Teacher Recruitment and Training Bills Advancing State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson recently announced that legislation is advancing at the state capitol to help address a growing shortage of teachers in California. Several bills moved forward last

week as the legislature faced a bill deadline. Torlakson spoke in favor of the legislation at a capitol news conference earlier in the year, when legislators introduced new measures to recruit more educators and help them earn teaching credentials.

“I will continue to work with all members of the legislature who want to help talented and committed people enter this rewarding profession,” said Torlakson, who started his career as a science teacher and coach. “I am spreading the message

San Gabriel Mission High School Celebrates 63rd Graduation

May 26 marked the 63rd graduation ceremony of San Gabriel Mission High School (SGMHS), an IB World School, which was held at the historic San Gabriel Playhouse. This year there were 66 graduates and 100 percent of the graduates will be at-

tending college. The commencement speaker was Susan A. Cortes McDade, an SGMHS alumna from the class of 1998. McDade graduated from San Francisco State University and earned a master’s in social work from New York University.

Currently, she spearheads Long Beach Unified School District’s first Foster Youth Program. The valedictorian for the class of 2016 was Ashley Lanuza. The salutatorian was Loklam (Katy) Kwan. Both graduates will be attending UCLA in the fall.

Del Mar Avenue Pavement Rehabilitation Project Begins in San Gabriel June 13 This project will include pavement reconstruction on Del Mar Avenue from Mission Road to Chestnut Avenue and is scheduled for completion by fall 2016. It will be the first of three phases in the Del Mar Avenue Pavement Reha-

bilitation Project, which will ultimately include street resurfacing from Mission Road to the 10 Freeway. The final phase of the project will be completed in 2018. The first phase of the project will cost approximately $800,000. The entire

three-phase paving project will cost a total of $3.8 million. The city will fund the project with a loan from the California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank, paid back by Measure SEE PAGE 17
