemed so far away. I wasn’t allowed to go to Monrovia, which was odd because I didn’t know anyone in Monrovia and had no reason to be there. At that time, the streets were pretty deserted and the sidewalks were dusted with people of ill repute. I have a vague memory of my mother bringing me to Monrovia so that she could shop at the fishmonger’s. I feel like that store was down near Chestnut, but no one I have ever spoken to seems to remember it. Back in the late 80s, it was so fun to go to the Friday night football games. I went often, but newsflash: I was not allowed to go to the games if Arcadia was playing against Monrovia, even if they were at Arcadia High. My dad was super protective and while I did not see the problem, he sure was adamant. Father knows best, right? Fast forward 12 years and Monrovia feels so much like home sweet home. I sure loved the 30-some thing years I spent in Sierra Madre, but I wouldn’t trade Monrovia for it. Fast forward 12 years and you will abso lutely find me at Monrovia’s Wildcat Stadium as our varsity football team plays its biggest rival, the Arcadia High School Apaches. Do not miss this game! Wear your green, wear your white and come on down and show some Monrovia High spirit! Show some Wildcat Pride! Don’t leave all the cheering to our amazing cheerlead ers. Visit gofan.co and prepurchase your tickets. This is going to be an exciting game and a definite Wildcat win! These glorious summer nights are almost gone. The game starts at 7 p.m., which leaves you plenty of time to grab a delicious dinner at one of our wonderful restau rants. Take advantage of the patio or sidewalk seating. The beautiful weather, and the lights in the trees, all make for a magical and memorable evening. I know I was nostalgic a lot, but we sure are lucky to live in this wonderful city.
AUGUST 25-AUGUST 31, 2022 7BeaconMediaNews.com OPINION Career Corner: Your secret job search
Often, a boss you perceived to be your friend feels an obli gation to let the company know you have disclosed this information to them. Even if they like you, your search may be perceived as being disloyal to the company. In the worstcase scenario, you may be fired and asked to leave imme diately. When it comes to asking for more money, keep this in mind. If you don’t have a written job offer, what incen tive does your company have to give you a raise? They don’t. There’s no good reason they should offer you any more money just because you’ve been interviewing. If you begin to tell colleagues about your search, don’t be surprised if the word gets around. People love to find something to talk about. If you share information about your search, you’re setting yourself up to become next. The last thing you want is for the word to get back to your boss before you’ve found a job.As exciting as it is to share about your job search, it’s 100 percent unwise to do so. You'll set yourself up for failure that can be difficult to repair. When it comes to job searching, there’s no better alternative than to keep your secret. First, none of these reasons provide the personal benefit they appear to. They simply give away your power. And worse, they put your current job at risk. When it comes to inter viewing, nothing is a sure bet. Even if a company has talked to you ten times and is in love with you, the position may be put on hold for budgetary reasons. The hiring manager may leave, and the process may halt. The company could reorganize and the job may no longer be needed. Until your offer is officially in writing and in your hands, there’s no offer. It could take you as long as a year or more to find a job. In the meantime, you still have bills to pay and a family to feed. Why would you put that in jeopardy?

