ORANGE COUNTY MAN CONVICTED OF SEXUALLY ASSAULTING TODDLER Social distancing for jurors allowed trial to continue despite COVID-19 pandemic
A
jury convicted a 23-year-old Buena Park man of sexually assaulting a two-year-old girl while he babysat her in 2016. Closing arguments were allowed to be given in front of a jury despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Arthur William Robert Callender was convicted on April 1, 2020 of two felony counts of sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10. Callender faces fifty years to life in state prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 12, 2020 in Department C44 at the Central Justice Center. Callender was arrested in October 2016 after officers working on a Task Force with the Department of Homeland Security launched an investigation into several inappropriate internet postings involving a female toddler. Callender’s trial was ongoing when the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court issued an unprecedented order on March 23, 2020 suspending jury trials be suspended for 60 days. Riverside County Man Arrested for Felony Warrants Thermal Station deputies responded to a report of a carjacking at gunpoint that occurred in the area of Harrison Street and Avenue 77th, in Thermal. The Suspect fled the scene in the stolen utility truck. The vehicle was located, an extensive search was conducted to locate the suspect, but the suspect evaded deputies. San Bernardino County Mountains Closed To Snow Play All ski resorts and snow play areas in San Bernardino County have been closed to protect public health during the coronavirus pandemic. Laws against parking on the roadside to play in the snow will be strictly enforced. “The mountains are closed to visitors for now,” San Bernardino County Second District Supervisor Janice Rutherford said. “Hotels, short-term
rentals, and non-essential businesses are closed, and the U.S. Forest Service has shut down its snow play areas to the public. There’s no reason to go up.” Motorists will likely be required to use snow chains because of expected winter driving conditions, and stranded drivers may have to wait for extended periods for assistance

Train Operator at Port of Los Angeles Charged with Derailing Locomotive A train engineer at the Port of Los Angeles was arrested this morning on federal charges for allegedly running a locomotive at full speed off the end of rail tracks near the USNS Mercy. Eduardo Moreno, 44, of San Pedro, was charged today in a criminal complaint with one count of train wrecking as a result of an incident Tuesday afternoon. According to the
criminal complaint filed in United States District Court, Moreno admitted in two separate interviews with law enforcement authorities that he intentionally derailed and crashed the train near the Mercy. Moreno ran the train off the end of tracks, and crashed through a series of barriers before coming
