New El Monte K-9 Officer Makes Debut

This presentation will provide valuable information for those working in or attending schools, churches, office settings, and other similar venues.

The Sierra Madre Police Department (SMPD) would like to invite the community to attend an important informational presentation

on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sierra Madre City Hall Council Chambers (242 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.). This SMPD presenta-

tion is intended to provide the public with guidance on how to prepare for and respond to active shooter crisis situations. It will provide

valuable information for those working in or attending schools, churches, office settings, and other similar venues.

A Final Update From Temple City’s Sister City Ambassadors BY NATALIE SCIGLIANO AND NICOLE KIMIJIMA It seems like only yesterday that we departed for Australia and now we are back

home. In our final week we had a sleepover at the home of Bridget Smither’s, whose son Tom was an exchange student last year. That night we shared the

American tradition by singing along to “High School Musical” movies and showed the Aussies that regardless of the cold we’re always eager to go swimming.

The following morning we were off to visit the stadium and training grounds constructed for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. We then played aqua golf and shopped until

we dropped at Penrith Plaza. Later that week we took a trip to the breathtaking beach of Bondi for a day of SEE PAGE 15

The El Monte Police Department officially welcomed aboard its newest K-9 officer, Rico, to the police force on Aug. 16 during a presentation at the city council meeting. Rico, an 18-month-old Malinois from the Czech Republic, completed his training at Adlerhorst International Inc. in Jurupa Valley. El Monte officers selected Rico for his skills and high ranking over other police service-trained dogs. He will serve as an apprehension search dog under the supervision and handling of Officer Adam Girgle, who has been with the police department since 2003. The pair is currently enrolled in a six-week basic training class where law enforcement personnel are intensively trained in the hanSEE PAGE 15
