City Manager, Michael Beck to Leave Pasadena BY TERRY MILLER City Manager, Michael Beck to Leave Pasadena in February to take an administrative position at UCLA. Beck first joined the city in 2008. His last day will be Feb. 14, 2016. In March, Beck will become UCLA’s Administrative Vice Chancellor. Here’s a copy of Michael Beck’s letter: Nov. 20, 2015 “Dear Colleagues, Since arriving in the City of Pasadena in 2008, I have worked hard on behalf of our citizens and all of you to ensure we fulfill the City's mission of delivering exemplary municipal services responsive to our entire community, consistent with our history, culture and unique character. We have invested in our programs, services, capital infrastructure, and facilities to improve the lives of those who call Pasadena home. We have ensured that Pasadena retains its enviable reputation as a premiere destination for leisure, tourism, hospitality, arts, entertainment, education, innovation, design, and quality living. We have certainly faced many challenges over the

years, but I take great pride in our accomplishments and I am so grateful for the cooperation and dedication of our employees and the leadership of our elected officials who have allowed the City to continue to redefine excellence. I write to inform you that I will be leaving my position as City Manager effective Feb. 14, 2016, to embark on the next chapter of my professional journey. Beginning on March 1, 2016, I will assume the role of Administrative Vice Chancellor at UCLA. When I was first approached about the opportunity at UCLA my inclination was to graciously decline to pursue it, as I believe we have more work to do in Pasadena and I love my job as your City Manager. However, as I engaged in further discussions with my family and with UCLA, I came to the conclusion that this is an exciting professional opportunity for me, and although there is never a good time to leave, I am confident that the City of Pasadena is on the right SEE PG.5

Rep. Adam Schiff (DCA), the Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement after voting against H.R. 4038, the American SAFE Act: “Concerns about security after the nightmare we saw in Paris are understandable, and safety must come first. As the Ranking Member on the Intelligence Committee, I continually review the dangers facing the country and our vulnerabilities and what I can say is this: There are persistent threats to the country from ISIS, Al Qaeda and homegrown extremists, but they do not come from women and children fleeing
the violence in Syria. "On average, it takes one and a half to two years to be vetted and come to the United States as a refugee. Of the approximately 2,000 Syrian refugees resettled in the United States since the civil war began in that country, none has been arrested for a terrorism related offense; None. “Refugees, and refugees from this region specifically, already undergo a far more rigorous screening process than anyone else seeking admission to this country, including multiple layers of background checks, in-depth national security vetting, SEE PG.3
A Downey police officer was fatally shot while sitting in his personal vehicle in the police station's parking lot last Wednesday, and investigators detained several people and continued searching for others in connection to the deadly incident till the next morning, according to LASD. Ricardo Galvez, was parked in an unmarked vehicle in the police station’s lot, located in the 10900 block of Brookshire Avenue, when two people ran up and
opened fire around 11 p.m. last Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Galvez was nearing the end of his shift when the "brazen" shooting occurred, Lt. John Carina said. “It appears like he was targeted, it doesn’t look random," he added. Detectives have learned that 29-year-old Officer Ricardo Galvez was sitting in his personal vehicle in the SEE PG.5
