US War Department Honors Local Father-Son Duo

Embree Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3208 invites patriots, families, and friends to attend a Memorial Day Ceremony honoring our deceased War Veterans at Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery on Monday, May 30, at 11 a.m. Please arrive early to get a seat. In recent years, the ceremony has attracted standing-room only crowds. A sandwich lunch will be served following the

The United States War Department recently provided white marble headstones for two local veterans of the last century’s world wars for their family plot in Pioneer Cemetery. One marks the grave of Aubrey C. Young Sr., who served as a private in the US Army Signal Corps in France during World War I and the other his son’s, Second Lieutenant Aubrey C. Young Jr., who co-piloted a B-17 over Germany in World War II. Aubrey Sr. was assigned to the Third Balloon Company and saw action in the major American-Allied offensives of 1918 – the St. Mihiel Salient and the Meuse-Argonne. The Meuse-Argonne Offensive was the largest in United States military history, involving 1.2 million American soldiers, and brought the war to an end. The battle also cost 26,277 lives, and 95,786 wounded, making it the largest and bloodiest operation of the war for the American Expeditionary Forces and the deadliest in US history. In 1923 Aubrey Sr., known as Cy, moved his wife Grace and infant son Aubrey Jr., from his birthplace and parent’s home in Alliance, Neb., to California. Sierra Madre Post Office Has New Name in Honor of Veteran Louis Van Iersel

On Tuesday, May 24, the House of Representatives unanimously approved a bill to rename the Sierra Madre post office after Sergeant Louis Van Iersel, an immigrant, father, husband, and veteran who lived in Sierra Madre. The bill was introduced by Representative Judy Chu (CA-27) who represents the area.

Rep. Chu released the following statement: “Sergeant Louis Van Iersel’s life was the true example of the American Dream. As an immigrant, he immediately sought to serve his new country and did so with incredible valor and heroism. Not in just one World War, but two.
