Santa Fe Middle School Students Participate in 31st Science Olympiad at Occidental College

“M
ission Possible” was the name of one of last year’s team’s science project at Santa Fe Middle School (SFMS) in preparation for the Science Olympiad. The students this year are again getting ready to compete at the Science Olympiad at Occidental College on Saturday. The name says it all … anything is possible if you put your mind to it and that is exactly what the teachers at Santa Fe Middle School encourage their students to do … think way outside of the box. The Science Olympiad is an international, nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops, and the encouragement of intramural, district, regional, state, and national tournaments. The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous, academic, interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year. a great deal about time management. The pace at the competition is fast, spirited and the time is limited for the students to demonstrate their particular project. For example, one team is limited to eight minutes to prove that a raw egg would not crack during the experiment. Each year there are approximately 23 challenging and motivational events that are drawn from the various disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, and technology. There is a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts processes, skills, and science applications. Santa Fe’s team scored two medals in individual events, 2nd place medal for “Write It Do It” and a 5th place medal for “Mission Possible” and ranked 13th overall among the 40 schools competing on March 4th. “Write It Do It” is an event where one student must write a description of an object and how to build it, and then the other student must construct the object solely from that written description. This is made more complex as no drawings or symbols are allowed in the written description. "Mission Possible" is an event where the students must design, build, test, and document a Rube SEE PAGE 10

Monrovia Old Town Report It’s almost spring – Sunday ushers in Daylight Savings Time – and I love the energy in Old Town. Projects that were on hold for the holidays and delayed because of the rain are now in full swing. The construction at Copper Still Grill is now actively visible SEE PAGE 19
Monrovia Candidates’ Statements
Tom Adams Almost two years ago Monrovia gave me an opportunity to change the direction our city was headed in and I thank everyone for their trust. The time has passed quickly and now I ask for your trust again for there is much to do. I am very proud that working together with the City Council and our staff these things are being addressed. We have our plan to SEE PAGE 19
