Community Meeting on ‘710 Tunnel’ Set for Sept. 15

BY GUS HERRERA The Pasadena City Council recently took the time to re-assess its public hearing procedures, following overwhelming public outcry in response to the Kimpton/YWCA Hotel Project public hearing on Aug. 15. The controversial project, which was ultimately approved by council and will most likely begin construction within the next six months, was confronted with significant public opposition. The weekend before the project went before council, dozens of protesters and preservationists gathered in front of city hall to stage a “picnic protest.” Resistance carried over into the council chambers - according to longtime community activist Christle Balvin, the Kimpton/ YWCA Project public hearing packed the house, “If the council chambers seat roughly 160 people, every seat was filled, with about 20 folks clinging to the walls.” Unfortunately, all those in attendance had to wait several hours before being allowed to speak. not aware of that history and some said they just thought trying out for the court was a “great way to meet girls.” The candidates, identified only by a number, were SEE PAGE 12

The public is invited to a community meeting on the proposed 710 tunnel project at the Pasadena Convention Center Ballroom, 300 E. Green St., from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 15. The meeting is sponsored by District 6 Council Member Steve Madison. The event titled, “The Pasadena Way … Or Their Highway,” will cover topics of connectivity, clean air, the tunnel, trucks, and tolls. There will be free, 90-minute parking, with validation, available across the street at the Paseo Colorado garage. For more information on the meeting, contact Taka Suzuki, District 6 Liaison, via email at tsuzuki@ cityofpasadena.net or by calling (626) 744-4739.
