Access Points to the Wilderness Preserve Defined

U.S. Green Building Council Awards Foothill Gold Line Rail Facility LEED Gold Certification Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority has announced that the U.S. Green Building Council awarded the Foothill Gold Line Operations Campus main shop building its Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certifica-
tion. The recognition for the 132,000 square foot building is one of the highest levels of achievement in sustainable design available, and makes it the first of its kind to receive the distinction. LEED is a green building certification program that recognizes
best-in-class building strategies and practices. “We challenged ourselves to look for ways to reduce the environmental footprint of the facility, because we believed that the SEE PAGE 17

At its last meeting, the Monrovia City Council voted to approve the funds to purchase easements from two residents and expend monies for other improvements to open an additional access point to Monrovia’s Hillside Wilderness Preserve (HWP). This has raised questions regarding the access to the preserve. The city’s website indicates that there are four access points outlined in the Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the Preserve, but that currently only two are open to the public. A search of the city’s website failed to produce a map except one in the RMP for the trails in the preserve. This map is grainy and illegible, but seems to indicate further access to the park from both Monrovia Canyon Park and Arcadia’s Wilderness Park. That city website lists the access points as: - Sleepy Hollow: located off Norumbega Drive (west of Starlit Lane). SEE PAGE 16

I always find it interesting to hear how larger chain stores and restaurants are faring in this unpredictable economy - and to get their take on what they think they need to do to increase their share of the market.
