rcadians Richard and Eric Dong, rising 12th grader and 11th grader at San Marino High School (SMHS), are continuing their philanthropic endeavors which they launched in 2014 with their first endowment fund at Clairbourn School in honor of then headmaster, Dr. Robert W. Nafie. Last Wednesday, August 8, they established The Richard and Eric Dong Endowment Fund for Union Station Homeless Services. During the endowment ceremony held in Pasadena, Richard said, “The fund is designed to provide scholarships for children in sports, music and the arts, leadership, and human rights promotion; to purchase books for the family library; to fund staff appreciation and recognition; and to finance the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights educational programs.” “It is in memory of Robert F. Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his last campaign and in honor of Mrs. Robert F. ARCADIA UNIFIED RANKED AS BEST PLACE TO TEACH IN LOS ANGELES Staff WRITER editorial@beaconmedianews.com

Arcadia Unified ranks as the best place to teach in the Los Angeles area for the second year in a row according to Niche.com. In the recent release of its 2019 school district rankings, Niche also noted Arcadia Unified as having the best teachers in Los Angeles. “Being named both the best place to teach and the district with the best teachers in Los Angeles helps us know we are achieving our purpose,” shared Arcadia Unified Assistant Superintendent, Human Resource Services Dr. Kevin

Hryciw. “We are committed to making our teachers feel supported, valued, and to maintaining a strong relationship with the Arcadia Teachers Association. Our goal with all of these efforts is to allow our teachers’ focus to be on what they entered our district to do - inspire students to have a positive and profound impact on their world.” This school year, Arcadia Unified welcomes 27 new educators, including school counselors, helping carry out Arcadia Unified’s Board of Education goal to have at least one full-time school counselor at each school site SEE ARCADIA UNIFIED PAGE 11

A local resident and volunteer for Arcadia Police department, Art Fry, recently approached Arcadia Weekly concerned that part of the original Santa Anita Inn is still standing while the contactors are prepping the site for the ambitious new mixed-use / hotel development known as Le Meridian – One Gallop Way. Apparently, that part of the 1955 building is slated for demolition in Phase Two of the project for the Hotel condo tower. The approved architectural design for the mixed-

use project was originally French Normandy architecture, with eight floors and measuring 95 feet in height as allowed under the H8 Height Overlay. Some of the attributes that lend to this style included pilasters; an accentuated chimney clad with stone veneer, as well as pronounced trim and strategically placed cornices. The façade of the building was adorned with many different forms such as cylindrical corner pieces and curvilinear balconies with decorative wrought-iron railings. Keck Medicine of USC Will Open in Arcadia This Fall Staff WRITER editorial@beaconmedianews.com

USC School of Medicine announced on May 31 that Keck Medicine will expand its network of ambulatory clinics with a 33,000-square-foot clinic at 125 W. Huntington Dr. The newly leased facility is expected to open this fall. “Keck Medicine of USC is in a period of unprecedented

growth, with demand increasing for our complex care,” said Shawn Sheffield, its chief strategy and business development officer, in a statement. The new clinic is to be home to family medicine and primary care doctors alongside specialists ranging from gastroenterology to colorectal cancer surgery. The facility is expected to serve more than 100,000 patients a year.
