PASADENA HIGH SCHOOL GYM AND ATHLETIC COMPLEX GETS A $19M MAKEOVER

asadena Unified School District (PUSD) officials joined Pasadena High School (PHS) students, staff, and parents at a ceremonial ribbon cutting and celebration of the newly remodeled Tom Hamilton Gymnasium at Pasadena High School on Tuesday. The ceremony was followed by the boys’ junior varsity basketball game at 3:30 p.m. and the boys’ varsity game at 5 p.m. “The renovation of the gymnasium delivers enhanced opportunities for the students of PHS to concurrently pursue excellence in academics and athletics,” said Superintendent Brian McDonald. The modernization of the 58,000-square-foot athletic complex includes the 8,800-square-foot gymnasium with a full-size basketball court, bleachers, lobby, concession stand, restrooms, and new entrance. The adjacent locker room area, which is slated for completion in early 2019, includes team rooms, administrative offices, and customized

Long-Awaited ShakeAlertLA Earthquake Early Warning App Now Available Story & Photos Terry MILLER tmiller@beaconmedianews.com
The ShakeAlert system developed by the U.S. Geological Survey has released ShakeAlertLA, a mobile app that sends alerts to users within Los Angeles County that an earthquake of greater than magnitude 5.0 or
level IV intensity has been detected and that they may soon feel shaking. The app is available for both Apple and Android devices and available in both English and Spanish. You can also use this app to prepare for an earthquake, get details on recent earthquakes, and find help after an earthquake. ShakeAlertLA is the result of a partnership between the City of Los Angeles and the U.S. Geological Survey’s ShakeAlert system in
partnership with Pasadena’s CalTech. That system has 400 sensors in California, Oregon, and Washington, which will supply the seismic data. The city spent about $300,000 for AT&T and the GRYD Foundation to build an app that can turn the data into mobile alerts This app is an official pilot in partner-
