Old Town Report

The 40th Rededication of Allensworth State Historic Park Recognizes Monrovia’s Role in Colonel’s Life

BY PAM FITZPATRICK I’ve told this story before, but it’s worth retelling: many years ago our first family retail store in Old Town Monrovia specialized in dolls, dolls, and dolls – and anything related to dolls. Dolls were a hot market item in those days. SEE PAGE 12

This past week, Monrovia made progress towards completing the planned Hillside Wilderness Preserve improvements. In particular, the four new gates at the Ridgeside and Cloverleaf Access Points have all been installed, and by the end of next week, the gate installation work should be completed. In addition, the trail repair work Monrovia initiated is progressing well, and the team has made significant progress clearing brush and repairing the trail system. Staff had a chance this past week to tour the upgraded trail system, which provides terrific views of the valley and will serve as a great passive recreational hiking trail for our community. Based on progress to date, all identified work should be completed within the two weeks, and everything is currently on track for us to be able to open the access points located at Ridgeside and Cloverleaf by the end of this month. Everything is on schedule and it will be completed. Be prepared for the new improvements.

BY TERRY MILLER On Oct. 8, Ralph Walker from Monrovia’s KGEM attended the 40th rededication of Allensworth State Park in Tulare County, CA. The historic significance of Allensworth to Monrovia is well-documented.

Mayor Tom Adams sent the following letter to the organizers of the event: “As one of the many places that Colonel Allensworth spent part of his life in, the City of Monrovia is pleased with the rededication of the Colonel Allensworth State Park. Any effort to cast a brighter light on the good deeds of the Colonel is to be commended.

Unfortunately due to distance, no one of an official capacity could be in attendance but we sent a good friend of Monrovia to help with the honor and celebration. Ralph Walker has been a friend to Monrovia for decades and has helped to shine a brighter light SEE PAGE 13
