5 New Cases of Measles

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has confirmed a local outbreak of measles among five persons. This outbreak includes four County residents, who were exposed to an unimmunized, international visitor who was infectious with measles while in Los Angeles County. Measles immunizations are available at healthcare providers, local pharmacy or health clinics. Public Health clinics offer no or low-cost immunizations for individuals who are uninsured or underinsured. County of Orange Premieres Opioid Misuse Prevention Campaign

Pointing people to the educational website – WrongForYou.com – the OC Health Care Agency (HCA) wants residents to understand the risks associated with taking opioids like hydrocodone, oxycodone and fentanyl. One key message of the adult-targeted campaign is that prescription opioid addiction and misuse does not discriminate. In fact, anyone can experience complications from opioid use. Anaheim Expands Partnership With Salvation Army to Combat Homelessness

Some 100 additional temporary homeless shelter beds are set to open in Anaheim in the next four months as part of Anaheim’s ongoing effort to address homelessness. The City Council approved expanding Anaheim’s partnership with The Salvation Army, which operates the Anaheim Emergency Shelter in an industrial part of the city. The action will add 101 beds for a total of 325 at the Anaheim Emergency Shelter and help address lingering issues of homelessness across the city with a focus on women, couples and families, including pets. In approving the additional Anaheim Emergency Shelter beds, the City Council turned down another proposal that called for the creation of a new shelter on Magnolia Avenue in west Anaheim.

First Round of Riverside County Mock Trial Competition Begins

A technology start-up founder of self-driving trucks accused of murdering a spouse is the focus of a fictitious court trial that 26 local high school teams will adjudicate at the 38th Annual Riverside County Mock Trial starting on Feb. 6, in Indio, Murrieta, and Riverside. Mock Trial involves students arguing cases in front of real judges, and scored by practicing attorneys. The competition is open to all students in grades 9 through 12 enrolled in public and private high schools in Riverside County. Teams consist of 8-25 students filling the courtroom roles of defense and prosecution attorneys, witnesses, clerks, and more. Mayor Says Strong Relationships Are the Foundation for Riverside’s Future Success

Mayor Rusty Bailey praised the city’s residents and business community for creating strong relationships that have helped Riverside overcome many obstacles in the past, and he encouraged Riversiders to use that “relational capital” to address the local impacts of a statewide housing crisis. “Relationships are like a form of concrete – mixed by common ground, problem solving and mutual benefit,” Bailey said. Bailey made the comments during the annual State of the City address, his final such address to the city. After two terms, Bailey is not seeking reelection and will leave office in 2020. He noted that Riverside is leading Inland Southern California in many economic indicators and that the city’s focus on intelligent growth and development has sparked almost $2 billion in private investment in the past five years. The Corona Historic Preservation Society (CHPS) invites the community to a panel discussion that will delve into the history of citrus ranches once found in Corona. "Life in the Citrus Ranches: Stories of Hope, Family and Community" will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020. The presentation will begin at 10 a.m. in the Community Room at the Historic Civic Center (815 W. 6th St.). The free presentation will feature former residents of citrus ranches. Artifacts and photographs will be on exhibit, but community members are also invited to bring their own items for display during the event. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.

Victor Valley Museum Hosts Arthropolooza: Ultimate Bugfest

Arthropolooza: the Ultimate Bugfest buzzes into the Victor Valley Museum on Saturday, Feb. 22, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum and local partners present demonstrations and hands-on activities with live insects, insect specimen displays, interactive bee activities, backyard conservation, composting demo, and more to engage and educate visitors participants about the Mojave Desert’s creepy crawlers, and an emphasis on established and endangered arthropod species in our region. The Victor Valley Museum is a branch of the San Bernardino County Museum located at 11873 Apple Valley Road in Apple Valley. Regular museum days and hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 (adult), $4 (senior or military), and $2.50 (student), EBT cardholders are $1.
