Arcadia Council Appoints Segal to Wuo's Vacated Seat; Officials Reboot Zoning Update, Highlands Historical Architecture Survey BY JOE TAGLIERI

The Arcadia City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Mickey Segal to the seat vacated by John Wuo earlier this month. Wuo resigned "due to personal and health reasons" via a letter delivered to the council Oct. 6 after he was linked to companies and individuals selling an investment product that federal authorities allege is fraudulent. Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27) spoke and participated in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument One Year Anniversary Celebration last Friday. The event was organized by the National Forest Service, conservation groups, local stakeholders and partners. Attendees participated in tours that featured the history of the San Gabriel Mountains and rehabilitation projects involving a sign unveiling, painting, planting and cleanup. Rep. Chu, who has led the effort to protect the mountains through legislation and by calling on President Obama to take executive action, released the following statement: "Today is more than a celebration - it is a call to action. For so many years, conservation groups, environmentalists, mountain bikers, youth crews, business owners, hikers, fishers and families fought so hard to create this National Monument. That declaration, which occurred one

year ago, opened the door to millions of dollars in federal appropriations and private donations. We already see new trails, multilingual signs and crews that are making the area safer and cleaner. So now, with greater collaboration and public input than ever before, we must work together to keep these rivers, mountains and forests safe for generations to come. And that care was clearly on display today. "I particularly want to thank the U.S. Forest Service for making today's event possible. It was so wonderful to take part in the various rehabilitation efforts like painting, clean up and planting new vegetation. I am proud to finally have the National Monument designation our mountains deserve and even more proud to take part in today's celebration with so many dedicated lovers of the San Gabriel Mountains." City to Release First Round of Education Campaign on Arcadia Real Estate Rules BY JOE TAGLIERI A forthcoming issue of the city of Arcadia’s newsletter marks the first installment of a campaign to provide the public with information on the local zoning code and real estate development regulations. The city-sponsored publication covers the basics of Arcadia residential development policy and addresses frequently asked questions officials have received on the issue.

The information effort coincides with the restarting of a zoning code update study and historical preservation survey that were put on hold due to what a majority of council members claimed were concerns over a lawsuit filed by Highlands neighborhood residents against the city. The lawsuit, which sought to stall council-approved residential construction projects, was settled earlier this month

clearing a path to reopen the zoning update and historical survey. Officials said the public education campaign will also include public meetings in November as well as an advisory committee comprised of Arcadia residents representing the spectrum of positions on real estate development. A copy of the newsletter obtained by Arcadia Weekly can be viewed online.
