Because there is no human vaccine or cure for West Nile virus, health officials recommend that people use mosquito repellent. The CDC recommends products with the active ingredients DEET, Picari din, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus as being safe and effective against mosqui toes that can transmit diseases when used according to the labels. Other steps residents should take include:-eliminating standing water in clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, discarded tires, buckets, watering troughs or anything that holds water for more than a week; - ensuring that swimming pools, spas and ponds are properly maintained; - changing the water in pet dishes, bird baths and other small containers weekly; - requesting mosquitofish from your local vector control district for placement in ornamental ponds; and - reporting neglected (green) swimming pools in your neighborhood to your vector control district.

L os Angeles County health officials have confirmed the county’s first human cases of West Nile virus this year, saying six cases have been identified since late July. No specifics about the patients were released on Thursday -- but according to the county Department of Public Health, the victims live in the Antelope Valley, San Fernando Valley and San Gabriel Valley. Most of the patients were hospitalized in late July and early August, and all are recovering, according to the county.

According to the state, a total of 18 human cases of West Nile virus had been confirmed in California as of last Friday, including one in Pasadena, which has its own health department separate from the county. Orange County announced a human case earlier this month. The West Nile virus season typically runs from summer through fall, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People catch it from a bite from an infected mosquito, which contracts the virus when it feeds on an infected bird. Most people infected with the virus do not feel sick, but about 1 in 5 who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms, according to the CDC. About 1 in 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness, CDC data show.

“Mosquitoes thrive in hot weather and residents should follow simple steps to reduce their risk of exposure to mosquitoborne diseases, such as West Nile virus,” county Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis said in a “Simplestatement.measures can reduce mosqui toes and mosquito bites, like protect ing yourself and your family with insect repellent and removing standing water outside your home. West Nile virus can lead to hospitalization or death, and, by taking preventative steps now, residents can better protect themselves against infection and the serious neuro-invasive disease caused by this virus.”

I t’s that time of year again that my office under takes its most important function of the fiscal year that lays the groundwork for the very property taxes that pay for our vital public services: The Assessment Roll. In fact, it’s a Constitu tionalThemandate.rollfor2022 has been closed as of June 30 and it reflects growth for Alhambra as well as the rest of the county.First off, let me say this comprehensive tally values more than 2.5 million real estate parcels in Los Angeles County and results in the very tax dollars that go to pay for vital public services, such as healthcare, police, fire, schools and even librarians, to name just a few. As I mentioned, I am constitutionally mandated to close the Roll by the end of the fiscal year on June 30. As a point of reference, my fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. I am pleased to announce that the 2022 Assessment Roll has a total net value of $1.89 trillion, indicating the 12th year of consecutive growth. The 2022 Roll also grew by $122.38 billion (or 6.9%) over 2021. That value places nearly $19 billion to be used for those public services I just mentioned.Locally,Alhambra for 2022 came in at $11.39 billion for taxable values, which is a 5.3% increase over last year’s numbers. That includes 14,416 single-family homes, 3,702 apartment complexes and 1,336 commercialindustrial parcels for a grand total of 19,454 taxable prop erties. Yes, it’s a solid growth at $11.39 billion. Some basics: The Roll, as it is known, contains the assessed value of all real estate and business personal property in the county’s 88 cities along with the unincor porated areas. It also breaks down the number of singlefamily residential homes, apartments and commercialindustrial parcels. This year’s Roll comprises 2.58 million real estate parcels as well as business assess ments countywide. That includes 1.89 million singlefamily homes, 250,000 apart ment complexes, 248,000 commercial and industrial properties and more than 165,000 business property assessments.SincetheRoll is the inven tory for all taxable property in the county, it can provide some insight into the health of the real estate market. The Roll is also driven in large measure by real property sales, which added $69.6 billion to the Roll as compared with 2021; the CPI adjustment mandated by Prop. 13, which this year came in at 2%, added an additional $34.2 billion; and new construction added $6.3Finally,billion. as we move forward during this critical period, I wish for everybody to stay safe and healthy. This is a tumultuous time in our history. No question about that, but to repeat what has been said so many times before, during emergencies that demand the best from us, this could be our finest hour.

