Summer in town: Monrovia’s Welcome Wagon - won’t you be my neighbor Susie LING, GUEST CONTRIBUTOR
I
f you’ve moved to Monrovia after 2003, you may know about Monrovia’s unique Welcome Wagon. Over the last fifteen years, John Watson and Hal Leavens
collate information packets and plan their driving itinerary to go say “welcome neighbor” to new homeowners. They visit about three dozen homes each time, 15 times per year, for 15 years. That’s about 10,000 doors SEE MONROVIA MEN PAGE 10

MAP Block Party Will Unveil a Second Neighborhood Treasure Susan MOTANDER motander@yahoo.com
A block party has been planned for Aug. 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the 500 block of East Cypress Avenue. This Monrovia Area Partnership (MAP) party will be highlighted by the unveiling of a Neighborhood Treasure plaque in honor of Kate Wright. In addition to the plaque, an art piece in honor of and representing her life will
also be revealed. In the early 1900s, Monrovia was known for the great quality of its air and was recommended as a location for tuberculosis (TB) patients. Wright, who was known throughout the community as “Aunt Kate,” unselfishly worked for low-income residents who suffered from TB. She asked for no payment or government assistance; she just wanted to help SEE BLOCK PARTY PAGE 11

Monrovia Homeless Count Results Released
Event to be held on Aug. 25
Homeless on the streets - down, those living in their cars - up

Every summer the Monrovia Fine Arts Association (MAFA) hosts an “Art Walk” in Old Town Monrovia. The last of this year’s walks will be held on Aug. 25 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the 400 and 500 blocks of Myrtle Avenue.
These are the two blocks south of Library Park from Lime Avenue to Colorado Boulevard. This is a great chance to stroll among the shops in the evening when it is cooler, enjoy the art, and interact with other Monrovians. And it is far less crowded than during the Friday Night Festival.

At the end of last month, Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) released the official results of its 2018 homeless study. In Monrovia that study was conducted by 30 Monrovia volunteers on Jan. 23. The
count included those living on the streets, or in makeshift shelters such as tents, and those living in a car, van or RV/camper. LAHSA reported that the number of those living on the street went down to nine from 14 in 2017 and that of those living SEE HOMELESS COUNT PAGE 11
