The Historic Santa Fe Depot’s Future

It has taken quite some time to get the historic Santa Fe Depot recognized as a landmark, but now, finally it seems the city is speeding up the long awaited process.
Monrovia City Council Ensures Access to Wilderness and Discusses Homeless Situation BY SUSAN MOTANDER Prior to the city council meeting this past Tuesday, April 5, the internet was busy with emails regarding the purchase of easements to allow access to the Hillside Wilderness Preserve (HWP), but it was the question of
the homeless in Monrovia and most specifically Library Park that garnered the greatest attention at the meeting. The purchase of easements from Tyler Baze and the Delores Hanson Reid Living Trust at the beginning of the Cloverleaf Access Point (CAP) garnered praise for
Oliver Chi and the city staff, without any negative comments. This was not true of the report from Police Chief Jim Hunt regarding the Homeless and Park Conduct Committee that drew the greatest response.

During the past several months, Monrovia City Staff has been working to landmark the city’s historic Santa Fe Depot facility located at Station Square. As part of that process, the historic preservation commission (HPC) considered the matter and voted to recommend that the facility be granted landmarked status at their meeting on March 23, 2016. This means that on April 19, 2016, the city council will consider designating the Monrovia Santa Fe Depot as Historic Landmark number 137. In addition to landmarking the Historic Santa Fe Depot, the HPC has formed a subcommittee to interface with the development team (Daylight Limited) that was selected to rehabilitate and adaptively reuse the facility. Daylight Limited team will be ready to submit a formal application to the entire HPC in May 2016 to consider approving a certificate of appropriateness for the pro-

I was just having a fun conversation with one of my pals in Old Town – a long time local business owner, friend and, at times, partner in crime – well, not really crime … “mischief” is a better word. I asked him, “what’s new,” and he proceeded to tell me an hour’s worth of great information I cannot put in print. That is the beauty of