The council unanimous ly approved a framework in June calling for more coordination between city agencies to ensure more efficient implementation of the plan’s various parts, and for a prioritization of improvements in lowincome neighborhoods that have traditionally had a higher percentage of the city’s most dangerous thor oughfares.Theproposal was put forward by Martinez as it became apparent that the ordinance would soon come before the council. Council members generally supported the ordinance, but said the council action provided more strategy, framework and equity in enacting the mobility plan. “The council-led motion would ensure that the city implements the mobility plan in an equitable way,” Martinez said. “And equity has to be at its core.” Instead of adopting the ordinance immediately, the council voted 13-0 on Wednesday to place it on the 2024 ballot. Proponents of adopting the ordinance immediately say two years is too long to wait. “Every 30 hours, someone is injured or killed by traffic violence, and a pedestrian is killed once every three days,” Schnei der told CNS. “It’s not an exaggeration to say that literally every day that we wait, it’s hurting somebody. So we don’t want to wait a year and a half for safer streets.”Even with the approval of the mobility plan, Los Angeles has seen a 20% increase in traffic deaths over the past year, despite the city’s goal of elimi nating traffic deaths by 2025 through the Vision Zero initiative. According to Martinez’s office, 294 people were killed in traffic incidents last year, includ ing 132 pedestrians. The city Depart ment of Transportation formulated a High Injury Network map that shows the deadliest streets in the city, responsible for 70% of deaths and severe injuries, are in spentresourcesofsaid.that’swetheyitsto“notspend“tragic”transitpedestrians,makecanlishimprovementsselectSanAngelesLosneighborhoods”“working-classofSouthAngeles,CentralLosandthenortheastFernandoValley.Theframeworkwouldcorridorsforandestabstandardelementsthatbeimplementedtotheroutessaferforcyclistsandriders.Schneidersaiditisthatcitizenshadtomoneyandresourcesfortheirownplan,justgetthecitytoimplementownplanthattheysaidwanted.”“It’skindofabsurdthatliveinaplacewhereneeded,”Schneider“It’ssuchawastemoneyandtime,andthatcouldbeinotherways.Butit is what it is. Some supported adopting the motion immediately, while others wanted to send it to the “Iballot.cannot support this manufactured rush to adopt a policy that still needs much more love and work,” said John Yee, executive director of Los Angeles Walks. Yee said the ballot measure focuses on the city’s street resurfacing program, “which is failing working class Angelenos and transitMartinezriders.” and council members welcomed the petition, pledging to hold themselves accountable to speed up the enactment of the Mobility Plan. “We’re quick to put accountability on other people,” Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson said. “Where’s our account ability? Where’s ours?”

A measure that would fast-track implemen tation of Los Angeles’ ambitious mobility plan will come before voters in 2024, after the City Council voted to place it on the ballot Wednesday.Frustrated by what they see as a lack of progress on Mobility Plan 2035 — approved by the council in 2015 — a coalition of climate, transportation, business and labor groups led by Streets for All collect ed enough signatures and forced the city to take action on aThepetition.mobility plan called for large-scale construc tion of bike lanes, pedes trian routes and other street improvement measures to make Los Angeles roads less car-centric. Seven years later, the city has imple mented just 3% of the plan’s 1,500 miles of pedestrian safety improvements “I’m embarrassed and ashamed that since 2015, we’ve only been able to build 3% of the Mobility Plan,” Council President Nury Martinez said. “That is shameful.”TheHealthy Streets L.A. ballot measure would require the city to imple ment the applicable enhancements described in Mobility Plan 2035 whenever it paves or modifies at least 660 feet of a street. The city would have to provide updates on implementation of the plan on a website or open data portal. The ordinance would allow for anyone to sue the city if it doesn’t comply.“Unfortunately, the city really understands the language of lawsuits,” Michael Schneider, the founder of Streets for All, told City News Service. “We don’t want to sue the city. Our goal isn’t to get rich or to have lawyers get rich. But we needed something with teeth. Some enforcement mechanism that the city would understand and the city would want to avoid.”

Pelosi was joined by Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Los Angeles at the event. Gomez authored three climate action bills that were included in the legislation, including a bill that creates a tax credit for first-time buyers of used electric vehicles worth up to $4,000 or $30% of the sales price. Gomez called the Inflation Reduction Act a “remarkable bill” that will help transition to a green economy and the jobs of the future.

“We cannot tackle this problem if more and more people don’t participate in the green economy and if we make the green divide exist between the have and the have-nots,” Gomez said.

