The Battleship IOWA Museum Honors Women’s History Month With Temporary Display Open Through March 31 The Battleship IOWA Museum has opened a new temporary display entitled “Celebrating the American Spirit – Battleship IOWA Salutes Women’s History Month,” that will be part of the ship’s tour through March 31. Guests will get a glimpse into the achievements women have made in the United States Navy and in service for their country. The exhibit focuses on several pioneering women. Amongst those women are: Harriet Tubman, an American abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War; Sally Ride, the first American woman in space; Geraldine Ferraro, the first female vice presidential candidate representing a major American political party; Michelle Howard, first woman to be promoted to fourstar Admiral in Navy history; and Bernice “Bee” Haydu,
one of the first women to fly American military aircraft “We are excited to celebrate Women’s History Month with this wonderful display. Our hope is to educate the public about some of the impressive accomplishments made by women in the service of their country,” said Sue Schmidt, Volunteer Coordinator. “Women have always played an integral role in the history of the United States.” Throughout the month of March, Battleship IOWA will dedicate social media posts to recognize the contributions that women have made in service of the United States. Fifth-Grade Student to Represent San Gabriel Unified at LA County Spelling Bee
Coolidge Elementary fifth-grader Ryan Yan will represent San Gabriel Unified School District at the 12th Annual Los Angeles County Elementary Spelling Bee on March 29 after taking top honors in the school spelling contest. Yan faced off for 13 rounds with other fourthand fifth-graders in friendly competition at the 10th Annual Coolidge Spelling Bee on Feb. 24, ultimately winning the contest for the second consecutive year. Fourth-graders Dorian Gamero and Kyle Tang took second and third place respectively. “I’m really excited to go to the County Bee again, but I want to win first place this year,” Yan said. Yan won last year’s Coolidge contest and placed second in the 2016 LA County Spelling Bee. This earned him an invitation to the California State Spelling Bee, where he
