Two Police Officers Shot In Whittier – One 27 Year Veteran Dead

Whittier police officer was killed and a second officer was wounded in a shootout with a suspect Monday according the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s dept. The shooting was reported shortly around 8:30 AM Monday near Colima Road and Mar Vista Street. Officers initially were responding to what they thought was a routine car accident. Upon arrival, a known gang-member opened fire at a Whittier Police vehicle. Two Whittier Police Department Officers were struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospitalOne officer has died as a result of the shooting Detectives have learned that the suspect rear-ended another car on Colima Road and Mar Vista Street, Whittier. The suspect exited his car and asked the people from the vehicle he hit to help push his car out of the intersection. The suspect pushed his car around the corner onto Mar Vista Street. Two Officers contacted the suspect. As they were getting him out of his car the suspect produced a handgun and started shooting at the officers. The officers
returned fire and during the exchange both officers and the suspect were shot. Other officers arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody. Both officers were transported to the hospital, where one died from the injuries and the other is in stable condition. The suspect was also transported to the hospital and is in stable condition. The suspect is a known gang member on parole on early release. The vehicle he was in was stolen earlier today out of East Los Angeles. A handgun was recovered at the scene… The two officers had responded in separate patrol cars to a report of the traffic accident. They were attempting to pat down the suspect when they were shot, said Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Police returned fire, wounding the suspect, who was described by officers as a Hispanic man with extensive tattoos. The two officers and the suspect were taken from the scene to a nearby hospital. Duarte Man Shot and Killed in Drive-by Shooting Saturday Night Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and detectives are continuing to search for suspect(s) in a fatal drive-by shooting of a 39-year-old man Saturday night in Duarte. The victim and his wife pulled into their driveway around 8PM when the couple got out of the car a white vehicle pulled up outside their house on Bashor Street, according to a news release sent out via Nixle. The couple proceed to the house and shots were fired. The suspects immediately fled the scene. The victim has been identified as Kirinda Lavar Morehead of Duarte. Morehead’s wife was unharmed. Morehead was pronounced dead at the scene. The white vehicle fled west on Bashor Street and was last seen heading north on Mount Olive Drive.
Mass Resignations of Members of Commission on Asian-Americans
Recently, ten members of the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders submitted their resignations to President Trump. This move comes less than a month after the resignation of six other Commissioners, who resigned on January 20, 2017, despite having terms that do not officially end until September 30, 2017. Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), released the following
statement: “The en masse resignations of these 10 Commissioners speak volumes about the depth of opposition to President Trump’s recent actions, especially in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.
