Junior Researcher Summer Academy Underway at Oak Crest in Monrovia

T

his summer students, grades eight to 10, are getting the opportunity to learn real science at Oak Crest Institute. The city of Monrovia and the Institute are co-hosting a science academy for the

students, and at the same time giving older students a summer job through the city’s Youth Employment Services Program (YES). What these young people are doing is mind boggling. The older students were hired by the city and trained by the Oak Crest staff to use SEE OAK CREST PAGE 10

Summer in Town: Fonzo and Old Town Bistro in Monrovia Susie LING, GUEST CONTRIBUTOR Monrovia Trivia Question: Who is Fonzo? Well, of course Fonzo is the life-size chef statue in front of Old Town Bistro on Myrtle Avenue. This restaurant was opened in 2011 by the husband and wife team, Soren and Sunday Loft. It should be noted that their third chef with 2 percent ownership – and the person who named Fonzo – is their

daughter, Sydney. Sunday Loft said, “I was raised in restaurants. My grandmother was a waitress and she would take me to work with her. At 18, I started waitressing at Salt Shakers in South Pasadena. When Mimi’s opened on Huntington Drive in the 1980s, I moved there. When I turned 21, I worked for the brand new nightclub in the Holiday Inn – which is where SEE SUMMER IN TOWN PAGE 11

The Taylor Performing Arts Center is hosting another professional production for the community this weekend: “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat” opens tonight and runs through Sunday. The retelling of the biblical story of Joseph, son of

Jacob, and the jealousy of his eleven half-brothers is a fun, rollicking musical. It even features a chorus of Monrovia school children acting as a sort of Greek chorus throughout the production.
