CAL FIRE Increases Staffing in Preparation for Santa Ana Winds CAL FIRE has increased firefighter staffing in preparation for several days of Santa Ana winds and extreme fire conditions in Southern California. The National Weather Service has issued several “Red Flag Warnings” and “Fire Weather Watches” due to low humidity and gusty winds that could reach up to 55mph. The warnings went into effect today and are expected to last through Sunday. They include the mountains and valleys of Ventura, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange and San Diego counties. The Santa Ana Wildfire Threat Index is now showing a “High” category for many areas. “Traditionally, late September through midNovember is Santa Ana season,” said Chief Thom Porter, CAL FIRE Southern Region chief. “Many of the State’s largest and most damaging wildfires coincide SEE PAGE 4

SBCUSD Schools Recognized for Efforts to Promote Positive Behavior If this were the Olympics, then almost every school in the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD) would be standing on the podium receiving a medal. The California PBiS Coalition honored a total of 14 SBCUSD schools with Silver Recognition for their implementation of the Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBiS) program. The Coalition honored 52 SBCUSD schools with Bronze Recognition. The goal of PBiS is to create a safe and welcoming school culture where all

staff work together to support students as they learn to be socially and behaviorally successful - not just in school but for life. Rather than focusing on a long list of prohibitions (Don’t Hit, Don't Be Disruptive), staff at PBiS schools focus on modeling, teaching, and practicing three to five positively stated expectations - like Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful. Within this context, students are taught and coached to use such skills as keeping hands to yourself and staying on task. Staff at PBiS schools
commit to using strategies that research has found to be effective in encouraging appropriate behaviors and discouraging inappropriate behaviors, thus avoiding an over-reliance on the use of punishments and penalties. Research has shown that when such practices are put in place within a safe and welcoming culture, the majority of students successfully demonstrate high expectations being modeled, taught, and coached by staff. Baldwin Park Unified Santa Fe School District Celebrates 25th Anniversary Baldwin Park Unified Santa Fe School District provides focus on STEM topics for elementary, middle school students. BPUSFSD will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a party for students, parents, staff, alumni and community members featuring food, games, music and a photo booth. Santa Fe offers a unique configuration in Baldwin Park Unified, serving students in grades three to eight with a special focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics.