With amusement parks like Disneyland and Six Flags Magic Mountain getting more expensive for individu als and families as high infla tion and gas prices sap more and more pocketbooks, many are looking for entertainment in a cheaper, convenient way — no lines — and a thrilling multi-dimensional experi ence.“The RiDE 7D,” located at the Ontario Mills Mall, offers the immersive, interactive and motion thrills usually reserved for large amusement parks. But combining immer sive and interactive elements adds a new level of amuse ment and entertainment. For instance: Immersive “The RIDE 7D” goes beyond 3D, 4D and virtual reality by using a giant curved screen that is in close prox imity to the riders, which transports all into a multidimensional adventure. Interactive Most amusement park rides are passive, which means you just sit there and ride. “The RiDE 7D” takes interactive to the next level with laser blasters and realtime scoring, making this a virtual reality game and ride smashed together, much like a giant video game you are in. Motion Once strapped into “The RiDE 7D” motion seats, the ride serves up intense back-and-forth with sideto-side motion. Motion seats will make you feel as if you are falling or moving at high speeds feeling the gush of wind. For instance, imagine you are falling from a building, and you feel being nudged off your seat, although you are belted in of course. That’s another dimension offered by the motion ride. 7 themes to choose from Started in 2015, “The RIDE 7D” has been a mainstay at the conveniently located Ontario Mills Mall, with free parking and no reservations required. There are seven themed rides to choose from and each lasts 5 to 6 minutes. You can also choose from a few rides or all day or come reserve the entire facility for groups of 45 people or less. There seven different themes are:

The Inflation Reduction Act was the result of a balance between various groups, including the private sector, according to Pelosi. She said while great ideas were impor tant, it was just as pivotal to have the capital to turn ideas into reality and sell them in a marketplace.“Ithinkthat LACI is great example of knowing what the marketplace is, and what the traffic will bear in new ideas as quickly as possible, to lower cost and better paying jobs and safer communities in every way,” Pelosi said. Pelosi took a tour of the LACI facility on Thursday, and said afterwards there was “stiff” competition for her favorite“Everypart.place was perfect,” she said. “Each section of the tour complemented the other. All of it was fundamentally about justice, about inclu sion, about diversity. Not only changing the marketplace, but changing the workforce in a way that was what we had in mind (with the bill).”

Speaker Pelosi visits LA Cleantech Incubator, touts Inflation Reduction Act

S peaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator Thursday, where she highlighted the recent passage of the Inflation Reduction Act and praised the incubator for being a match for the sweeping legislation that is the largest investment in climate action in United StatesThehistory.LosAngeles Clean tech Incubator (LACI), founded in 2011, was the result of a public-private partnership with the city of Los Angeles and has helped 340 clean technology startups raise nearly $680 million over the last 10 years. Around $370 billion is in the legislation to address climate change, including funding for energy infra structure, tax incentives to build clean technology manufacturing facilities and grants for environmental justicePelosiinitiatives.saidLACI provided an “intellectual resource” about what to include in the bill, which passed Congress earlier this month without a single Republican vote.

Fulton has seen more lawmakers consulting scientists in helping develop policy.“It’s galvanizing, both in the state of California and our country as a whole that they see the need, the target and the focus for putting dollars behind that,” Fulton said.Pelosi said the bill includes the “moral justice of saying, `We’re starting with the community in develop ing this.’ Not trickling it down. but bringing it up.” She praised LACI and the city of Los Angeles for serving as an example for areas that the legislation will target.“Coming here to LACI is just the biggest celebration,” Pelosi said. “Los Angeles is big enough to be globally significant, but small enough to be resilient in trying new and different things, to be a model to the world.”

Brantly Fulton, CEO and co-founder of LAMAR IoT — a startup based in LACI that focuses on smart packaging solutions — said funding through LACI has helped his company hire interns. LAMAR IoT initially started at LACI through its innova tors program, before gradu ating to its incubation cohort where it received $20,000 in funding for a pilot program that helped it create a chip device.“I want to do good science before running a successful business and making money,” Fulton said to City News Service. “For me, it’s certainly energizing and joyous when you see so many initiatives now, both throughout the state but also throughout the country that are focused on impacting STEM and STEM education.”

DESCRIPTION:www.youtube.com/CityofSanGabrielTheCityCouncilwill consider an amendment to the City’s adopted Fee Schedule to include fees and admission cost for the City’s Dumpling and Beer Festival.
