Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27) spoke and participated in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument One Year Anniversary Celebration last Friday. The event was organized by the National Forest Service, conservation groups, local stakeholders and partners. Attendees participated in tours that featured the history of the San Gabriel Mountains and rehabilitation projects involving a sign unveiling, painting, planting and cleanup. Rep. Chu, who has led the effort to protect the mountains through legislation and by calling on President Obama to take executive action, released the following statement: "Today is more than a celebration - it is a call to action. For so many years, conservation groups, environmentalists, mountain bikers, youth crews, business owners, hikers, fishers and families fought so hard to create this National Monument. That declaration, which occurred one
year ago, opened the door to millions of dollars in federal appropriations and private donations. We already see new trails, multilingual signs and crews that are making the area safer and cleaner. So now, with greater collaboration and public input than ever before, we must work together to keep these rivers, mountains and forests safe for generations to come. And that care was clearly on display today. "I particularly want to thank the U.S. Forest Service for making today's event possible. It was so wonderful to take part in the various rehabilitation efforts like painting, clean up and planting new vegetation. I am proud to finally have the National Monument designation our mountains deserve and even more proud to take part in today's celebration with so many dedicated lovers of the San Gabriel Mountains." The long battle to release the Office of Independent Review Group (“OIR”) Report on the Pasadena police shooting of the unarmed African-American youth Kendrec McDade will apparently come to a conclusion soon, as Tuesday’s deadline for the Pasadena Police Officers’ Association (“PPOA”) to file an appeal with the California Supreme Court passed without its appealing. The Court of Appeals issued an opinion on Sept. 10 ordering the trial court to release portions of the Re-
port in addition to the 80% ordered by the trial court; however, those additional portions and the Report with the 80% redactions are still under seal until the appeal process is finished. The additional portions appear to be critical of the police chief, the city manager and/or the city attorney but appear not to involve further revelations about the officers’ conduct. The PPOA had 40 days after the date of the Sept. 10 opinion to file a petition for review;

South Pasadena Diver Represents US at McDade Shooting Junior Pan-American Championship in Cuba Report Release ‘Appears to Be on the Horizon’ BY J. SHADÉ QUINTANILLA Elena Yeh has always gravitated towards water. When she was a toddler, she could often be found jumping into pools before she even learned how to swim. By the time she was a one-year-old, she started taking swimming lessons and learned how to float. Fast forward a few years, Yeh’s affinity for water has turned her into a national diving champion. Winning the gold medal in her category at the AT&T National Diving Championship in August, her successful dive earned her an invitation to the UANA Junior Pan Ameri-
can Diving Championships in Matanzas, Cuba earlier this month. The first international aquatics competition hosted by the country in 24 years, the Pan-American Championships was also the first international competition Yeh has ever attended. With over 100 competitors from ten different counties, Yeh represented the United States in the girls 11-andunder category. Her biggest win was when she placed fourth in the 3-meter contest, earning 220.05 points, SEE PG. 16
