Recently a group of Asian American elementary students learned how to dance ballet Folklorico, as part of a program to learn about the different cultures. Only two Hispanic girls were in the group, they were taught by a sports coach who has a passion for performing arts. All members of the Folklorico club are in elementary school and are ready to perform again at the Monterey Park Parade on May 14 and again on May 21 in Rosemead. The club began about two months ago as they prepared for a performance for Woodcraft Rangers’ International Day in April. The club is taught by Gloria Cervantes, the Woodcraft Rangers sports coach, who researched the dance and taught the kids. The program took off with a great response and now has flourished into a new club at Emerson Elementary, as they learn about different cultures. They are practicing daily during the after-school program. They are set for their next performances at Woodcraft Rangers’ NVision Day on May 21 at Garvey Intermediate at 10:30 a.m. in the City of Rosemead and for the Garvey School District Gala on May 25.
