MALE JUVENILE EXTRADITED FROM VIRGINIA FOR 2018 AZUSA HOMICIDE
O
n November 21st, 2018, Azusa Police Officers responded to the 600 Block of N. Rockvale Avenue, Azusa, regarding a shooting which had just occurred. Upon arrival, Officers located one victim, Abel Balderas, who had been fatally shot. The Azusa Police Department requested the assistance of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau, who assumed control of the investigation. Since the onset of this investigation, the Azusa P.D. and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau have been working diligently to solve this murder. On January 21st, 2020, the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau extradited a male juvenile subject from Virginia for the homicide of Abel Balderas. The juvenile subject was booked into the Azusa jail. This arrest follows an arrest earlier this year of a second juvenile subject, who also participated in the homicide. The criminal case was presented to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, who filed one count of murder against each of the juvenile subjects. The subjects remain in custody at Juvenile Hall, without bail. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Azusa Police Department are committed to working together to resolve all homicides in the City of Azusa.

Free Performance Marks Debut of Riverside County HS Honor Band
Ending Orange County’s Rape Kit Backlog
The inaugural Riverside County High School Honor Band consisting of 79 students from 19 high schools in 17 Riverside County school districts will perform at 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at Palm Springs High School’s Richards Center for the Arts (2248 Ramon Road, Palm Springs). Admission is free. Assembling the best high school musicians from across Riverside County was the vision of Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Judy D. White. As part of her commitment to increasing student access to the visual and performing arts, the Riverside County Honor Band will be an annual collection of the top musicians in the region. Acceptance to the all-county band also provides a pathway for students to audition for regional and statewide honor bands. “Our intent was to have representation from every high school that had students auditioning. As it turns out, every high school that came out for auditions had at least one student who scored high enough with the adjudicators to be accepted to the program based on merit,” said Louisa Higgins, the Arts Administrator from the Riverside County Office of Education. “The experience should be challenging and rewarding for students as they