Monrovia Old Town report: Wildcat pride! #rawr

W ith jurors unable to reach a verdict, a federal judge in downtown Los Angeles declared a mistrial Monday in the case against a Long Beach man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and injuring two other people by bombing an Aliso Viejo day spa in Federal2018.prosecutors said they plan to retry the case against Stephen Beal, with the case set to return to court Oct. 18. Beal, 63, faces federal charges of use of a weapon of mass destruction, malicious destruction of a building resulting in death, use of a destructive device in a crime of violence and possession of an unregistered destruc tiveHedevice.went on trial back in June. According to NBC4, which first reported the mistrial, jurors deliberated for about seven days before informing U.S. District Judge Josephine L. Staton Monday they were hopelessly dead locked.Beal was arrested in March 2019 in connec tion with the May 15, 2018, explosion that killed 48-year-old Ildiko Krajnyak, who co-owned the Magyar Kozmetica day spa with Beal, and critically injured a mother and daughter.
Salick presented to the jury what she said were pieces of wire found at the bombing scene that matched wire discovered during a search of Beal's home. About a week before the explosion, Beal was seen on surveillance video purchasing the type of battery used in the explo sive device, the federal prosecutor said. Beal also allegedly purchased three card board boxes similar to the one that contained the bomb, and federal officials contend he was one of the few people to have access to the business and was seen at the spa days before the blast, when they contend the bomb was planted. Harbaugh told jurors that while his client had a history of building and launching "hobby rockets" and making fireworks, any wire or other materials found in his home had no connection to the bomb. Following the blast, investigators reported finding two improvised explosive devices, three unregistered firearms and more than 100 pounds of explosive material at Beal's home."What Mr. Beal did for fun, the FBI viewed as a threat," the defense attorney said. "And the FBI made a snapTojudgment."illustrate what she called Beal's "burning obses sion" with Krajnyak, the prosecutor played a portion of a tape of the defendant reading a love poem he wrote for the victim. "I love that we will grow old together," the poem read. "I love that you are the last voice I hear before I go to sleep. I love how you nurture me ... you complete me."Beal faces a potential life prison sentence if convicted as charged, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. He has been in federal custody since his arrest.
"This is a case about obsession, infatuation and control," Assistant U.S. Attorney Annamartine Salick said in her opening statement of the trial. When Krajnyak rejected Beal and made no secret of dating other men, he "channeled his humiliation into hatching a plan to take revenge," the prosecutor said. FBI officials said Krajnyak was killed when she opened a cardboard box near the front desk of the Magyar Kozmetica spa, trig gering the explosive device inside. The force of the massive explosion ripped Krajnyak's body apart and destroyed the building. Defense attorney Craig Harbaugh, however, told jurors the FBI was "desper ate to find the person responsible as soon as possible," and immediately settled on Beal after the defendant called police himself after hearing of the explosion and submitted to three interviews over 12 hours.Beal "had nothing to hide," Harbaugh told jurors, alleging the FBI "disre garded clear evidence of Mr. Beal'sAccordinginnocence."to the defense, Beal had no motive to harm"TheyKrajnyak.were lovers, close friends and business partners," Harbaugh said. "Mr. Beal never had a harsh word to say about her. She cherished their relationship -- and so did he."

O n "Mamba Day" -the annual L.A. cele bration of the life and career of the late Lakers legend Kobe Bryant -- a giant outdoor mural was unveiled near downtown Wednesday, while the Santa Monica Pier's Ferris wheel was lit up in purple and gold starting at sunset. The unofficial remem brance of Bryant, who was nicknamed "Black Mamba," takes place every Aug. 24 -- or 8/24, in a nod to the uniform numbers 8 and 24 that he wore during his 20-year Hall of Fame career. Both his numbers were retired by the Lakers in 2017, the year after he hung up his sneakers, making him the first NBA player to have two numbers retired by the same team.Bryant, who died Jan. 26, 2020, in a helicopter crash in Calabasas that also took the lives of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others, would have turned 44 on Tuesday, and his widow, Vanessa, posted on Kobe mural unveiled, Santa Monica ferris wheel lit up for ‘Mamba Day'

he hascompany,Seattle-basedBungie,madearguably one of the biggest online games ever made. As of 2022, “Destiny 2’s” player base has reached roughly 40 million across all plat forms. They have made sure not to rest on their laurels, always making changes to the game for better or worse. From the well-received expansion “Forsaken” to the recent “Witch Queen,” the game has evolved. The changes to the ongoing story and in-game content have kept things running for five years, but change has been on the horizon. Elements of the core gameplay have been slowly improved and made complex. The story has been building up to a dramatic shift in the nature of Desti ny’s established world. With such an ambitious story at play now, Destiny has to wrap up the current story arc with a bang.Bungie seems to be ready to deliver. Darkest before the dawn
In addition to the epic story, players can expect to expand their arsenal with “Strand,” a new subclass (sets of powers players can use) for your Guardian (player character). The three playable classes (Titans, Warlocks, and Hunters) will each get their own variation of the power that ties into their unique identities. Titans get a wicked pair of gauntlet claws, Hunters can whip around a rope, and Warlocks get to manifest eerie psychic powers. “Strand” will presumably be as customizable as the other subclasses in the past, allowing for unique play styles.Every class will be given the ability to use their “Strand” powers to swing around environments like Spider-Man. Bungie revealed that the ability was initially available to only Hunters, but was developed for the other classes due to how enjoyable it was. Better with friends It’s incredible to think that you have to go outside of “Destiny 2” to play some of the hardest content in the game. Endgame (high skill) content such as Raids, Night falls, and Trials of Osiris are only playable with other players; as of right now, you have to go onto thirdparty tools to grab five other people to do any of these activities. In “Lightfall,” Bungie is finally adding these tools to the game itself. You’ll be able to create listings in-game that ask other players to join you for anything that requires skilled players. The days of trudging through Reddit or Discord for other endgame players to run RaidsTowith.facilitate good behavior and skill, the ability to commend your fellow players at the end of an activity will also be added. While common in many online games, this is the first time Bungie is expand ing community tools without forcing players to leave the game. These newest changes seem appropriate, as “Light fall’s” story seems to be about rising together against a seemingly unstoppable force. Without a doubt, “Lightfall” seems like Bungie’s most ambitious expansion for “Destiny”“Destinyyet.2: Lightfall” will be released on February 28th, 2023 on PC, PS4/5, Xbox One/ Series X/S, and Stadia. The next major expansion in “Destiny 2” will be “Light fall,” which is set to bring the story to a brand new desti nation. The new area will be Neomuna—a city on the planet of Neptune—where the newest antagonist, The Witness, will finally arrive. While details of the story were vague, Bungie made it known that this expansion will not be the final chapter in the current saga. Players can expect to feel pushed up against the wall as the newest enemy in “Destiny’s” current storyline seems to be the biggest threat so far. Despite being called “Lightfall,” the city of Neomuna looks brightly lit with neon and lights every where. However, the new enemy faction (the Shadow Legion), is patrolling the streets and casting a shadow on the vibrant city.

