SUPERINTENDENT/PRESIDENT

ince the outbreak of COVID-19, communities across the globe – including those in Southern California – have been faced with an unprecedented crisis. In response, Citrus College closed its campus and transitioned to remote delivery of instruction and student support services beginning March 18, 2020. As superintendent/president, it was a difficult decision to make, but the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff will always be the college’s top priority. As this public health emergency has temporarily altered the way we live and work, finding inspiration while adjusting to these new conditions has been challenging. However, our dedicated and passionate employees know that student success and completion is the driving force behind what we do. It is not just our motivation, it is also our guiding philosophy and our daily inspiration. I am proud to share that faculty and staff have managed to keep students actively engaged in their studies. Additionally, the Citrus College Foundation launched a campaign to help students access the equipment they need, the college earned a national award for innovative communication, and two members of the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees were honored for years of dedication and service to this institution. These small examples demonstrate the remarkable work being performed by Citrus College during this time. The positive attitude of our students, employees and governing board is a testament to the collaborative spirit of Citrus College. I am confident that, after we surmount this challenge, we will look back at this chapter and be proud that we did our very best to serve our students and advance the legacy of Citrus College.

On March 3, 2020, officers received a call for service regarding a sexual assault that occurred at a residence. Officers arrived and made contact with the victim, a 10-year-old female. They learned the suspect, identified as David Diaz; a 68-year-old resident of West Covina, was the victim's foster parent. Given the circumstances, the suspect was taken into custody pending further investigation. Detectives

El Monte High School seniors Juan Saucedo and Kermina Samaan took different paths to travel to the United States, learn a second language and acclimate to a new home. Still, the challenges they both faced only served to bolster their drive to graduate high school and attend a four-year university. Saucedo, who arrived from Mexico in 2017, and Samaan, who arrived from Egypt in 2015, both advanced quickly through El Monte High’s English language development (ELD) program, doubling up on English classes and taking summer school classes to complete their
