The Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team (SMSR) is celebrating its 65th year in servicing our communities. On Saturday, May 21, the team is celebrating with an open house at the Rescue Station at 1901 Stonehouse Road in Sierra Madre, just west of Santa Anita off of Grandview. From noon to 4 p.m., the team will be showing its vehicles, rescue gear, and has planned kid's activities, a BBQ, raffle, and demonstrations. This fun event is open to all without charge. From its inception, SMSR has operated as a non-profit, all-volunteer, mountain search and rescue team. It responds to over 100 call-outs per year, usually involving lost or injured hikers. A typical operation can be as short as three hours and as long as four days. Members are all-volunteer and dedicate thousands of hours to helping those in need in both our local mountains and throughout the state. Members are trained in SEE PAGE 15
