Labor Day With the City Council
Labor Day is right around the corner. More than just the end of summer or the last day to wear white, the holiday is a hard-earned celebration of American workers. The first Labor Day celebration took place in New
York on Sept. 5, 1882. The labor movement started the holiday during the height of the industrial revolution, when workers labored under unsafe conditions and days off were few and far between.
According to the History Channel’s website, back then, “the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks in order to eke out a basic living.” Twelve years later in SEE PAGE 14