HeySocal.com: What is the other big concern you wouldEileenaddress?Wang: The homeless issue is something we are all concerned about and need to address. It is just not a City Council issue. It’s a community issue. The city belongs to all the residents of the city Arcadia. It is just not only the City Council making decisions for us. Also, just overall police presence. There are a lot of accidents happening because of speeding on city streets. The speed limit is 35 mph on most city streets and speeds of 45 or 55 mph during the daytime are happening regularly and that makes residents very annoyed and worried. More police presence would help.

Eileen Wang: Yes, I want to put funding into neighborhood watch programs so that it can be organized and coordinated. That all feeds into public safety.
Eileen Wang for Arcadia City Council: Public safety first
HeySoCal.com: Why is Eileen Wang running for Arcadia City Council?
Eileen Wang: Because the big issue for all Arcadia residents is public safety. We had a robbery at “99 Ranch Market” last week and that makes residents worry. We must make a change together, as a community. I have experience at commu nity service and that’s where it starts. From the ground roots we can help make change. We need to involve more citizens, more neigh borhood-watch types of programs, but we need more people to be involved in this.
Also, listening to the public and gathering public comments is important. Public hearings are impor tant. HeySoCal.com: How would you work with your fellow council members? To attain your goals?
HeySoCal.com: What else would you like to see in Arcadia?Eileen Wang: More cultural festivals, music festivals. That would bring people into the city. And it’s good for the local small businesses. That’s impor tant to quality of life. We need to make a change together. We need diversity to come together. And we need to get resi dents to get out and vote. That’s how community involvement starts. I will serve the best interests of the residents of Arcadia. My boss will be the residents of Arcadia. For more information on Eileen Wang, see eileen 4arcadia.com.

Eileen Wang: Of course. I want to work with the city manager to know how much funding we have the ability to hire more officers. And also promoting neighbor hood watch programs is a goal.We can have more surveillance programs with cameras. We can patrol crime. The Arcadia city budget has a surplus that allows for this spending. And examining the current deployment of officers should be discussed. And I would work closely with the police chief (Roy Nakamura) on that. The city also has reserved police officers as well.
HeySoCal.com: Would you advocate hiring more police officers?
HeySocal.com: Can the city finance more of a neighborhood program?
Eileen Wang: It’s all about collaboration and what is fair for residents, that’s my first priority. And even if some do not support during the election, I will still work with them.

Daniel Malki for Arcadia City Council: Safety & transparency
HeySoCal.com: What’s the most important goal for for you? First and most impor tantly, we need to address public safety. And in particular, homelessness is a problem regarding public safety. This is the number one agenda that can be rapidly implemented. I will petition to quickly increase police patrol and its presence all over Arcadia. And espe cially around schools and shopping malls, including parking lots and dimly lit shopping areas. That being said, it's a two-pronged solution. The first prong is to address homelessness directly. But the second prong is to bolster our public safety measures overall — more patrol presence, more police officers. The city budget can allow for this. We need to work on getting the “onhouse” digni fied places to stay. I believe that in could be an unincor porated part of Arcadia, it is not close to homes.

