The Director of the Library and Museum Retires

ary Beth Hayes, Director of the Arcadia Public Library and Museum is retiring. “I just felt that it was time. I felt that I have done what I want to do here and I feel like the library and the museum are both doing well and that it was time to hand the baton off,” says Hayes. Though she always loved reading and libraries, Hayes did not set out to become a librarian. In fact, Hayes was working in another field with a degree in Music Therapy when a position opened up at her local library in Michigan. “It was the first job I’d ever had (where) I just felt like it was a good fit for me and that it was where I belonged.” So she went back to school, got her Master’s Degree and began training to be a librarian. At Least Three People Killed in Rollover Accident in Arcadia On Tuesday at about 1:50 a.m., officers from the Arcadia Police Department responded to a traffic collision at the intersection of Live Oak Avenue and Las Tunas Drive. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered an overturned vehicle with several occupants inside. Arcadia Fire Department personnel extricated
one occupant who was transported to a local hospital with significant injuries. The remaining three occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene. This is an ongoing investigation and the names of the involved persons are not being released pending notification of the next of kin. The investigation is being handled by the Arcadia
Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team. Preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle traveling west on Live Oak Avenue near Las Tunas Drive may have lost control, collided with a wall causing the vehicle to overturn. Anyone with information on this incident is

band moved to Arcadia so he could finish his degree, only intending to stay a year. But “we were captured by the California lifestyle and weather.” Hayes began working at the Public Library 27 years ago, when they only had one computer. “We were really a traditional library (in that) we had books—and that was really about it.” One of the highlights of her career has been being part of the evolution of libraries into “community gathering place(s)” with many different programs. “We are much more than just books now,” and, she adds, “We certainly have a lot more than one computer.” “Libraries have changed so much and it has been really interesting and challenging to be part of that change. Arcadia warns residents of recent burglaries The Arcadia Police Dept. has taken a proactive approach to fighting residential burglaries which have been occurring regularly in the neighborhood near Duarte and Second Avenue.
