ACLU of California Statement on Riverside Unified Sanctuary Policy Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) Board of Education unanimously approved a campus sanctuary policy. The new board policy expands upon a prior resolution declaring the district and all campuses as Safe Learning Zones for all students, staff, and families. The following are statements from the ACLU of California. Linnea Nelson, education equity staff attorney at the ACLU of Northern California. “We applaud the Riverside Unified School District’s action to counteract immigration enforcement in its schools. The District has shown its leadership in California by taking concrete steps to welcome all students, regardless of their immigration status. We call on the district to further strengthen those protections by extending it to law enforcement activity that does not have a school-related purpose. In this era of greatly-expanded immigration enforce-

ment, student information gathered by police in the schools may inadvertently be shared with federal agencies, with potentially devastating consequences for immigrant students and their families.” Hannah Comstock, Loyola Law School Postgraduate Public Interest Fellow at the ACLU of Southern California. “The presence of immigration agents is disruptive to the learning environment and flies in the face of children’s right to equal educational opportunity as guaranteed by the U.S. and California Constitutions. We encourage the district to take the next important step in protecting its students by closing this loophole and ensuring that all law enforcement agencies operating in its schools adequately protect students’ personal information from unintentional disclosure to federal immigration agencies. School districts have a duty to protect students from harassment and ensure they feel safe.”

Davenport Park Walking Path Grand Opening Ceremony The public is invited to attend a grand opening ceremony for the new walking path at Ed “Pops” Davenport Park on Saturday, September 30 at 11:00 a.m., 2910 E. 55th Way. “The opening of the Davenport Park walking path displays Long Beach’s commitment to keeping families and neighborhoods healthy,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “As cities continue to grow, it’s crucial to provide residents with access to recreational opportunities with open green spaces that make residents feel safe and at home.”

The new 2,200-foot-long, decomposed granite walking path will activate the development of Phase II of Davenport Park, which began in 2016 to build the park out to Paramount Avenue on the park’s western border. Once completed, the combined 11.5acre park space will provide a much-needed neighborhood park in a park deficient area of north Long Beach. “I was excited to work with the community on the conceptual plan for the second phase of Davenport Park’s SEE PAGE 3

LA County’s Sales Tax for Homeless Services Takes Effect October 1, 2017 The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) reminds Californians that the Measure H Sales Tax for Homeless Services and Prevention, which was approved by voters on March 7, 2017, will go into effect on October 1, 2017, throughout Los Angeles County, with the following exceptions. The .25 percent tax will not be imposed in the cities of Compton, La Mirada, Long Beach, Lyn-

wood, Pico Rivera, Santa Monica, and South Gate because doing so would cause the rate in those cities to exceed the 10.25 percent maximum tax rate allowed under the law in Los Angeles County. If and when an existing tax in one of these cities expires, the Measure H tax will be imposed in that city immediately. To find the correct rate for your home or busiSEE PAGE 2