"I am proud to unveil ‘Grana,' the tallest Bryant mural in Los Angeles," Neama Rahmani, president of West Coast Trial Lawyers, said at a news conference Wednesday as about 80 passersby and staff looked on. "The mural shows both sides of Kobe: the fiercely competitive black mamba and the creative genius behind the Academy Awardwinning ‘Dear Basketball."' Rahmani's "Dear Basket ball" reference was to a 2015 poem by Bryant that was adapted into a short 2017 animated feature narrated by Bryant himself. It won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2018. Smith, the mural's illustrator, told City News Service on Tuesday, "It was an honor to make this mural, a dedication to Kobe and his creative and athletic genius.""Kobe Bryant created stories for children that featured Black and Brown characters, so he inspired kids in ways that went even beyond what he did on the basketball court," Smith added.
Daniel Malki is running for Arcadia City Council is District 5 on Election Day Nov. 8. HeySoCal.com caught up with him to discuss his campaign. HeySocal.com: Who is Daniel Malki and why are you running for Arcadia CityDanielCouncil?Malki: I'm a homegrown Arcadian. I grew up in Arcadia and currently reside in the 5th District here. My parents were immigrants from the Middle East (Jordan) and are proud Americans.Ididmy undergraduate work at UC Santa Barbara and graduated with a law degree from USC. I went to school here; I shop here; I played sports here; it's my home to put it simply. I love Arcadia and I want to see Arcadia succeed more than it already has.
HeySoCal.com: What is your idea about governing? Daniel Malki: I've always understood that being trans parent is a powerful thing. If you can trust yourself and be trusted by others. A lot of constituents I have spoken to in the city don't really know what's going on and even with what is going on in theWecity.can do a better job informing citizens. We must demand, transparency and accountability from our city and overall government. I will make sure Arcadia citizens can come to me with anything they like and I want them to know I will respond. Their issues, their comments, we must address and work on.
To mark Mamba Day 2022, a giant outdoor mural -- dubbed "Grana" -- was unveiled Wednesday morning at the offices of the West Coast Trial Lawyers at 1147 S. Hope St. It's just a few blocks from Crypto. com Arena, where Bryant starred when it was known as Staples Center. The artwork, created by muralist Odeith and L.A.based illustrator Nikkolas Smith, measures 125 feet by 32 feet -- which the artists say is the largest portrait of Bryant ever created in the city. It covers an entire side of the building. It depicts a close-up of Bryant's face in black-andwhite, flanked by a mamba snake on the left and, in color, a group of children -including Gianna -- playing basketball atop a giant book. The book is "Epoca," one of the children's stories Bryant created through his Granity Studios company after he retired from basket ball.

Meanwhile, beginning at sunset Wednesday -- about 7:29 p.m. -- the 90- foot-tall Ferris wheel at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier was to be lit up with the numbers 8 and 24, as well as with the Lakers' gold and purple colors in a variety of patterns and transitions. Visitors to the pier will be able to see "LA (heart) 24" and ``LA (heart) 8 from sunset to midnight,” offi cialsBryantsaid. played his entire career with the Lakers and became the team's all-time leader in games (1,346), minutes played (48,637), field goals (11,719) and 3-point goals (1,827), among numerous team records. He also is the Lakers' all-time leader in points with 33,643. Kareem AbdulJabbar finished his 20-year career with an NBA-record 38,387 points, but only 24,176 were achieved in his 14 seasons with the Lakers. Bryant also led the Lakers to five NBA titles and appeared in 18 all-star games.Hewore No. 8 from 1996 to 2006, then switched to No. 24 for the rest of his career.
HeySoCal.com: What are the blind spots in the currentDanielcouncil?Malki: I will make sure that we and Arcadia will not be taken advantage regarding any taxes. Arcadi ans pay the city of Arcadia and those funds must only be spent on benefiting the lives of our constituents. We have a great public school system. In Arcadia, I want to make sure our children are reaping the benefits of their tax dollars, which are going towards schools in Arcadia. I am aware that we have students that don't live in Arcadia and they use a rela tive's address to attend our great public school systems. Throughout the area, the problems are relatively the same: public safety, homeless and transpar ency. If it's not solving those completely, we need to at least take steps to improve the problems.
