George Fasching Leads Campaign to Get Denny’s to Fire Up Historic Van De Camp Windmill BY TERRY MILLER
The original Van de Kamp windmill, seen here on Monday evening at sundown, may soon be in motion again if George Fasching has anything to say about it, and he does.
Van de Kamp’s Holland Dutch Bakery, founded in 1915, was a Los Angeles institution for much of the twentieth century. Its trademark Dutch windmill appeared on its bakeries
and coffee shops across the region, but today only one windmill survives intact, atop a Denny’s on the corner of Huntington and Santa Anita avenues. According to LA Con-
servancy, the building was completed in 1967 and was designed by Pasadena architects Harold Bissner and Harold Zook. It features a large update of the company’s Dutch windmill sitting
atop the building’s circular folded-plate roof. You have to hand it to former Mayor of Arcadia, George Fasching: Not only does he keep our horseless carriages shining brightly
Arson Suspect in Custody After Fire at Monrovia High School BY SUSAN MOTANDER
At 12:23 a.m. early Monday morning, an arson fire was set at Monrovia High School. A 17-year-old MHS student is already in custody, according to Monrovia Police Chief Jim Hunt. “It was lucky there was a witness who called 911 and the fire department was able to get there quickly and contain the fire,” Chief Hunt said. He also said that the witness has spoken with the police and that as a result the suspect is already in custody. Hunt explained that since the suspect is a juvenile his identity cannot be released, but said that he remains in cus-
tody at the Eastlake Juvenile facility. The fire broke out in the counseling offices on the first floor of the main building and spread to the upper story. According to staff at the high school, the power has been shut off in the main building and will remain off until the fire department completes its investigation. The school district engineers will then be able to assess whether the power can be safely restored. Classes remain in full session even though half the campus has been closed ac-

Just before closing on Monday night, a thief grabbed two expensive hoverboards and ran out the door at the Dollmakers’ Kattywompas on Myrtle Avenue in Old Town Monrovia. According to Pam Fitzpatrick, one of the owners of the popular toy/ music store, the man chatted for a few minutes with Cindy Ranger, Fitzpatrick's sister and another owner who was working in the shop that evening. After striking up a really friendly conversation with
Cindy, talking about his wife and teenage daughters, he abruptly picked up two $500 hoverboards, said “Sorry,” and ran straight out the door with them and down Myrtle Ave. The suspect is Hispanic, in his 40s, about 5’ 6”, with a heavy build. Fortunately the store has a security camera and the man’s face was captured on the video. According to Chief of SEE PAGE 19
