McBratneys Return to Monrovia BY SUSAN MOTANDER For decades the McBratney name was synonymous with quality. The family-owned department store on Myrtle Avenue carried the very best quality goods and it was a Monrovia institution. Unfortunately, the return of “McBratney’s” was only a visit by members of the family, not a return of that renowned store. The occasion was a visit by Sam McBratney, wellknown Irish author of more than 50 children’s books SEE PG. 16
The photo is of the McBratney store in the mid-1930s. The people are Sam’s wife Maralyn (in orange), Sam McBratney, John (holding the photo), Dr. Bryson McBratney, Jeff (light-colored shirt and jeans) and Mickey (white shirt - dark pants). The lady in orange is Cindy (Jeff’s wife), the woman in green, John’s wife Jean. - Photo by Kim

I served as the Pasadena City’s Development Administrator in the Housing and Development Department from 1982 – 2000. My job was to know where the City was headed and to make the engine perform to get it there. My primary role was to revitalize what was then a very dilapidated Downtown Pasadena, including Old Pasadena. In that role, I pioneered for Pasadena the economic development strategy of place-based economics instead of a projectby-project development approach. Based upon creating a valuable place, Downtown Pasadena has become a national and international model of how to revitalize a dying Main Street. It is

Green Infrastructure Teems at Station Square As Monrovia continues to make progress towards completion of the Station Square on-site infrastructure and park project adjacent to the Gold Line Station here in Monrovia, the city wanted to share that the project includes quite a variety of green infrastructure to promote environmental stewardship. In addition to traditional environmentally friendly project components, such as drought tolerant landscaping, utilization or recycled content and smart irrigation systems, the city also obtained a variety of grant
funds to install cutting edge green infrastructure technology within the Station Square project. An overview of some of that technology includes the following: - Permeable Pavers: Permeable pavers are one of the most environmentally friendly paving solutions that are available. In addition to being decorative and attractive, permeable pavers have proven benefits such as reduced installation costs, increased water quality, decreased storm water runoff and helps prevent soil erosion and flooding.

- Silva Cells: Silva Cells are a modular building block for containing healthy soil beneath paving to help grow trees and manage the rate, quality and volume of storm water runoff. Typically, urban tree growth is stunted by limited access to soil and poor soil quality. Buckling sidewalks from roots are also hazardous and a major cost to repair. Silva Cells overcome these challenges by providing unlimited soil volumes without compromising above ground surface area. Silva Cells also integrate trees SEE PG. 17
